Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

1296. Michael Mor Dougherty was born about 1690 in Laggan Valley (Donegal) Ireland, and died in 1761 in Augusta Co, Virginia. He is a son of Liam O’Dougherty [2592] and Sila O’Cleary [2593]. He was born simply as Michael Dougherty; the “Mor” means Senior and was added after the birth of his son Michael. He married 1712 in County Donegal, Ireland,
1297. Catherine Rodgers. Catherine was born about 1690 in Ireland.

Catherine is the earliest and only member of Rodgers in our family. The origin of our Rodgers line is uncertain. It is very common throughout England, Ireland and Scotland. In England it is a patronymic meaning “son of Rodger”, and was brought in by the Normans. Irish families may also share this origin, but some Rodgers in Ireland are actually an anglicized version from Gaelic MacRuaidhri. Since we know nothing of Catherine’s parentage, we cannot guess where this line comes from.

Michael came to America in 1727 with his three sons. There is no mention of Catherine, and we don’t know whether she came also, or if she had died in Ireland. Their religion is probably Catholic. They came here with some Patterson and Caldwell families, with whom they continued to associate in America. The Caldwells were Scots-Irish Presbyterians, and had been the Daugherty’s landlords since the 1608 rebellion. But England at this time was persecuting all non-Anglicans, so Presbyterians as well as Catholics were coming to America.
They landed in Delaware, and settled first in Pennsylvania. Michael was a storekeeper in Chester County in 1735. They moved on to Augusta Co, Virginia in Jan 1738, again with the Caldwell and Patterson group. They settled in an area of Augusta County which would eventually become Rockbridge County.

Michael and Catherine had three children:
