These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.		HOME

Henry Harris and Annie Byrd

166. Henry Harris {a} was born 16 Jun 1742 in Orange Co, Virginia, and died 25 Jan 1835 in Madison Co, Kentucky. He married about 1760 in Virginia,

167. Anne Byrd {a}, called Annie Byrd. Annie was born 15 Apr 1740 in Orange Co, Virginia, and died 16 Feb 1816 in Madison Co, Kentucky.

Harris is a common name throughout England and Wales. It derives from the Normans, and is the same as Harrison, meaning son of Harry or Henry. Many families took this name in honor of one of the Kings Henry. There are many unrelated Harris lines in this country; in fact Rita’s family has a second Harris line, unrelated as far as we can tell to this one. I was unable to find much on the origins of Byrd -- it appears in several counties in Ireland, as well as throughout England. One source says it is of Irish origin, another says Norman - in both cases translated from an earlier name, either Irish or French, which actually meant bird.

Henry served in the Revolutionary War, as a private from Virginia. His Revolutionary Pension Certificate (Kentucky, # 6548) states that he was residing in Orange County, and volunteered for the militia in 1776. He served six months in a campaign against the Cherokee Indians. He was apparently discharged after his six months service. Sometime around 1780 the family moved to Henry County. He volunteered for the militia again in early 1781 (or perhaps he had always been enrolled, and was activated at this time), this time serving in a three-month campaign against loyalist militias. Later in 1781 he volunteered (or was activated again) for three months service in Captain Ballinger’s Company, and served in the campaign against Cornwallis around Jamestown and Yorktown.

166.1. Jesse Harris was born 7 Feb 1761 in Orange Co, Virginia, and died 6 Sep 1818.

166.3. Elizabeth Harris [83] (1768 VA - 1843 MO) and John Jameson are direct ancestors, separate page.

166.4. Martha Patsy Harris (1770 VA - 1842 MO) had descendants and is expanded below.

166.6. Rhoda Harris was born 9 Mar 1774 in Orange Co, Virginia. She married in 1792, Samuel Kelly.

166.7. Zebulon Harris was born about 1775 in Orange Co, Virginia. He married in 1798, Elizabeth Dillingham

166.2. Winnifred Harris was born 15 Jan 1767 in Orange Co, Virginia, and died Oct 1795, age 28. She married in 1786 in Henry Co, Virginia, Joshua Dillingham, son of William Dillingham (26 Jan 1714 Maryland - about 1787 Virginia) and Elanor Vachel (born about 1720 in Virginia). Joshua was born about 1745 in Maryland, and died in 1821 in Madison, Kentucky. Joshua had first married Sarah Graham (1752-1783); they had six children. After Winnifred died, Joshua married third, 1796 in Kentucky, Mary Ely (b. 1760).

166.2.1. Rhoda Dillingham was born 18 Sep 1788 in Virginia, and died 1 Oct 1857 in Estill, Kentucky. Rhoda married first, 28 Mar 1805 in Kentucky, Solomon Park, son of John Park (b. 1750 in North Carolina) and Jane Covington. Solomon was born in 1776 in Virginia, and died in 1814 in Virginia.
Rhoda and Solomon had four children (second cousins to us):

166.2.1.1. Malinda Park was born 1807 in Virginia. She married Hiram Park, son of Asa Park (1780 NC - 1859 KY) and Susanna Park (b.1780 NC). Hiram was born 1 Apr 1805 in Kentucky. Malinda and Hiram are second cousins to each other through Park, but Hiram is not directly related to us. His parents were also first cousins. They are all descended from Solomon’s grandfather, John Park (1722 VA - ).

166.2.1.2. Mariah Park was born 22 Jan 1810 in Virginia, and died 17 Apr 1888 in Kentucky. She married William H. Boian, son of James Boian and Zeryiah ___. William was born in 1805 in Virginia, and died in 1893 in Kentucky.

166.2.1.3. Winifred Park was born 15 Feb 1813 in Virginia, and died 26 May 1857 in Kentucky. She married 11 Dec 1832 in Estill Co, Kentucky, Turner Park, son of Ebenezer Park (1776 NC - 1860 KY) and Katura Turner. Turner was born in 1811, and died in 1850 in Kentucky. Winifred and Turner are second cousins to each other, but Turner is not directly related to us. He is descended from the same John Park (1722) mentioned above.

166.2.1.4. Solomon D. Park was born in 1814 in Virginia. He married 3 Sep 1829 in Kentucky, Eliza Jarman.

Rhoda married second, 1815 in Virginia, Ebenezer Wilson, son of Joseph Wilson (1765-1849) and Lydia Dodd (1772-1860). Ebenezer was born in 1793 in Loudoun, Virginia, and died 30 Mar 1876 in Estill Co, Kentucky.
Rhoda and Ebenezer had five children (second cousins to us):

166.2.1.5. Lydia M. Wilson was born in 1815 in Virginia, and died in 1880 in Missouri. She married 11 Oct 1832 in Estill Co, Kentucky, William H. Wagers, son of John Wagers and Patience Logston. He was born in 1812 in Kentucky, and died in 1880 in Missouri. William and Lydia had eight children.

166.2.1.6. Angeline Wilson was born in 1817 in Kentucky. She married 11 Oct 1838 in Estill Co, Kentucky, Milton Benton, son of James Benton. Milton was born in 1815 in Kentucky. His brother married Angeline’s sister Delina.

166.2.1.7. Delina Wilson was born in 1818 in Kentucky. She married 27 Sep 1856 in Estill Co, Kentucky, Joseph Benton, son of James Benton. Joseph was born in 1817 in Kentucky. His brother married Delina’s sister Angeline.

166.2.1.8. William D. Wilson was born 4 May 1820 in Kentucky, and died 12 Dec 1888 in Estill Co, Kentucky. He married first, 13 Feb 1845 in Estill Co, Kentucky, Mariam Quinn, the daughter of Abner W. Quinn (1793 VA - 1867 KY) and Phoebe Nancy White (1803 KY - ). Mariam was born 31 Mar 1824 in Estill Co, Kentucky, and died 12 Jun 1872 in Estill County. William and Mariam had seven children.
William married second, 1878 in Estill Co, Kentucky, Arvina Durbin. Arvina was born in 1839. They had no children.

166.2.1.9. John Wilson was born 14 May 1822 in Madison Co, Kentucky, and died 24 May 1896 in Estill Co, Kentucky. He married 24 Jun 1846 in Kentucky, Sarah A. Bowman. They had six children.
John served in the Civil War. He was a Captain in Company A and Company C, 8th Kentucky Infantry (Union). He was apparently something of a local hero, and is mentioned in local histories as being at the Battle of Lookout Mountain. I have not done any research on him yet and cannot confirm this.

166.2.2. Henry Harris Dillingham was born 7 Jul 1791 in Henry Co, Virginia, and died 7 Mar 1852 in Estill Co, Kentucky. He married 24 Sep 1812 in Estill Co, Kentucky, Charity Park, the daughter of John Park (1773 NC - 1828 KY) and Mary Peeler (1775 NC - d. KY). Charity was born 22 Dec 1793, and died 5 May 1831 in Estill Co, Kentucky. She is descended from John Park (1722 VA - ) and is a cousin to the several Parks who married into our family, above.
Henry and Charity had nine children (second cousins to us):

166.2.2.1. John Park Dillingham was born 25 Jul 1813 in Kentucky, and died 4 Feb 1861 in Kentucky. He married 22 Sep 1840 in Estill Co, Kentucky, Amanda Grubbs, daughter of James Grubbs (1790 - 1839) and Polly Oldham. Amanda was born about 1816.

166.2.2.4. William Dillingham was born 28 Feb 1819 in Kentucky, and died 13 Aug 1844, probably in Kentucky.

166.2.2.5. Joshua Dillingham was born 25 May 1821 in Kentucky, and died 15 Nov 1841, probably in Kentucky.

166.2.2.8. Solomon Dillingham was born 13 Mar 1826 in Kentucky, and died 7 Jul 1829 in Kentucky, age 3.

166.2.3. Lucinda Dillingham was born in 1792 in Henry Co, Virginia. She married 9 Jun 1818 in Kentucky, Thomas Walker (born 1790).

166.2.5. Winifred Dillingham was born10 Sep 1795 in Virginia or Kentucky, and died 19 Dec 1854 in Madison Co, Kentucky. She married 14 Dec 1809 in Madison Co, Kentucky, Eli Park, son of Ebenezer Park (1747 NC - 1839 KY) and Tabitha Mills (1752 NC - 1826 KY). Eli was born 10 Jul 1787 in North Carolina, and died 6 Dec 1858 in Madison Co, Kentucky. He is a grandson of John Park (1722 VA -) and is a cousin to the many Parks who married into our family, above.
Winifred and Eli had three children (second cousins to us):

166.2.5.1. Joshua D. Park was born in 1814 in Kentucky. He married 3 Sep 1834 in Kentucky, Mary Ann Taylor. Mary Ann was born in 1816. Joshua and Mary Ann had nine children.

166.2.5.2. Tabitha Park was born 11 Oct 1831 in Kentucky, and died 9 Oct 1926 in Kentucky.

166.4. Martha Patsy Harris was born 23 May 1770 in Orange Co, Virginia, and died in 1842 in Franklin Co, Missouri. She married about 1790 in Virginia, Samuel Dent, son of Thomas Dent (b. ~1715 MD). Samuel was born in 1761 in Maryland, and died 10 Apr 1835 in Franklin Co, Missouri. Samuel served in the Charles County Militia (Maryland) during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Virginia about 1786. Martha and Samuel moved to Madison Co, Kentucky in 1795, and to Franklin Co, Missouri in 1818.
Martha and Samuel had seven children (first cousins to us):

166.4.1. Winifred Ann Dent was born in 1792 in Franklin Co, Virginia, and died in Franklin Co, Missouri. She married 10 Aug 1809 in Madison Co, Kentucky, Jesse Parks.

166.4.2. Bailey Dent was born 5 Dec 1794 in Franklin Co, Virginia, and died sometime after 1870 in Randolph Co, Missouri. He married 13 Apr 1815 in Madison Co, Kentucky, Rebecca Harris. (Her parents unknown. Some sources have James Harris and Susanna Gass, but this is incorrect, as that Rebecca was unmarried in Tennessee as late as 1836. Others have John Harris.) Rebecca died 9 Feb 1851 in Monroe Co, Missouri. Bailey and Rebecca moved to Missouri in 1818 along with his parents. The birth places of their children suggest that they moved around several times in Missouri (some of these apparent moves might be due to breaking up large counties into smaller ones).
Bailey and Rebecca had seven children (second cousins to us):

166.4.2.1. Ann Eliza Dent was born 2 Feb 1816 in Madison Co, Kentucky. She married 1 Mar 1833 in Franklin Co, Missouri, Richard Skinner.

166.4.2.2. Martha Dent was born 15 Jan 1819 in Howard Co, Missouri. She married 1 Apr 1838 in Monroe Co, Missouri, Fountain Swinney.

166.4.2.4. John Harris Dent was born 8 Sep 1825 in Franklin Co, Missouri. He married 4 Jan 1855 in Monroe Co, Missouri, Susan Frances Dulaney.

166.4.2.5. Mary Jane Dent was born 15 May 1828 in Franklin Co, Missouri, and died 22 Apr 1830 in Franklin Co, age 2.

166.4.2.6. Samuel Dent was born 28 Aug 1832 in Franklin Co, Missouri, and died 28 May 1906 in Hickory Co, Missouri. He married 27 Mar 1855 in Monroe Co, Missouri, Elizabeth Brown. They had 3 children (Joseph, William and Mary).

166.4.2.7. Francis Marion Dent was born about 1850 in Monroe Co, Missouri. He married in 1878 in Monroe Co, Missouri, Elizabeth Patton.

166.4.3. Olive (Olly) Dent was born in 1798 in Madison Co, Kentucky, and died in Missouri. She married 26 Jan 1817 in Madison Co, Missouri, James Parke.
Olive and James had one child that we know of, there may be others (second cousin to us):

166.4.3.1. James Park was born about 1820 in Missouri. He married Mary J. ____, who was born 1825.

166.4.4. Josiah Dent was born 24 Feb 1800 in Madison Co, Kentucky, and died 9 Nov 1875 in Hickory Co, Missouri. He married 12 Jun 1826 in Franklin Co, Missouri, Mary Jameson [164.6.5.1], daughter of Ephraim Jameson. They resided in Missouri; the birth places of their children show that they moved frequently (though some of the apparent moves could be due to splitting the original large counties into the smaller ones we have now).
Josiah and Mary had nine children (second cousins to us):

166.4.4.1. Harris Dent was born 8 May 1827 in Franklin Co, Missouri, and died 7 Jan 1897 in Lowden (Walla Walla) Washington. He married in 1854 in Oregon, Martha Jane Shepherd. Martha was born 3 Jul 1837 in Illinois, and died 16 Jan 1918 in Des Moines (King) Washington. Harris and Martha had 13 children, all born in Oregon.

166.4.4.2. Celina Dent was born 6 Oct 1829 in Franklin Co, Missouri, and died 15 Apr 1852 in Hickory Co, Missouri.

166.4.4.3. Ephraim Dent was born 12 Dec 1831 in Franklin Co, Missouri, and died 18 Sep 1915 in Hickory Co, Missouri. He married 23 May 1854 in Hickory Co, Missouri, Elizabeth Frances Halbert, daughter of Joel B. Halbert and Tirzah __. Elizabeth was born 20 Aug 1838 in Wilson Co, Tennessee, and died 19 Aug 1928 in Hickory Co, Missouri. Ephraim and Elizabeth had eleven children, all born in Missouri.

166.4.4.4. Martha Ann Dent was born 2 Sep 1834 in Rives Co, Missouri, and died 23 Apr 1847 in Hickory Co, Missouri.

166.4.4.5. Mary Jane Dent was born 9 Jan 1837 in Polk Co, Missouri, and died 4 Sep 1917 in Hickory Co, Missouri. She married about 1855 in Missouri, John A. Morton.

166.4.4.6. Clarissa Dent was born 22 May 1839 in Rives Co, Missouri, and died 8 Jul 1919 in Hickory Co, Missouri. She married 28 Aug 1856 in Hickory Co, Missouri, Shandy W. Holland.

166.4.4.7. Samuel Dent was born 12 Jan 1842 in St. Clair Co, Missouri, and died in 1924 in Gilmer (Upshur) Texas. He married 11 Jul 1860 in Hickory Co, Missouri, Almina Bathsheba Paxton. Almina was born 4 Apr 1842 in Hickory Co, Missouri, and died 2 Jun 1902 in Logan (Cache) Utah. Samuel and Almina had two children, both born in Missouri.

166.4.4.8. Sarah U. Dent was born 10 Jun 1845 in St. Clair Co, Missouri, and died 19 Sep 1845 in St. Clair Co, Missouri.

166.4.4.9. William H. Dent was born 19 Mar 1849 in Hickory Co, Missouri, and died 12 Feb 1899 in Hickory Co, Missouri. He married about 1869 in Missouri, Eliza ____.

166.4.5. Henry Dent was born about 1802 in Madison Co, Kentucky, and died about 1860 in St. Clair Co, Missouri. He married about 1826 in Franklin Co, Missouri, Lavice Williams. She was born about 1809 in Kentucky.

166.4.6. Lavina Dent was born about 1804 in Madison Co, Kentucky, and died in 1873 in Livingston Co, Missouri. She married 5 Apr 1826 in Franklin Co, Missouri, Robert Beatty, son of Henry Beatty. Robert was born 11 Feb 1798 in Madison Co, Kentucky, and died 15 Jul 1849 in Franklin Co, Missouri. They were Presbyterian.

166.4.6.1. James M. Beatty was born in 1828 in Franklin Co, Missouri, and died in 1854 in Missouri. He married Margaret E. McIntyre.

166.4.6.2. Joseph Beatty was born 29 Aug 1832 in Franklin Co, Missouri, and died 22 Feb 1894 in Travis Co, Texas. He married 4 Oct 1861 in Missouri, Hortense Jennifer Maxwell. She was called Jennie.

166.4.6.3. Bailey D. Beatty was born in 1834 in Franklin Co, Missouri, and died in 1863 in Monroe Co, Missouri.

166.4.6.4. William W. Beatty was born May 1843 in Missouri. He married first, 16 Jan 1868 in Monroe Co, Missouri, Florence Millicent Ellis. She was called Millie. William and Millie had three children. William married second, Mary Bradshaw. William and Mary had three children.

166.4.7. Malinda Dent was born about 1810 in Madison Co, Kentucky, and died in 1850 in Franklin Co, Missouri. She married in 1829 in Franklin Co, Missouri, Dyson Johnson.
Malinda and Dyson had six children (second cousins to us):

166.5. Nancy Harris was born 6 May 1772 in Orange Co, Virginia, and died 23 Oct 1848 in Missouri. She married 29 Aug 1791 in Virginia, Elisha Estes, son of Joel Estes (1741 VA - 1825 MO) and Nancy Ann Harris (1745 VA - 1818 MO). Elisha was born 22 Jun 1771 in St. James Northam, Virginia, and died 3 Aug 1840 in Clay Co, Missouri. As far as we can tell, Nancy Ann Harris is not related to Nancy Harris’ family. Elisha’s father Joel served in the Revolutionary War.

166.5.1. Nancy Estes was born Sep 1792 in Franklin Co, Virginia, and died 3 Aug 1840 in Paradise (Clay) Missouri. She married 21 Oct 1811 in Boonesborough (Madison) Kentucky, William Pleasant Gentry, son of David Gentry (1761 VA - 1813 KY) and Jane Haggard. William was born 19 Feb 1787 in Albemarle Co, Virginia, and died in 1868 in Fishing River (Clinton) Missouri.

166.5.1.7. Mary Gentry was born in 1824. She married 28 Mar 1854 in Clay Co, Missouri, David S. Wade, son of John Wade and Prudence Ellington. David served in the Civil War, in the 35th Missouri Infantry.

166.5.2. Byrd Estes was born 10 Sep 1794 in Franklin Co, Virginia, and died 22 Jul 1870 in Clay Co, Missouri. He married first, Margaret Morris, and married second, Mary Watson.

166.5.4. Wiley Estes was born in 1798 in Madison Co, Kentucky. He married in 1823 in Madison Co, Kentucky, Agnes Blackwell.

166.5.5. Sally Estes was born in 1799 in Madison Co, Kentucky. She married in 1821 in Madison Co, Kentucky, Walden Rogers.
