Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Thomas Vail and Sarah Wentworth

NOTABLES:

2976.1 Samuel Vail served in King Philip’s War
2976.1.8 Thomas Vail married into Bill’s side of the family

2976. Thomas Vail {a,wa,wb} was born about 1628 in Southwold (Suffolk) England, and died in 1687 in Westchester Co, New York. He is said to be a son of John Veale [5952] and Alice Moore [5953]. Various dates have been given for his birth, from 1620 to 1630. Thomas is supposed to have married about 1650 in England (but see notes below),

2977. Sarah Wentworth {wa}. Sarah was born about 1630 in England. Various dates have been given for her birth, from 1620 to 1635.

Thomas and Sarah are the first known members of the family in America. They are said to have arrived together in Salem, Massachusetts in 1640, although this conflicts with their supposed marriage in England in 1650. The 1640 arrival also creates a problem with their ages as given, as they would only be 10 years old at the time. Their complete omission by the normally thorough Savage is also cause to wonder if the dates or places are incorrect. Thomas is mentioned as a resident of Southampton on Long Island in 1647. Jeremiah Vail, often seen associated as the brother of Thomas, arrived in Massachusetts in 1639 and follows this same Salem to Long Island path. Perhaps Thomas was sent in 1640 to live with his older brother? If he arrived as a child, and left for New York before age 20, that might account for his absence in Savage. Source {wa} lists several land sales, tax assessments and other miscellaneous evidences of Thomas’ presence in Long Island. I would guess that Sarah probably came separately with her parents, and Thomas and Sarah were more likely married in New York. They moved to Westchester County in 1660.

{There are many web sites having this family, all with about the same information, all of which seems to derive from a few articles by William Vail in the early 1900s. As far as I have been able to tell from my exhaustive survey (i.e., I looked around until I got tired of it), very little has been done on this family since then, and nothing of substance has been added to the original work. Don’t expect anything new from me either -- this page is just a compilation of other older sources.}

Thomas and Sarah had eight children:

2976.1. Samuel Vail (1654 NY - 1695 NY) had descendants and is expanded below.

2976.2. Thomas Vail (1656 NY) had descendants and is expanded below.

He married in 1677 in Southampton, Elizabeth Hunt, daughter of Edward Hunt and Elizabeth Hazzard. Elizabeth was born in 1657 in Woodbridge (Middlesex) New Jersey, and died 3 Nov 1747 in Woodbridge. After Samuel died, Elizabeth moved back to Woodbridge. She married second Thomas Gach, and had two children (Mary, Thomas). Elizabeth married third, 1709, John Griffith.
Samuel and Elizabeth had perhaps eight children (first cousins to us):

2976.1.1. Samuel Vail {b,wa,wk} was born 21 Dec 1678 in Westchester County, New York, and died 26 Jun 1733 in Woodbridge (Middlesex) New Jersey. Some have 4 Dec for his birth; perhaps 21 Dec would be the baptism? And some have 21 Oct, which is a mistaken interpretation of the old style 10th month. Samuel married first in 1707, Abigail Hadden. Abigail was born 14 Oct 1685 and died 14 Oct 1724 in Westchester County, New York. They owned several slaves, although they were Quakers.
Samuel and Abigail had eight children (second cousins to us):

He married first, 16 Dec 1731 in Woodbridge (Middlesex) New Jersey, Margaret Laing, daughter of John Laing and Elizabeth Shotwell. Margaret was born 9 Dec 1710 in Piscataway (Middlesex) New Jersey, and died sometime before 1751. John and Margaret had seven children (Samuel 1732-1753; John 1734-1814, m Catherine FitzRandolph; Daniel 1736-1823, m1 Mary Tue, m2 Mary McEowen; Isaac 1737-1770, m Rachel Compton; David 1740-1823, m Phebe Jackson; Abraham 1744-1824, m Margaret FitzRandolph; and Benjamin 1745-1820, m Margaret Clarkson).

2976.1.1.2. Stephen Vail {wa,wk} was born 10 Apr 1710 in Westchester County, New York, and died 17 Oct 1777 in Green Brook (Somerset) New Jersey. He married about Jan 1732/33 in Plainfield (Union) New Jersey, Esther Smith, daughter of Benjamin Smith and Sarah Shotwell. Esther was born 4 Jan 1712/13 in Woodbridge (Middlesex) New Jersey, and died in 1777 in Woodbridge. More details and further generations are given in {wk}.

2976.1.1.3. Samuel Vail {wa} was born 15 Apr 1711 in Westchester County, New York. He is not mentioned in his father’s will, so may have died before 1733.

2976.1.1.10. Sarah Vail {wa,wc} was born 3 Dec 1728 in Westchester County, New York, and died in 1756. She married Theophilus Hunt. Theophilus was born about 1723 and died 10 Jun 1797. Sarah and Theophilus had at least one child (Theophilus 1746-1820, m Millicent Lockwood).

2976.1.1.11. Elizabeth Vail {d,wa} was born 17 Dec 1731 in Westchester County, New York. She married 10 Mar 1758, Solomon Fields, son of Joseph Fields. They were Quakers.

2976.1.2. Martha Vail {b,c,wa} was born 27 Jan 1681 in Westchester County, New York, and died sometime before 17 Dec 1742. Some have her birth date as 27 Nov 1681, probably a mistaken translation of 27/11/1681. She married first, ___ Oakley. We don't know of any children from this marriage. Martha married second, in 1733, Edward Burling, son of Edward Burling and Grace Norrington. Edward was born 4 Nov 1674 in Barking (Suffolk) England, and died 26 May 1749 in New York. John and Martha had twelve children (second cousins to us):

2976.1.3.1. John Vail {a,e,wa} was born 14 Aug 1713 in Morristown (Morris) New Jersey, and died 17 Nov 1774 in Woodbridge (Middlesex) New Jersey. Some have his birth as 25 Aug 1713; that may be a baptism date. Some have his birth as 14 Jun, which is a mistaken interpretation of 6th month. He married Ellen Billings.

2976.1.3.2. Samuel Vail {a,e,wa} was born 16 Feb 1714/15 in Morristown (Morris) New Jersey, and died 27 Nov 1715, age 9 months. Some have his birth as 16 Dec 1714, a mistaken interpretation of 12th month.

Grace was born about 1721, and died in Apr 1777. Vail {a} says they settled in Ohio, others {wa} have his death in North Carolina. Joseph and Grace had eight children (Solomon; Peter; Jonathan; Grace; Hannah, m Henry Johnson; Elizabeth, m William Davis; Joseph; John 1741-1818, m1 Sarah Vance, m2 Amy Copus).

She married 27 Sep 1736 in Piscataway (Middlesex) New Jersey, Edward Drake, son of Andrew Drake and Hannah FitzRandolph. Edward was born 6 Jan 1712/13 in Piscataway (Middlesex) New Jersey. Mary and Edward had six children (Catherine; Sarah; Joseph; Andrew; Mary; Jeremiah 1738, m Elizabeth Wooden), of whom we list one:

2976.1.3.4.5. Mary Drake {wa} was born probably around 1738. She married about Mar 1758, her cousin Thomas Vail [2976.1.1.2.3], son of Stephen Vail and Esther Smith. Thomas and Mary are second cousins, both descending from Samuel Vail and Elizabeth Hunt. They had five children, listed under Thomas.

2976.1.3.5. Thomas Vail {a,wa,we} was born 29 Aug 1720 in Woodbridge (Middlesex) New Jersey, and died 26 May 1807 in Hanover (Morris) New Jersey. Some have his birth as 9 Sep 1720, that is probably the baptism date. Some have his birth as 29 Jun, a mistaken interpretation of 6th month. He married sometime before 21 Apr 1744, Sarah Davis, daughter of Nicholas Davis and Mary Somers. Sarah was born about 1721 in Morristown (Morris) New Jersey, and died 4 Feb 1801. 2976.1.3.7. Nathaniel Vail {a,e,wa} was born 22 Nov 1724 in New Jersey and died in 1783 in St. John (St. John, New Brunswick) Canada. Some have his birth as 3 Dec 1724; that may be a baptism date. Some have his birth as 22 Sep, a mistaken interpretation of month 9. He married 3 May 1748, Elizabeth Dennis. Elizabeth was born about 1731 and died in 1815 in Gagetown (Queens, New Brunswick) Canada. They were Loyalists, and moved to Canada after the Revolution. Nathaniel and Elizabeth had eleven children (Hannah, m Abraham Lee; Lewis; Nathaniel, m Sarah Birdsell; Mary 1749, m Minard LeFevre; Elizabeth 1752, m1 Joseph Dalrimple, m2 Jessie Smith; Martha 1754-1829, m Dennis Combs; Sarah 1756, m Adam Burwell; Catherine 1758-1822, m Thomas Cory; Asher 1759, m Lydia Scribner; Robert 1761-1817, m Mary Cogill; Reuben 1772-1824, m Sarah Scribner).

2976.1.3.8. Isaac Vail {a,e,wa,wj,wk} was born 31 Jan 1727/28 in New Jersey, and died in 1805 in Charles Town (Jefferson) Virginia (now West Virginia). Some have his birth as Nov 1727, a mistaken interpretation of month 11; I have also seen on various websites 11 Feb 1727 and 30 Sep 1727 for his birth. He married first, Elizabeth Jennings. Elizabeth was born probably about 1730. Some have her death in 1805, although this conflicts with possibly two additional marriages for Isaac. Her brother Isaac marries Isaac’s sister Sarah Vail, below. Isaac and Elizabeth had eight children (David, m Jane Cox; Rebecca; Susannah, m Cornelius Vanarsdale; Agnes, m William Morgan; Mary, m ___ Hamman; Martha; Catharine, m William Caldwell; Samuel, m Mary ___). Most have a second marriage; some to unknown, some to Winefred Crabb, and some to Rachel Compton. Some have Isaac married third, 8 Feb 1762, Rachel Compton, but I think this was more likely his cousin 2976.1.1.1.4 Isaac Vail, above {wk}. There are family stories that Isaac was a Quaker preacher, forced to leave the ministry and the state due to his marriage to a non-Quaker. This is assigned in various sites to the Isaac who married Elizabeth Jennings, or to the Isaac who married Rachel Compton (although that Isaac is often said to have died in 1770 in New Jersey).

2976.1.3.9. Martha Vail {a,e,wa,wf} was born 28 Jan 1728/29 in Morristown (Morris) New Jersey, and died 15 Jun 1762. Some have her birth date as 8 Feb, this is probably the baptism date. Some have 28 Nov for her birth, a mistaken interpretation of month 11. She married 25 Feb 1747/48, Abraham Marlet, son of Thomas Marlet and Neeltje ___. Abraham (also seen as Abraham Merlat, Abraham Marlot, Abraham Mollet) was born 17 Mar 1723 in Raritan (Somerset) New Jersey.

2976.1.3.10. Sarah Vail {a,e,wa} was born 12 Dec 1730 in Woodbridge (Middlesex) New Jersey. Some have her birth as 23 Dec 1730; this is probably the baptism date. Some have her birth as 12 Oct, a mistaken interpretaion of month 10. Her death date is given in most sources as 1752, probably all derived from {a}; this has probably been confused with the marriage date, since she is also shown as having several children, as late as 1758. Sarah married in 1752 Isaac Jennings, and moved to Ohio. Isaac is a brother of Elizabeth Jennings, who marries Sarah’s brother Isaac, above. Sarah and Isaac had five children (Peter, Agnes, Grace, Sarah, and Deziah), of whom we list one (third cousin to us):

2976.1.3.10.5. Deziah Jennings {wa} was born 14 Jun 1758 in New Jersey, and died 20 Jul 1828 in Butler County Ohio. 2976.1.3.12. Noah Vail {wa} was born in 1734 in Morristown (Morris) New Jersey, and died 13 Apr 1801.

2976.1.4. Daniel Vail {b,wa} was born around 1687, and died probably in Connecticut. He married 10 Oct 1717, Hannah Griffing (also seen as Hannah Griffin). Daniel and Hannah had fifteen children, but only five survived to adulthood.

2976.1.5. Sarah Vail {wa,wg} was born around 1687 in Westchester County, New York (some have New Jersey), and died 16 May 1730 in Middlesex County, New Jersey. She married 5 Oct 1707, Edward Crowell, son of Edward Crowell and Mary Lathrop. Edward was born 6 Jun 1685 in Barnstable (Barnstable) Massachusetts (some have Middlesex County New Jersey), and died 20 Oct 1756 in Woodbridge (Middlesex) New Jersey.

2976.1.5.5. Sarah Crowell {wh} was born 17 Oct 1717.

2976.1.5.6. Edward Crowell {wh} was born probably sometime around 1720.

After Aaron died, Martha married Joseph Irish.
