Bill’s Family: Ancestors of Paul Stupak

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Stupak

NOTE: Place names may be a bit confusing. All of these people are Ukrainian nationals, from the Galicia Province in what was at that time Austria-Hungary. After the First World War it became part of Poland, so many of the records may say Poland. After the Second World War it became part of Ukrainian SSR in the Soviet Union, and today is part of Ukraine.

16. Unknown Stupak, born probably about 1830 in Austria-Hungary. He married (unknown) probably about 1855 in Austria-Hungary.

We don’t know these ancestors at all, and our genealogy should properly start with Jakob Stupak. I have gone back to this level just to tie in and show the relationship to other known descendants.

They had two children that we know of, there were probably others:

16.1. Unknown Stupak (~1860- ), had descendants and is expanded below.

16.2. Jakob Stupak (8) (~1860 - ) and Anna ___ are direct ancestors, separate page.

16.1. Unknown Stupak, born probably around 1860 in Austria-Hungary. He married (unknown) probably about 1880 in Austria-Hungary. Again, nothing is actually known of this couple, and they are included here only to show the relation of their descendants to our line.

They had two children that we know of, there were probably others (first cousins to us):

16.1.1. Mykola Stupak {a,b,c,e,h,ca} was born 10 Sep 1882 in Austria-Hungary, and died 6 Dec 1958 in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin. He married in 1908 Austria-Hungary, Mary Macko (also seen as Mary Matko). Mary was born 11 Oct 1890 in Austria-Hungary, and died 3 Dec 1963 in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin. They were Catholic.

Mykola immigrated first to Canada, then came to the United States in 1913. He changed his name to Michael (Mike) upon arrival. On his immigration record, he gave his birthplace as Stanowa Nizhna, Austria. He came alone, got a job, and saved money to bring the rest of his family over. Mary came to the United States in May 1920 with their four daughters. She gave her birthplace as Miedzybrody, Poland (it was Poland at the time she immigrated -- when she was born, it would have been Austria-Hungary). They lived at 1944 Racine Street in Racine, Wisconsin -- we lived across the street from them for several years. They are both buried in Racine, Wisconsin.

Mykola and Mary had six children (second cousins to us):

16.1.1.1. Katherine Stupak (called Katie) {a,b,ca} was born 13 Jan 1909 in Austria-Hungary, and died 14 Jan 1996 in Racine. She married Charles W. Mickelson, also seen as Charles Michelson. Charles was born about 1903, and died 25 Feb 1969.

16.1.1.2. Mary S. Stupak {a,b,ca} was born 2 Jan 1910 in Austria-Hungary, and died 27 Apr 1994 in Long Beach (Los Angeles) California. She married first, Marcel Hroscikoski. Marcel was born 12 Jan 1903 in Wisconsin, and died 8 Nov 1962 in Los Angeles (Los Angeles) California. Mary married second in Los Angeles, Alex Makara. Alex was born 15 Aug 1901 in Pennsylvania, and died 15 Jun 1982 in Riverside (Riverside) California.

16.1.1.3. Anna A. Stupak {a,b,f,ca} was born 8 Jul 1911 in Austria-Hungary, and died 17 Feb 1998 in Kenosha (Kenosha) Wisconsin. She married Elgar F. Johnson. Elgar was born 29 Jun 1914 in Wisconsin, and died 11 Mar 2004 in Kenosha (Kenosha) Wisconsin. Anna and Elgar had three children (Patrick, Sandra (White), and Judith (Matrise)).

16.1.1.4. Rose Stupak {a,b,ca} was born 5 Feb 1913 in Austria-Hungary, and died 29 Dec 1999 in Mesa (Maricopa) Arizona. She married Charles Simmons. Charles was born 11 Jun 1910 in Panevezys, Lithuania, and died 20 Jul 1963 in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin.

16.1.1.5. Sophie S. Stupak {a,b,c,g,ca} was born 12 Jul 1921 in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin, and died 24 Sep 2001 in Racine. She married 10 Nov 1950 in Racine, Raymond T. Cook, son of John Cook and Anna ___. Raymond was born 12 Dec 1915 in Wisconsin, and died 5 Apr 2006 in Kenosha (Kenosha) Wisconsin. Sophie was a Registered Nurse. Raymond served in the US Army in World War II; he was a bricklayer and a real estate agent. Sophie and Ray had four children (Bruce, Bradley, Camille and Michelle).

16.1.1.6. Julia Ann Stupak {a,b,h,ca} was born 24 Oct 1922 in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin, and died 26 Nov 2001 in Kenosha (Kenosha) Wisconsin. She married in 1943, Jack Albert Finch. Jack was born 12 Jul 1921. They moved to Kenosha in 1950. Julia was a teacher. Julia and Jack had four daughters (Candace, m Don Fessenden; Janice, m Alex Dimitrijevic; Mary, m Larry Mason; and Christy m Doug Revsbeck).

16.1.2. Unknown Stupak {a,b,d}. Another blank spot. We know Mykola must have had a brother, as his obituary lists the below children as nephew and niece. I knew Andrew, but don’t recall ever meeting Nancy. This person would have been born in Austria-Hungary probably in the 1880s. He and his wife (also unknown) had at least two children (second cousins to us):

16.1.2.1. Andrew Stupak {a,b,d} was born in 1922 in Poland, and died in 1985, probably in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin. Andrew came to the United States in 1951. He gave his birthplace as Stynawa Nyzhna, Poland. Andrew married probably in the 1960s in Waukegan (Lake) Illinois, Irene Peron. Irene was born 25 Apr 1912 in Poland, and died 17 Jun 1991 in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin. This was her third marriage; she had previously married ___ Serembiczky, and second Marion Zbirko.

16.1.2.2. Nancy Stupak {a,b,d} was born probably in the 1920s in Poland. She is listed as a niece in Michael’s obituary, and as a sister of Andrew in immigration records. She married Michael Fedoriw.
