Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer |
||
| These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further. | HOME | |

She married 28 Mar 1722, Jonathan Cressey, son of Mighill Cressey (1661-1740) and Sarah Hidden (1661-1751). Jonathan
was born 11 May 1695 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after 1752. After Sarah died, Jonathan
married Eleanor Bartor and had five more children (Sarah 1724, Michael 1728, Hepsibah 1730, Jonathan 1732, Tamar 1733), half siblings to Mary,
not related to us.
Sarah and Jonathan had probably one child (first cousin to us):
1418.2.1. Mary Cressey {wb} was born about Jan 1722/23 (baptized 13 Jan) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 26 Jan 1723.
1418.2.?. some web sources have a second child, Sarah, born in 1723, but there are only 7 months between Mary’s birth and her mother’s death.
1418.3. Phebe Harris {wa} was born 7 Dec 1690 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married Edward Payson, son of Edward Payson (1657-1732) and Elizabeth Phillips (1665-1724). Edward was born 5 Jun 1694 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

in Rowley. She married 3 Feb 1719 in Rowley, Thomas Burpee [1416.4],

the second child.

1418.10. Hannah Harris {wa} was born 7 Nov 1704 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Apr 1728 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts [a separate town until 1850, Bradford is now a part of Haverhill]. She married about 1725 (intention filed 26 Feb 1725), Stephen Woodman, son of Jonathan Woodman (1674-1744) and Sarah Mighill (1676-1772). Stephen was born 15 Apr 1701 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 9 Feb 1781 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
I had picked up this one child of Hannah from some website, but can no longer find her listed anywhere. I am continuing to list her here for now, but downgraded to speculation and may be deleted in the future:
1418.10.1. Hannah Woodman was born 18 Apr 1728 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1418.1. Joseph Harris {a,wa,wd} was born 22 May 1686 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before Sep 1723 in York (York) Maine (source {wd} gives 1730 for his death, but also gives a conflicting second marriage for his widow). He married Elizabeth Donnell, daughter of Samuel Donnell (1645-1718) and Alice Chadbourne (~1661-1727). Elizabeth was born 26 Mar 1692 in York (York) Maine. She has a second marriage, 10 Sep 1726, to William Burnham.
Joseph and Elizabeth possibly had four children (first cousins to us)
{I have only seen these in one web source. I am listing them here, but there are some problems and I don’t really trust the source, as (a) it is itself unsourced; (b) there are known errors, such as the conflict between Joseph’s death date and the date of Elizabeth’s second marriage; and (c) there is an obvious problem with the length of time between the births of Phebe and Alice/Elizabeth.}
1418.1.1. Phebe Harris {wd} was born 29 Jul 1714 in York (York) Maine.
1418.1.2. Alice Harris {wd} was born 14 Feb 1714/15 in York (York) Maine. If these dates are correct, there were only seven months between the births of Phebe and the twins. I suspect there are transcription errors with the 1714/15 date, possibly was originally 14 Feb 1715/16. Alice married in Aug 1742 in York, Ralph Farnum, son of Ralph Farnum. (The Alice Harris / Ralph Farnum pairing is seen in many websites, but from about 1600.) Ralph died sometime before 1747 and Alice married second, 3 Mar 1747 in York, Thomas Curtis.
1418.1.3. Elizabeth Harris {wd} was born 14 Feb 1714/15 in York (York) Maine. Same date problem as her twin Alice above. Elizabeth married 28 Apr 1737 in York, Thomas Donnell.
1418.1.4. Samuel Harris {wd} was born 24 Oct 1717 in York (York) Maine. He married 26 Nov 1743 in York,
Miriam Sayward, daughter of Joseph Sayward (~1686 MA - 1741 ME) and Mary Webber (~1688
ME - 1759 ME). Miriam was born 7 Mar 1723/24 in York (York) Maine. The Samuel Harris / Miriam Sayward family is seen in numerous
websites, but almost all have Samuel’s parents as unknown.
Samuel and Miriam had four children (second cousins to us):
1418.1.4.1. Joseph Harris was born 4 Dec 1744 in York (York) Maine.

Some say that Stephen married first, 28 Apr 1728 in Boston (Middlesex) Massachusetts, Elizabeth Usher, daughter of John Usher and Elizabeth Allen. Elizabeth was born about 1708.
Stephen and Elizabeth have one child:
1418.8.1. Stephen Harris, born 15 May 1729 in Boston (Middlesex) Massachusetts, married Mary Angier, daughter of Benjamin Angier and Sarah ___.
This scenario then has Elizabeth die about Jun 1729, and Stephen marries with great alacrity, Mary ___.
Stephen and Mary have three children:
1418.8.2. Sarah Harris, Jan 1730
1418.8.3. Hannah Harris, Apr 1732
1418.8.4. Phebe Harris, Feb 1735
This version omits entirely Samuel, the first child of Stephen and Mary. And, the birth date of Stephen Jr. only allows eight months before the birth of Stephen and Mary’s daughter Sarah -- if Elizabeth died in June, that only leaves seven months.
Now, it is possible to force this to fit: we could say that Samuel was Mary’s son by a previous marriage, and that she was pregnant with Sarah by her first husband when she married Stephen, although there is no evidence at all for this.
However, I think that the connection with Elizabeth is probably based on Usher {d} and Wentworth {e}, who did in fact have a marriage between Stephen Harris and Elizabeth Usher -- but, they did not identify him as our Stephen. Neither one gives a birth date or parents for Stephen. Wentworth {e} calls him Stephen Harris of Boston, not Rowley, and further says that Elizabeth outlived him. I therefore think that the Stephen Harris who married Elizabeth is a different person from our Stephen.
The fact that Elizabeth’s father is a Lt Governor of New Hampshire, and her maternal grandfather a Governor, may be motivation for trying to force a fit.
