George Kilbourne [Gen 12, son of 5632 Thomas Kilbourne & Frances Moody]

Elizabeth Barker [daughter of 5634 ___ Barker]

Our information on this family is mostly from published books, with some secondary website sources.  We are presenting what we have found, but cannot say anything about the accuracy.

5634.  unknown Barker was born probably sometime around 1590 in England.  His wife is unknown.

We only know of two children, there were probably others:

5634.1.  James Barker was born sometime around 1610 in England, and died in 1678 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

5634.2.  Elizabeth Barker [2817] follows directly below.

2816. George Kilbourne was born  Feb 1611/12 in Wood Ditton (Cambridge) England, and died 14 Oct  1685 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  He married in Rowley,
2817.  Elizabeth Barker.  Elizabeth (seen in places as Elizabeth Baker) was born probably around 1615 in England, and died in 1698 in Rowley.

The origin of the name Barker is uncertain.  It may be derived from Middle English meaning a tanner of leather, or it may be Norman French meaning a shepherd. Our interpretation is even more uncertain, as some sources call her Elizabeth Baker.  In that case it originates from the occupation of baker.

George came to Wethersfield Connecticut, on the "Increase" in 1635.  He was in Roxbury Massachusetts by 1636, and in Rowley Mass by 1639, being one of the first settlers there.  He had a house on Bradford Street, and one acre of land.  Most of our information on George and his descendants is from the Genealogical Dictionary of New England.  Other sources say he did not come with the family in 1635, but on a later boat. One source (D.L. Jacobus) says he is not included in Thomas' will, and therefore questions whether he was a son of Thomas.

George and Elizabeth had six children:

2816.1.  Mary Kilbourne was born 3 May 1649 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married 30 Dec 1674, Nathaniel Chapman.

2816.2.  Joseph Kilbourne (1652 MA - 1706 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.

2816.3.  Jacob Kilbourne was born 12 Jan 1655 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 18 Sep 1675 at Bloody Brook near Hadley (Hampshire) Massachusetts.
Jacob served in the militia in King Philip's War.  He was a member of Lothrop's Company (the "Flower of Essex").  Jacob was among 60 to 70 militia killed by the Wampanoag at the Battle of Bloody Brook.  John Plummer [5638.1.3] was also killed.  They were ambushed while trying to bring some wagons of corn across the creek from Deerfield, which had been earlier overrun, to the town of Hadley.

2816.6.  Elizabeth Kilbourne (1663 MA - d. MA) had descendants and is expanded below. 

2816.2.  Joseph Kilbourne was born 1 Feb 1652 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Jul 1706 in Dunstable, Massachusetts.  He married May 1678 in Massachusetts, Frances Trumbull (some have Mary Trumbull), daughter of John Trumbull and Deborah Jackson.  Frances was born in 1654, and died on 9 Feb 1715 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  Her nephew, Jonathan Trumbull, married into Bill's side (Beahm 7862.7.2.7 Faith Robinson).
Joseph was killed by Mohawks during Queen Anne's War.  On the evening of 3 July, a party of about 250 Mohawk attacked Rowley and Dunstable, killing about 10 people, mostly civilians. Joseph was part of a militia group sent out from Rowley. The Mohawks remained in the area, and on 10 July ambushed the militia at Dunstable, killing Joseph. Jeremiah Nelson, husband of 2834.8 Ann Hopkinson, was also killed.

2816.2.1.  Joseph Kilbourne was born 20 Oct 1678 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in infancy sometime before 1679 in Rowley.

2816.2.2.  Ann Kilbourne was born 28 Nov 1680 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Aug 1751 in Rowley.  She married in 1704 Jeremiah Chaplin, son of Joseph Chaplin (1645 MA - 1705 MA) and Elizabeth West (~1650 - 1702 MA).  Jeremiah was born 27 Jul1680, and died on 17 Dec 1765 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.2.2.1.  Sarah Chaplin was born sometime around 1705 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 27 Jul 1780 in Rowley.

2816.2.2.2.  Mercy Chaplin was born about Mar 1705 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 3 Apr).  She married 15 Mar 1724/25 in Rowley, Solomon Nelson, son of Francis Nelson (1675 - 1720) and Mercy Ray.  Solomon was born 15 Nov 1703 in Rowley, and died 8 Apr 1781.

2816.2.2.3.  Jonathan Chaplin was born about Feb 1707 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 16 Feb), and died 1 Jan 1794 in Rowley.  He married 2 Sep 1730, Sarah Boynton, daughter of Richard Boynton and Sarah Dresser.  Some have Feb 1730 for marriage, that may be when they posted the intention.  With Boynton and Dresser ancestry, Sarah may be related to us.  They had eight children.

2816.2.2.4.  Mary Chaplin was born 7 Aug 1709 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married 23 Dec 1736 in Rowley, Jonathan Harriman [5694.4.7.1], son of Leonard Harriman (1694 - 1785) and Martha Plummer (1697 - 1733).  Jonathan was born 2 Apr 1715 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1801 in Georgetown (Essex) Massachusetts (some have died 1796 in Rowley).  They had six children, but two died at birth.

2816.2.2.5.  Mehitable Chaplin was born about Oct 1711 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 14 Oct), and died 31 Oct 1711 in Rowley, age 1 month.

2816.2.2.6.  Joseph Chaplin was born about Jan 1713 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 13 Jan), and died 28 Feb 1713 in Rowley, age 1 month.

2816.2.2.7.  David Chaplin was born about Jan 1714 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 13 Jan), and died in 1775 in Rowley.  He married on 10 Jan 1738 in Rowley, Mary Bradstreet, daughter of Jonathan Bradstreet and Sarah Wheeler.  Mary was born 5 May 1714 in Rowley, and died about 1809 in Baltimore (Windsor) Vermont.  Mary is not directly related to us, but her father is a half-brother to the children of 2836.1 Elizabeth Harris.  David and Mary had nine children.

2816.2.2.8.  Joseph Chaplin was born about Jan 1716 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 13 Jan), and died 27 May 1790 in Lunnenburg (Worcester) Massachusetts.  He married 1 Dec 1747 in Rowley, Sarah Seeton.  They had six children, born in Massachusetts between 1748 and 1760.

2816.2.2.9.  Daniel Chaplin was born about Mar 1719 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 5 Apr), and died in infancy, 16 Apr 1719 in Rowley.

2816.2.2.10.  Ebenezer Chaplin was born about Jul 1720 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 3 Jul).  He married 5 Jan 1744 in Rowley, Rebecca Poor.  Rebecca was born around 1720, and died 25 Dec 1763.  They had nine children.

2816.2.2.11.  Ann Chaplin was born about Oct 1721 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 15 Oct).  She married 10 Oct 1743 in Rowley, Thomas Burpee [1416.4.1], son of Thomas Burpee and Mary Harris.  Thomas was born 24 Nov 1719 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts.  They had seven children, listed under Thomas.

2816.2.2.12.  Elizabeth Chaplin was born about Mar 1722/23 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 17 Mar), and died 3 May 1723 in Rowley, age 2 months.

2816.2.2.13.  Jeremiah Chaplin was born about Dec 1724 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 3 Jan), and died 4 Jul 1736 in Rowley, age 12.

2816.2.2.14.  Elizabeth Chaplin was born about Apr 1729 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 20 Apr).

2816.2.2.15.  Lucy Chaplin was born about 1733 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Jul 1736 in Rowley, age 3.

2816.2.3.  Joseph Kilbourne was born 16 Jan 1684 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Mar 1723.  He married 6 Jun 1707 Mary Clarke [5670.4.5], daughter of John Clarke and Mary Poore.  Mary was born 8 Feb 1683/84, and died 3 Nov 1771.

2816.2.3.1.  Sarah Kilbourne was born 23 Jul 1711 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  She Married 4 Jan 1731/32 Edward Chapman.

2816.2.3.2.  Elizabeth Kilbourne was born 5 Nov 1713 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married 1 Jan 1733/34 James Barker.  James is probably related to us, but I have been unable to find his parents.

Elizabeth and James had several children, of whom we list one (third cousin to us):

2816.2.3.2.1.  Sarah Barker was born 29 Sep 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married our cousin David Burpee, but there is some disagreement as to which David.  Some have her married 24 Mar 1759 to David Burpee [1416.6.4] son of Jonathan Burpee and Mehitabel Jewett.  We follow this one, until some evidence to the contrary is seen.  Others have her married to David Burpee [1416.5.7] son of Ebenezer Burpee and Miriam Pearson.  As we don't have death dates for either David, it is even possible that she married both. 
Sarah and David had one child that we know of, listed under David who is closer to the main line.

2816.2.3.3.  Mary Kilbourne was born 3 Jan 1715/16 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Sep 1800 in Rowley.  She married 21 Dec 1737 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, David Dresser [2832.6.5], son of Samuel Dresser and Mary Burpee.  (There is some slight disagreement about this marriage also.  Some have David married to Mary's cousin, 1408.4 Mary Kilbourne. I think that is clearly an error though, as that Mary is 12 years older than David and was married to someone else.)  David was born 12 Feb 1709 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 22 Dec 1788 in Rowley.

Mary and David had six children, listed under David.

2816.2.3.4.  Johanna Kilbourne was born 7 Dec 1717 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married 27 Sep 1739, Jeremiah Todd [2834.3.4], son of James Todd (1672-1734) and Mary Hopkinson.  Jeremiah was born 17 Mar 1707/08 in Rowley, and died sometime after 1749 in Rowley.

2816.2.3.5.  Joseph Kilbourne was born 2 Jul 1719 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Sep 1806.  He married first, 17 Dec 1741, Sarah Thurston.  They had six children.  Sarah died 9 Sep 1753 from childbirth.  Joseph then married 6 Mar 1755, Dorothy Pickard.  Dorothy died on 12 Aug 1793.

2816.2.3.6.  Ebenezer Kilbourne was born 11 Feb 1720 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Nov 1808 in Rowley.  He married 24 Aug 1743 in Massachusetts, Abigail Hovey.  Abigail was born around 1715, and died 24 Dec 1804 in Rowley.  They had several children, among whom Abigail (12 Oct 1750 - 2 Dec 1817) married 22 Jun 1774 John Sawyer, son of Ezekiel Sawyer.  No known relation, but gives us yet another loose-end Sawyer connection to itch my obsession.

2816.2.4.  George Kilbourne was born 21 Jan 1687 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 8 Jun 1758 in Rowley.  He married 13 May 1712 in Rowley, Phebe Palmer [2838.6.5], daughter of Samuel Palmer (1644 MA - 1719 MA) and Mary Pearson (1652 MA - 1716).  Phebe was born on 19 Sep 1684 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Sep 1762.

2816.2.4.1.  Mehitabel Kilbourne was born 6 Feb 1712/13 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 17 Dec 1741, Jonathan Jewett, son of John Jewett and Elizabeth Howe. Jonathan was born 2 Dec 1685 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 11 Dec 1773 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He had previously married Mehitabel's cousin Anne Hopkinson [2838.3.5].

2816.2.4.2.  Hannah Kilbourne was born 23 Aug 1715 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.2.4.3.  Ann Kilbourne was born 9 Mar 1716/17 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.2.4.8.  Sarah Kilbourne was born about 1726 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 22 Apr 1809 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married in 1754 Philemon Howe, son of Jacob Howe (1689 MA - 1772 MA) and Eleanor Sherwin (1695 MA - 1757 MA).  Philemon was born on 13 Jun 1730 in Stoneham (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Jun 1819 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.2.4.9.  Abigail Kilbourne was born 18 Oct 1730 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.2.5.  Mary Kilbourne was born 22 Sep 1689 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married 31 Jul 1723 Ephraim Nelson.

2816.2.6.  Elizabeth Kilbourne was born 22 Jun 1692 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Dec 1692 in Rowley, age 5 months.

 2816.2.7.  Abigail Kilbourne was born 14 Jul 1694 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married in Aug 1727 Richard Clarke [5670.4.2], son of John Clarke (1650-1736) and Mary Poore (1652-1726).  Richard was born 10 Nov 1677 in Rowley, and died 11 Jul 1730 in Rowley.  Richard had several children from a previous marriage.

2816.4.  Samuel Kilbourne was born 11 Sep 1656 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 22 Apr 1722 in Rowley.  He married Nov 1682 in Rowley, Mary Foster, daughter of William Foster.  Mary was born 15 Mar 1661 in Rowley, and died 1 Nov 1731 in Rowley (some have death as 30 Aug 1756).

2816.4.1.  Hannah Kilbourne was born 20 Oct 1683 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Jan 1713.  She married 5 Apr 1704 in Rowley, Judah Clarke [5670.4.4], son of John Clarke (1650-1736) and Mary Poore (1652-1726).  Judah was born 7 Feb 1680/81 in Rowley.

2816.4.1.2.  Hannah Clark was born 9 Sep 1708 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1733.  She married 9 Mar 1725 in Rowley, Daniel Foster, son of Abraham Foster and Mary Robinson.  Daniel was born 13 Apr 1705 in Ipswitch (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 30 Apr 1752 in Harvard, Massachusetts.  They had four children, born between 1725 and 1731.

2816.4.1.4.  Judah Clark was born 2 Oct 1711 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.4.2.  Samuel Kilbourne was born 20 Jul 1687 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 14 Aug 1761.  He married 7 Dec 1734 Mary Lovell.

2816.4.3.  David Kilbourne was born 12 Mar 1689 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Oct 1775 in Lunenburg (Worcester) Massachusetts.  He married first, 25 Jan 1723, Elizabeth Fiske.  Elizabeth died sometime before 1730, no known children.  David then married 6 Mar 1730/31, Ruth Fiske.  There is some controversy over who exactly this Ruth is.  Some have her as born 20 Aug 1707 in Ipswitch (Essex) Massachusetts, daughter of Joseph Fiske (1672 MA - 1745) and Susanna Warner (1676 MA - 1742).  Others have her as born 18 Oct 1709, daughter of William Fiske and Mary.  This has been debated since the 1800's, so it is unlikely that there will ever be a correct answer.

2816.4.3.1.  David Kilbourne was born 10 Oct 1733 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died Jan 1733/34 in Rowley, age 3 months.

2816.4.3.2.  David Kilbourne was born 22 Nov 1734 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1736 in Rowley, age 1.

2816.4.3.3.  Jonathan Kilbourne17 Nov 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1806 in Lunenburg (Worcester) Massachusetts. He married 22 Jul 1760, Elizabeth Nelson [1420.2.2.2], daughter of Joseph Nelson and Lydia Pingry. Elizabeth was born 11 Aug 1737 in Rowley.

We list one of their children (David, who marries back into our lines) under Elizabeth.

2816.4.3.4.  David Kilbourne was born 2 Mar 1738/39 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.4.3.5.  Ruth Kilbourne was born 15 Jun 1740 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1746 in Rowley, age 6.

2816.4.3.6.  Samuel Kilbourne was born 12 Apr 1742 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1747 in Rowley, age 5.

2816.4.3.7.  William Kilbourne was born 9 Mar 1742/43 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 14 Aug 1831 in Lunenburg (Worcester) Massachusetts.

2816.4.3.8.  Lydia Kilbourne was born 22 May 1746 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.4.3.9.  Ruth Kilbourne was born 24 Feb 1747/48 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.4.3.10.  Samuel Kilbourne was born 10 Nov 1749 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.4.3.11.  Miriam Kilbourne was born 15 Jul 1753 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.4.4.  Mary Kilbourne was born 21 Jul 1696 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 23 Sep 1710, age 14.

2816.4.5.  Jedediah Kilbourne was born 20 Apr 1699 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Jan 1759.  He married 22 Mar 1723 Susannah Fiske.

Jedediah and Susannah probably had several children, but we only know of one (second cousin to us):

2816.4.5.1. Elizabeth Kilbourne was born 16 May 1732 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about Dec 1763 in Rowley. She married John Adams [2838.10.7.4], son of Sarah Pearson and John Adams. John was born 12 Apr 1721 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Apr 1804 in New London (Sullivan) New Hampshire. John and Elizabeth had five children (Elizabeth 1756, Jane 1757, Solomon 1759, Jebediah 1761, Mary 1763), third cousins to us through both parents.

2816.4.6.  Eliphalet Kilbourne was born in 1706 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Jan 1752.  He married in 1745 Jane Frazer.

2816.6.  Elizabeth Kilbourne was born 1 Feb 1663 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died probably in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts.  She married on 6 Sep 1693, Ephraim Curtis, son of Zacheus Curtis (~1620 Eng - 1683 MA) and Joanna ___ (1625 MA - d. MA).  Ephraim was born about 1662 in Gloucester (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in Boxford (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.6.2.  Mary Curtis was born 2 Jan 1698 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts.

2816.6.4.  Jacob Curtis was born 23 Apr 1701 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Apr 1776 in Arundel (York) Maine.  He married 4 Dec 1725 Abigail Bracy, daughter of William Bracy (~1675 - ~1757) and Mary Marston (1677 NH - <1715).  Abigail was born 26 Jan 1704/05 in York (York) Maine, and died 21 Aug 1801 probably in Maine.

2816.6.4.1.  Hannah Curtis was born about 1729 in Maine.  She married about 1748 Jedediah Wakefield, son of James Wakefield and Mary Durrell.

2816.6.4.2.  Mary Curtis was born about 1730 in Maine.  She married 15 May 1750 in Arundel (York) Maine, Dixey Stone, son of Nehemiah Stone and Lydia Hart.  Dixey was born 20 Nov 1713 in Beverly (Essex) Massachusetts, and died Sep 1791 in Arundel (York) Maine.

2816.6.4.3.  Elizabeth Curtis was born about 1742 in Maine, and died 8 Sep  1844 in Kennebunkport (York) Maine.  She married Asa Durrell, son of Philip Durrell and Keziah Wakefield.  Asa was born 16 May 1741 in Arundel (York) Maine, and died 11 Aug 1803 in Arundel.

2816.6.4.4.  Charity Curtis was born about 1745 in Maine.  She married John Lord, son of Tobias Lord and Jane Smith.

2816.6.5.  Ebenezer Curtis was born 31 Aug 1707 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts.  He married 14 Nov 1729 in Topsfield, Elizabeth Palmer, daughter of Samuel Palmer and Elizabeth Green.
Ebenezer and Elizabeth had ten children, but only one or two survived past childhood (second cousins to us):

2816.6.5.1.  Jacob Curtis was born 10 Mar 1730 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 22 Feb 1797 in Amherst (Hillsboro) New Hampshire.

2816.6.5.2.  Sarah Curtis was born 16 Aug 1732 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 11 Oct 1748 in Topsfield, age 16.

2816.6.5.3.  Abner Curtis was born 8 Nov 1733 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 11 Nov 1735 in Topsfield, age 2.

2816.6.5.4.  Elizabeth Curtis was born 7 Jan 1735 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts, and died four days later, 11 Jan 1735.

2816.6.5.5.  Hannah Curtis was born 31 Jan 1738 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts, and died five days later, 4 Feb 1738.

2816.6.5.6.  Stephen Curtis was born 21 Apr 1742 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 15 Oct 1747 in Topsfield, age 5.

2816.6.5.7.  Ephraim Curtis was born in 1745 in Topsfield (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in infancy, 16 Feb 1745.
