Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Andrew Kincaid and Mary ___

338. Andrew Kincaid (also spelled Andrew Kinkead) {a,b} was born sometime around 1740, probably in Pennsylvania, and died May 1811 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia. He is a son of Thomas Kincaid [676] and Margaret Lockhart [677]. Andrew married

339. Mary ___ {a}. Nothing is known of her. Some suggest she was Mary Ramsey, based on their daughter calling herself Sarah Ramsey Caldwell in one document.

The spelling of Kincaid or Kinkead is completely optional. They used both spellings themselves, sometimes even within the same document. There is a great amount of confusion over this family, some having Andrew as the son of Robert Kincaid, and many instances confusing Andrew with his son Andrew who married Mary Caldwell. With many Kincaid lines in the same area, and all using the same first names for several generations, it is unlikely that anyone (including me) has everything correct. The majority of information on these families comes from wills, which typically name the children but give no dates.

Andrew and Mary had ten children, dates and order of birth for most of them are unknown:

338.1. Sarah Kincaid [169] {a,b} (1764 VA - 1821 MO) and Kinkead Caldwell are direct ancestors, separate page.

338.2. Andrew Kincaid {a} was born sometime around 1760 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia, and died sometime before 1840 in Missouri. He married sometime around 1780, Mary Caldwell [336.2], daughter of 336 Samuel Caldwell and Ann Kincaid. Mary is a half-sister to Kinkead Caldwell, who married Andrew’s sister Sarah. They probably were married in Virginia. They moved to Missouri, but we don’t know when. We can guess that they probably moved first to Kentucky around 1790 with Mary’s parents, then on to Missouri about 1800. This was a general migration pattern at that time, and all these interrelated families tended to move together.
Andrew and Mary had five children (first cousins to us), order and birth dates unknown:

338.2.1. Samuel Kinkead was born sometime around 1790.

338.2.2. Walter Kinkead was born sometime around 1790.

338.2.3. Mary Ann Kinkead was born sometime around 1790. She married Thomas Sappington.

338.2.4. James Kinkead was born sometime around 1790.

338.2.5. Meeke Kinkead was born sometime around 1790. She married John Hempstead.

338.3. John Kincaid {a} was born sometime around 1770 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia, and died Apr 1842 in Greenbriar Co, Virginia.

338.4. Robert Kincaid {a} was born sometime around 1770 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia.

338.5. James Kincaid {a} was born sometime around 1770 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia, and died Aug 1838 in Greenbriar Co, Virginia.

338.6. Thomas Kincaid {a} was born sometime around 1770 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia.

338.7. Elizabeth Kincaid {a} was born sometime around 1770 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia. She married ___ Miller.

338.8. Ann Kincaid {a} was born sometime around 1770 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia. She married ___ Groten.

338.9. May Kincaid {a} was born sometime around 1770 in Augusta Co (now Greenbriar) Virginia. She married ___ Wyatt.
