Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

2838. John Pearson {a,b} was born in 1609 in Yorkshire, England, and died 22 Dec 1693 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He is a son of Micholas Pearson [5676]. John, also seen as John Peirson, married

2839. Dorcas Pickard {a,b}. Dorcas was born in 1621 in Yorkshire, England, and died 12 Jan 1702/03 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She is a daughter of John Pickard [5678] and Ann Lume [5679].

Note that some sources have John’s parents as John Pearson and Elizabeth Brett. I haven’t seen any original documents myself. We are assuming Nicholas as the father, following the lead of several web sources who have seemed to be reliable. I suspect there is a confusion with another John Pearson of Lynn and Reading, who is about the same age (see Savage).

John was a carpenter and sometime Deacon. They were in Rowley, Massachusetts by 1643, and John is listed as a freeman 1647. He built and ran the first fulling mill in America, and at other times ran a grist mill and a sawmill.

John and Dorcas had twelve children:

2838.1. Mary Pearson {a,b} was born 21 May 1643 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in childhood, sometime before 1751 in Rowley. Some have 26 May for her birth, that might be the baptism date.

2838.2. John Pearson (1644 MA - 1723 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2838.3. Elizabeth Pearson (1646 MA - 1717 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2838.4. Samuel Pearson (1648 MA - 1721 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.

2838.5. Dorcas Pearson (1650 MA - 1728 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2838.6. Mary Pearson (1652 MA - 1716) had descendants and is expanded below.

2838.7. Jeremiah Pearson (1653 MA - 1737 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2838.8. Sarah Pearson {a,b} was born 3 May 1655 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died Oct 1655 in Rowley, age 5 months.

2838.9. Joseph Pearson {a,b} was born 21 Oct 1656 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Aug 1675 in Hatfield (Hampshire) Massachusetts, age 18. Joseph served in Lothrop’s Company in King Philip’s War, and was killed in battle.

2838.10. Benjamin Pearson (1658 MA - 1731 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2838.11. Phebe Pearson [1419] (1660 MA - 1732 MA) and Timothy Harris are direct ancestors, separate page.

2838.12. Stephen Pearson (~1662 MA - 1706 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2838.2. John Pearson {a,b} was born 27 Dec 1644 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 19 Mar 1722/23 (some, as {a}, have 1696) in Rowley. He married 14 Feb 1670/71, his cousin Mary Pickard [5678.2.2], daughter of John Pickard (~1622-1683) and Jane Crosby (1627-1716). Mary was born about 1652 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 13 Apr 1728 in Rowley. Mary and John are first cousins, both descending from 5678 John Pickard and Ann Lume.
John was appointed deacon in 1686.
John and Mary had seven children (both first and second cousins to us):

2838.2.1. Sarah Pearson {b} was born in Apr 1672 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 9 Jan 1734/35 in Rowley. She married 16 Jun 1696, Jonathan Plummer [5688.5.7], son of Joseph Plummer (~1630-~1709) and Sarah Cheney (1636-1692). Jonathan was born 13 May 1668 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 26 Sep 1726 in Newbury.

2838.2.1.1.1. John Plummer was born 25 Dec 1723 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 15 Dec 1803 (some have 1765). The birth dates for John and Jonathan are clearly impossible; I am giving them as found, but obviously something is wrong here. Either one of the dates is incorrect, or (as is also suggested by the similarity of their names) the assignment of either John or Jonathan to these parents is incorrect. I have seen no other suggestions for their placement, so am keeping it as found for now. John married 4 Apr 1751, Abigail Dole [2840.6.4.4], daughter of Richard Dole and Sarah Emery. Abigail was born 14 Apr 1727 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 May 1807.

2838.2.1.4. Jonathan Plummer was born 14 Aug 1705 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 16 Jan 1753 in Newbury. He married 22 Apr 1732, Mary Johnson.

Benjamin was born 4 Mar 1681/82 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 22 Jun 1734 in Rowley.

We’re not sure which Mary Ransom this was: some have her as the daughter of Joseph Ransom and Jane ___, born 13 May 1709 in Lyme and died there 5 Jul 1732; others have her born 30 Aug 1711, daughter of Robert Ransom and Alice Newton, married 20 Mar 1728/29.

John was born 10 Oct 1645 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 25 May 1691.
Dorcas and John had ten children (first cousins to us):

2838.5.1. Jonas Eaton was born probably about 1676 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Mar 1677. His birth date is uncertain, the given date of 13 Mar 1677 conflicting with the given birth date for Grace (i.e. born two months apart). The dates for both Jonas and Grace fall in the period where the year is ambiguous -- it should have been given the double year (1675/76, 1676/77, etc.), and probably was at one point. Assuming they are both assigned correctly to this family, one or both dates as given is obviously wrong, probably due to some old error in transcribing the double-year date into a single year.

2838.5.2. Grace Eaton was born 12 Jan 1677 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 19 Jul 1756 in Reading. She married 8 Oct 1695 in Reading, John Boutwell, son of James Boutwell (~1642-1716) and Rebecca Kendall (1645-1713).

Mary was born 10 Nov 1692 in Lynn (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Nov 1730 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts. She is apparently unrelated to our Pearson family, as least as far back as 1600; she could at best be a third cousin to Joseph.
Joseph and Mary had five children (second cousins to us):

2838.5.6.1. Joseph Eaton was born 5 Nov 1711 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts. He married 20 Nov 1730, Elizabeth Mansfield, daughter of Samuel Mansfield (1687 - 1719) and Mary Benighton (d. 1763). Elizabeth was born 27 Aug 1708 in Lynn (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 18 Mar 1771 in Lynn.

Jonathan was born 23 Feb 1690/91 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 28 May 1773 in Reading. He was a farmer. Phebe and three of their children died from an epidemic in July-August 1749.
Phebe and Jonathan had eight children (second cousins to us):

2838.5.10.1. Jonathan Nichols was born 5 Nov 1717 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died of smallpox, Oct 1754 in Wakefield (Middlesex) Massachusetts. He married Hannah Damon, daughter of Joseph Damon (1686-1777) and Mary Batchelder (1688-1754). Hannah was born 25 Apr 1720 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died  Sep 1754 in Wakefield (Middlesex) Massachusetts. Her death only a month apart from her husband suggests she also may have died from smallpox. Her mother also died in October.

2838.5.10.3. Phebe Nichols was born 27 Aug 1721 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts. Her death is given as 23 Jul 1749 in Reading, but this is the same date as her mother and may be a transcription error -- there were however several epidemics (smallpox, scarlet fever, diphtheria) in New England at this time, so it is possible they both died on the same day. Her sister Hepzibah and brother Joseph below also died around this time.

2838.5.10.4. Benjamin Nichols was born 4 Nov 1723 in Reading (Middlesex) Massachusetts. He married Mary Trow. Benjamin inherited the family farm and home.

He married on 26 Dec 1727, his cousin Jane Pickard [5678.2.6.8], daughter of Samuel Pickard (1663-1751) and Elizabeth Hale (1668-1730). Jane was born on 5 May 1704 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1736. Jane and Joseph are second cousins once removed, both being descended from 5678 John Pickard and Ann Lume. Samuel married second, 6 Jun 1733, Faith Platts, daughter of Isaac Platts (1673-1711) and Elizabeth Jewett. Faith was born 8 Jun 1710 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 31 Mar 1801 in Rowley.
Samuel and Faith had nine children, of whom we list three (third cousins to us):

She married 15 May 1765 in Rowley, her cousin Benjamin Stickney [2832.4.11.3], son of 2838.6.2.1 Benjamin Stickney and 2832.4.11 Elizabeth Spofford. John was born about 1715 (baptized 12 May 1717) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died on 21 Jan 1774. As Sarah was 59 at the time of this marriage, we assume she probably had a previous marriage, unknown. John had first married in 1747 Hepzibah Jewett, daughter of Ezekiel (she was b. Oct 1724, d. Aug 1771). John had ten children from the first marriage, and seven were under age 18 at his marriage to Sarah.

Samuel was born 6 Jun 1674 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 13 Dec 1745 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
Martha and Samuel had six children (second cousins to us):

2838.6.3.1. Samuel Hale was born 23 Oct 1699 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 May 1770 in Bradford. He married first, 5 Dec 1723, Hannah Hovey, daughter of Luke Hovey and Susanna Pillsbury. Hannah was born 18 Jul 1703 in Boxford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 27 Oct 1724. Samuel married second, 13 Dec 1725 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, Sarah Hazeltine 2832.4.2.1], daughter of Robert Hazeltine and Sarah Spofford. Sarah was born 1 Sep 1703 in Bradford, and died there 31 Jan 1771.

He married 29 May 1740 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, Sarah Bond, but there is some conflict among sources as to which Sarah Bond. Some have Sarah Bond, daughter of Joseph Bond and Elizabeth Simons. She was born 1 Sep 1723 and died 25 Aug 1808. Other sources identify her as Sarah Bond, daughter of John Bond and Mary Hale. She was born 21 Oct 1716. This is one of the hazards of relying only on website sources, but in truth most of the original marriage records themselves give only the names of the people being married, and we are often guessing at the most logical parents.

2838.6.4. Thomas Palmer was born 19 Sep 1684 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 12 Oct 1727 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut. He married 19 Oct 1710 in Charlestown (Suffolk) Massachusetts, Sarah Davis. There is disagreement among sources as to which Sarah Davis this is: some have her as the daughter of Hopewell Davis (~1644 - 1712) and Sarah Boynton (1658 - 1704), born 20 Oct 1690; others have her as the daughter of Nathaniel Davis and Mary Converse, who was born 22 Jul 1683. I haven’t seen any original documents and have no opinion at this time on which one is correct.
Thomas and Sarah had one child that we know of, there may be others (second cousin to us):

2838.6.4.1. Samuel Palmer was born 20 Nov 1712 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 21 May 1761 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut. George was born 21 Jan 1687 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 8 Jun 1758 in Rowley.
