Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

James McBride and Mary Crawford

NOTABLES: 344. James McBride served in the Revolutionary War

344. James McBride {a,ca} was born in Aug 1751 in Down County, Ireland and died in 1836 (some have 1823) in Belfast (Marshall) Tennessee. He is a son of John Mcbride [688] (b. 1721) and Jean McGahey [689] (b. 1727). James married about 1774 in North Carolina,

345. Mary Crawford. Mary was born 1754 in Northern Ireland, and died in 1806, probably in Tennessee. She is a daughter of James Crawford [690] and Jane Hutchinson [691].

James is the earliest known member of our McBride branch.

McBride is part of the Scots Clan system, and their tartan looks like this:

the McBride tartan

McBride is a very old Gaelic name, coming originally from Mac Broighde or Mac Bhrighde. It is found in both Ireland and Scotland, so we can’t be certain about where ours originated, although since they seem to be Protestant, I would guess they are probably Scots. McBride nominally means a devotee of St. Brigid, but actually goes back to pre-Christian times. Brighid was originally a Celtic goddess, who was merged into St. Brigid.

[NOTE - There is another James McBride of about the same time period, who married a Mary White and had a son Thomas McBride. Several sources have confused the two and make them one person, showing our James as having married a second time. I believe they are two separate people, and are unrelated as far as I can tell. Ours follow a North Carolina - Tennessee - Missouri track, where the other James McBride family goes Virginia - Ohio - Illinois. Birthdates given for the two sets of children actually overlap, making it unlikely to have one person and two marriages.]

James initially landed in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, but about 1771 or 1772 moved to Guilford County, North Carolina.

Mary is a first cousin to Andrew Jackson, who lived with her family as a child.

Mary was Presbyterian; we don’t know James’ religion, but as their son was originally Baptist, James may have been also.

James served in the Revolutionary War, enlisting toward the end of 1775 in the First North Carolina Regiment. He served in various places mostly in the Carolinas, and was in several battles; details are given in his statement {a}. At one point he was captured by the British, but escaped. Some web sources say he was a Captain. There is nothing in his statement that says this explicitly, but he says several things that might be taken to imply he was an officer in charge of a company. However, it also states in several places that he was serving under Captains, so I think if he was an officer he was more likely a Lieutenant.

James and Mary moved from North Carolina to Tennessee about 1800. James returned to North Carolina in 1806 after Mary died, then moved back to Tennessee in 1812. He was living in Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1832.

James and Mary had only one child that we know of. There may have been others. I have seen another son William listed in one source, but this is also one of the sources that confuses our James with the Virginia James, so I can’t put much credence in it.

344.1. Thomas Crawford McBride [172] (1777 NC - 1857 OR) and Elizabeth Womack are direct ancestors, separate page.

I am currently going back through old pages to add sources; have not got to this one yet. Most of the data on this page are compiled from numerous online sources.
