Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer |
||
| These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further. | HOME | |

2846.2.4.6. James Stickney served in the militia in the French and Indian War |
2846. James Chute {a,b,wa} was born about 1649 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1730 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He is a son of James Chute [5692] and Elizabeth Epps [5693]. James married on 10 Nov 1673 in Ipswich,
2846. Mary Wood {a,b,wa}. Mary was born 15 Mar 1654/55 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died probably sometime between 1710 and 1715. She is supposed to be a daughter of Thomas Wood [5694] and Ann Hunt [5695]. There is not complete agreement on this; Savage has her as “possibly” a daughter of Isaiah Wood; and Chute {b} has her as a daughter of William Wood and Mary ___.
James and Mary had eight children:
2846.1. Mary Chute [1423] (1674 MA - 1750 MA) and John Cheney are direct ancestors, separate page. Savage has Mary as child number six, born 12 Sep 1697.
2846.2. Elizabeth Chute (1676-1761) had descendants and is expanded below.
2846.3. Ann Chute (1679) had descendants and is expanded below.

Andrew had a previous marriage to Rebecca Somerby; she had died from the birth of their only child (Rebecca Stickney). The daughter also died less than a year after her birth. After Andrew died, Elizabeth married 28 Mar 1724 Henry Lunt.
Elizabeth and Andrew had eleven children (first cousins to us):

2846.2.4. Andrew Stickney {b,c,wa} was born 9 Feb 1701/02 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in Nov 1743. He is supposed to have married first, in 1723, Sarah Brocklebank {b,wa}. Cutter {c} says that they published their intent 3 Sep 1721 but never married. Sarah was born
probably sometime around 1705. I believe she is probably our cousin Sarah Brocklebank [1420.1.1], daughter of Samuel Brocklebank and Sarah Plummer, but have not been able to find any evidence.

I am listing the children as given in {wa}, but I don’t like the fit -- the only dates we have for most of them are their marriage dates, and according to those James would be about 50 to 60 years old when most of the children are born -- possible, but unusual. I suspect there is a confusion of two different families.

William married third, 12 Jun 1816 in Newbury, Hannah Pillsbury.
2846.3.5. Daniel Brown {b} was born about 1725.
2846.3.6. Ruth Brown {b} was born about 1728.
2846.4. Lionel Chute {a,b,wa} was born about Apr 1681 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1730. Savage has Lionel baptized 3 Apr 1681, while Chute has his birth date as 15 Apr 1681. Lionel married 10 Dec 1702 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts,
Hannah Cheney [2844.11], daughter of Peter Cheney and Hannah Noyes. Hannah was born 12 Sep 1683 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Lionel joined the Rowley Church on 19 Dec 1703. His death date is unknown; the last recorded evidence is a land sale on 30 Apr 1730. The last evidence of Hannah is Elizabeth’s birth in 1726; she does not appear on Lionel’s last land transaction, so probably died between 1726 and 1730.
Lionel and Hannah had nine children (first cousins to us):
2846.4.1. Jemima Chute {b,h,wa,wb} was born 19 Dec 1703 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before Apr 1743. Jemima and Daniel had eight children (both second and third cousin to us):

2846.4.1.3. Jemima Jewett {h,wa,wb} was born 2 Nov 1730 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1768 in Hopkinton (Merrimack) New Hampshire. She married 23 Aug 1750 in Rowley, Josiah Smith (some have Joseph Smith). Josiah was born 8 Nov 1730 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Jemima and Josiah had at least one child (Jemima 1767, m Robert Knowlton).
2846.4.1.4. Lydia Jewett {h} was born 23 Feb 1732 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married Josiah Boynton.
2846.4.1.5. Elizabeth Jewett {h,wb}, called Betty Jewett, was born 29 Apr 1733 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 30 Apr 1752, her cousin Oliver Tenney [2838.10.9.2, son of Mehitabel Pearson and William Tenney. Elizabeth and Oliver are second cousins once removed, both descending from 2838 John Pearson and Dorcas Pickard.
2846.4.1.6. Sarah Jewett {d,h,wb} was born 18 Jul 1736 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 5 Aug 1756, Moses Thurlow, son of George Thurlow and Elizabeth Hale. Moses was born 12 Jul 1735, and died in Plymouth (Grafton) New Hampshire. They lived in Rowley, Fitchburg MA and Plymouth NH. Sarah and Moses had five children (Elizabeth 1757, m1 Ebenezer Clough, m2 Jonathan Burbank; Sarah 1759; Moses 1763-1768; Polly 1765, m Isaac Ward; and another Moses 1769-1788).
2846.4.1.7. Samuel Jewett {h,wb} was born 10 Feb 1738/39 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
2846.4.1.8. Amos Jewett {h,wb} was born 13 Dec 1741 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
He married 28 Jan 1765, his cousin Ann Noyes [2846.2.8.3], daughter of Nehemiah Noyes and Ann Stickney. Ann was born 23 Jul 1738 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Amos and Ann are second cousins. They moved to New Hampshire.
Amos served in the Revolutionary War, first as a Minuteman and later in several regular Army units. Amos and Ann had four children (unnamed infant 1767-1767; Samuel 1768; Mary 1770; Sally 1776).
2846.4.2. Mary Chute {b,wa,wb} was born in 1706 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 30 Sep 1726 (intent published 24 Sep 1726), Jonathan Cory (also seen as Jonathan Core), son of Thomas Cory (1668-1738) and Hannah Page (1678-1746). Jonathan was born about 1711 in Weston (Middlesex) Massachusetts, baptized 29 Dec 1723 in Watertown (Middlesex) Massachusetts. He is presumed to have died before 1739, since he is not mentioned in his father’s will.
2846.4.3. Lydia Chute {b,wa} was born about 1709 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Chute {b} has her baptized 29 Jan 7109/10, while source {wa} has her born 29 Jan 1708/09; it seems there has been some obvious confusion due to transcribing of the 2-year date, as well as some confusion over birth vs. baptism.
2846.4.4. Sarah Chute {b,wa,anc} was born about Jun 1714 (baptized 27 Jun 1714) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1813 in Sutton (Merrimack) New Hampshire. She married in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, Benjamin Philbrick, son of James Philbrick (1677-1708) and Sarah Silver (1682-1770). Chute {b} has the marriage date as 1736, while sources {wa,anc} have 15 Oct 1730. Benjamin was born 31 Aug 1706 in Hampton (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died about 1800 in Sutton (Merrimack) New Hampshire.
Sarah and Benjamin had twelve children (second cousins to us):
2846.4.4.1. Hannah Philbrick {wa,anc} was born 8 Jun 1731 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts.
2846.4.4.2. Sarah Philbrick {wa,anc} was born 21 Mar 1732/33 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 12 Mar 1756.

2846.4.4.4. Jemima Philbrick {b,wa,wb,anc} was born 20 Oct 1737 in Hampstead (Rockingham) New Hampshire. Sources {wa,anc} have 29 Oct for the birth; perhaps that is the baptism date? She married 13 Nov 1759, Jeremiah Kent. Jeremiah was born 27 Feb 1741 in Gloucester (Essex) Massachusetts. They had two children (Mary 1760; and John 1762).
2846.4.4.5. James Philbrick {b,wa,wj,anc} was born 29 Nov 1739 in Hampstead (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died about 1805 in Reading (Windsor) Vermont. He married first, 30 Nov 1762 in Rindge (Cheshire) New Hampshire, Eunice Hale. Eunice was born in Jul 1739, and is supposed to have died 4 May 1776 in Rindge (Cheshire) New Hampshire -- but that date conflicts with what most sources have for James’ second marriage. James and Eunice had eight children (Elizabeth 1763; James 1764-1857, m Ruth Sherburn; Eunice 1766-1767; Sarah 1767, m Reuben Safford; Enoch 1769, m Sarah Sheldon; another Eunice 1771, m Francis Emory; Walter 1773-1846, m1 Thankful Irish, m2 Deborah Sheldon; Lucretia 1775, m Abel Perkins). James married second, Elizabeth Cutter [the web source {wj} which gives the first marriage, has 14 Nov 1776 for this second marriage; most other sources have this marriage as 14 Mar 1776 in Rindge (Cheshire) New Hampshire, which conflicts with the first]. Elizabeth was born (some have 28 Dec 1738, some 28 Dec 1753, and others have 24 May 1741 -- probably several Elizabeth Cutters being confused) in Lexington (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Jun 1838 in Reading (Windsor) Vermont. James served in the French and Indian War, and in the Revolutionary War. James and Elizabeth had twelve children (unnamed son 1777-1777; Molly or Polly 1778-1849, m Corin Ladd; unnamed daughter 1779-1779; Jonathan 1780-1858, m Ruth; Hepsibeth 1782-1870, m Benjamin Barnard; Elizabeth 1784-1786; Joseph 1786-1856, m Jemima Fay; Rachel 1788-1805, m the same Benjamin Barnard as Hepsibeth; Azubah 1790-1790; Sene 1791; Benjamin 1792; and Rebecca 1794-1885, m Edmund Davis).
2846.4.4.6. Abigail Philbrick {b,wa,wj,anc} was born 26 Feb 1741/42 in Hampstead (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died about 1826. She married 24 Jan 1774, Thomas Walker. Abigail and Thomas had four children (Margaret, George, Charlotte, John).
2846.4.4.7. Betty Philbrick (probably Elizabeth Philbrick?; also seen as Betsey Philbrick) {b,wj,anc} was born in 1744 (some have 26 Mar, some have 26 Apr; the later date could be baptism?) in Hampstead (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died in 1821. She married 11 Jun 1767 in Hampstead, Micah Chaplain. Micah was born 3 Oct 1745 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Bety and Micah had at least one child (Betsey, m Bulkley Hunt).
2846.4.4.8. Benjamin Philbrick {b,j,wa,wi,wj,anc} was born 10 Jun 1746 in Hampstead (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died in 1845 in Hopkinton (Merrimack) New Hampshire. He married first, 16 Apr 1767 in Plaistow (Rockingham) New Hampshire, Anna Knight, daughter of Joshua Knight and Mehitabel Harriman. Anna was born 18 Dec 1745 in Plaistow (Rockingham) New Hampshire. Benjamin and Anna had eight children (John 1769, m Dorothy Colburn; Anna 1770; Joshua 1771, m Hepsibah Russell; Lucy 1772; Lydia 1777; another Lydia 1778; Knight 1780, m Sally; Chute 1782). Benjamin married second, Lucy Buell BEAHM 7824.6.11.9], daughter of Joseph Buell and Anna Colton. She is a cousin to Bill’s side of the family. Lucy was born 8 Apr 1753 in Somers (Tolland) Connecticut, and moved to Newport New Hampshire with her parents. The only date I have seen for this marriage is 1775, which conflicts with the first marriage. Either this date is in error; or some of the children should be assigned to the second marriage; or we have another case of two families confused into one.
2846.4.4.9. Joseph Philbrick {b,wa,anc} was born 27 Aug 1748 in Hampstead (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died about 1831. He married 19 Mar 1765, Ruth Hovey.

2846.4.4.11. Mehitabel Philbrick {b,wa,anc} was born 24 Aug 1752 in Hampstead (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died 27 Oct 1812. She married Phineas Stevens.
2846.4.4.12. Sarah Philbrick {b,wa,anc} was born 10 Mar 1757 in Hampstead (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died 20 Dec 1843. She married 16 Apr 1781, Joseph Johnson.

Judith was born in 1726 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in Nov 1808 in Canada. They were living in Hampstead in 1756, where John was a surveyor of highways. They moved to Granville (Annapolis, Nova Scotia) Canada in 1759. This area had recently become available following the French and Indian War, and many New England colonists moved there. They lived first in Granville, then moved in 1799 to Digby-Joggins. Although they were Canadian, they seem to have sympathized with the American Revolution, since they named their fourth child George Washington Chute in 1778. Samuel is sometimes seen titled as Colonel, so may have served in the Revolutionary War, though I have not seen anything that states this explicitly. Lucy and Samuel had three children (Enoch 1775-1856, m1 Judith Chandler, m2 Martha Foster; Joseph 1777-1839, m Sarah Chandler; Stephen 1789-1811).

She was a midwife. James was a deacon for much of his life; he received a land grant in York County, Maine, in 1735, for military service -- we do not have any information on the dates of service, or the circumstances. Mary died of a “fever and a bloody purging”. James married second, 30 Mar 1761, Sarah Hale, daughter of Thomas Hale and Sarah Northend, and widow of Joseph Pearson [2838.2.3]. 2846.5.3.7. Daniel Chute {b,k} was born 25 Jul 1754, and died 12 Aug 1760. Adams calls him David Chute, which is clearly in error as his brother was still living when he was born.

William (also seen as William Hines) was born in 1692 in Marblehead (Essex) Massachusetts.
Ruth and William had six, perhaps seven children (first cousins to us):
(?) John Hine {wp} may be a son. He was born 24 May 1720 in Marblehead (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1770. This assignment was found in one web source only, which lists none of the other children, so his inclusion in this family may be suspect. John married 19 Nov 1744 in Marblehead, Mary Riddan, daughter of John Riddan and Sarah Bowden. Mary was born 22 Mar 1725/26 in Lynn (Essex) Massachusetts.

We have this family listed here based on our ancestor Mary Chute (2846.1 below) who marries John Cheney. But, there is a possible conflict with dates: she married in 1694, but Savage has her born in 1697. We are assuming Savage has an error in dates; but if he is correct, we may have identified the wrong Mary, in which case this family does not belong in our tree.
