Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer |
||
| These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further. | HOME | |

This ancestor is questionable; it may end up that [2816] George is the end of our Kilbourne line.

NOTABLES:
5632.2.1.1. Jonathan Law was Governor of Connecticut Colony, and married into Bill’s family |
5632. Thomas Kilbourne {a,b,c,d,e,f} was born about 1578 (baptized 8 May 1578) in Wood Ditton (Cambridge)
England, and died sometime before 1640 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut.
He is a son of John Kilbourne [11264].
Thomas married 5 Sep 1604 in Moulton (Suffolk) England,
5633. Frances Moody {b,c,f}. Frances was born 11 Oct 1584 in Moulton (Suffolk) England, and
died Nov 1650 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut.
She is a daughter of George Moody [11266] and Margaret ___ [11267].
I am including Thomas and Frances in our line since many researchers, including Savage {b}, place George as a son of Thomas. There is not complete agreement on this, however; Jacobus {c} questions whether George was really a son of Thomas, based on the fact that he is not included in Thomas’ will. Rosine Spencer’s notes state that the family was descended from Thomas; although she did not have any of the many generations between Thomas and [22] Henry Kilburn, and may have just seen this name in one of the referenced books. If it turns out that George is not a son of Thomas, then our genealogy starts with [2816] George Kilbourne.
|
| The church in Wood Ditton |
Thomas and Frances belonged to the Church of England (i.e. Anglican); Thomas had been a warden of St. Mary’s church
in Wood Ditton. Thomas and Frances, along with several of their children, came to America in 1635. They
sailed on the “Increase” in Apr 1635. Some say they landed directly in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut; others say
they landed first at Boston, Massachusetts, then moved to Connecticut because of religious
disagreement with the Congregational colonists in Massachusetts.
Thomas died sometime before 1640; some speculate that Thomas may have died 23 Apr 1637
in Wethersfield, killed by the Pequot in the incident that started the Pequot War. The Pequot had kidnapped a few English girls, then
killed most of the members of a rescue party. I have seen no concrete evidence, but as this happened very close to the Kilbourne
home, it is possible that Thomas was one of the rescue party.
The will of “Francis Kilbourne” of Wethersfield, dated 13 Nov 1650, gave a gown to her daughter “Margit wife of
Richard Lawe” and five shillings to her grandson, Jonathan Lawe; 5 lbs to Richard Law in lieu of the forty shillings she had borrowed of him;
to daughter “Lidia wife of Rober Howar”, 5 lbs; to daughter “Meary wife of John Root”, 5 lbs; to daughter “Frances wife of Thomas Uffoote”, 10
lbs; to grandchild, “Elizabeth Geneson”, a gown, petticoat and hat; balance of her apparel to be divided between Lidia, Mary and Frances;
to son John, three shirts and the rest of the linen to the three daughters. Witnesses: Samuel Smith and Elizabeth his wife and
Nathaniel Dickinson. The inventory was taken 3 Dec 1650 by Samuel Smith, Thomas Coleman and Nathaniel Dickinson and
amounted to 349.08.04 lbs (worth about $30,000 today).
Thomas and Frances had ten children:
5632.1. Anne Kilbourne {c} was born about 1605 in Wood Ditton (Cambridge) England (or posibly at Moulton), and died Aug 1607 in Wood Ditton, age 2.
5632.2. Margaret Kilbourne (1607 Eng -1689 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.
5632.3. Thomas Kilbourne {b,c} was born in 1609 in Wood Ditton (Cambridge) England (baptized 30 Nov 1609), and died in England. He married Elizabeth ___ in England. Thomas went to Connecticut in 1634 before the rest of the family to make arrangements for their move. As nothing more is seen of him, it is thought that he returned to England. Jacobus believed that this Thomas stayed in England, and that the Thomas Kilbourn who came to America in 1634 was not related.
5632.4. George Kilbourne [2816] {b} (1612 Eng - 1685 MA) and Elizabeth Barker are direct ancestors, separate page. Jacobus {c} says this George died without issue, and is not the same as our ancestor George.
5632.5. Elizabeth Kilbourne (1614 Eng - 1638 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.
5632.6. Lydia Kilbourne (1616 Eng - >1684 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.
5632.7. Mary Kilbourne (1619 Eng -1684 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.
5632.8. Frances Kilbourne (1621 Eng - 1682 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.
5632.9. John Kilbourne (1624 Eng - 1703 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.
5632.10. Joseph Kilbourne was born about 1625 in Wood Ditton (Cambridge) England. He is not mentioned by Savage {b} or Jacobus {c}, and may not belong here, or may have died young in England.
5632.2. Margaret Kilbourne {b,c} was born Sep 1607 in Wood Ditton (Cambridge)
England, and died 10 Jan 1688/89 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut. She married in 1635, Richard Law (seen also as Lawe
or Leaw). They came to Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut the same year, and moved to Stamford in 1640. Richard was
“King’s Attorney” (probably like our district attorney?). He served as town clerk
1641-1664, was a judge 1653-1663, and deputy to the colonial legislature 1653-1665. One of their grandsons becomes Governor of Connecticut.

9 Jan 1711/12 in Milford (New Haven) Connecticut. He married 1 Jun 1664 in Milford,
Sarah Clark, daughter of George Clark (~1620 Eng - 1690 CT) and Sarah ___ (~1620 Eng - 1689 CT). Sarah was born Apr 1644 in
England, and died 15 Feb 1705/06 in Milford (New Haven) Connecticut. Sarah’s niece Deborah marries into Bill’s side of
the family (Beahm 7708.9.1 Samuel Prince).

Watertown. Elizabeth is not mentioned in the main published sources other than her birth, so she probably came to America later
with her husband. Savage {b} says she stayed in England. The only subsequent reference is that both
Thomas and Frances name her daughter in their wills. The below information is entirely from secondary website sources, and is
accordingly less reliable.

John 1736-1819). John married third, 5 Mar 1767 in Glastonbury (Hartford) Connecticut,
Hannah Fox, daughter of Ebenezer Fox and Elizabeth Arnold.
John was a local hero in the French and Indian War. He was the first American to settle in Walpole, New Hampshire, building a log
cabin in 1749, three years before the town was chartered. At the time the French and Indian War started (about 1754) it had grown to
several dozen homesteads and a small fort. There were several attacks in the area, mostly by Indians coming down from Canada.
On Aug 17, 1755, John was returning home at noon with his 18-year-old son John, a man named Peak, and Peak’s son, when they saw a
large number of Indians in the woods. They ran for John’s cabin, where they were joined by Mehitabel and their daughter Hetty. The
attackers were the St. Francis Indians from Canada, led by one known to the settlers as Philip. They were numbered at least 197 by actual
count, and estimated at 400 altogether. Some of them first tried to attack another party of settlers led by Col. Bellows, the local
commander. When that failed, they turned to Kilburn’s cabin. While the two women reloaded muskets, the four men fought
off the attack for six hours. John recognized and killed their leader with his first shot. Sometime during the afternoon the man
Peak was mortally wounded, and died several days later. The attack broke off at sunset, and the St. Francis returned to
Canada. There was another attack in 1757 on a town in the area, but no more at Walpole. Although the other group under Col.
Bellows certainly had something to do with it, John Kilburn is generally given the credit for saving the town.
