Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

2844. Peter Cheney {a,b,e,wa,wb} was born about 1639 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died Jan 1694/95 in Newbury. He is a son of John Cheney [5688] and Martha Parrat [5689]. Peter married on 14 May 1663,

2845. Hannah Noyes {a,b,e,wa,wb}. Hannah, also seen as Johannah Noyes, was born 30 Oct 1643 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Jan 1704/05 in Newbury. She is a daughter of Nicholas Noyes [5690] and Mary Cutting [5691]. Peter bought a mill in Newbury in 1663, ran it for several years and trained his sons in the business. In 1670 the town granted him land to build a windmill for grain. He built a water-driven sawmill with his sons around 1690. The last record known of him is 10 Jan 1694/95, when he deeded the sawmill to a son. After Peter died, Hannah married 3 Jun 1700, John Atkinson.

Peter and Hannah had thirteen children:

2844.1. Peter Cheney (1663 MA - 1718) had descendants and is expanded below.

2844.2. John Cheney [1422] (1666 MA - 1750 MA) and Mary Chute are direct ancestors, separate page.

2844.3. Nicholas Cheney {a,b,e,wa,wc} was born 23 May 1667 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after 1714. He served in the militia about 1689. Pope {e} says he was “impressed into the Provincial Army” (i.e., drafted) in Jan 1688/89, but we don’t know why -- I don’t know of any wars going on at that time. The last mention of Nicholas is a land transaction in 1714.

2844.4. Huldah Cheney (1669 MA - 1709) had descendants and is expanded below.

2844.5. Mary Cheney (1671 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2844.6. Martha Cheney (1673 MA - 1729 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2844.7. Nathaniel Cheney {a,b,wa,wc} was born 6 Sep 1675 and died 30 Jul 1677. Some have his birth on 2 Oct; perhaps that is the baptism date.

2844.8. Jemima Cheney (1677 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2844.9. Nathaniel Cheney {e,wc} was born about Mar 1680 (baptized 21 Mar).

2844.10. Eldad Cheney (1681 MA - 1755 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2844.11. Hannah Cheney {a,b,e,wa,wc} was born 13 Sep 1683 (some have 12 Sep) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Several web sources give her death as 6 Dec 1776, without attribution. She married 10 Dec 1702 in Newbury, Lionel Chute [2846.4], son of James Chute (1649 MA) and Mary Wood. Lionel was born 15 Apr 1681 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after Apr 1730, the date of the last known deed signed by him.
Hannah and Lionel had nine children (Jemima 1703, Mary 1706, Lydia 1709, Sarah 1714, Samuel 1718-1718, John 1720-1791, Samuel 1722, Hannah 1724, and Elisabeth 1726), listed under Lionel.

2844.12. Ichabod Cheney {a,b,e,wa,wc} was born 22 Sep 1685 (some have 27 Sep) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1712. Chute {b} says he died about 1711, and Pope {e} says “soon after” his marriage. Ichabod married 5 Jan 1707/08, Ann Chute [2846.3], daughter of James Chute (1649 MA) and Mary Wood. Ann was born 9 Oct 1679 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts. She married second, 3 Dec 1712, Thomas Brown, son of John Brown and Ruth Huse.

2844.13. Lydia Cheney {b,e,f,wa,wc} was born 5 Nov 1687 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died around 1780. We originally had, from various web sources, that Lydia married first about 1706, Samuel Plummer [5688.5.1.1], son of Joseph Plummer and Hannah Jewett; that Samuel died about 1708; and that Lydia married second, 27 Apr 1709 (some have 28 Jan 1708), Jeremiah Poor, son of Henry Poor (1650) and Abigail Hale (1662). Jeremiah was born 10 Jan 1682/83. He died according to some in Dec 1738; but if the third marriage is correct, his death would have to be sometime before Aug 1713. Her multiple marriages and lack of solid dates are a cause of confusion. Some {wa} have Lydia married first to Jeremiah Poor and second, 15 Aug 1713, John Lull, son of Thomas Lull and Elizabeth Whitmore. John was born 29 Nov 1663 in Dedham (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in Oct 1742 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Chute {b} has a first marriage to Jeremiah Poor and a possible marriage about 1718, to either Samuel Plummer or ___ Lull. Pope {e} has the first marriage Jeremiah Poor, second to Samuel Plummer, and third John Lull, with no marriage or death dates.

2844.1. Peter Cheney {a,b,e,wa,wb,wc} was born on 6 Nov 1663 (some have 1664) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after Apr 1718. He married 7 Oct 1691 in Watertown (Middlesex) Massachusetts, Mary Holmes. Some {b} have her as a daughter of Nathaniel Holmes. But Pope {e} believed she was actually the widow of ___ Holmes, and had a daughter, Mary Holmes, when she married Peter. This is based mainly on a document in which Peter calls Henry Poor, who had married the younger Mary, his son-in-law. (It may be Pope’s rather convoluted argument that has led some to think Peter died in 1701.) Mary was born about 1665 and died 28 Jan 1746 in Watertown (Middlesex) Massachusetts. On 10 Jan 1694/95 they received a half-interest in the sawmill from Peter’s father. Peter served in the militia in 1704, Queen Anne’s War. The last record for him is his signature on a power of attorney document in Apr 1718.
Peter and Mary had three children (first cousins to us):

2844.1.1. Nicholas Cheney {b,c,e} was born 14 Mar 1692/93 (some have 1692) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Several web sources gives his death as 7 Aug 1774, without attribution. He married 1 Dec 1717 in Newbury, Hannah Tenney, daughter of James Tenney (1650 MA) and Abigail Lambert (1665 MA - 1756). 2844.1.1.3. Gershom Cheney {b,c} was born about Feb 1723/24 (baptized 16 or 17 Feb) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Most web sources have 17 Feb as the birth date, and have Gershom and Eldad as twins. Some sources have Gershom born in 1722.

2844.1.1.4. Eldad Cheney {b,c} was born about Feb 1723/24 (baptized 16 or 17 Feb) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

2844.1.1.5. Benjamin Cheney {b,c,e} was born 13 Apr 1725 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 6 Nov 1753 in Newbury, Judith Holman, daughter of John Holman (1705 MA - 1762) and Judith Huse (1708 MA - 1785 MA). Judith was born 15 Dec 1731 in West Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Her brother John marries Benjamin’s sister Hannah, below. Benjamin served in a militia company in the Revolutionary War, 30 Mar 1778 to 3 Jul 1778. Benjamin and Judith had nine children (Judith 1754-1761, Molly 1756-1761, Abigail 1759-1761, Benjamin 1760-1761, another Benjamin 1763, another Judith 1764, Abel 1768, Samuel 1769, and Gershom 1770). There may have been some epidemic in June 1761, as all of their first four children died that month.

2844.1.1.6. Nicholas Cheney {c} was born probably around 1727 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. The birth is not recorded, he is known only from a grant of land from his father in 1778.

John was born 14 Feb 1727/28 in West Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 17 Aug 1774 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. His sister Judith marries Hannah’s brother Benjamin, above.

2844.1.2. Rhoda Cheney {b,e} was born 20 Oct 1695 probably in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She was baptized 14 Oct 1696. Chute {b} has her as Mary Cheney, and says she died as a child.

2844.1.3. Benjamin Cheney {b,e,wb} was born 6 Jan 1697/98 {b} or 1698/99 {e} in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1760. The death date is unknown, but adminstration of the estate was given to sons Benjamin and Timothy on 17 Jun 1760. Benjamin married 12 Nov 1724 in Hartford (Hartford) Connecticut, Elizabeth Long, daughter of Thomas Long and Sarah Elmer. Elizabeth was born in 1696 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 3 Nov 1759 in East Hartford (Hartford) Connecticut.

2844.1.3.4. Timothy Cheney {e,wb} was born 10 May 1731 in East Hartford (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 27 Sep 1795 in Manchester (Hartford) Connecticut. He married first, 19 Jan 1758 in East Hartford, Mary Olcott, daughter of Nathaniel Olcott (1701 CT) and Hannah Pitkin (1707 CT). 2844.4. Huldah Cheney {a,b,e,wa,wc,wd} was born in 1669 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Savage {a} is uncertain that she is a member of this family, placing her here based upon her marrying a Worcester brother at the same time as Mary and Martha. She married first, 20 Jan 1690/91 (some have 29 Jan), Timothy Worcester, son of Samuel Worcester and Elizabeth Parratt. Timothy (also seen as Timothy Worster) was born 4 Jun 1669 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 13 Aug 1706 in Bradford. (Bradford was a separate town until 1850, and is now part of Haverhill.) Huldah is supposed to have married second, in 1718, Simon Daykin, but this is questionable (see Huldah Cheney).
Huldah and Timothy had two children that we know of (first cousins to us):

2844.4.1. Samuel Worcester {wd}, called Samuel Worster, was born 23 Oct 1691 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 27 Jan 1714/15 in Newbury, Joanna Pettingell (also seen as Joanna Pettingall), daughter of Samuel Pettingell and Sarah Poore. Joanna was born 10 Feb 1688/89 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Samuel married second, Hannah ___. In the absence of Joanna’s death date or Hannah’s marriage date, we are assuming all children are Joanna’s -- some may actually be Hannah’s.
Samuel and Joanna had at least three children (second cousins to us):

2844.4.1.1. Timothy Worster {wd} was born 12 Nov 1715. He married 1 Nov 1743, Elizabeth Clark.

She married first, 29 Jan 1690/91 (some have 20 Jan), Francis Worcester (or possibly William), son of Samuel Worcester and Elizabeth Parratt. Savage has Mary married to Francis’ brother William, but we follow most later sources which have Francis. Francis, called Francis Woster {wd}, was born in 1665 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts (some have Rowley), and died 17 Dec 1717 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. Their first few children were born in what was then called Bradford, now part of Haverhill.

He married 5 Dec 1717, his cousin Mary Dakin, daughter of Joseph Dakin and Dorothy Worcester. Mary was born 1 Jun 1696 in Concord (Middlesex) Massachusetts. Timothy and Mary are first cousins, both grandchildren of Samuel Worcester and Elizabeth Parratt outside our lines. 2844.5.4. Francis Worcester {e,wd} was born 7 Jun 1698 and died 14 Oct 1783 in Hollis (Hillsborough) New Hampshire. He married first, 18 Apr 1720 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, Abigail Carleton, daughter of Joseph Carleton. Abigail was born 23 May 1696 in Andover (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Jul 1774. Francis married second, Mrs. Martin. Francis worked as a blacksmith in Concord, Littleton and Bradford Massachusetts. In 1735 he was ordained a Congregational minister and preached in Sandwich, Massachusetts for about ten years. He then moved to Exeter New Hampshire, Plaistown, and fially Hollis, New Hampshire.
Francis and Abigail had five children (second cousins to us):

They had four children, born probably in the 1740’s to early 1750’s (Mary, Hannah, Samuel and Abigail). Jesse served in the French and Indian War. He was at the siege of Oswego, in which the French under Montcalm captured the British Forts Ontario and Oswego. Jesse was taken prisoner, probably with the Fort garrison on Aug 14, and taken to Montreal where he died.

2844.5.4.3. Hannah Worcester {wd} was born 7 Oct 1724 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 2 Mar 1808. She married ___ Churchill.

Noah and Lydia had seven children (Noah 1758-1837, Jesse 1761-1834, Lydia 1762-1789, Sarah 1765-1849, Leonard 1767-1846, Thomas 1768-1831, and Samuel 1770-1821). Noah married second, 29 Sep 1772, Hepzibah Sherwin. Hepzibah was born 30 Apr 1746 in Boxford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 2 Jul 1831. There is a problem with the marriage date as given. Source {wd} gives the second marriage as 28 Apr 1763, without attribution, but also states that all children are from the first marriage. Either the marriage date is incorrect, or most of the children are actually Rebecca’s. John and Mary had at least one child (John 1762). John had seven more children with either Mary or Rebecca(Rebecca 1764-1828, Molly 1765, Sarah 1767, Asa 1770-1802, Abigail 1774, Eli 1777-1834, and Alpheus 1785-1834).

2844.5.6.3. Judith Wooster {wd} was born 1 Jan 1734.

2844.5.7. William Worcester {e,wd} was born 13 Nov 1706 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1788 in Falmouth (Cumberland) Maine. He married 9 Jan 1733, Mary Hovey.

2844.5.8.1. Jonathan Worcester {wd} was born 23 Sep 1733 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, and died Nov 1812 in Groton (Middlesex) Massachusets. Worcester {wd} has marriages to Lucy Green and Eunice Nutting and lists ten children; but as these are all born when Jonathan is age 57 to 76, I think they are probably assigned to the wrong Jonathan and am not including them here.

2844.5.8.2. Samuel Worcester {wd} was born 20 Mar 1735 and died 31 May 1735.

2844.5.8.3. Sarah Worcester {wd,wh} was born 20 Mar 1736. She married 5 May 1763, John Cummings, son of William Cummings (1702-1757) and Sarah Harwood (1706-1769). John was born 24 Apr 1733 and died in 1772.

2844.5.8.6. Benjamin Worcester {wd} was born 8 Aug 1742 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 7 Feb 1821 in Weathersfield (Windsor) Vermont. He married about 1773 Molly Wood. 2844.5.8.8. Mary Worcester {wd} was born probably around 1745 and died in 1811.

2844.5.8.9. Francis Worcester {wd} was probably around 1750, and died 5 Nov 1836 in Groton (Middlesex) Massachusetts. He married 11 Apr 1775, Mary Simmons. Mary was born about 1759 and died in 1839 in Groton (Middlesex) Massachusetts. Francis and Mary had nine children (Hannah, Benjamin 1817, Anna, Lucy, Mary, Francis, Job, Asa, and James).

2844.5.9. James Worcester {e,wd}, called James Wooster, was born 15 Sep 1712 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before Apr 1760 in what was then Pearson Town, now Standish (Cumberland) Maine. He married 26 Feb 1740, Patience Mills. Patience was born 26 Jan 1716 in Lynn (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 6 Jan 1809 in Gorham (Cumberland) Maine. 2844.5.9.3. Hannah Wooster {wd} was born in 1751 in Falmouth (Cumberland) Maine.

2844.5.10. Mary Worcester {e,wd,wl} was born 22 Dec 1714. She married 22 Dec 1736, her cousin Josiah French [5690.1.10.3], son of Timothy French and Ruth Greeley. Josiah was born 14 Mar 1712/13 in Salisbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 9 Apr 1789. Josiah and Mary are second cousins, both being descended from 5690 Nicholas Noyes and Mary Cutting. (One source {wl} has an earlier marriage to Nathaniel Bailey, and a first child Nathaniel Bailey (who would be 2844.5.10.1), born 30 May 1736 and who married [2844.10.2.3] Mary Spofford below. Although the timing of the birth and the marriage to Josiah just barely allows this, the death date for Nathaniel Sr. is given as 1750, and the marriage date to Nathaniel is given as 1726 when Mary was only 12. So, I believe they probably have the wrong Mary Worcester.)
Mary and Josiah had twelve children (second and third cousins to us):

2844.5.10.1. Francis French {wd} was born 21 Aug 1737.

2844.5.10.2. Timothy French {wd} was born 23 Apr 1739.

Savage {a} is uncertain that she is a member of this family, placing her here based upon her marrying a Worcester brother at the same time as Mary and Huldah. Martha married twice, and had children from both marriages.
Martha married first, 29 Jan 1690/91, William Worcester (or possibly Francis), son of Samuel Worcester and Elizabeth Parratt, also seen as Elizabeth Parrott. Savage has Martha married to William’s brother Francis; we are following most later sources which have William. 2844.6.1.4. William Worcester {c,wd} was born probably 4 Feb 1728/29 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. Tenney {c} has the birth date as 4 Feb 1728, and {wd} has 4 Feb 1729. He married first, about 1745, his cousin Sarah Tyler, daughter of Samuel Tyler and Sarah Tenney (1696). Sarah was born 19 Apr 1724, and died in 1776 in Littleton (Middlesex) Massachusetts. 2844.10. Eldad Cheney {a,b,e,wa,wc} was born 24 Oct 1681 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1756 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts (his will was proved 17 Apr 1756). Bradford was a separate town until 1850, and is now part of Haverhill. He may have gone by the name Eldad Chaney, and Pope {e} says he was the first in the family to use such a spelling. Eldad married three times and had children from the first two marriages.
He married first, 31 Dec 1707, Mary Walker, daughter of Shubael Walker and Patience Jewett. Some have Mary born 30 Oct 1669 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Mar 1733 in Bradford. I suspect her birthdate is in error.
Eldad and Mary had two children that we know of, there may be others (first cousins to us):

2844.10.1. Ichabod Cheney {b,e} was born 7 Mar 1709/10 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 12 Mar), and died in 1797 in Bradford; his will was proved 7 Aug 1797. He is called Ichabod Chaney in his father’s will. He married 25 Jul 1739, Rebecca Smith [2834.8.3], daughter of John Smith and Ann Hopkinson. Rebecca was born 24 Oct 1714 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
Ichabod and Rebecca had six children (second cousins to us through both parents):

2844.10.1.1. Ann Cheney {e,we} was born in 1740 (baptized 21 Sep 1740) in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1800. She married 19 Feb 1771 in Rowley, Samuel Holmes, son of Benjamin Holmes and Mary Burbank. Samuel was born in 1742 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 7 Apr 1823. Ann and Samuel had three children (Nathaniel 1776-1849, Jane 1778, and Mary 1780).

2844.10.1.2. Rebecca Cheney {e,wf} was born in 1743 (baptized 5 Nov 1743) in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 1769, Moses Hazen, son of Jeremiah Hazen and Sarah Adams. Moses was born 9 Dec 1743 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died Jul 1826 in Weare (Hillsborough) New Hampshire. Rebecca and Moses had seven children (John 1772, Rebecca 1774, Moses 1776, Jeremiah 1778, Daniel 1781, Jesse 1783, and Sally 1786).

2844.10.1.3. Hannah Cheney {e} was born 17 Aug 1745 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 18 Aug), and died in 1800.

2844.10.1.4. John Cheney {e} was born 6 Oct 1747 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 29 Mar 1748).

2844.10.1.5. David Cheney {e} was born 11 Sep 1750 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 11 Dec 1750). He married 19 Nov 1776 in Andover (Essex) Massachusetts, Phebe Russell. David served in the Revolutionary War.

2844.10.1.6. Daniel Cheney {e} was born 5 Feb 1754 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Dorcas ___. Daniel suffered a long period of mental illness.

2844.10.2. Hannah Cheney {b,e,wg} was born 18 May 1712 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 6 May 1755. She married 6 Mar 1734/35, David Spofford (some have Daniel Spofford), son of Jonathan Spofford and Jemima Freethy. David was born 4 Dec 1710 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
Hannah and David had six children (second cousins to us):

2844.10.2.1. Abijah Spofford {wg}, also seen as Abijah Spafford, was born 22 Apr 1736 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 17 Dec 1755, Mary Towne. Mary was born in 1736 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 9 Sep 1802 in New Hampshire. Abijah and Mary had eight children (Hannah 1757, Hepzibah 1759, Jesse 1761, Amos 1765, Abijah 1767, Mehitabel 1771, Mary 1774, and Samuel 1779).

She also brought children from her first marriage.

2844.10.2.3. Mary Spofford {wg,wl,wm} was born 14 Sep 1740 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She probably married a Nathaniel Bailey, but beyond that it is a real mess. Some have her married 20 Oct 1759, to Nathaniel Bailey, son of Nathaniel Bailey (1703 MA - 1750 MA) and Mary Worcester. Source {wl} identifies his mother as our [2844.5.10] Mary above, but there are several date conflicts, and I believe they have the wrong Mary. Others have Mary married 20 Oct 1769, Nathaniel Bailey, son of Alexander Bailey and Susan Parker. Some have Nathaniel born 30 May 1736 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Oct 1828 in Townsend (Middlesex) Massachusetts. Others have him born 20 Oct 1751 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.

2844.10.2.4. Eliphalet Spofford {wg,wn} was born 4 Feb 1743/44 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after 1790 in Vermont. He married 5 Jan 1769, Abigail Douglass. Eliphalet and Abigail had four children (Hannah 1769, Dorcas 1770, Samuel 1774, and Eliphalet 1776).

2844.10.2.5. Eldad Spofford {h,wg} was born 2 Jan 1744/45 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (some have Townsend, Massachusetts), and died in 1809 in New Hamphsire. He married Lucy Spaulding. Eldad and Lucy had thirteen children (Lydia 1769, Jesse 1771, Eliphalet 1773, Henry 1775, Lucy 1777, Hannah 1779, Sarah 1780, Isaac 1782, Betsey 1784, Milly 1786, Daniel 1788, Artemas 1791, and Earl 1793). Eldad served in the Revolutionary War, and was in the battles of Trenton and Princeton.

2844.10.2.6. Jesse Spofford {wg} was born about 1753 (baptized 11 Feb 1753).

Eldad married second, 28 Mar 1734 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, Joanna Woodbury, daughter of John Woodbury and Alice Derby. Joanna, also seen as Johanna Woodbury, was born 16 Nov 1699 in Beverly (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1747.
Eldad and Joanna had two children (first cousins to us):

2844.10.3. Mary Cheney {b,c,e} was born 29 Jun 1735 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. She is called Mary Chaney in her father’s will. She married 14 Apr 1757 in Bradford, Ebenezer Tenney, son of John Tenney (1693 MA - 1732) and Hannah Jewett (1699 MA). Ebenezer was born 1 Mar 1729/30 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
Mary and Ebenezer had three children (second cousins to us):

2844.10.3.3. Daniel Tenney {c} was born 22 Feb 1762.

2844.10.4. Joanna Cheney {b,c,e} was born 5 May 1738 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. She is called Joanna Chaney in her father’s will. She married 25 Jun 1761, Daniel Tenney, son of Daniel Tenney and Ann Coleman. Daniel was born 16 Mar 1734 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in Jan 1815. Daniel served in the Revolutionary War, from Sep to Nov 1777. He was a farmer and cabinet maker. The family, except for son Eldad, moved to Hopkinton, New Hampshire.
Joanna and Daniel had nine children (second cousins to us):

2844.10.4.2. Eldad Tenney {c} was born 20 Apr 1764 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Polly Bodsworth, and settled in Newtown, Connecticut. He served in a militia company in the Reolutionary War, from July to Oct 1780. Eldad and Polly had three children (we know only one, Maria), who were still very young when Eldad died.

2844.10.4.3. Rhoda Tenney {c} was born 25 Aug 1766, and died in 1788 of scarlet fever.

Moses and Polly had thirteen children (Rhoda 1791, Moses, Mary 1795-1884, Anna 1796-1820, Daniel 1798, Eldad 1799, Adolphus 1801, Loren 1804-1831, Sarah 1805, Priscilla 1807-1823, Gracie 1809, Rachel 1812-1821, and Ambrosia 1815), of whom we list one:

2844.10.4.4.2. Moses Tenney {c} was born 28 Jun 1793, and died 23 Sep 1814. He served in the War of 1812, and died in the war.

2844.10.4.5. Thomas Tenney {c,e} was born 21 Sep 1771 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Oct 1841 near Newport (Sullivan) New Hampshire. He married first, Hannah Long. Moses married second, his cousin Susanna Cheney [5688-ISAAC,5 (Nathaniel,4 Daniel,3 Daniel,2 John,1)], daughter of Isaac Cheney (1744 MA) and Abiah Hunkins. Susanna was born 21 Sep 1773 in Dunbarton (Merrimack) New Hampshire, and died 20 Dec 1844. Thomas was a carpenter. We don’t know which wife was the mother of the children. Tenney {c} implies Hannah died early, but does not give a date for her death nor a date for the second marriage. Thomas and Hannah and/or Susan had nine children, probably born in Newport (Sullivan) New Hampshire (Joshua 1795, Mary 1798, Hannah 1800, Temperance 1802, Thomas, Susan 1809, Abijah 1810, Isaac 1814, and Daniel 1816).

2844.10.4.6. Joshua Tenney {c} was born probably about 1772, and died at age 17 in Vermont, killed by a falling tree.

2844.10.4.7. Aaron Tenney {c} was born 11 Jul 1774 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 22 Feb 1865 in Vermont. He married Abiah Davis. Abiah was born 12 Dec 1773 in Hopkinton (Merrimack) New Hampshire, and died 23 Dec 1836 in Vermont. They were members of the Congregational Church in Thetford, Vermont. Aaron and Abiah had five children (Joshua 1806, Betsey 1810-1877, Ephraim 1810, George 1813-1856, and Mary 1816).

2844.10.4.8. Joanna Tenney {c} was born 8 Mar 1776 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died probably in New York. She married 2 Oct 1794 in Hopkinton (Merrimack) New Hampshire, John Hoyt, son of Eastman Hoyt and Martha Clough. John was born 30 Apr 1771. His first cousin Anna marries Joanna’s brother Paulus. Joanna and John had seven children (John, Daniel, Anna, Martha, Sally, Lucy, and Maria).

2844.10.4.9. Paulus Tenney {c} was born 24 Sep 1781 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Sep 1844 probably in Ohio. He married 12 Aug 1804, Anna Hoyt, daughter of Samuel Hoyt and Anna Sibley. Anna was born 26 Sep 1781, and died 16 Sep 1865 in Bowling Green (Clay) Indiana. Her first cousin John marries Paulus’ sister Joanna. Paulus graduated Dartmouth, and was a medical doctor. They lived about 18 years in New Hampshire, then moved to Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Paulus and Anna had six children (Maria 1805-1812, Franklin 1806-1878, Nancy 1808, Paulus 1810-1810, William 1812-1812, and Sylvanus 1817).

Eldad married third, in 1747, Martha Palmer, widow of Joseph Worcester.
