Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Samuel Jameson and Jane

NOTABLES:

328.1. Alexander served in the French and Indian War
328.1.1. Thomas Jameson served in the Revolutionary War
328.5. Samuel served in the Revolutionary War

328. Samuel Jameson was born about 1705 in York Co, Pennsylvania, and died 1788 in Woods Gap (Albemarle) Virginia. He is a son of John Jameson [656] and Rachael Opdyke [657]. Samuel married

329. Jane (Craig?). She was born sometimes around 1705, and died 24 Dec 1803 in Albemarle Co, Virginia.

Jane’s surname is unknown. Another website source guesses that her name may be Jane Craig, based on names of her nieces and nephews. I have seen nothing solid to support or refute this. Samuel left home in Pennsylvania and moved to Virginia, probably before 1730. His sister and most brothers also moved to Virginia, but the parents remained in Pennsylvania.

Samuel and Jane originally lived in Goochland County in central Virginia, but settled farther west in Albemarle County around 1740. He filed a patent for land on Moorman’s River in Albemarle County in 1741. He patented another 300 acres on Spring Creek in 1747. They were Presbyterians, and are listed as members of the Ivy Creek Presbyterian Church in 1747, pledging 1 pound per year. They were farmers, living on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They owned several slaves.

Samuel and Jane had five children:

328.1. Alexander Jameson (1731 VA - ) had descendants, and is expanded below.

328.2. Thomas Jameson [164] (1732 VA - 1830 IN) and Jane Dickey are direct ancestors, separate page.

328.3. Mary Jameson was born 26 Dec 1742 in Woods Gap (Albemarle) Virginia.

328.4. John Jarman Jameson was born 21 Feb 1746/47 in Woods Gap (Albemarle) Virginia.

328.5. Samuel Jameson (1753 VA - 1805 VA) had descendants, and is expanded below.

328.1. Alexander Jameson was born 16 Jan 1730/31 in Goochland Co, Virginia. He was married, but the name of his wife is unknown. Alexander served in the Albemarle County Militia during the French and Indian War, 1758. He filed a patent for land along the Mechum River in Albemarle County in 1793.
Alexander and his wife had five children (first cousins to us):

328.1.1. Thomas Jameson was born about 1765 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 6 Sep 1823 in Washington Co, Virginia. He married Rachel McCulloch, daughter of Thomas McCulloch and Isabel Patrick. Rachel was born 1761 in Augusta Co, Virginia. Thomas served in the militia during the Revolutionary War.

328.1.2. William Jameson was born sometime around 1770 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died about 1830 in Bath Co, Kentucky.

328.1.3. Jane Jameson was born sometime around 1770 in Albemarle Co, Virginia. She married ___ McCord.

328.1.4. Hannah Jameson was born about 1770 in Albemarle Co, Virginia. She married 12 Jan 1790 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, Richard Yarley.

328.1.5. Sarah Jameson was born about 1775 in Albemarle Co, Virginia. She married Alexander Craig, possibly a cousin.

328.5. Samuel Jameson was born 13 Jul 1753 in Woods Gap (Albemarle) Virginia, and died 11 Apr 1805 in Albemarle Co, Virginia. He married Feb 1769 in Albemarle County, Margaret Craig, daughter of Alexander Craig and Margaret ___. Margaret is probably a cousin; she was born Jun 1753 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died Apr 1850. Samuel served in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia Line (i.e. regular army).
Samuel and Margaret had eleven children (first cousins to us):

328.5.1. Hannah Jameson was born 25 Apr 1774 in Albemarle Co, Virginia. She married first, 13 Oct 1791 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, William Harris, son of Robert Harris and Mourning Glenn. He was supposed to have been born 15 Mar 1729/30. This may be in error, as it would make him 61 at marriage and 44 years older than Hannah; but they say it was his third marriage, so may be correct. There were no children from this marriage.
Hannah married second, 1813 in Albemarle Co, Daniel Maupin, son of John Maupin and Frances Dabney. Daniel was born 16 Sep 1756 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 1838 in Albemarle County. He also was almost as old as her father, so perhaps she just liked older men. Daniel was a saddler and leather worker.
Hannah and Daniel had three children (second cousins to us):

328.5.1.1. Merrit R. Maupin was born 1814 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 1881 in Albemarle County. He married 1839 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, his first cousin Mary Maupin [328.5.2.2], daughter of William Maupin and Jane Jameson. They are first cousins through both parents, as their fathers are brothers and their mothers are sisters.

328.5.1.2. John W. Maupin was born 1819 in Albemarle Co, Virginia.

328.5.1.3. Sarah T. Maupin was born 1822 in Albemarle Co, Virginia.

328.5.2. Jane Jameson was born 3 Jan 1776 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died sometime before 1850. She married 27 Nov 1802 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, William Maupin, son of John Maupin and Frances Dabney. William was born 15 Nov 1760 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 1844 in Albemarle County.
Jane and William had two children (second cousins to us):

28.5.2.1. Tilman J. Maupin was born 1804 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 1881 in Albemarle Co. He married 7 Jan 1828, Pyrina Brown, daughter of Bernard Brown and Miriam Maupin. Tilman and Pyrina are probably cousins through the Maupins, but the exact relation is unknown.

328.5.2.2. Mary Maupin was born 1815 in Albemarle Co, Virginia. She married 1839 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, her first cousin Merrit R. Maupin [328.5.1.1], son of Daniel Maupin and Hannah Jameson. They are first cousins through both parents, as their fathers are brothers and their mothers are sisters.

328.5.3. Elizabeth Jameson was born 6 Dec 1777 in Albemarle Co Virginia, and died sometime before 1850. She married 23 Dec 1799 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, Wiley Harris, son of James Harris and Betty Shares. Wiley was born 8 May 1779 in Albemarle County. There is no known relationship between Wiley and our main Harris line.

328.5.4. Mary Jameson was born 18 Apr 1780 in Albemarle Co, Virginia. She married 1809 in Albemarle Co, Nehemiah Birkhead.

328.5.5. Catherine Jameson was born 17 Nov 1782 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died in 1876. She married 1806 in Albemarle Co, Nathan Mills.

328.5.6. William Lilburn Jameson was born 9 Oct 1784 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 1844 in Missouri. He married 15 Sep 1814 in Albemarle Co, Rebecca Maupin, daughter of Cornelius Maupin and Mourning Harris, and granddaughter of John Maupin and Frances Dabney. (Rebecca is a niece of William Maupin and Daniel Maupin, who married William’s sisters above. Also, the William Harris who married 328.5.1 Hannah above, is her great-uncle.) Rebecca was born 1793 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 14 Nov 1853 in St. Charles, Missouri. She is said to have ridden horseback from Virginia to Missouri.

328.5.7. John Jameson was born 23 Jan 1787 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died in Bedford Co, Tennessee.

328.5.8. Thomas Wharry Jameson was born 17 Jan 1789 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 28 Jan 1804 in Albemarle Co.

328.5.9. Samuel Jameson was born 17 Mar 1791 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 29 Nov 1871 in Albemarle Co. He married first, about 1845 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, Rebecca Craig, daughter of Robert Craig and Sarah ___. She is probably a cousin, but the exact relation is unknown. Rebecca was born 1790 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died 20 Aug 1855 in Albemarle Co.
Samuel then married 20 Dec 1855 in Albemarle Co, Lucy Martin. Lucy was born 1836 in Virginia.

328.5.10. Alexander Jameson was born 20 Nov 1793 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died sometime before 1850. He married Frances Ann Overstreet.

328.5.11. Robert Jameson was born 2 Jul 1776 in Albemarle Co, Virginia.
