
The 82nd Airborne Division started as the 82nd Infantry Division. It was formed in 1917 in Georgia, and deployed to France in 1918. Demobilized after World War I, it was reactivated in March 1942 in Louisiana. In August 1942 it was renamed the 82nd Airborne, the first airborne division in the US Army. Current home base is Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
