Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Samuel Burpee and Elizabeth Harris

NOTABLES:

708. Samuel Burpee served during King George’s War
708.1.1. Mary Burpee married into Bill’s side of the family

708. Samuel Burpee {a} was born 17 Mar 1708/09 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 26 Oct 1791 in Sterling (Worcester) Massachusetts. He is a son of Thomas Burpee [1416] and Hester Hopkinson [1417]. Samuel married on 26 Mar 1730 in Rowley,

709. Elizabeth Harris {a}. Elizabeth was born 28 Dec 1701 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 27 Feb 1793 in Sterling (Worcester) Massachusetts. She is a daughter of Timothy Harris [1418] and Phebe Pearson [1419].

Samuel was a carpenter and housebuilder. They moved to Lancaster, Massachusetts about 1745; the name of the town was changed to Sterling in 1781.
Samuel is listed as a corporal in a militia company in July 1748, during King George’s War. Of their eight children, we know of descendants for only two. At least three died as children, and #2 Hannah died at age 24. Two daughters, #4 Elizabeth and #8 Phebe, we know nothing about.

Samuel and Elizabeth had eight children:

708.1. Nathan Burpee {a} was born 17 Apr 1731 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 30 Sep 1756 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts. He married 24 Jan 1754, Azubah Osgood, daughter of David Osgood and Eunice Carter. Azubah was born 19 Oct 1730, and died 16 Sep 1756. Nathan’s gravestone says “This man, wife and child in 14 days did die his house left desolate Being ye whole Family” {a}. This family may easily be confused with 1416.4.6 Nathan Burpee, who also married an Azubah, and who lived in Lancaster at the same time.
Nathan and Azubah had one child (first cousin to us):

708.1.1. Elijah Burpee {a} was born 10 Jun 1756 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts (baptized 13 Jun), and died 20 Sep 1756.

708.2. Hannah Burpee {a} was born 27 Jul 1732 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts.

708.3. Samuel Burpee [354] (1734 MA - 1791 MA) and Martha Brocklebank are direct ancestors, separate page.

708.4. Elizabeth Burpee {a} was born 20 Feb 1736/37 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts.

708.5. Stephen Burpee {a} was born 1 Dec 1739.

708.6. Elijah Burpee {a} was born about Feb 1742 (baptized 7 Mar 1741/42) in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1744.

708.7. Elijah Burpee {a} was born 28 Feb 1744 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 17 Nov 1750 in Lancaster, age 6.

708.8. Phebe Burpee {a} was born 11 May 1745 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts.

I am currently going back and adding sources to all the pages. Have not gotten to this one yet, but I will eventually
