These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. Jonathan Hopkinson and Hester Clarke

2834. Jonathan Hopkinson was born 9 Apr 1643 (some have 9 Feb 1642/43) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 11 Feb 1718/19 in Rowley. He is a son of Michael Hopkinson [5668] and Ann Gott [5669]. Jonathan married first, 11 May 1666 in Rowley,

2835. Hester Clarke. Hester was born 10 Oct 1645 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1678 in Rowley. She is a daughter of Richard Clarke [5670] and Alice ____ [5671].

Jonathan married second, 10 Jun 1680, Elizabeth Dresser, daughter of John Dresser (~1607-1672) and Mary ___. Elizabeth was born 10 Mar 1649/50 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 9 Mar 1717/18 in Rowley.

2834.1. Hester Hopkinson [1417] (1667 MA - 1722 MA) and Thomas Burpee are direct ancestors, separate page.

2834.2. Mary Hopkinson was born about May 1668 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in infancy, sometime before Jul 1669.

2834.3. Mary Hopkinson (1669 MA - 1749 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

2834.4. Jeremiah Hopkinson was born 20 Feb 1672 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1718.

2834.5. Richard Hopkinson was born 14 Mar 1674 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1718.

2834.6. Mighill Hopkinson was born 14 Mar 1674 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Sarah Colman.

2834.7. Jonathan Hopkinson was born about May 1676 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1718.

2834.3. Mary Hopkinson was born 9 Jul 1669 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Nov 1749 in Rowley. She married 22 Jun 1699 in Rowley, James Todd, son of John Todd (~1650-1690) and Susanna ___. James was born 8 Feb 1671/72 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 17 Jun 1734 in Rowley.

2834.3.1. Mary Todd was born 15 Apr 1700 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 8 Sep 1758 in Rowley. She married 7 Nov 1722 in Rowley, Elliot Payson, son of Edward Payson (1657-1732) and Elizabeth Phillips (1665-1724). Elliot was born 11 Mar 1699/00 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 May 1774 in Rowley. His brother Edward also marries into our family, 1418.3 Phebe Harris.

2834.3.1.1. Elizabeth Payson was born 23 Mar 1723/24 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Aug 1796 in Rowley. She married 17 Oct 1755 in Rowley, her cousin Joseph Burpee [1416.1.2], son of Jeremiah Burpee and Rebecca Jewett. Joseph was born 28 Jul 1719 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Jan 1776 in Rowley. Elizabeth and Joseph are second cousins, through 2834 Jonathan Hopkinson and Hester Clarke.
Elizabeth and Joseph had one child (Elizabeth), listed under Joseph.

2834.3.1.2. Edward Payson was born in 1728 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Some web sources have his death at 1769 based on a gravestone, but that marker belongs his uncle Edward (who married 1418.3 Phebe Harris). We also find this Edward as married to a Phebe ___, but with the gravestone confusion, I also hold the marriage suspect.

2834.3.1.4. Elliot Payson was born 16 May 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Dec 1799 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. He married on 30 Nov 1760 in Rowley, Mary Hazeltine [2832.4.2.3.3], daughter of David Hazeltine and Rachel Frye. Mary was born 18 Jun 1741 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Apr 1826 in Bradford.

2834.3.3. Jonathan Todd {wa} was born 28 Dec 1704 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married in 1729, Hannah ___. Hannah is seen listed as Hannah Todd, but with no parents given I cannot say that is her maiden name. Hannah was born in 1707 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 21 Apr 1774 in Rowley.

2834.3.3.1. James Todd {wa} was born 4 May 1734 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 17 Jun 1808 in Rowley. He married 7 Dec 1756 in Rowley, Ann Sawyer [2840.4.1.1.1], daughter of Ezekiel Sawyer and Mehitabel Jewett.
James and Ann had four children (Sarah 1758 MA; Mehitabel 1762 MA; James 1764 MA; Jonathan) of whom we list one (third cousin to us):

2834.3.3.1.4. Jonathan Todd {wa} was born 23 Jan 1769 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 13 May 1849 in Rowley. He married 26 Jun 1810 in Rowley, Jane Noyes [2846.2.8.3.2], daughter of Nathaniel Noyes and Mary Tenney. Jonathan and Jane are third cousins once removed, both descending from Thomas Tenney and Ann Mighill.

2834.3.3.2. Nathan Todd {wa} was born 4 Jun 1741 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Jun 1808 in Rowley. He married 26 Mar 1776 in Rowley, Jane Scott, daughter of Joseph Scott and Jemima Jewett.

2834.3.4. Jeremiah Todd was born 17 Mar 1707/08 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after 1749 in Rowley. He married 27 Sep 1739, Johanna Kilbourne [2816.2.3.4], daughter of Joseph Kilbourne (1684-1723) and Mary Clarke (1684-1771).

2834.3.5. Mehitabel Todd was born 3 Aug 1711 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Jul 1779. She married 12 Sep 1735, Edmund Dole [2840.4.2.1], son of Elizabeth Stickney and Richard Dole. Edmund was born 12 Nov 1710 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

2834.3.6. Hannah Todd was born 23 May 1714 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Apr 1801 in Rowley. She married 10 Aug 1738 in Rowley, Nathan Boynton, son of Richard Boynton (1675-1732) and Sarah Dresser (1678-1759). Nathan was born 27 Sep 1704 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 13 May 1766 in Rowley. His sister Sarah also marries into our family, 2816.2.2.3 Jonathan Chaplin.
Hannah and Nathan had four children (second cousins to us):

2834.3.6.1. James Boynton was born 5 Aug 1739 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 18 Jun 1775 in Charlestown (Sufflok) Massachusetts. He served in the Revolutionary War, was fatally wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill, and died the next day in the nearby town of Charlestown.

2834.3.6.2. Mary Boynton was born 18 Apr 1744 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 21 Apr 1818.

2834.3.6.3. Richard Boynton was born 8 Oct 1746 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 19 May 1766.

2834.3.6.4. Moses Boynton was born 27 Nov 1752 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 19 Jan 1823 in Rowley. He married about Aug 1786 (intention filed 3 Aug), Lucy Howe, daughter of Abraham Howe and Lucy Appleton. Moses served in the Revolutionary War, and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

2834.8. Ann Hopkinson was born 18 Feb 1677/78 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 12 Dec 1723. She married twice, and had children from both marriages.

Ann married first, Jeremiah Nelson, son of Philip Nelson (1635 Eng - 1691 MA) and Elizabeth Lowell (1646 - 1731 MA). Jeremiah was born 15 Nov 1674 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Jul 1706 at Dunstable (Middlesex) Massachusetts, killed by Mohawks. This was in Queen Anne’s War (1702-1713, England et al. vs. France and Spain). On the evening of 3 July, a party of about 250 Mohawk attacked Rowley and Dunstable, killing about ten people, mostly civilians. They remained in the area, and on 10 July ambushed a small group of militia, killing Jeremiah as well as our Joseph Kilbourne (2816.2).

2834.8.1. Jonathan Nelson was born 27 Oct 1702 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 11 Feb 1703 in Rowley, age 3 months.

2834.8.2. Jane Nelson was born 26 Jan 1703 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 30 Mar 1778 in Rowley. She married 3 Aug 1723 in Rowley, William Searle, son of Samuel Searle and Deborah Bragg. William was born 8 Sep 1690 in Rowley, and died 18 May 1778 in Rowley.
Jane and William had nine children (second cousins to us):

2834.8.2.1. Jeremiah Searle was born 27 May 1723 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Oct 1799 in Rowley. He married Mary Thurston, daughter of Stephen Thurston and Mary Knight. Mary was born 3 Jun 1716.

2834.8.2.5. Tryphena Searle was born 21 Jan 1734 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 15 Feb 1734 in Rowley, age 1 month.

2834.8.2.6. David Searle was born 24 Nov 1736 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 22 May 1760 in Gloucester (Essex) Massachusetts, Judith Sayword.

2834.8.2.9. Jonathan Searle was born 16 Nov 1746 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

Ann married second, 9 Dec 1709 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, John Smith. John was born 17 Mar 1677/78 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died on 8 Nov 1726 in Newbury. He had previously married 5638.1.1.1 Sarah Plummer.
Ann and John had one child that we know of, there may be others (first cousin to us):

2834.8.3. Rebecca Smith was born 24 Oct 1714 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 25 Jul 1739, Ichabod Cheney [2844.10.1], son of Eldad Cheney (1681-1755) and Mary Walker (~1685-1733). Ichabod was born 7 Mar 1709/10 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1797 in Bradford.
Rebecca and Ichabod had six children (Ann, Rebecca, Hannah, John, David, Daniel), listed under Ichabod.
