Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Moses Vail and Phebe Platt

NOTABLES:

744. Moses Vail had Colonial War Service
744.6. Micah Vail served in the Revolutionary War
744.6.9. Phebe Vail married into the Beahm family

744. Moses Vail was born about 1685 in Huntington (Suffolk) New York, and died Jan 1749/50 in Huntington. He is a son of Joseph Vail [1488] and Esther Smith [1489]. Moses married about 1716 in New York,

745. Phebe Platt. Phebe was born about 1685 (some have 1701), and died sometime after 1765 in Danby (Rutland) Vermont. She is a daughter of John Platt [1490] and Phebe Vail [1491].

Moses was born on Long Island. Both of his parents died before he was 14, and he probably lived with relatives in Queens County. He served in a militia company under Captain Dickinson in 1715. One source says he “performed Colonial War service”, not sure what this refers to -- probably Queen Anne’s War, which ended in 1713. He was a farmer and weaver, and owned at least one slave: a female, Charity. His will was made in August 1749, leaving to Phebe the house, the slave, and a horse. The farm was divided between Phebe and their sons Platt (which seems a bit odd if the birth dates of children are correct, as Platt is the second youngest) and Moses. Joseph was given a horse and five pounds (about $1000 today). Oldest son John was given the weaving business, Israel and Micah each received a horse, Mary got a cow, and some furniture to Phebe. The remainder of the estate was to be sold and divided among Israel, Micah, Phebe (the daughter) and Isaac.

Some sources have Phebe’s parents as 5960 Richard Platt and Mary Wood. These are actually her great-grandparents and died 15 years before she was born.

After Moses died, Phebe married on 2 Apr 1751 John Lewis, and moved to Vermont. Phebe died in an accident when she was thrown out of a horse carriage.

The Revolutionary War seems to have split the family, with at least two sons serving in the American army, and at least one Loyalist daughter.

They moved to Dutchess County New York after they were married. In 1765, they joined with four other families and made the first settlement in Danby Township in what would become Vermont, living at first in one-room cabins with bark roofs. They received their land from New Hampshire. The same land was claimed by both New Hampshire and New York, and both colonies sold grants to settlers for the same spots. The King settled the dispute in 1764, giving New York control of the area. New York then tried to force the New Hampshire settlers, including Micah, either to leave, or pay again for their claim. The New Hampshire settlers refused to do either, and gathered together under Ethan Allen. Known as the Green Mountain Boys, they fought against New York settlers and militia and worked toward making Vermont a separate colony.
Micah served in several town offices, including Selectman and the Committee of Safety. The Danby Town Meetings were held at his house. He was Captain of the local militia. He was the Danby representative at the Dorset Convention in 1776 in which they declared Vermont to be a free and separate state.
During the Revolutionary War, the Green Mountain Boys were reformed under Ethan Allen as a military force. Micah was one of the Captains elected by the men.

Micah and Mary died on the same day, of measles. Family tradition says they were poisoned by a Loyalist doctor treating them. Their gravestone says

“Sacred to the Memory of Micah Vail and Mary his consort: who both departed this Life,
June 8, AD 1777 Aged 48 and 46 years - Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.
Friends, leave this stone and look above the skies. The dust lies here but Virtue never dies”
