Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer |
||
| These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further. | HOME | |

NOTABLES:
1416.1.3. Nathaniel Burpe served in the French and Indian War |
1416. Thomas Burkby {a,b,c}, also seen as Thomas Burpe and Thomas Burpee, was born 25 Dec 1663 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died according to some, 24 Jun 1709 in Rowley. I think the death date is probably in error, as his estate was administered in Jan 1716. Thomas is a son of Thomas Burkby [2832] and Sarah Kelly [2833]. He married 3 Dec 1690 in Rowley,
1417. Hester Hopkinson {a,c}, also known as Esther Hopkinson. Hester was born 9 Apr 1667 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 30 Oct 1722 in Rowley. She is a daughter of Jonathan Hopkinson [2834] and Hester Clarke [2835]. She is called Esther in Thomas’ will. In addition to Esther, Thomas’ will names children Jeremiah, Esther, Thomas, Ebenezer, Jonathan, David, Hannah, Nathan, Sarah and Samuel.
Their name is seen as Burpe, Burpee, Burkbee, Burkby. Thomas was most likely named Burkby at birth. They did not start dropping the k until probably about 1700, but he is commonly seen in genealogies as Thomas Burpee. Most of his children appear in documents as Burpe or Burpee (both spellings appearing even within the same documents).
Thomas and Hester had eleven children:
1416.1. Jeremiah Burpe (1691 MA - 1723 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.
1416.2. Sarah Burpe {a} was born 15 Dec 1692 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 13 Dec 1702 in Rowley, age 10.
1416.3. Esther Burpee (b. 1693 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.
1416.4. Thomas Burpee (1695 MA - d. MA) had descendants and is expanded below.
1416.5. Ebenezer Burpee (1697 MA - 1771 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.
1416.6. Jonathan Burpe (1699 MA - 1781 Canada) had descendants and is expanded below.
1416.7. David Burpe {a} was born 27 Nov 1701 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 13 Dec 1728.
1416.8. Hannah Burpee (1703 MA - 1793 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.
1416.9. Nathan Burpee {a} was born 8 Jan 1705 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 22 Jan 1729 in Rowley.
1416.10. Sarah Burpe (b. 1707 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.
1416.11. Samuel Burpe [708] (1709 MA - 1791 MA) and Elizabeth Harris are direct ancestors, separate page.
1416.1. Jeremiah Burpe {a}, also seen as Jeremiah Burpee, was born 27 Oct 1691 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and
died 4 Feb 1722/23 in Rowley. He married 19 May 1714 in Rowley, Rebecca Jewett,
daughter of Joseph Jewett (1654-1735) and Rebecca Law (1655-1729). Rebecca was born 24 Jul 1693 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts,
and died 21 Jan 1777 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts. Her brother and nephew also married into our family (2838 Pearson).
After Jeremiah died, Rebecca married 21 Oct 1729, John Pemberton. There are some doings which are a bit confusing to me. After
Jeremiah’s death, Jonathan Burpe was appointed guardian of the three children Mary, Joseph and Nathaniel. The exact identity
of this Jonathan is not given; I would guess he is probably Jeremiah’s younger brother Jonathan Burpe [1416.6]. We are not
clear on what they meant by guardian -- did he just act as a godfather to the children and look after their inheritance until they
came of age, or did they actually go to live with him? Rebecca filed some sort of additional account having to do with Jeremiah’s
estate in Jan 1736. This may have to do with daughter Mary coming of age and getting married. It may also be connected with the
appointment of another guardian -- in Jan 1736, Rebecca’s brother Aquila Jewett was
appointed guardian to Joseph, now 18, and Nathaniel, 15. Jonathan Burpe (assuming I have guessed correctly that he is in fact 1416.6
Jonathan) is still alive at this point, and Rebecca is also married again, so it is unclear to me why the boys would need a new guardian.
Jeremiah and Rebecca had three children (first cousins to us):
1416.1.1. Mary Burpe {a,wa,wb}, also seen as Mary Burpee, was born 19 Mar 1716/17 in Rowley (Essex)
Massachusetts, and died 21 Jun 1777 in Bradford (now part of Haverhill) (Essex), Massachusetts. She married first,
6 May 1735, Nathan Ames, son of Joseph Ames and Jemima Hoyt. Nathan was born on 29 Oct 1716 in Boxford (Essex) Massachusetts (some have Bradford) and died 16 Jul 1766 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
Mary married second, 22 May 1775, Timothy Hardy, son of Joseph Hardy (1674-1747) and Mary Burbank (1675-1762). Timothy was born 24 Aug 1705 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 27 Jun 1777. He had nine children from a previous marriage, one of whom marries a
daughter of Mary.
Mary and Nathan had perhaps ten children (second cousins to us):
1416.1.1.1. Priscilla Ames {wc} was born 2 Apr 1736 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 7 May 1803. She married her stepbrother Timothy Hardy, son of Timothy Hardy and his first wife. Timothy was born 26 Oct 1736 and died 1 Mar 1815.
(Downgraded) I had picked up these nine children of Mary from some website, but can no longer find them listed. Most of them do appear in Slaughter {wb}, but only the names, no dates, and no sources. I am continuing to list them here for now, but downgraded to speculation. If anyone knows of a source for them, or can show that they don't belong here, I would appreciate hearing of it:
1416.1.1.2. Jeremiah Ames was born 24 Aug 1739 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.1.3. Joseph Ames was born about Mar 1742 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.1.4. Rebecca Ames was born 5 Jan 1743 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.1.5. Nathan Ames was born about May 1746 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1751.
1416.1.1.6. Mary Ames was born 29 Oct 1748 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.1.7. Martha Ames was born probably sometime around 1750 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.1.8. Nathan Ames was born 6 May 1751 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.1.9. Abigail Ames was born 8 Oct 1753 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.1.10. Burpee Ames was born 3 Dec 1758 in Bradford (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.2. Joseph Burpee {a} was born 25 Jul 1719 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died
6 Jan 1776 in Rowley. He was a member of a local militia company during the French and Indian War (1757). Joseph married twice, and had children from both marriages.
Joseph married first, 19 Jun 1740 in Rowley, Johanna Pickard [5694.5.8.4], daughter of Jonathan Pickard and Johanna Jewett.
Johanna (also seen as Joanna Pickard) was born on 16 Jan 1720/21 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 1 Oct 1748 in Rowley.
Joseph and Johanna had four children (both second and third cousins to us):
1416.1.2.1. Joshua Burpee {a} was born about Jun 1741 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 14 Jun 1741), and died in the winter of 1788/89 (his will was proved 3 Feb 1789). He married 13 Apr 1784, his cousin Mehitabel Jewett [2838.10.9.4.1], daughter of Jane Tenney and Amos Jewett and widow of George Abbot. Joshua and Mehitabel are second cousins, both being descended from Joseph Jewett and Rebecca Law, outside our lines. They are also fourth cousins through 5678 John Pickard and Ann Lume, and fourth cousins again through another Jewett line.
1416.1.2.2. Johanna Burpee {a} was born about Aug 1743 (baptized 14 Aug 1743) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 6 Aug 1818 in Rowley. Johanna (also called Hannah Burpe) married on 24 Dec 1767, her cousin Nehemiah Jewett [2838.7.1.1.1], son of Mary Mighill and Jeremiah Jewett. Nehemiah was born 24 Oct 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 14 Dec 1823. Nehemiah and Johanna are fourth cousins, both being descended from Edward Jewett and Mary Taylor. They are also half third cousins, each descending from a marriage of Edward’s son Joseph.
1416.1.2.3. Rebecca Burpee {a,d} was born about Oct 1745 (baptized 27 Oct 1745) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Jun 1816. She married 26 Aug 1776, Maximillian Jewett. Gardner has him as Maximillian Jewett [5678.2.6.9.10], son of William Jewett and Hannah Pickard (1706-1771), who was born 27 Jan 1741 in Littleton (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 16 Oct 1825 in Bloomfield (now part of Skowhegan) (Somerset) Maine. Garfield has him as Maximillian Jewett, son of Jeremiah Jewett and Elizabeth Wood, who was born 23 Feb 1743 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died sometime after 1780 probably in Canaan, Maine.
1416.1.2.4. Mary Burpee {a} was born probably 1748 (baptized 7 Mar 1748) probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She is not mentioned further and is absent from Joseph’s will, so probably died before 1774.
Joseph married second, 17 Oct 1755 in Rowley, his cousin Elizabeth
Payson [2834.3.1.1], daughter of Mary Todd and Elliot Payson. Elizabeth was born on 23 Mar 1723/24
in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died on 5 Aug 1796 in Rowley. Elizabeth and Joseph are second cousins, through
2834 Jonathan Hopkinson and Hester Clarke.
Joseph and Elizabeth had three children (both second and third cousins to us):
1416.1.2.5. Elizabeth Burpee {a} was born probably in the late 1750’s (baptized 9 Oct 1759) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.2.6. Mehitabel Burpee {a} was born probably about 1759 (baptized 28 Oct 1759). It seems odd that these two daughters would be baptized 3 weeks apart. Most likely one of the years is incorrect. It may also be that one of them is placed incorrectly in this family.
1416.1.2.7. Esther Burpee was {a} born probably in the early 1760’s.
1416.1.3. Nathaniel Burpee {a,wd} was born 7 Feb 1721/22 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 25 Dec 1815
in Candia (Rockingham) New Hampshire. Some have him as Jeremiah Burpe, apparently caused by an error in some church records.
Nathaniel married 19 Apr 1749 in Bradford, Massachusetts, Esther Rolf (also seen as Esther Rolfe), daughter of Ezra Rolf and Sarah Jackson. Esther was born
9 Dec 1722 in Bradford (now part of Haverhill) (Essex) Massachusetts, and died on 20 May 1810. Nathaniel
was a tailor in Ipswich, Massachusetts until his marriage, then moved to Haverhill. They moved to Candia, New Hampshire about 1753.
Nathaniel served in the French and Indian War, in Cape Breton.
Nathaniel and Esther had eight children (second cousins to us):
1416.1.3.1. Jeremiah Burpee {a} was born 19 Feb 1748/49. He appears in tax records for Candia, New Hampshire in 1778.
1416.1.3.2. Mehitabel Burpee {a} was born 18 Nov 1750 in Bradford (now part of Haverhill) (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.1.3.3. Nathaniel Burpee {a} was born in Feb 1753 Bradford (now part of Haverhill) (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Dorothy Carrier. They lived on his father's farm in Candia, New Hampshire. Nathaniel served in the Revolutionary War. He appears on Candia tax records from 1778 to 1810.
1416.1.3.4. Nathan Burpee {a} was born probably around 1755. Nathan served in the Revolutionary War, having several enlistments in different companies between 1775 and 1779.
1416.1.3.5. Ezra Burpee {a} was born about 1757, and died at age 80 in 1837.
1416.1.3.6. Sally Burpee {a} was born probably in the late 1750’s.
1416.1.3.7. Esther Burpee {a} was born probably sometime around 1760.
1416.1.3.8. Patty Burpee {a} was born about 1761, and died at age 82 in 1843.
1416.3. Esther Burpee {a}, also seen as Esther Burpe, was born 13 Mar 1693/94 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 24 Jan 1716/17 in Rowley, John Dole, son of Richard Dole and Sarah Greenleaf. John was born 2 Feb 1685 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.
(Downgraded) I had picked up these children of Esther from some website or other, but can no longer find them listed anywhere. I am continuing to list them as possible children here for now, but downgraded to speculation and may be deleted in the future. If anyone has some sources for them, or can show they don't belong here, I would appreciate hearing of it:

John was born 6 Nov 1748 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died about 1800. John and Judith are third cousins, both being descended from 2832 Thomas Burpe and Sarah Kelly.
1416.3.3.6. John Dole was born about 1756 in Essex Co, Massachusetts.
1416.3.4. Jeremiah Dole was born 22 Sep 1727 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 30 Oct 1727 in Newbury, age 1 month.

1416.4. Thomas Burpee {a,c} was born 31 Oct 1695 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died probably in
Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts. He married twice, and had children from both marriages.
Thomas married first, 3 Feb 1719 in Rowley, Mary Harris [1418.7], daughter of Timothy
Harris (1657-1723) and Phebe Pearson (1660-1732). Mary was born 9 Mar 1697/98 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and
died 17 Aug 1721 in Rowley, from childbirth.
Thomas and Mary H. had two children (first cousins to us through both parents):
1416.4.1. Thomas Burpee {a,c,we} was born 25 Nov 1719 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died
31 May 1800 in New London (Merrimack) New Hampshire. He married 19 Oct 1743 (intent published Apr 1743 in Lancaster),

Ann Kilbourne (1680-1751). Ann was born about Oct 1721 (baptized 15 Oct) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
Thomas was a miller, living probably in Rowley before his marriage. They joined a church in Lancaster in 1745, but are back in
Rowley by 1747. Thomas served in a local militia company during the French and Indian War (1757). About 1786 he moved to
New London, New Hampshire, where he lived with his sons Thomas, Asa and Calvin.
Thomas and Ann had seven children (both second and third cousin to us):

1416.4.1.4. Thomas Burpee {a,c,we} was born 24 Feb 1753 (Gardner says in one place that he was
baptized 11 Mar 1753, but on another page states that no record of his birth or baptism have been found) in Rowley (Essex)
Massachusetts, and died 12 Sep 1839 in New London, New Hampshire. He married first,
10 Mar 1774, Joanna Foster. Gardner {a} speculates that she may be Joanna Foster, daughter of John Foster and Mehitabel Burnham,
who was baptized 19 Jun 1748 in Ipswich. Thomas and Joanna had six children, born in Rowley (Sally 1775, m. Ebenezer Shepard;
Abigail 1777-1794; Jeremiah 1779-1843, m. Betsey Blake; Martha, called Patty 1781, m. Henry Achilles; Joanna 1782, m. Edward Chadwick;

1416.4.1.7. Asa Burpee {a,c,we} was born 1 Jul 1760 (baptized 10 Aug 1760) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 15 Oct 1843 in New London, New Hampshire. He married 22 Nov 1781 in Boxford (Essex) Massachusetts, Mary Perley, daughter of Benjamin Perley and Hannah Clark. Mary was born about 1760 and died 27 Jul 1833. Asa was a shoemaker. They moved to New London, New Hampshire about 1786. Asa and Mary had nine children, born in Rowley and New London (Thomas 1782-1848, m Mary Woodman; Rebekah 1784, m William Loverin; Dolly 1787-1835; Perley 1790-1865, m Judith Colby; Delia 1792, m James Pillsbury; Apphia 1795, m Jonathan Everett; Azubah 1797-1856; Sally 1799-1799; and Abial 1800-1842, m Mary Woodbury).

Calvin and Ruth had five children (Stephen 1799, Hiram 1801, Varnum 1808, Heman 1806, Joseph 1809).
1416.4.2. Stephen Burpee {a} was born 2 Aug 1721, stillborn.
Thomas married second, 20 Sep 1722, Mary Kilbourn [1408.4], daughter of Isaac Kilbourne (1659-1713) and
Mary Cheney (1661-). Mary was born on 17 Mar 1696/97 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
Thomas and Mary K. had four children (first cousins to us through both parents):
1416.4.3. Mary Burpee {a,e,wd,wf,wg} was born 14 Oct 1723 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married about 1741,
Amos Rugg, son of Daniel Rugg and Elizabeth Priest. I have seen a number of dates for their marriage and/or intent to marry,
from 29 Apr 1741 to 29 Dec1741. Amos was born 13 Sep 1716 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts (some
have 17 Dec 1716 in Sterling, that may be his baptism), and died in 1787 in Rindge (Chesire) New Hampshire.
Mary and Amos had thirteen children (second cousins to us):
1416.4.3.1. Thomas Rugg {wd,wf} was born 27 Jan 1743 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts.
1416.4.3.2. Amos Rugg {e,wd,wf} was born 6 Jan 1744/45 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 11 Sep 1746, at 20 months.

1416.4.3.4. Mary Rugg {e,wd,wf} was born according to some 8 Sep 1749 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts. Others have 7 May 1750. Perhaps the later date is a baptism; or perhaps two separate people are being confused.
1416.4.3.5. Stephen Rugg {e,wd,wf} was born 30 Oct 1751 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 19 Oct 1756, age 5.
1416.4.3.6. Solomon Rugg {e,wd,wf} was born 17 Mar 1754 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 5 Nov 1756, age 2.

1416.4.3.13. Luther Rugg {e} was born 12 Apr 1770 in Sterling, at that time Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 20 Oct 1863. He served on several scool and town boards and committees. He married 22 Jun 1800, Ruth Jewett, daughter of Amos Jewett (1747-1781) and Sarah Willard. Ruth was born 16 Jan 1776 and died 20 Sep 1864.
1416.4.4. Stephen Burpee {a,wd} was born 17 Mar 1724/25 (baptized 21 Mar). Some have his death as 21 Mar 1725, the same day as his baptism.
1416.4.5. Esther Burpee {a,wd,wg} was born 22 Aug 1726 (baptized 23 Oct) probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married 27 Aug 1745 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, Jacob Smith. Jacob was born about 1725 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts.
1416.4.6. Nathan Burpee {a,f,wd} was born 23 Jul 1730 (baptized 30 Jul) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
Some have his death as 1789, but Gardner says he appears in the 1790 census living in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Nathan
married 14 Mar 1753 in Lancaster Massachusetts, Azubah Sawyer, daughter of Samuel Sawyer (1697-1784) and
Deborah Rugg (1711-1790). Azubah was born 28 Aug 1732 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died
30 Dec 1808. Her sister Mary marries 1408.3.3 Joseph Kilbourne.
Nathan served in the French and Indian War.
Nathan and Azubah had seven children (second cousins to us):

He married first, 1 Jan 1783, Rebecca Gates. Rebecca was born probably sometime around 1755, and died 9 May 1801.{I
originally had from some unattributed web source that she is Rebecca Gates,

would be welcome.} Rebecca died 9 May 1801.

died 11 Nov 1826. He married 25 Apr 1752 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, his cousin Margaret Harriman [2832.4.9.5], daughter
of Nathaniel Harriman (1696-) and Mehitabel Spofford (1698-). Margaret was born 23 Feb 1734/35 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts,
and died 27 Oct 1818. Margaret and Moses are
second cousins, both being descended from 2832 Thomas Burpe and Sarah Kelly.
Moses served in a horse militia during the French and Indian War. They moved to Jaffrey (Cheshire) New Hampshire sometime before 1790.

1416.5.6.2. Ebenezer Burpee {a} was born 30 Jan 1761 (baptized 15 Mar) in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Wesson, daughter of Isaac Wesson and Lucy ___.

1416.5.6.7. Hepsibeth Burpee {a} was born 10 Jul 1768. It doesn't look too good, with Hepsibeth supposedly born on 10 Jul, and two other daughters baptized on the 17th of the same month. You can see from the other siblings that this family tended to baptize their children within a few months of birth, so even though there is room between Nathaniel and Hebsibeth for a late 1766 birth and another in mid to late 1767, I don't think they would wait two years to baptize Polly. So, either we have triplets, or a couple of wrong dates, or one or two of these three daughters does not belong in this family.
1416.5.6.8. Sarah Burpee {a} was born probably around Jul 1770 (baptized 5 Aug).
1416.5.6.9. Elizabeth Burpee {a} was born 29 Jan 1773 (baptized 4 Apr) in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts. She married 20 Oct 1801 in Jaffrey (Cheshire) New Hampshire, Samuel Sargent.
1416.5.7. David Burpee {a,b} was born about Aug 1736 (baptized 29 Aug 1736) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married 24 May 1759 in Ipswich, his cousin Sarah Barker [2816.2.3.2.1], daughter of James
Barker (1712-) and Elizabeth Kilbourne (1713-). Sarah was born 29 Sep 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. This placement is
not certain, some have her married to David’s cousin 1416.6.4 David Burpe below. David and Sarah are third cousins, both being descended
from 5670 Richard Clarke.
David served in the militia sometime around 1755. He was also a Minuteman during the Revolutionary War, and was a member of a company that
marched on the Lexington alarm, 19 Apr 1775. In Apr 1783 he sold his Rowley property and moved to Washington, New Hampshire.
David and Sarah had four children (both second and fourth cousins to us):
1416.5.7.1. Nathaniel Burpee {a} was born about 1760 (baptized 16 Mar 1760) probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He was a musician in a Massachusetts militia unit. Nathaniel appears on U.S. pension rolls in 1833.
1416.5.7.2. Miriam Burpee {a,b} was born about 1761 (baptized 28 Jun 1761) probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and
died 13 Dec 1817 in Henniker (Merrimac) New Hampshire.
She married 28 Oct 1787, her second cousin George Lesslie [1416.6.6.1], son of George Lesslie and Hepzibah Burpee.
1416.5.7.3. Elizabeth Burpee {a} was born about 1764 (baptized 22 Jul 1764) probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.5.7.4. Ebenezer Burpee {a} was born about 1770 (baptized 28 Oct 1770) probably in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.6. Jonathan Burpe {a,b}, also seen as Jonathan Burpee or Jonathan Burkbee, was born 7 Dec 1699 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and
died 8 Apr 1781 in Maugerville (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. He was a farmer, carpenter and deacon. Jonathan married three times, and had children from the first two marriages.
Jonathan married first, 26 Dec 1722 in Rowley, Hannah Platts, daughter
of Isaac Platts (1673-1711) and Elizabeth Jewett (1678-1762). Hannah was born on 19 Sep 1705 in Rowley (Essex)
Massachusetts (baptized 23 Sep), and died 24 Jan 1728/29 in Rowley.
Jonathan and Hannah had three children (first cousins to us):
1416.6.1. Jeremiah Burpe {a,b} was born 19 Oct 1723 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died a week later, 26 Oct 1723.
1416.6.2. Isaac Burpe {a} was born 10 Jul 1725 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 17 Feb 1758
in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. He married on 2 Dec 1746 in Rowley, Elizabeth Dickinson, daughter of John Dickinson
and Susanna Gage. Elizabeth was born 26 Nov 1723. After Isaac died, she married 9 Sep 1771, Thomas Wood.
I am wondering whether his death date might be wrong. Gardner gives the date, and says an inventory of the estate was taken in Nov 1758,
and yet nothing from the estate was given out until 1771 (Elizabeth’s one-third share) and 1773 (the remainder of the estate to the
children). Also, guardians were not appointed for the minor children until 1773. It seems very strange to me that the courts would wait
fifteen years to appoint guardians (most of the children were nearly adults by then) and divide the estate. I am wondering if perhaps
they have confused him with some other Isaac who died in 1758, and this one actually died around 1770.
Isaac and Elizabeth had six children (second cousins to us):
1416.6.2.1. Susannah Burpe {a,wd} was born about Aug 1747 (baptized 5 Sep 1747), and died in Feb 1821. She married Israel Cook. Israel was born probably about 1745 in Lynn (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.6.2.2. Mehitabel Burpe {a,wd} was born 12 Jul 1749 (baptized 23 Jul), and died 30 Nov 1773.
1416.6.2.3. Jonathan Burpe {a,wd} was born 16 Oct 1751 (baptized 20 Oct), and died sometimes after 1816. He married in 1783, Mary ___. They had two children, born in New Brunswick, Canada in the 1780’s. One source gives Jonathan’s birthplace as Oxford, New Hampshire -- I can find no such place, and his parents were born and died in Massachusetts, so this is probably an error.
1416.6.2.4. Salome Burpe {a,wd} was born about Mar 1754 (baptized 24 Mar 1754), and died 30 Aug 1840 in Upper Keswick (York, New Brunswick) Canada. She married in 1776 in New Brunswick, Canada, Israel Estey, son of Richard Estey and Hannah Hazen. Israel was born 9 Aug 1753 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died on 12 Oct 1831.
1416.6.2.5. Ruth Burpe {a,wd} was born 14 Apr 1756 (baptized 25 Apr 1756), and died in 1816.
1416.6.2.6. Isaac Burpe {a,wd} was born about Mar 1758 (baptized 2 Apr 1758). He married about 1780 (intention
published 22 Oct 1779) in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Lydia Lummus. They were living in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1790.
Isaac served in the Revolutionary War, in the 17th Regiment, Army of the United Colonies in 1775, and later in the 3rd
Essex County Regiment.
1416.6.3. Jeremiah Burpe {a,b} was born 21 May 1726 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 11 Jul 1767 in
Maugerville (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. He married 23 May 1751 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, Mary Saunders (also seen as Mary
Sanders), daughter of Edward Saunders and Elizabeth Gage. Mary was born 20 Apr 1726 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and
died 18 Oct 1771 in Maugerville (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. They lived outside of Rowley, in a parish which bordered both Rowley and
Ipswich, so their children are shown as baptized in Ipswich. They moved to New Brunswick around 1764 with Jeremiah’s father.
Some have the move as 1763, but he and his father are shown as selling some land in Rowley in Apr 1764. Jeremiah was a member of a Rowley
militia company during the French and Indian War, for which he received a veterans land grant in New Brunswick. They settled in Maugerville,
Nova Scotia at that time, later New Brunswick. Rita and I lived just down the road in Fredericton for several years, but we were not doing
genealogy at the time and missed this opportunity to explore them.
Jeremiah and Mary had eight children (second cousins to us):
1416.6.3.1. David Burpe {a,wd} was born 22 Apr 1752 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 26 Apr 1752), and died 31 May 1845 in
Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. He married 1 Jan 1778 in Maugerville (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, Betsey Gallishan,
daughter of Stephen Gallishan and Mary ___. Betsey was born on 26 Sep 1757 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, and
died 10 Sep 1837 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. They were Congregational. David was a magistrate.
David and Betsey had thirteen children born in New Brunswick (Hannah 1778-1844; Jeremiah 1781; Mary 1783, m Thomas Pickard; Stephen 1784-1874;
David, see below; Betsy 1788, m Nathan Smith; John 1790; Hepzibah 1792, m David Pickard; Lydia 1792-1836, m Enoch Palmer; another Jeremiah 1794;
another John 1797-1884, m Hannah Savage; Rebecca 1800-1831; and William, see below) among whom we list two (third cousins to us):
1416.6.3.1.5. David Burpe {i,wd} was born 22 Jul 1786 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and
died 14 Feb 1830 in New Brunswick, Canada. He married 21 Oct 1813 in Sunbury Co (New Brunswick) Canada, his cousin Sarah
E. Coburn [1416.6.5.1.1], daughter of Moses Coburn and Hannah Barker. Sarah was born in 1795 in New Brunswick, Canada, and died
in 1875 in New Brunswick. Sarah and David are second cousins, both being descended from marriages of 1416.6 Jonathan Burpee.
David and Sarah had seven children (Phoebe, see below; David, see below; Eliza 1824-1901, m Henry Bridges; Mary, see below;
Moses 1822-1847; Stephen 1820-1894, m Elizabeth Bridges; and Thomas 1829-1909, m Henrietta Barker), of whom we list
three (fourth cousins to us):
1416.6.3.1.5.1. Phoebe Elizabeth Burpee {wd} was born 15 Apr 1815 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died in 1902 in Sheffield. She married 9 Aug 1838 in Sunbury County, her cousin George Burpee [1416.6.3.6.9], son of Jeremiah Burpee and Betsy Stickney. George and Phoebe are first cousins once removed, both descending from 1416.6.3 Jeremiah Burpee and Mary Saunders.
1416.6.3.1.5.2. David Burpee {wd} was born in 1827 in New Brunswick, Canada, and died in 1882. He married
5 Jun 1855 in New Brunswick, Canada, Ann Catherine Atlee (called Kate Atlee), daughter of William Lemuel Atlee and Ann
Elizabeth Hoff. They moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
David and Ann probably had several children, of whom we list one (fifth cousin to us):
1416.6.3.1.5.2.1. Washington Atlee Burpee {wd} was born 5 May 1858 in New Brunswick, Canada, and died 26 Nov 1915 at Doylestown (Bucks) Pennsylvania. He moved to Pennsylvania with his parents, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1878. Atlee’s hobby was breeding poultry. He started selling chickens by mail order in 1876, then opened a retail store in Philadelphia. He began selling corn seed as feed for the chickens, and eventually expanded to vegetable seeds. In 1878 he founded W. Atlee Burpe and Company, a mail-order seed catalog company.
1416.6.3.1.5.4. Mary P. Burpee was born 15 Aug 1818 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died 22 Feb 1855 in Sheffield. She married 24 Sep 1840 in Sheffield, her cousin Benjamin Jewett [1416.10.6.9.4], son of Ezekiel Jewett and Hannah Barker. Benjamin and Mary are second cousins once removed.
1416.6.3.1.12. William Burpee {wd} was born 22 May 1802 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died 17 Mar 1863 in New Brunswick. He married 15 Jul 1828 in Sheffield, his cousin Mehitabel Burpee [1416.6.3.6.7], daughter of Jeremiah Burpee and Betsy Stickney. Mehitabel and William are first cousins, both grandchildren of 1416.6.3 Jeremiah Burpee and Mary Saunders.
1416.6.3.2. Lydia Burpee {a,h,wd}, also seen as Lydia Burpe, was born 15 Sep 1753 {h} in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Gardner also has her as child #2, baptized 23 Sep 1753, which is consistent with this. Jewett has her as child #4, born 15 Sep 1758. Lydia married first, 10 Mar 1774in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, Nathaniel Barker, son of Jacob Barker and Mary Spofford. Nathaniel was born 21 Nov 1750 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in 1785. They had eight children (Jeremiah 1775, Mary 1777, Nathaniel, Frederick, James, Asa, Sophia, and Huldah). Lydia married second, James Dingy.
1416.6.3.3. Edward Burpee {a,h,wd}, also seen as Edward Burpe, was born 2 Jun 1756 in Rowley (Essex)
Massachusetts (baptized 6 Jun 1756), and died 28 Mar 1840
in Sunbury Co (New Brunswick) Canada. He married 5 Jul 1781, Hannah Gallop, daughter of Nathaniel Gallop and Hannah Parent.
Hannah was born 22 Jun 1760, and
died 15 Sep 1847 in Burton (New Brunswick) Canada. They had ten children, born in New Brunswick (Jonathan 1783-1826, m 1810
Elizabeth Bell; Hannah 1786-1798; Edward 1788-1842, m 1812 Deborah Bell; Benjamin 1790-1818, m 1813 Mary Wheeler; Moses 1792-1855,
m1 1821 Julia Clayton, m2 1827 Margaret Barker; Nathaniel, see below; Daniel 1796-1829, m 1819 Maria Staples;
Zebulon 1796-1828, m 1817 Lydia Bartlett;
Thomas 1796-1823; and Elizabeth 1800-1848, m 1817 Stephen Cheney) [children from {e}, but Note: there is a conflict between twins
Daniel and Zebulon, supposed to be born 31 Mar 1796, and Thomas, supposed to be born 21 Feb 1796; we are well beyond the ambiguous double-year
period, so can't blame that; either a date is wrong, or one or more of these children is misplaced]. Edward was part of a group
who tried to get Nova Scotia to join in the American rebellion against Britain.
We list one child who married back into our family (third cousin to us):
1416.6.3.3.6. Nathaniel Burpee {wd} was born 14 Jun 1794 in Sheffield (Sunbury) New Brunswick, Canada, and died 12 Aug 1822 in Sheffield. He married 29 Apr 1819 in Sheffield, his cousin Mary Burpee [1416.6.3.8.7], daughter of Joseph Burpee and Abigail Gallishan. Nathaniel and Mary are first cousins, both grandchildren of 1416.6.3 Jeremiah Burpee and Mary Saunders.
1416.6.3.4. Hepzibah Burpee {a,h,wd}, also seen as Hepzibah Burpe, was born 10 Aug 1757 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 14 Aug 1757). She married first, John Pickard, son of Moses Pickard and Jane Saunders. John was born in 1754 and died about 1777. Hepzibah married second, after 1777, Moses Wood.
1416.6.3.5. Esther Burpee {a,h,wd} (also seen as Hester Burpee or Esther Burpe) was born 3 May 1759 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 6 May 1759). She married Jesse Christy. Jesse was born 1 Aug 1755 in New Hampshire.
1416.6.3.6. Jeremiah Burpee {a,h,wd}, also seen as Jeremiah Burpe, was born 10 Sep 1760 (baptized 28 Sep 1760)
in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 17 May 1847 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. Jewett has his birth
date as 19 Sep 1759, but this clearly conflicts with Esther’s birth four months earlier. Jeremiah married in 1790 in
Maugerville (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, Elizabeth Stickney, daughter of Isaac Stickney and Elizabeth Barker.
Gardner has her as Elizabeth (Barker) Stickney; that could be from her mother’s maiden name, or perhaps she is a widow of ___ Barker.
Elizabeth (called Betsey Stickney) was born 13 Apr 1773 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 3 Aug 1868 in
Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. They had eleven children, born in New Brunswick (Mary 1792-1872, m 1813 Charles Harrison;
Isaac, see below; Samuel 1797-1853, m 1822 Hannah Stickney; Elizabeth 1798-1834, m 1822 Whitehead Barker;
Ann 1802-1844; Jeremiah 1804-1826; Mehitabel, see below; Sophronia 1808, m 1838 Henry Coperwaite; George, see below;
Jane 1814-1859, m 1832 Charles Upton; and Charles 1817-1909, m1 1848 Mary Perley, m2 1853 Charlotte Perley, m3 1871 Elizabeth Morrow).
We list three children who married back into the family (third cousins to us):
1416.6.3.6.2. Isaac Burpee {wd} was born 10 Dec 1794 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died 8 Apr 1870 in Saint John (Saint John, New Brunswick) Canada. He married 19 Oct 1820 in Sheffield, his cousin Phoebe Coburn [1416.6.5.1.2], daughter of Moses Coburn and Hannah Barker. Isaac and Phoebe are second cousins, both being descended from marriages of 1416.6 Jonathan Burpee.
1416.6.3.6.7. Mehitabel Burpee {wd} was born 15 Sep 1806 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died 8 Feb 1864 in Sheffield. She married 15 Jul 1828 in Sheffield, her cousin William Burpee [1416.6.3.1.12], son of David Burpee and Betsy Gallishan. Mehitabel and William are first cousins, both grandchildren of 1416.6.3 Jeremiah Burpee and Mary Saunders.
1416.6.3.6.9. George Burpee {wd} was born 12 Aug 1811 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died 7 Aug 1855 in Sheffield. He married 9 Aug 1838 in Sunbury County, his cousin Phoebe Burpee [1416.6.3.1.5.1], daughter of David Burpee and Sarah Coburn. George and Phoebe are first cousins once removed, both descending from 1416.6.3 Jeremiah Burpee and Mary Saunders.
1416.6.3.7. Thomas Burpe {a,b,h,wd} was born 11 Apr 1763 (baptized 17 Apr 1763) in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 23 Mar 1862 in Brighton (Carlton, New Brunswick) Canada. Jewett has his birth date as 18 Apr 1763, which is not consistent with the baptism date. Thomas married 13 Jan 1789 (Jewett has 1788) in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, Esther Gallop, daughter of Nathaniel Gallop and Hannah Parent. Esther was born 27 Mar 1766 in Onslow (Nova Scotia) Canada, and died about 1826. They had seven children, born in New Brunswick (Nathaniel 1789; Enoch 1791, m 1818 Elizabeth Estabrooks; Salome 1794-1794; Sarah 1801-1844, m 1824 Elijah Estabrooks; Adeline 1804-1885, m 1825 Jacob Estabrooks; David 1808-1841, m 1831 Elizabeth Spurr; and Richard 1810-1853, m 1845 Laleah Johnstone). Where most of the branches gradually change to Burpee, some famlies in this branch retained the Burpe spelling down to the present day.
1416.6.3.8. Joseph Burpe {a,wd} was born about Sep 1765 (baptized 20 Sep 1765) in Maugerville (Sunbury, New Brunswick)
Canada, and died 10 Oct 1830 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. He married 1 Dec 1789 in Maugerville, Abigail
Gallishan. Abigail was born 25 Oct 1768, and died 11 Oct 1830 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada.
Joseph and Abigail had eleven children (Ruth 1790, m 1817 Isaac Clarke; Samuel 1792-1842, m 1813 Eleanor Stuart;
Sarah 1794-1852, m 1817 Charles Stewart; Ebenezer 1795-1871, m 1819 Mehitabel Taylor; Thomas 1797-1818;
Joseph 1799-1881, m 1830 Hannah Cleveland; Mary, see below; James 1804-1874, m 1828 Elizabeth Stickney;
Letitiah 1806-1877, m 1829 Charles Appleby; Caroline 1809, m 1831 Thomas Barker; and Stephen 1811-1892, m 1843 Frances Hammond).
We list one child who marries back into the family (third cousin to us):
1416.6.3.8.7. Mary Gallishan Burpee {wd} was born 12 Oct 1801 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died in Feb 1887 in Sheffield. She married first, 29 Apr 1819 in Sheffield, her cousin Nathaniel Burpee [1416.6.3.3.6], son of Edward Burpee and Hannah Gallop. Nathaniel and Mary are first cousins, both grandchildren of 1416.6.3 Jeremiah Burpee and Mary Saunders. Nathaniel died in 1822, and Mary married second, 31 Mar 1824 in Sheffield, Thomas Perley. Mary married third, 6 Jan 1845, James Harrison.
Jonathan married second, 4 Feb 1729/30 in Rowley, Mehitabel Jewett, daughter
of Thomas Jewett and Hannah Story (also seen as Hannah Swan, from a previous marriage to Richard Swan). Mehitabel was born 30 Mar 1698/99 in
Boxford (Essex) Massachusetts, and died Jul 1777 in Maugerville (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada.
Jonathan was a member of a Rowley militia company during the French and Indian War.
Jonathan and Mehitabel moved to New Brunswick sometime around 1764. The Treaty of Paris ending the French and
Indian War in Feb 1763 gave Nova Scotia to Britain, so some New England colonists moved there at this time. I have seen the move
stated as 1763, but Jonathan and his son son Jeremiah are shown on a deed selling some land in Rowley in Apr 1764. They moved to
Maugerville, New Brunswick (still Nova Scotia at that time), where Jonathan received a land grant as a veteran of the French and
Indian War. They were accompanied by their son Jeremiah and his family (or perhaps we might say, being in their 60’s, that
they accompanied Jeremiah), and daughter Hannah and her family. Some of the children of son Isaac also ended up in New Brunswick,
and may have gone with this group.
Jonathan and Mehitabel had four children (first cousins to us):
1416.6.4. David Burpe {a,wd} was born 26 Mar 1731 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died probably in New Brunswick, Canada. Some sources have him married to his cousin Sarah Barker [2816.2.3.2.1], daughter of James Barker (1712-) and Elizabeth Kilbourne (1713-); others, which we follow, have Sarah married to David’s cousin 1416.5.7 David Burpe. David was a county sheriff and was the first school teacher within New Brunswick.
1416.6.5. Hannah Burpee {a,i,wd}, also seen as Hannah Burpe, was born 11 Feb 1734/35 in Rowley (Essex)
Massachusetts (baptized 15 Feb), and died in 1781 in
Maugerville (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. She married 31 Dec 1767 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, Moses Coburn, son of
Moses Colburn (1702-1742) and Deborah Wright (1703-). Moses was born 7 Jun 1735 in Dracut (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and
died 27 Apr 1800 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada. He had one son (Stephen 1763) from a previous marriage to Elizabeth Peabody.
Hannah and Moses had four children (second cousins to us):
1416.6.5.1. Moses Coburn {i,wd} was born 12 Nov 1768
in New Brunswick, Canada, and died 12 Aug 1842. He married 30 Oct 1794, Hannah Barker, daughter of Thomas Barker.
Hannah was born 4 Jul 1771 in New Brunswick, and died 29 Oct 1828. Moses and Hannah had seven children (Sarah, see below;
Phoebe, see below; Mary 1800-1855, m 1821 Benjamin Barker; Moses 1801; Thomas 1805-1829; Elizabeth 1808-1846, m 1828 Thomas Harrison,
and Hannah 1812-1875, m 1837 G.A. Perley).
We list two children who married back into the family (third cousins to us):
1416.6.5.1.1. Sarah E. Coburn {i} was born 23 Dec 1795 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died 2 Nov 1875. She married 21 Oct 1813, her cousin David Burpee [1416.6.3.1.5], son of David Burpee and Betsey Gallishan. They had seven children, listed under David. Sarah and David are second cousins, both being descended from marriages of 1416.6 Jonathan Burpee.
1416.6.5.1.2. Phoebe Elizabeth Coburn {i,wd} was born 20 Sep 1797 in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, and died 11 Apr 1870. She married 19 Oct 1820 in Sheffield, her cousin Isaac Burpee [1416.6.3.6.2], son of Jeremiah Burpee and Betsy Stickney. Isaac and Phoebe are second cousins, both being descended from marriages of 1416.6 Jonathan Burpee.
1416.6.5.2. David Coburn {i,wd} was born 23 Feb 1772 {i}, or 18 Jun 1774 {wd} in New Brunswick, Canada. It is possible that both dates are correct, if the first David died young and they then named another David.
1416.6.5.3. Hannah Coburn {wd} was born 17 Dec 1775 in New Brunswick, Canada.
1416.6.5.4. Jonathan Coburn {i,wd} was born 21 Sep 1779 in New Brunswick, Canada, died by drowning in Sheffield (Sunbury, New Brunswick) Canada, no date given.
1416.6.6. Hepzibah Burpe {a,j,wd,wi} was born 31 Mar 1738 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts (baptized 2 Apr), and died 11 Apr 1814 in
Washington (Sullivan) New Hampshire. She married 26 Oct 1756 in Rowley, George Lesslie (also seen as Leslie George), son of
James Lesslie and Margaret Sheerar. George was born 25 Nov 1727
in Northern Ireland or Scotland, and died 11 Sep 1800 in Washington (Sullivan) New Hampshire.
Hepzibah and George had nine children (second cousins to us):
1416.6.6.1. George Lesslie {j,wi} was born 12 Jan 1758 in Ipswich (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 2 Apr 1813 in Henniker (Merrimac) New Hampshire. He married 28 Oct 1787, his second cousin Miriam Burpee [1416.5.7.2].
1416.6.6.2. David Lesslie {j,wi} was born 17 Dec 1758 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Margaret ___.
1416.6.6.3. James Lesslie {j,wi} was born 10 Mar 1761 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married Feb 1780 in Bradford, Massachusetts, Hannah Blaisdell. They had seven children.
1416.6.6.4. Jonathan Lesslie {j,wi} was born 5 Jun 1763 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 5 Nov 1771, age 8.
1416.6.6.5. William Lesslie {j,wi} was born 4 Aug 1766 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. He married first, 27 Feb 1791, Mary Chase. Mary was born 16 Aug 1773, and died sometime before 1814. William and Mary had three children (Samuel 1791-1845, m Elizabeth Thomas; Elizabeth 1793; and George 1796-1819). William married second, Sarah ___. William and Sarah had eight children (William 1814; Mary 1816; James 1817; another Mary; George 1820; Sarah 1822; Margaret 1823; and Catherine 1824).
1416.6.6.6. Hepzibah Lesslie {j,wi} was born 19 Mar 1770 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Apr 1864. She married Isaac French.
1416.6.6.7. Joseph Lesslie {j,wi} was born 28 Feb 1774 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Apr 1852 in Cornish, New Hampshire. He married Rebecca Farrington.
1416.6.6.8. Mehitabel Lesslie {j,wi} was born 5 Sep 1778 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. She married John Pressey.
1416.6.6.9. Elizabeth Lesslie {j,wi} was born 27 May 1782 in Washington (Sullivan) New Hampshire.
1416.6.7. Moses Burpe {a} was born about 1740 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts. Gardner includes Moses as a possible child because he is listed in some Stickney genealogy, but has him as questionable.
Jonathan married third, in 1777 in Maugerville, Mary Brown, widow of Francis Peabody. They had no children.
1416.8. Hannah Burpe {a,wj} was born 15 Dec 1703 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and
died Jul 1793 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts. She married on 25 Dec 1728 in Newbury, John Plummer
[5638.1.4.5], son of Ephraim Plummer (1655-1715) and Hannah Jaques (~1660-1731).
Hannah and John had eight children (both first and third cousins to us):

1416.8.2. Hannah Plummer {wj} was born 28 Sep 1731 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 19 Nov 1817 in Newbury. She married 14 Apr 1757 in Newbury, Nicholas Pettengill. Nicholas was born about 1730 and died 8 Jul 1802 in Newbury. His name is probably a variant spelling of Pettingell, and he may be related to several others of that name who married into our family.
1416.8.3. Mehitabel Plummer {wj} was born 13 Jan 1733 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died in Boscawen (Merrimack) New Hampshire. She married 15 Sep 1774 in Newbury, Samuel Muzzey. Samuel died in Boscawen.

in Newbury. He married 3 Nov 1767, his cousin Ruth Dole [2840.6.4.7], daughter of
Richard Dole and Sarah Emery. Ruth was born 30 Nov 1738 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Aug 1805 in
Newbury. Ruth and Thomas are second cousins, both descending from Henry Jaques and Anne Knight,
outside our lines.
Thomas and Ruth had five children (both second and third cousins to us):
1416.8.4.1. John Plummer {wj} was born 29 Aug 1769 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 24 Jun 1811 in Newbury. He married 20 Dec 1792 in Newbury, Nancy Bailey.

1416.8.5. Ephraim Plummer {wj} was born 9 Aug 1737 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts.
1416.8.6. Jeremiah Plummer {wj} was born 28 Feb 1741 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and
died 30 Apr 1795 in Newbury. He married 22 Feb 1770 in Newbury, Hannah Pearson. Hannah was born 13 Sep 1745
in Newbury, and died 14 May 1816 in Newbury. Jeremiah was a shipbuilder.
Jeremiah and Hannah had six children (second cousins to us):
1416.8.6.1. Hannah Plummer {wj} was born 25 Nov 1770 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 28 Oct 1848. She married 6 Oct 1802 in Newbury, Amos Stickney [2844.8.1.4.1], son of Amos Stickney (1735-1813) and Susannah Pettingell (1740-1786). Amos was born 21 Jun 1771.
1416.8.6.2. Judith Plummer {wj} was born 25 Jul 1773 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 20 Aug 1831 in Newbury. She married 29 Nov 1797, her cousin Paul Plummer [2832.4.9.3.2.1], son of Paul Plummer (1746-1831) and Hannah Woodbridge. Judith and Paul are third cousins once removed, both being descended from 2832 Thomas Burpe and Sarah Kelly. They are also fourth cousins once removed, through 5638 Francis Plummer and Ruth.
