Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

2840. Samuel Brocklebank was born in 1628 in England, and died 21 Apr 1676 in Sudbury, Massachusetts. He is a son of John Brocklebank [5680] and Jane ___ [5681]. Samuel married 18 Mar 1652 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts,

2841. Hannah ___. Hannah was born in 1632 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 6 Sep 1690 in Rowley. Her maiden name is unknown -- she is seen in a few website sources as Hannah Dole, but that is from her second marriage.
Hannah married second, 4 Mar 1678/79, Richard Dole, son of William Dole and Joan Hale. He had ten children from a previous marriage to Hannah Rolfe, five of whom merge into our family, including several into this specific family.

Samuel’s birthplace was given in a web source as Essex (Yorkshire) England, but I am unable to find any town called Essex within Yorkshire; perhaps they meant Essex or Yorkshire? Samuel and Hannah built a two-story house in Georgetown (small town west of Rowley) shortly after their marriage. The house stayed in the family until 1754. It is still standing, and is a museum today (108 E. Main St, Georgetown). Samuel served in King Philip’s War, a Captain of Militia from Rowley. They were the fort garrison at Marlborough Massachusetts about February and March 1676, about 25 miles west of Boston and at that time the frontier of the colony. The Wampanoag (actually it was a federation and may have been Wampanoag, Narraganset, Pequot and/or Mohegan) attacked Marlborough on 26 March 1676 and burned a large part of the town, the garrison being too small to go out and attack them. Most of the people abandoned the town and moved to Boston until the end of the war, leaving only the fort garrison. The town was attacked again on 18 April, the few remaining houses being burnt. The Wampanoag were not strong enough to attack the fort, and the garrison was too weak to go out and attack the Wampanoag. After a day or two the Wampanoag moved east toward Sudbury. Captain Samuel Wadsworth at this point was sent out from Boston with another 50 men. Captain Brocklebank now brought the Marlborough garrison to Sudbury, where he joined up with Wadsworth. Brocklebank and Wadsworth fell into an ambush on 21 April and were killed along with most of their men. A monument marks the spot. Samuel is buried in Rowley. (Capt Samuel Wadsworth is not directly related to us, but one of his nephews and one of his grandnephews will marry into our family, and he is a distant great-uncle to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.)

Samuel and Hannah had nine children:

2840.1. Samuel Brocklebank [1420] (1653 MA - ) and Elizabeth Platts are direct ancestors, separate page.

2840.4. Hannah Brocklebank was born 28 Mar 1659 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 23 Apr 1749 in Rowley. She married 9 Jun 1680 in Rowley, John Stickney, son of William Stickney (1592-1665) and Elizabeth Dawson (~1595-1680). John was born 14 Jan 1640 in Rowley, and died in 1709 in Rowley.
Hannah and John had seven children (first cousins to us):

2840.4.1.1. Ezekiel Sawyer {wa} was born 16 Jun 1707 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 26 Jun 1766 in Rowley. He married 10 Dec 1730 in Rowley, Mehitabel Jewett, daughter of Aquila Jewett and Ann Tenney. She married on 14 Aug 1709, Richard Dole, son of Richard Dole (1650-1723) and Sarah Greenleaf (1655-1718). Richard (some list him as Richard Dale) was born on 28 Apr 1678 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He had first married in 1706 Sarah Ilsley, and had one son (Enoch) from that marriage. A few sources have Elizabeth marrying his father, Richard Sr. Elizabeth and Richard are sort of stepcousins, as his grandfather married her grandmother.
Elizabeth and Richard had five children (second cousins to us):

2840.4.2.1. Edmund Dole was born 12 Nov 1710 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He married on 12 Sep 1735, Mehitabel Todd [2834.3.5], daughter of James Todd and Mary Hopkinson. Mehitabel was born 3 Aug 1711 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Jul 1779.

John was born 21 Jun 1689 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 2 Jan 1764 in Rowley.
Mary and John had nine children (both second and third cousins to us):

2840.4.3.4. Mary Palmer was born 1 Jun 1717 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Her death is uncertain; some have 2 Nov 1763 at Exeter (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and others have sometime after 1799 in Nottingham (Hillsborough) New Hampshire -- probably two people are being identified as the same. She married 1 May 1741 in Rowley, Moses Duty, son of William Duty and Elizabeth Hidden. Moses was born 2 Sep 1700 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Apr 1778 in Exeter (Rockingham) New Hampshire.

His death is uncertain; some have 29 Oct 1805 in Rowley, and some have 6 Jan 1807 in Sterling, Massachusetts, again probably two different people of the same name being confused. He married 5 Mar 1754, Elizabeth Bennett, daughter of John Bennett.

2840.4.4. Samuel Stickney was born 26 Mar 1690 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 3 Nov 1760 in Rowley. He married 15 Nov 1715, Susannah Perley, daughter of Samuel Perley (1667-1746) and Abigail Cummings (~1676-1726). Susannah was born 19 Nov 1697 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 12 Jul 1773 in Rowley. One source has Samuel serving in King Philip’s War, which is obviously impossible -- perhaps he was in one of the other French and/or Indian Wars, but we haven’t seen anything else to indicate this -- probably was a different person of the same name.
Samuel and Susannah had ten children (second cousins to us):

2840.4.4.1. Samuel Stickney was born 25 Jul 1716 probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He never married, probably died young.

Mary was born 2 Sep 1718 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 7 Feb 1803 in Amesbury (Essex) Massachusetts. William served in the French and Indian War, and was a member of the Rowley Committee of Safety during the Revolutionary War.

We don’t know of any children from this first marriage. Jane married second, 13 Nov 1730, Timothy Palmer, son of Thomas Palmer (1650-1732) and Hannah Johnson (1656-1732). Timothy was born 10 Jan 1694/95 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 30 Dec 1773 in Rowley. William was born 11 Apr 1660 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 31 Jan 1717 in Newbury. His father married her mother when William was 19 and Mary was about 16. If all the dates are correct, they did not get married until the second child was on the way.
Mary and William had nine children (first cousins to us):

2840.6.1. Mary Dole was born 14 Nov 1681 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 26 Dec 1777 in Newbury. She married 30 Apr 1708, Joshua Boynton, son of Joshua Boynton and Hannah Burnap. Joshua was born 4 May 1679 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Oct 1770 in Newbury.
Mary and Joshua had twelve children (second cousins to us):

2840.6.1.1. Sarah Boynton was born 23 Apr 1708 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 14 May 1714 in Newbury, age 6.

2840.6.1.2. Jeremiah Boynton was born 14 Oct 1709 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 7 Mar 1775 in Newbury. He married Mary Coleman (also seen as Mary Colman), daughter of Ephraim Coleman and Susanna ___. Mary was born 14 Jun 1706. Jeremiah died of consumption (TB).

2840.6.1.3. Mary Boynton was born 26 Mar 1711 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 2 Apr 1711 in Newbury, age 1 week (but see also Jemima, following).

2840.6.1.4. Jemima Boynton was born 26 Mar 1711 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 2 Apr 1711 in Newbury, age 1 week. Hmmm... I could accept that Mary and Jemima were twins, but the same death date is a stretch -- I suspect one of them might possibly be a transcription error.

2840.6.1.5. David Boynton was born 15 Dec 1712 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 8 Feb 1757 in Newbury. He married 19 Sep 1738, Mary Stickney [2838.6.2.7], daughter of Benjamin Stickney (1673-1756) and Mary Palmer (1674-~1747). Mary was born 2 Sep 1711 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2840.6.1.6. Moses Boynton was born 18 Apr 1714 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 13 May 1742 in Newbury, Abigail Goodridge (also seen as Abigail Goodrich), daughter of Samuel Goodridge and Hannah Frazer. Abigail was born 15 Mar 1717 (some have 15 Apr1716), and died in 1770.

2840.6.1.7. Joshua Boynton was born 20 Jan 1717 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Feb 1763 in Hollis (Hillsborough) New Hampshire. He married 14 Apr 1743 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, Martha Stickney [2838.6.2.9], daughter of Benjamin Stickney (1673-1756) and Mary Palmer (1674-~1747). Martha was born about Aug 1714 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1778 in Hollis (Hillsborough) New Hampshire.

2840.6.1.8. Mary Boynton was born 25 Apr 1719 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Jun 1798 in Newcastle (Lincoln) Maine. She married on 25 Apr 1739 in Newbury, Jonathan Leighton, son of Richard Leighton and Abigail Elithorpe. Jonathan was born 19 Oct 1715 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 15 Aug 1772 in Newcastle (Lincoln) Maine.

2840.6.1.9. Apphia Boynton was born in 1721 (baptized 12 Nov 1721) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

2840.6.1.10. Jane Boynton was born in 1723 (baptized 6 Oct 1723) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married Richard Goodridge, son of Edmund Goodridge and Hannah Dole. (Some have Richard’s mother as our [2840.6.2] Hannah Dole, making Richard a first cousin to Jane. But we have the latter Hannah with another marriage at same time, with overlapping birth dates for children.) Richard was born 2 Mar 1719 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Oct 1797 in Newbury.

2840.6.1.11. Hannah Boynton was born 7 Feb 1725/26 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1784. She married Matthew Lunt.

2840.6.1.12. Enoch Boynton was born 28 Nov 1727 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1805. He married in 1747 Rachel Foster, daughter of Benjamin Foster and Susanna Andrews. Rachel was born 3 May 1716. Enoch is said to have served in one of the French and Indian Wars, and to have been in the battle of Louisburg. Source did not say which war (there were two wars with a Louisburg battle, 1745 and 1758).

2840.6.2. Hannah Dole was born 28 Mar 1685 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1755 in Newbury. Some have her birth in Ipswich, but there is no indication that the family ever left Newbury -- perhaps she was married in Ipswich. There is some disagreement on her marriage and children -- or rather, there is disagreement on which of two Hannah Doles belongs in this family, see the text box following this paragraph. We follow what seems to be the consensus (recognizing that it may still be incorrect): Hannah married Robert Greenough [11386.1.1.1], son of Robert Greenough (~1650-1718) and Martha Epps (1654-1687). Robert was born 28 Feb 1682/83 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1718. There is one bit of circumstantial evidence which makes me favor this line over the alternate family. Hannah's father is named William, and her grandfather is Samuel. Two of the children in this family are named William and Samuel, but these names are absent in the alternative family below.
Hannah and Robert had eight children (both second and third cousins to us):

2840.6.2.1. Daniel Greenough was born 5 Nov 1705 probably in Ipswich or Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died Feb 1761 in Salem (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 20 Feb 1727 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, Mary Allen, daughter of William Allen and Sarah Walker. Mary was born on 27 Sep 1704 in Manchester (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after 1764.

2840.6.2.2. Samuel Greenough was born 25 Mar 1707 probably in Ipswich or Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Aug 1753. He married Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of Robert Mitchell (1669-1731) and Sarah Deering, and widow of Samuel Greenleaf. Elizabeth was born 8 May 1705 in Kittery, Maine.

2840.6.2.3. Martha Greenough was born about 1708 probably in Ipswich or Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after 1754. She married Joseph Walker, son of Richard Walker and Sarah Story. Joseph was born 29 Dec 1679 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Feb 1739.

2840.6.2.4. Richard Greenough was born about 1711 (baptized 22 Jul 1711) probably in Ipswich or Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime between 1754 and 1769. He married 20 Jul 1738 in Newbury, Hannah Sewall, daughter of Henry Sewall. Hannah was born about 1715 and died about 1769.

2840.6.2.5. Epps Greenough was born about 1711 probably in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He married about 1731 (int filed 11 Dec 1730) Margaret Moor. The intention is listed in both Newbury and Kittery Maine, so we don’t know where the marriage took place.

2840.6.2.6. Robert Greenough was born 21 Nov 1712 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1767 in Plaistow (Rockingham) New Hampshire. He married 27 Nov 1735 in Newbury, Edna Knight [2838.7.5.2], daughter of Richard Knight and Hepzibah Pearson. Edna was born 2 Jul 1718 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Aug 1806 in Atkinson, New Hampshire.

2840.6.2.7. William Greenough was born 2 May 1714 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1754. He married about 1749 (int filed 11 Aug 1749) in Newbury, Judith Chase.

2840.6.2.8. Moses Greenough was born 30 Apr 1717 probably in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1754.

Some web sources have a completely different family for Hannah. The complete overlap of two sets of children indicates that there must have been two Hannah Doles. We cannot be certain at this time which one is “ours”. The other scenario has:

2840.6.2. Hannah Dole, married in Nov 1701 Edmund Goodridge
Hannah and Edmund had eight children (second cousins to us):

2840.6.2.1. Edmund Goodridge was born about 1703.

2840.6.2.5. Abigail Goodridge was born about 1712.
2840.6.2.6. Anne Goodridge was born about 1716.
2840.6.2.7. Richard Goodridge was born about 1719. He married his first cousin Jane Boynton [2840.6.1.10].
2840.6.2.8. Oliver Goodridge was born about 1722.

2840.6.3. William Dole was born 12  Jan 1685/86 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 8 Aug 1752 in Newbury. 2840.6.4. Richard Dole was born 31 Dec 1689 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Mar 1778 in Newbury. He married 21 May 1719 in Newbury, Sarah Emery, daughter of Stephen Emery (1666-1747) and Ruth Jaques (1672-1764). Sarah was born Jan 1695 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after Mar 1779.

Plummer (1697-1722) and Rebecca Wheeler (1694-1790). John was born 25 Dec 1723 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 15 Dec 1803.

2840.6.4.5. Anne Dole was born 26 Nov 1729 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 24 Nov 1747, William Ilsley, son of William Ilsley and Ruth Hazelton (possibly our 5638.1.7.5 Ruth? - cannot find the connection). William was born 10 May 1723 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died on 14 Jan 1756 in Newbury.

2840.6.4.6. Eliphalet Dole was born 19 Feb 1732 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in childhood.

Samuel and Elizabeth had ten children (second cousins to us):

2840.6.8.1. Elizabeth Dole was born 31 Jul 1722 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 11 Jun 1805 in Newbury. She married 4 Oct 1742 in Newbury, her cousin Henry Dole, son of Abner Dole (1672-~1740) and Mary Jewett (1674-1695). Henry was born 28 Oct 1695 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1766 in Newbury. Henry and Elizabeth are first cousins once removed, both descending from Richard Dole and Hannah Rolfe. They are also “stepcousins” of a sort, as Elizabeth is a granddaughter of Richard’s second wife 2841 Hannah [Brocklebank].

2840.6.8.2. Samuel Dole was born 31 Mar 1724 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1795. He married 7 Apr 1752 in Newbury, Mary Genneson. Mary was born in 1725 and died in 1800.

Some have her married 28 Sep 1749 in Newbury to her cousin Benjamin Lunt [5690.9.3.5], son of Benjamin Lunt and Hannah Noyes. Benjamin was born 14 Nov 1728 in Newbury. Other web sources have her married about 1749 to Benjamin Swett. Since we have no death dates for either Benjamin, it is possible that she married both, order unknown.
