Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

John was born 13 Mar 1654 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. We don’t know of any children from the second marriage.

2819.6. Sarah Bennett was born 15 Sep 1682 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1754 in Wiscassett (Lincoln) Maine. She married on 21 Jan 1705/06 in Rowley, John Decker, son of John Decker and Mary Scott. John was born 20 Nov 1683 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1754 in Wiscassett (Lincoln) Maine.
Sarah and John had eight children (first cousins to us):

2819.6.1. John Decker was born 29 Mar 1707 in Kittery (York) Maine, and died Sep 1789. He married 15 May 1729 in Amesbury (Essex) Massachusetts, Lydia Eastman.

2819.6.2. Sarah Decker was born 10 May 1709 in Kittery (York) Maine. She married Oct 1726 in Portsmouth (Rockingham) New Hampshire, Clement Meserve, son of Clement Meserve and Elizabeth Jones. Clement (also seen as Clement Messervey) was born about 1703 in Portsmouth (Rockingham) New Hampshire (some have Newington, New Hampshire), and died in (1746?) in Standish, Maine. The given death date conflicts with the given birth date of their last child in 1749. Either one of the dates is incorrect, or the placement of Nathaniel is incorrect.
Sarah and Clement had eight children (second cousins to us):
2819.6.2.1. John Meserve was born in 1727 in Scarborough (Cumberland) Maine (baptized 13 Oct 1728). He married first, Mar 1757, Mary Yeaton. He married second, 28 Jan 1762, Sarah Strout. John and Sarah were living in Standish, Maine at least as late as the 1800 census.

2819.6.2.2. Elizabeth Meserve (called Libby) was born in 1730 in Scarborough (Cumberland) Maine, and died 6 Aug 1795. Her birth date was given as 2 Sep, but I don’t really trust it because the same date was given for her brother Clement. Elizabeth married in 1751, Edmund Phinney, son of John Phinney and Martha Cookson. Edmund was born 2 Jul 1723 in Barnstable (Barnstable) Massachusetts, and died 15 Dec 1808.

2819.6.2.3. Clement Meserve was born in 1733 in Gorham (Cumberland) Maine. His birthdate was given as 2 Sep, the same as his sister Elizabeth -- possible, but I expect one of them is wrong -- or perhaps 2 Sep is the baptism date for both. Clement married 19 Sep 1757, Mary Wooster [2844.5.9.2], daughter of James Wooster and Patience Mills. Mary was born about 1742 and died Jun 1834.

2819.6.2.4. Hannah Meserve was born about 1736 (baptized 7 Mar 1736) in Maine. She married in 1754, Timothy Crocker.

2819.6.2.6. Margaret Meserve was born in 1741 (baptized 23 Aug 1741) in Standish (Cumberland) Maine. She married Feb 1757, William Wescott. William was born in 1729 in Falmouth (Cumberland) Maine.

2819.6.2.7. Benjamin Meserve was born in 1744 (baptized 4 Jul 1744) in Standish (Cumberland) Maine, and died 25 Feb 1822 in Appleton (Knox) Maine. He was married and had children, but the name of his wife is unknown.

2819.6.2.8. Nathaniel Meserve was born 26 Jan 1748/49, and died Oct 1815. He married Rebecca Martin (also seen as Rebecca Marlin). They were both living in Bristol (Lincoln) Maine in 1790, and in Appleton (Knox) Maine in 1806.

2819.6.3. Mary Decker was born 1 Mar 1710/11. She married 30 Jan 1728/29, John Hodsdon, son of John Hodsdon.

2819.6.4. Hannah Decker was born probably sometime in the 1710’s. She married 17 Feb 1731, Hatevil Nutter. There is some disagreement between sources on Hatevil -- some have him as Hatevil III, son of Hatevil and Sarah ___. Others have him as Hatevil, son of John Nutter and Rosamund Johnson.
Hannah and Hatevil had ten children (second cousins to us):

2819.6.4.1. Sarah Nutter was born about 1732. She married Anthony Nutter, son of James Nutter and Abigail Furber, and grandson of John Nutter and Rosamund Johnson. That would make Sarah and Anthony first cousins, if Sarah’s grandparents are John and Rosamund as above.

2819.6.4.2. Hannah Nutter was born about 1734.

2819.6.4.3. Joseph Nutter was born about 1736.

2819.6.4.4. Mary Nutter was born about 1739.

2819.6.4.9. Lois Nutter was born about 1752.

2819.6.4.10. Abigail Nutter was born about 1755.

2819.6.5. Elizabeth Decker was born probably sometime in the 1710’s. She married 19 Sep 1734, Joseph Moody, son of Daniel Moody and Mary Norton. There is some conflict among sources as to when they died. Some have that Joseph died in 1752, and that Elizabeth may have remarried shortly before her death in 1775. Others have that Elizabeth died before 1760, and that Joseph remarried, 30 Oct 1760, Mary Nutter. They were Congregational.
Elizabeth and Joseph had six children (second cousins to us):

2819.6.5.1. Joseph Moody was born 14 Jan 1738/39 in Scarborough (Cumberland) Maine. He married Mary ___. Mary was born about 1740 and died in 1816.

Joseph and Rachel had three children (second cousins to us):

2819.6.6.1. Molly Decker was born probably around 1740 in Boothbay (Lincoln) Maine, and died 18 Dec 1815. She married in 1771 in Boothbay, her first cousin William Decker [2819.6.7.1], son of David Decker and Eunice Place.

2819.6.6.2. Joseph Decker was born probably around 1740 in Boothbay (Lincoln) Maine, and died in 1792. He married Sarah Davis.

2819.6.6.3. Spencer Decker was born probably around 1740 in Boothbay (Lincoln) Maine, and died about 1816. He married Ann Cochran, daughter of Robert Cochran and Martha ___.

2819.6.7. David Decker was born about 1719 (baptized 4 Oct 1719) in Newington (Rockingham) New Hampshire. He married 9 Apr 1741, Eunice Place. Eunice was born in 1717 in Portsmouth (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died in 1810.
