| These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further. | HOME | |

354. Samuel Burpee was born 25 Sep 1734 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 26 Oct 1791 in Sterling (Worcester) Massachusetts. He is a son of Samuel Burpee [708] and Elizabeth Harris [709]. Samuel married 10 Jun 1756,
355. Martha Brocklebank. Martha was born 10 May 1737 in Rowley (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 10 Sep 1810 in Sterling (Worcester) Massachusetts. She is a daughter of Francis Brocklebank [710] and Mary Cheney [711]. They were farmers.
A Note on Sterling/Lancaster: people on this page are seen in both Sterling and Lancaster, which are the same place. There is a town of Lancaster in Worcester county today; they formed a second settlement, 4 miles southwest of the main town, about 1720. This was also called Lancaster, and is the place we are referring to for most of the Lancaster people on this page. They broke off and were incorporated as a separate town of Sterling in 1781.

354.3. Elijah Burpee was born 1 Mar 1761 in Sterling (Worcester) Massachusetts (called Lancaster at the time),
and died 17 Jun 1836 in Sterling. He married 27 Nov 1783 in Brookfield (Worcester) Massachusetts, Hannah Waite, daughter of
Nathaniel Waite. Hannah was born May 1761 in Brookfield (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 27 Sep 1845 in Sterling
(Worcester) Massachusetts.
Elijah and Hannah had two children that we know of, there were probably others (first cousins to us):
354.3.1. Samuel Burpee was born 1 Mar 1791 in Templeton (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 11 May 1874
in Beloit (Rock) Wisconsin. He married on 5 Oct 1820 in New Hampshire, Esther Crosby, daughter of Alpheus Crosby and
Elizabeth ___. Esther was born 5 Apr 1791 in Jaffrey (Cheshire) New Hampshire, and died 10 Sep 1855 in Lima (Livingston)
New York.
Samuel was a furniture maker. He is buried in Rockford, Illinois.
Samuel and Esther had one child that we know of, there were probably others (second cousin to us):
354.3.1.1. Alpheus Crosby Burpee was born 10 Aug 1823 in Lima (Livingston) New York, and died Apr 1895 in Rockford, Illinois. He married 3 May 1853 in Riga (Monroe) New York, Harriet Maria Baldwin, daughter of Gordon Baldwin and Harriet Fitch. Alpheus and Harriet had five children.
354.3.2. Nathaniel Wait Burpee was born 11 Nov 1796 in Sterling (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died in Jun 1832, probably in Canada. He married on 12 Mar 1829 in Montreal (Quebec) Canada, Pauline Stevens. Pauline was born about 1800, and died in Apr 1829 in Montreal (Quebec) Canada.
354.8. Martha Burpee was born 26 Dec 1773 in Lancaster (Worcester) Massachusetts (now Sterling),
and died 6 Jun 1847 in Ludlow (Windsor) Vermont. She married in 1793 Leonard Ross, son of Thomas Ross (1736-1818)
and Priscilla Cooper. Leonard was born 18 Oct 1771 in Lancaster
(Worcester) Massachusetts, and died 14 Jun 1851 in Ludlow, Vermont.
Martha and Leonard had two children that we know of,
there were probably others (first cousins to us):
354.8.1. Rena Ross was born 1 Aug 1795 in Ludlow (Windsor) Vermont. She married 28 Apr 1814 in Ludlow
(Windsor) Vermont, her sixth cousin Benjamin C. Warren, son of John Warren (1768-1852) and Lydia Chamberlain. Benjamin
(11390.2.1.1.1.1.1.1) and Rena are both descended from 11390 William Hunt and Elizabeth Best.
Rena and Benjamin had two children that we know of, there may be others (second cousins to us):
354.8.1.1. Elvira Warren was born 24 Sep 1815, and died 23 Jan 1860. She married 12 May 1836, Leonard B. Piper, son of Amos Piper and Polly Martin. Leonard was born 7 Aug 1806 in St. Johnsbury (Caledonia) Vermont, and died 31 Jan 1892.
354.8.1.2. Leonard Ross Warren was born 9 Jun 1825, and died Oct 1903 in Ludlow (Windsor) Vermont.
He married Mary Lucia Keys. Mary was born 2 Feb 1837 in Vermont, and died 23 Oct 1881 in North
Springfield (Windsor) Vermont.
Leonard served in the Civil War, unit and dates unknown at this time.
354.8.2. Surry Ross was born in 1797 in Ludlow (Windsor) Vermont, and died in 1885. He married Anna Smith.
Surry and Anna had one child that we know of, there may be others (second cousin to us):
354.8.2.1. Asahel Ross was born in 1823 and died in 1880. He married Mary Elizabeth Rowell. Mary was born in 1825 and died in 1900.
354.9. Samuel Burpee {ca} was born in 1777 in Massachusetts. Samuel married twice, and had children from both marriages.
Samuel married first, Silence Stanford.
Samuel and Silence had two children that we know of (first cousins to us):
354.9.1. Surry Burpee {ca} was born 22 Oct 1801, and died sometime after 1880.
354.9.2. Jeremiah Burpee {ca} was born about 27 Jul 1805.
Samuel married second, Betsy Haskell.
Samuel and Betsy had one child that we know of (first cousin to us):
354.9.3. Samuel Stanford Burpee {ca} was born probably sometime around 1810 to 1820. He married Mary Ann Cummings. They moved to
Michigan.
Samuel and Mary Ann had one child (second cousin to us):
354.9.3.1. Samuel J. Burpee {ca} was born probably sometime around 1830 to 1840 in Marshall (Calhoun) Michigan. He married Mary Elizabeth Von Clorcon, or Van Blarcon. Samuel and Mary had one known child (Ada 1862).
