Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

James Crawford and Jane Hutchinson

NOTABLES: 690. James Crawford served in the Revolutionary War

690. James Crawford was born about 1730 in Northern Ireland, and died 6 Dec 1812, probably in Tennessee. He married in Northern Ireland,

691. Jane Hutchinson. Jane was born about 1734 in Northern Ireland, and died 2 Mar 1792 in South Carolina or Tennessee. Her parents are unknown, but I have included a page for her siblings.

James is the earliest known ancestor in this line. He is Scots-Irish, and there is a Crawford tartan:

the Crawford tartan

Crawford is a lowland clan from the Clydesdale or Lanarkshire area. Most sources say it comes from a place, Crawford, on the Clydesdale River; the original meaning of Crawford is given variously as “crow ford”, “bloody pass” (from Gaelic cru = blood), “cow ford” or “cattle shelter” (from Gaelic crodh = cow). It is first seen used in post-Norman times.

James may have had several brothers, but there is no agreement among researchers so I have not listed any relatives. He is seen in places as James Crafford. Jane is sometimes seen as Jean Hutchinson or Jennett Hutchinson, while some sources give Jennett as her sister. Jane’s parents are also in dispute. Many Carolina records were destroyed during the Civil War, so there is little hope of adding anything to this family.

James and Jane moved from Northern Ireland to Carolina about 1765.

Jane’s sister Elizabeth is the mother of President Andrew Jackson. Andrew’s father died before he was born, and Elizabeth moved in with James and Jane.
Elizabeth died in 1781, and James and Jane were Andrew’s foster parents from age 14.
According to most sources I have seen, James served as an officer in the Revolutionary War, and took Andrew with him as an aide. These say that James was a Captain in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, under Lt. Colonel Francis Marion, and that James was wounded in a battle in which Andrew Jackson served as an orderly. A few sources say that it was not James, but a Major Robert Crawford, neighbor and possibly brother to James (though this is also disputed) who Andrew accompanied. James was supposed to have received a land grant in Tennessee for Revolutionary War service, and moved there probably around 1790. Some sources, however, show him as dying in South Carolina.

James and Jane are supposed to have had eight children, but the only ones we know of are:

690.1. Mary Crawford [345] (1754 N.Ire. - 1806 TN) and James McBride are direct ancestors, separate page.

690.2. Edward Crawford was born 25 Jun 1770, probably in Waxhaws, South Carolina. He married about 1797, Jane Dunlap. Edward was baptized in the Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church (no state given, probably Kentucky?), July 1831.
Edward and Jane had four children (first cousins to us):

690.2.1. James Dunlap Crawford was born 15 Jan 1798, and died 28 May 1866. He married Mary Denton Gill.

690.2.2. George Dunlap Crawford was born in 1806, and died in 1822, age 16.

690.2.3. Edward Alexander Crawford was born 9 Nov 1808, and died 26 Sep 1832.

690.2.4. David Caldwell Crawford was born in 1811, and died in 1856. The Caldwell name here is interesting, as it implies an earlier connection between the lines.

690.x. I have seen internet references to possible sons James, William, Joseph and George, but no details given.

I am in the process of going back and adding references to all the pages. Obviously I have not got to this one yet....
