These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. John Cheney and Mary Chute

1422. John Cheney was born 10 May 1666 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 2 Sep 1750 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He is a son of Peter Cheney [2844] and Hannah Noyes [2845]. John married on 7 Mar 1693/94 in Rowley,

1423. Mary Chute {a}. Mary was born 16 Sep 1674 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Sep 1750 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She is a daughter of James Chute [2846] and Mary Wood [2847]. Savage has her born 12 Sep 1697, but this is in obvious conflict with the marriage date and the birth of her children. Either Savage has his date wrong, or there is possibly some mixup here with another Mary Chute -- in that case, we may have her parents wrong and the Chute line ends here.

1422.2. Martha Cheney was born 30 Jul 1700 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 17 Nov 1715, Tristram Coffin, son of James Coffin (1659) and Florence Hooke. Tristram was born 19 Oct 1694 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 19 May 1775. His sister Sarah Coffin also marries into our family, 5690.8.1 James Noyes.

1422.6. Judith Cheney was born about 1707 (baptized 6 Apr 1707) in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

1422.1. Edmund Cheney was born 29 Jun 1696 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 14 Mar 1761 in Newbury. He married 18 Nov 1714 in Newbury, his cousin Mary Plummer [5694.4.6], daughter of Benjamin Plummer (1656-1724) and Ann Wood (1660->1715). Mary was born 28 Jul 1694 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Jun 1748 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. Mary and Edmund are first cousins once removed, both being descended from 5694 Thomas Wood and Ann Hunt. They are also second cousins, descending from 5688 John Cheney and Martha Parrat.

Jane was born in 1741 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Jane and Elias are second cousins, both being descended from 5694.4 Ann Wood and Benjamin Plummer.

He married 1 Apr 1742 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, Rose Hardy, daughter of Thomas Hardy (1689-1771) and Deborah Wallingford (1701-). Rose was born 1 Mar 1725/26 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. Her brother marries Peter’s sister Mary, below.

1422.1.4.2. Susanna Cheney was born 29 Nov 1746 in Boxford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1772. She married 16 Oct 1766 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, her uncle John Cheney [1422.1.7], son of Edmund Cheney and Mary Plummer. This is an unusual arrangement, although such marriages did happen -- I have not seen any original documents, and might suspect another John Cheney could be confused for ours.

1422.1.4.3. Hepzibah Cheney was born 13 Nov 1749 in Boxford (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 5 Dec 1776, Thomas Smith.

1422.1.5. Mary Cheney was born 3 Mar 1722/23 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 22 Mar 1738/39 in Newbury, Amos Hardy, son of Thomas Hardy (1689-1771) and Deborah Wallingford (1701-). His sister marries Mary’s brother Peter.
Mary and Amos had three children (second cousins to us):

1422.1.5.1. Mary Hardy was born 1 Oct 1741 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 28 Oct 1765 in Bradford, Edmund Hardy, son of Edmond Hardy (1699- ) and Ruth Burbank. Edmund was born 7 Jun 1738 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Sep 1800 in Pelham (Hillsborough) New Hampshire. Mary and Edmund might be cousins through the Hardy family, but the relation is unknown.

1422.1.5.3. Amos Hardy was born 16 Aug 1746 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Lydia Stratton.

1422.1.6. Martha Cheney was born 27 Apr 1726 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 22 Aug 1745, Amos Poore.
Martha and Amos had two children (second cousins to us):

1422.1.6.1. Mary Poore was born 20 Jul 1752 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1847 in Warren, New Hampshire. She married on 14 Dec 1772, John Currier. John was born 22 Jun 1748 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Aug 1833 in Brownington, Vermont.

1422.1.6.2. Eliphalet Poore was born 7 Apr 1755 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Apr 1813 in Newbury. He married 9 Jan 1781 in Chester (Rockingham) New Hampshire, Elizabeth Kelly, daughter of John Kelly (1724-1807) and Hannah Hale (1727-1811). Elizabeth was born 10 Aug 1750 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Jul 1830 in Newbury.

1422.1.7. John Cheney was born in 1733 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 16 Jan 1818. He is supposed to have married first, 16 Oct 1766 in Newbury, Susanna Cheney [1422.1.4.2], daughter of John’s brother Peter Cheney and Rose Hardy. I would like to see some further evidence of this, since John is Susanna’s uncle -- such a marriage, though not unheard of, is very unusual.
John married second, 5 Jun 1773, Mary Smith.

1422.1.7.1. Deborah Cheney was born about 1774 probably in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married in 1802, Enoch Mooers.

1422.1.7.3. Moses Cheney was born probably sometime in the late 1770’s or 1780’s, and died 1 Apr 1830.

1422.1.7.4. Enoch Cheney was born probably sometime in the late 1770’s or 1780’s, and died 9 Apr 1843.

1422.1.7.5. Rachel Cheney was born probably sometime in the late 1770’s or 1780’s.

1422.1.7.6. Paul Cheney was born probably sometime in the late 1770’s or 1780’s.

1422.1.7.7. Susanna Cheney was born probably sometime in the late 1770’s or 1780’s. She married 2 Dec 1824, John W. Jewett.

1422.1.8. Sarah Cheney was born 10 Jan 1734/35 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 29 Mar 1759, Moses Smith, son of Moses Smith (1711) and Lydia Tappan (1716-1807). Moses was born 5 Jun 1743 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

1422.5. John Cheney was born 23 May 1705 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 31 Jul 1753 in Georgetown (Essex) Massachusetts. He married three times, and had children from each marriage.

John married first, Sep 1726, Elizabeth Dakin, daughter of Simon Dakin and Elizabeth ___. Elizabeth was born 25 Aug 1703 in Concord (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 13 Jun 1730 in Framingham (Middlesex) Massachusetts.
John and Elizabeth had three children (first cousins to us):

1422.5.1. Tristram Cheney was born 14 Oct 1726 in Weston (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died Dec 1816 in West Concord (Essex) Vermont. He married on 28 Nov 1745 in Sudbury, Massachusetts, Margaret Joyner, daughter of Edward Joyner (1693-1753) and Susan Clapp (1697-1760). Margaret was born about 1728 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts.
Tristram and Margaret had seven children (second cousins to us):

1422.5.1.1. Elizabeth Cheney was born 3 Sep 1746 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Sep 1796 in Harvard (Worcester) Massachusetts. She married 20 Nov 1770 in Ashburnham (Worcester) Massachusetts, Timothy Wood, son of John Wood and Lydia Davis. Timothy was born 29 Jul 1749 in Littleton (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 18 Jul 1801 in Harvard (Worcester) Massachusetts.

1422.5.1.2. John Cheney was born 29 Apr 1749 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts. He married May 1776 in Hillsborough (Hillsborough) New Hampshire, Abigail Corkin.
John and Abigail had five children (John, Abigail, Tristram, Rufus, Roswell) of whom we list one (third cousin to us):

1422.5.1.2.5. Roswell Cheney was born 17 May 1789 in Keene (Cheshire) New Hampshire. He married Abigail Willard, daughter of James Willard. Abigail was born 6 Dec 1793 in St. Johnsbury (Caledonia) Vermont, and died 28 Jun 1860 in Logansport (Cass) Indiana.
Roswell and Abigail had four children (Cornelia, Roswell, James, Cornelia) of whom we list one (fourth cousin to us):

1422.5.1.2.5.3. James Cheney was born 16 Dec 1817 in Sutton (Caledonia) Vermont, and died 13 Dec 1903 in Ft. Wayne (Allen) Indiana. He married Nancy Evans. Nancy was born 21 Feb 1824 in Defiance Co, Ohio, and died 27 Jun 1895 in Ft. Wayne (Allen) Indiana.
James and Nancy had four children (Helen, R.W., Mary, Alice) of whom we list one (fifth cousin to us):

1422.5.1.2.5.3.4. Alice Cheney was born Nov 1852 in Defiance Co, Ohio. She married Charles Stuart Knight. Charles was born 14 Nov 1846 in Columbus (Fairfield) Ohio, and died 14 Aug 1909 in Ft. Wayne (Allen) Indiana.
Alice and Charles had six children, of whom we list one:

1422.5.1.2.5.3.4.3. Elizabeth Knight was born May 1877 in Indiana, and died 16 Jan 1942 in Nevada. She married 3 Apr 1902 in Allen Co, Indiana, Frederick C. Peters. Frederick was born Oct 1875 in Indiana, and died in 1935. They were divorced about 1914, and Elizabeth moved to Los Angeles with the children. Elizabeth died in a plane crash, along with her daughter.
Elizabeth and Frederick had three children, of whom we list one (seventh cousin to us):

1422.5.1.2.5.3.4.3.3. Jane Alice Peters (Carole Lombard) was born 6 Oct 1908 in Ft. Wayne (Allen) Indiana, and died 16 Jan 1942 in Nevada. She married first, 26 Jun 1931, the actor William Powell (1892-1984), but they were divorced in 1933. She married second, 29 Mar 1939 in Kingman (Mojave) Arizona, the actor Clark Gable. Clark was born 1 Feb 1901 in Cadiz (Harrison) Ohio, and died 16 Nov 1960 in Los Angeles, California.
Jane moved to Los Angeles with her mother in 1914, at about 6 years old. She dropped out of school to become an actress. In early 1920’s films she is credited as Jane Peters, but she changed her name to Carole Lombard around 1925. She was in a car accident in 1926 which badly cut her face. At that time it was thought that anesthetics would leave worse scarring, so she underwent plastic surgery with no anesthesia. She was one of the top comedy actresses in the 1930’s.

When the United States entered World War II, Carole traveled with her mother to Indiana to sell War Bonds. They were returning home on 16 Jan 1942, stopping in Las Vegas, Nevada to refuel. The plane went off course after takeoff due to no lights, and crashed into the side of Table Mountain, 20 minutes after takeoff. Carole was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Liberty Ship #2557, SS Carole Lombard, was named after her.
Clark enlisted in the US Army Air Forces after Carole died, serving as a gunner in bombing missions over Europe. Although he remarried, he is buried next to Carole.

1422.5.1.3. William Cheney was born 1 Feb 1750 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 15 Jul 1802 in Alstead (Cheshire) New Hampshire. He married Rebecca ___.

1422.5.1.4. Mary Cheney was born 31 Dec 1751 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts.

1422.5.1.5. Sarah Cheney was born 1 Jan 1754 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts.

1422.5.1.6. Susannah Cheney was born 2 May 1759 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts. She married May 1776 in Hillsborough (Hillsborough) New Hampshire, David Blanchard.

1422.5.1.7. Elias Cheney was born 14 Oct 1760 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died in 1816 in Concord (Essex) Vermont. He married first, about 1780, Lucy Blanchard, daughter of Joshua Blanchard and Sarah Burge. Lucy was born 4 Jun 1760 in Hollis (Hillsborough) New Hampshire, and died about 1798. Elias married second, 6 Jun 1799 in Antrim (Hillsboro) New Hampshire, Deborah Winchester, daughter of Lemuel Winchester (1740 MA - 1841 NH) and Lydia Flint (1743 MA - 1812 MA). Deborah was born 19 Apr 1777 in Amherst (Hillsboro) New Hampshire, and died 30 Jan 1854 in Albany (Orleans) Vermont.

1422.5.2. John Cheney was born 22 Mar 1727/28 in Weston (Middlesex) Massachusetts. He married 11 Dec 1753 in Framingham (Middlesex) Massachusetts, Hannah Eaton [2838.5.5.2.1], daughter of Noah Eaton (1708 MA - 1791) and Hannah Vinton (1708-1795). Hannah was born 4 Nov 1731 in Framingham (Middlesex) Massachusetts.
John and Hannah had four children (both second and fourth cousins to us):

1422.5.2.2. Abigail Cheney was born 21 Dec 1759 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts. She married 2 Jan 1781 in Sudbury, Josiah Stone, son of Moses Stone (1734 MA - 1804 MA) and Hannah Moore (1733 MA - 1810 MA). Josiah was born 1 Apr 1758 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts.

1422.5.2.3. Daniel Cheney was born 21 Dec 1759 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts.

1422.5.2.4. Elias Cheney was born 29 Jul 1765 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts.

1422.5.3. Elizabeth Cheney was born 4 Aug 1729 in Framingham (Middlesex) Massachusetts. She married 1 Jan 1754, Jonas Davis.

John married second, 25 Dec 1730 in Framingham (Middlesex) Massachusetts, Mary Clap (also seen as Mary Clapp), daughter of Noah Clap and Mary Wright. Mary was born about 1705 and died 2 Jan 1744/45 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts.
John and Mary had one child that we know of, there were probably others (first cousin to us):

1422.5.4. Elias Cheney was born 17 May 1734 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died in 1765 in Wiscasset (Lincoln) Maine. He married on 13 Jan 1757 in Maine, Sybil Marson. Sybil was born about 1735 and died 16 Aug 1823.
Elias and Sybil had three children (second cousins to us):

John married third, 15 Nov 1745 in Sudbury (Middlesex) Massachusetts, Keziah Kendall.

1422.5.6. Ralph Cheney was born 4 Oct 1750 in Georgetown (Essex) Massachusetts (or some have Georgetown, Maine), and died 19 Aug 1826 on Salter Island (Sagadahock) Maine. He married twice, and had children from both marriages.
Ralph married first, 3 Jul 1772, Lydia Grover. Lydia was born about 1750 and died in 1785.
Ralph and Lydia had five children (second cousins to us):

Ralph married second, 2 Aug 1785, Ann Jarvis Oliver, daughter of Thomas Oliver and Ann Jarvis.

1422.5.6.12. Sarah Cheney was born 25 Jun 1799 in Maine, and died in 1813 at age 13.

1422.5.7. Nathaniel Cheney was born 2 Apr 1752 in Georgetown (Essex) Massachusetts (some have Georgetown, Maine). He married 16 Aug 1780, Lydia Grover, daughter of Andrew Grover and Mary Coy. Lydia was born about Jan 1750/51, and died in 1785 in Georgetown, Maine.
