Almost all of our information on this family is from secondary website sources; I am presenting what we have found, but cannot say anything about the accuracy of  the information.  

2842.  Samuel Platts was born probably sometime around 1625.  He married

2843.  Sarah ___.  Sarah was born probably sometime around 1625, and died 10 Apr 1681.

Samuel and Sarah probably had several children, but we only know of

2842.1.  Elizabeth Platts [1421] is a direct ancestor and follows immediately below.

1420.  Samuel Brocklebank was born 28 Nov 1653 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 22 Nov 1681 in Rowley,

1421.  Elizabeth Platts.  Elizabeth was born 3 Sep 1653 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

Platt means literally flat. The name Platts is considered to be an old Anglo-Saxon location name, for a family that lived in a flat area.

Samuel was a Deacon, though we aren't sure what religion -- probably Congregational.

Samuel and Elizabeth had six children:

1420.4.  Sarah Brocklebank was born 9 Sep 1688 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 13 Jun 1714. She married 2 Feb 1708/09, Ephraim  Nelson, son of Thomas Nelson and Mary Lunt. Ephraim was born 23 Mar 1681 in Rowley, and died there 28 May 1761. Ephraim also married in 1723, Mary Kilbourne [2816.2.5].

Sarah and Ephraim had two children (first cousins to us):

1420.4.1. Mehitabel Nelson was born 13 Jan 1710 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 15 May 1744 in Rowley. She married Eben Hedden.

1420.1.  Samuel Brocklebank was born about Nov 1682 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about Apr 1714 in Rowley. He married 26 Mar 1706 in Rowley, Sarah Plummer [5694.4.4], daughter of Benjamin Plummer (1656-1724) and Ann Wood (1660->1715). Sarah was born 6 Aug 1686 in Rowley, and died there 17 Dec 1722.

1420.1.2. Mary Brocklebank was born 13 Apr 1707 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1732. She married Samuel Stickney [2838.6.2.5], son of Benjamin Stickney (1673-1756) and Mary Palmer (1674-~1747). Samuel was born in 1708 in Rowley, and died in 1778 in Rowley.

1420.1.3. Martha Brocklebank was born 5 Aug 1708 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 26 Jun 1758 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 24 Mar 1728/29, Jonathan Thurlow, son of Jonathan Thurlow and Mary Merrill. Jonathan was born 29 Aug 1699 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

Martha and Jonathan had seven children (second cousins to us):

1420.1.3.1. Mark Thurlow was born 2 Jan 1740/41 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Jun 1823. He married 2 Apr 1776, Mary Wheeler. Mary was born 12 Jul 1752 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 11 Jun 1837.

Mark and Mary had five children, born between 1785 and 1791. The 9-year gap between their marriage in 1776 and the birth of their first child suggests that Mark probably served in the Revolutionary War.

1420.1.3.2. Abraham Thurlow was born 17 Nov 1729 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

1420.1.3.3. Samuel Thurlow was born 3 Sep 1732 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1735 in Newbury, age 3.

1420.1.3.4. Jonathan Thurlow was born 10 Nov 1734 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 16 Nov 1758 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, Ruth Moors.

1420.1.3.5. Samuel Thurlow was born 24 Jul 1737 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

1420.1.3.6. John Thurlow was born 23 Sep 1739 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 1 Apr 1805 in Portland (Cumberland) Maine. He married on 13 Jun 1761 in Falmouth (Cumberland) Maine, Rebecca Waite.

1420.1.3.7. Sarah Thurlow was born 7 Jul 1745 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.

1420.2.  Hannah Brocklebank was born 26 Aug 1684 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Jun 1732 in Rowley. She married 2 Mar 1705 in Rowley, Joseph Nelson, son of Philip Nelson (1635-1691) and Elizabeth Lowell (1646-1731). Joseph was born 28 Nov 1682 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 8 Feb 1742/43 in Rowley. (Some have him in a second marriage in 1734 to 2838.12.1.1 Lydia Pingry, but this is probably his son Joseph.)

Hannah and Joseph had eleven children (first cousins to us):

1420.2.1. Jeremiah Nelson was born 23 Jun 1707 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 26 Feb 1773 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts. He married on 1 Feb 1732/33 in Rowley, Mary Harriman, daughter of Jonathan Harriman (1657-) and Margaret Ellithorpe. Mary was born 11 Nov 1698 in Rowley. She had previously been married to Jacob Hale, and had one son (Jacob Hale, 3 Apr 1730 - 27 Sep 1730) from that marriage. Two of her brothers also married into our family -- 2832.4.8 Mehitabel Spofford married Nathaniel Harriman, and 5694.4.7 Martha Plummer married Leonard Harriman.

Jeremiah and Mary had three children (second cousins to us):

1420.2.1.1. Hannah Nelson was born 16 Mar 1736/37 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 14 Mar 1755 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, James Pickard .

1420.2.1.2. Jeremiah Nelson was born 28 Apr 1739 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1790 in Alna (Lincoln) Maine. He married 29 Mar 1764 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, his first cousin Mary Nelson [1420.2.7.2]. Jeremiah inherited half his father's estate, and added to it. At one time he owned a large part of Plum Island near Ipswich, now a wildlife refuge.

1420.2.1.3. Jacob Nelson was born 28 Nov 1742 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Oct 1823 in Alna (Lincoln) Maine. He married on 4 Jul 1765, Annabel Harbach, daughter of Thomas Harbach (1698 Eng - 1782 MA) and Annabel Coolidge (1701 MA - 1777 MA). Annabel was born on 3 Jun 1740 in Sutton (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 2 Nov 1849 in Indiana. Jacob inherited half his father's estate. He served in the Revolutionary War (Col McCobb's Regiment, Penobscot Expedition). Jacob and Annabel had seven children, born between 1768 and 1781.

1420.2.2. Joseph Nelson was born 10 Mar 1709 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 6 May 1769 in Rowley. He married 7 Nov 1734, Lydia Pingry [2838.12.1.1], daughter of Aaron Pingry (~1683-1770) and Elizabeth Pearson (1685-1746). Lydia was born 5 Oct 1709 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 8 Mar 1780 in Rowley.

Joseph and Lydia had eight children (both second and third cousin to us):

1420.2.2.1. Lydia Nelson was born 15 Nov 1735 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 3 Feb 1757 in Rowley, Abner Foster.

1420.2.2.2. Elizabeth Nelson was born 11 Aug 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 22 Jul 1760, Jonathan Kilbourne [2816.4.3.3], son of David Kilbourne (1689-1775) and Ruth Fiske. Jonathan was born 17 Nov 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1806 in Lunenburg (Worcester) Massachusetts.

Elizabeth and Jonathan probably had several children, of whom we list one (third cousin to us):

1420.2.2.2.1. David Kilbourne was born 27 Mar 1766 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married his cousin Lucy Pengry [1420.6.8.4], daughter of Asa Pengry and Elizabeth Kneeland. David and Lucy are second cousins once removed.

1420.2.2.3. Aaron Nelson was born 13 Apr 1740 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 19 Mar 1804 in Georgetown (Essex) Massachusetts. He married on 17 Mar 1768 in Marblehead (Essex) Massachusetts, Abigail Williams.

1420.2.2.4. Hannah Nelson was born 14 Dec 1742 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 24 Oct 1765 in Rowley, Daniel Pearson.

1420.2.2.5. Joseph Nelson was born probably around 1740's to 1750's, probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

1420.2.2.8. Stephen Nelson was born probably around 1740's to 1750's, probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

1420.2.3. Moses Nelson was born 15 Mar 1710 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1745. Source stated that Moses died in the French and Indian War, but that didn't start until 1756. Moses more likely served in King George's War (1744-1748), an expansion to North America of the War of the Austrian Succession in which Britain and its colonists were fighting against the Spanish and French.

1420.2.4. Mary Nelson was born 15 Feb 1712 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 31 May 1743. She married 15 Dec 1730, John H. Plummer [2838.2.5.1], son of Benjamin Plummer (1682-1734) and Jane Pearson (1684-1736). John was born 5 Oct 1708 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died after 1749 in Newcastle (Lincoln) Maine.

Mary and John had seven children (both second and third cousin to us):

1420.2.4.1. Bemsley Plummer was born about 1731 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Abigail Wheeler.

1420.2.4.2. John Plummer was born in 1733 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1736, age 3.

1420.2.4.3. Hannah Plummer was born in 1734 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 29 Oct 1736 in Rowley, age 2.

1420.2.4.4. Mary Plummer was born in 1736 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1756.

1420.2.4.5. John Plummer was born in 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 31 May 1814 in Alna (Lincoln) Maine. He married Susanna Longfellow, daughter of Nathan Longfellow (1729-) and Susannah Healey. Susannah is a second cousin twice removed to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who is a fifth cousin to Bill's side [7862.7.1.5.5.3.1].

1420.2.4.6. Daniel Plummer was born about 1739 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

1420.2.4.7. Jane Plummer was born in 1741 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 2 Sep 1762, her cousin Elias Cheney [1422.1.1.1], son of Moses Cheney and Sarah Whiton. Elias was born 20 Feb 1742. Jane and Elias are second cousins, both being descended from 5694.4 Ann Wood and Benjamin Plummer.

1420.2.5. Samuel Nelson was born 10 Apr 1715 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died one month later, 6 May 1715.

1420.2.6. Samuel Nelson was born 14 Apr 1716 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 31 Oct 1742 in Georgetown (Essex) Massachusetts.

1420.2.7. David Nelson was born 24 Jul 1718 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Mary Atwood, daughter of Anthony Atwood and Mary Bugg. David built and operated several sawmills and grist mills.

1420.2.7.2. Mary Nelson was born probably sometime around the 1740's. She married 29 Mar 1764 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, her first cousin Jeremiah Nelson [1420.2.1.2], son of Jeremiah Nelson and Mary Harriman.

1420.2.7.3. Lucy Nelson was born probably sometime around the 1740's.

1420.2.7.4. Anthony Nelson was born probably sometime around the 1740's.

1420.2.7.5. Samuel Nelson was born probably sometime around the 1740's.

1420.2.8. Francis Nelson was born in 1719 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 21 Sep 1777. He married 30 May 1745 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, Mary Pierce. (Bradford  was a separate town until 1850, now is a part of Haverhill.)  Francis served in the French and Indian War in 1759. He also was in the Revolutionary War, a member of the Continental Army in Col Rufus Putnam's Regiment, Mar-Sep 1777, when he died.

1420.2.9. John Nelson was born in 1721 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 27 Aug 1752, Mary Platts (also seen as Mercy Platts).

John and Mary had eleven children (second cousins to us):

1420.2.10. Jonathan Nelson was born 27 Jul 1723 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 18 Jun 1801 in Sutton (Merrimack) New Hampshire. He married first, on 10 Mar 1745 in Rowley, Mary Pease. Mary was born about 1725 and died about 1750. We don't know of any children from this marriage. Jonathan married second, 24 Dec 1752 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, Hannah Cheney. Hannah was born about 1725 and died 14 Jul 1802. Jonathan and Hannah moved to Sutton, New Hampshire at least by 1769, when he is listed as clearing roads. He also appears on a list of Baptist church members in 1774.

1420.2.10.3. Philip Nelson was born 3 Jun 1756 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Sep 1841 in Sutton (Merrimack) New Hampshire. He married on 24 Oct 1776, Hannah Quimby, daughter of Moses Quimby and Judith Bean. Hannah was born 18 Oct 1758, and died 16 Apr 1831 in Sutton.

1420.2.10.4. Hannah Nelson was born probably in the late 1750's or 1760's.

1420.2.10.5. Jonathan Nelson was born probably in the late 1750's or 1760's.

1420.2.11. Philip Nelson was born 21 Nov 1725 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died probably in the late 1750's. He married first, 22 Jun 1749 in Rowley, Mehitabel Dresser. Mehitabel was born about 1725 and died about 1750. Philip married second, in 1751, Abiah Morrill.

Philip served in the French and Indian War, and died in the war.

Philip and Abiah had three children (second cousins to us):

He married 22 Apr 1714, Ruth Spofford [2832.4.5], daughter of Samuel Spofford (1652-1743) and Sarah Burpee (1660-1729). Ruth was born 18 Nov 1687 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Nov 1777 in Rowley. She is also seen listed as Ruth Spafford.

John and Ruth had seven children (both first and second cousins to us):

1420.3.2. John Brocklebank was born 4 Jul 1717 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 1 Jun 1795 in New London (Merrimack) New Hampshire. He married 1 Jun 1738 in Bradford, Massachusetts, Sarah Tenney, daughter of Daniel Tenney (1690-1756) and Priscilla Wood (1687-). Sarah was born on 18 Sep 1720 in Rowley.

1420.3.2.4. Samuel Brocklebank was born 19 Dec 1741 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died after Jun 1795 in New London (Sullivan) New Hampshire. He married 8 Nov 1764, Jane Dickinson, daughter of Samuel Dickinson (1707-1751) and Sarah Bailey (1711-). Jane was born 8 Jul 1744 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1825 in New London (Sullivan) New Hampshire.

1420.3.2.7. James Brocklebank was born 16 Nov 1747 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 22 Sep 1753 in Rowley, age 6.

1420.3.2.12. Molly Brocklebank was born about 1760 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 27 Jul 1840. She married 4 Mar 1776, her first cousin John Adams [1420.3.7.1], son of John Adams and Sarah Brocklebank.

1420.3.2.13. Thomas Brocklebank was born 18 Apr 1761 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 8 Dec 1762 in Rowley, age 1.

1420.3.4. Ruth Brocklebank was born 1 Mar 1720/21 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 7 Oct 1800 in Rowley. She married 16 Mar 1741/42 in Rowley, John Pillsbury, son of Amos Pillsbury (1683-1761) and Elizabeth Stewart (1689-1764). John was born 17 Nov 1723 in Rowley.

Ruth and John had five children (second cousins to us):

1420.3.4.1. Amos Pillsbury was born 25 Mar 1745 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1823. He married 10 Jul 1781 in Rowley, Naomi Burbank.

1420.3.4.2. Mary Pillsbury was born 7 Nov 1746 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 5 Apr 1774, Ebenezer Hopkinson.

1420.3.4.3. John Pillsbury was born 6 Nov 1748 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1800. He married his cousin Judith Dole [1416.3.3.5], daughter of John Dole and Sarah Plummer. Judith was born 9 Aug 1754 in Essex County, Massachusetts. John and Judith are third cousins, both being descended from 2832 Thomas Burpee and Sarah Kelly.

1420.3.4.4. Samuel Pillsbury was born 22 Dec 1752 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in Danbury (Merrimack) New Hampshire. He married 27 Nov 1776, his second cousin Elizabeth Pengry [1420.6.5.1], daughter of John Pengry and Elizabeth Jewett.

1420.3.4.5. Sarah Pillsbury was born 29 Oct 1756 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 26 May 1776, her first cousin Daniel Brocklebank [1420.3.2.6], son of John Brocklebank and Sarah Tenney.

1420.3.5. David Brocklebank was born 4 Mar 1723/24 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Source says he married Sarah Adams [1420.3.7.3], daughter of Sarah Brocklebank and John Adams. However, she is also seen as married to 1420.3.2.11 James Brocklebank, and moreover David is her uncle, so I think it is likely that the supposed marriage is in error.

John was born 12 Apr 1721 in Rowley, and died 28 Apr 1804 in New London (Sullivan) New Hampshire. After Sarah died, John married twice more, and had children from each (listed under John).

Sarah and John had four children (both second and third cousins to us):

1420.3.7.1. John Adams was born 29 Sep 1749 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 15 Mar 1821 in New London (Sullivan) New Hampshire. He married 4 Mar 1776, his first cousin Molly Brocklebank [1420.3.2.12], daughter of John Brocklebank and Sarah Tenney.

1420.3.7.2. Benjamin Adams was born 19 Feb 1751 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Feb 1819 in New London (Sullivan) New Hampshire. He married 7 Dec 1772, his cousin Judith Adams [5690.3.4.1.1], daughter of William Adams and Elizabeth Noyes. Judith was born about 1748 and died in 1823. Benjamin and Judith are both related to us, and are also related to each other, but outside of our lines -- they are second cousins, both being descended from Abraham Adams and Mary Pettingill.

1420.3.7.3. Sarah Adams was born 23 Mar 1753 in New London (Sullivan) New Hampshire, and died sometime after 1804 in New London. She married on 12 Dec 1776, her first cousin James Brocklebank [1420.3.2.11], son of John Brocklebank and Sarah Tenney. Some also have her married to 1420.3.5 David Brocklebank, but that may be in error -- at least we hope it is, as David is her uncle and 30 years older than Sarah.

1420.3.7.4. Lois Adams was born 15 Nov 1754 in New London (Sullivan) New Hampshire, and died sometime before 1804. She married 15 Nov 1774 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, Daniel Perkins.

1420.6.  Elizabeth Brocklebank was born 4 Dec 1694 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 12 Feb 1746/47 in Rowley. She married Nov 1717 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, Job Pengry [5678.2.5.3], son of Aaron Pingry (~1652-1714) and Ann Pickard (1659-1740). Job was born 17 Oct 1688 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Apr 1785 in Rowley. His name is also seen as Pingree or Pingry. They lost three of their children in the 1735-36 scarlet fever epidemic.

1420.6.1.3. Stephen Pengry was born 7 Aug 1752 in Methuen (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 30 Apr 1840 in Norway, Maine. He married 21 Sep 1773, Ruth Hoyt. Ruth was born in 1749 in Methuen (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 21 Oct 1836 in Norway, Maine.

1420.6.2. Moses Pengry was born 7 Nov 1720 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Feb 1801. He married twice, and had children from both marriages. Moses married first, 9 Mar 1747/48, Ann Carleton, daughter of Ebenezer Carleton and Elizabeth Kimball. Ann was born 9 May 1732 in Methuen (Essex) Massachusetts, and died around 1760. If the marriage dates are correct, we probably have a double wedding cermony with Moses' brother Samuel. That in turn suggests that Samuel's wife Elizabeth Carleton is probably Ann's sister.

1420.6.2.3. Elizabeth Pengry was born 3 Feb 1757 in Methuen (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 17 Oct 1780, Dudley Bixby.

1420.6.2.4. John Pengry was born 22 Jan 1759 in Methuen (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 9 Dec 1813 in Nova Scotia, Canada. He married first, on 29 Mar 1792, Persis Bodwell. Persis was born and 1760 and died in 1793. John married second, in 1794, Elizabeth Pickering. Elizabeth was born in 1769 in Newington (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died 6 Dec 1838 in Canning (Nova Scotia) Canada.

John's and Elizabeth's deaths in Canada suggests they may have been Loyalists, but we have found nothing else to support this.

1420.6.2.5. Ebenezer Pengry was born 24 Feb 1754 in Methuen (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 3 Jul 1833 in Littleton, New Hampshire. He married on 4 Nov 1788, Sarah Merrill. Sarah was born 28 Jul 1760 in Methuen (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 18 Feb 1832 in Littleton (Grafton) New Hampshire.

Moses married second, 3 Dec 1767, Hannah Woodbury.

1420.6.9. Clemens Pengry was born 18 Apr 1735 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 31 Aug 1759 at Louisbourg (Cape Breton, Nova Scotia) Canada. His age and date of death, as well as the location at Louisbourg, a fortress on Cape Breton, suggests probable service in the French and Indian War. The British captured Louisbourg from the French in July 1758.

1420.6.10. Elizabeth Pengry was born 8 Nov 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 16 Jan 1746/47, age 9.
