Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Johannes Michael Kuchenheim and Maria Agenest Marquart

NOTABLES: 184. Johannes M. Kuchenheim served in the Revolutionary War

184. Johannes Michael Kuchenheim was born 2 Jul 1757 (some have Oct 1758) in Athens, New York, and died in 1840 in New York (some have 6 Nov 1840, others have Apr 1835). He is also seen as John Gugenheim and John Cookingham. He married

185. Maria Agenest Marquart. Maria was born probably about 1760.

The names Kuchenheim and Marquart are both German, but no origins could be found. Kuchenheim means literally “cooking home” or “cake home”. There is a city of Kuchenheim in western Germany, so the name may indicate someone who came from there. Family legend claims the Cookingham branch is Dutch, but I believe that comes from the Vail side.

At least one source has Johannes married to Gertrude Emig. Since we have no death date for Maria, there could be a second marriage.

John served in the Revolutionary War, in the 6th New York Regiment; his name was recorded as John Gugenheim, from Dutchess County. John changed his name from Kuchenheim to the more English-sounding Cookingham about this same time. This might have been because the British use of Hessian mercenaries made German-sounding names unpopular, or he may just have wanted to blend in. They were Lutheran.

John and Maria had two or three children that we know of, there are probably others:

184.1. John Peter Cookingham [92] (1780 NY) and Hannah Vail are direct ancestors, separate page.

184.2. George Cookingham was born about 1791 in New York. He was living in Rensselaer County, New York in the 1810 census, and was living with his nephew [92.1] Michael in New London, Ohio in the 1860 census.

184.3(?). There is a Catharina Kuchenheim/Cookingham, born about 1790 in New York, married John P. Weatherwax. I believe she may be a daughter, but have no solid connection.
