These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. Joseph Daugherty and Elizabeth Drake

162.Joseph Daugherty {a,b} (also seen as Joseph Doherty or Joseph Dougherty) was born about 1749 (baptized 13 Mar 1749) in Montgomery or Augusta Co, Virginia, and died Jan 1825 in Lee Co, Virginia. He is a son of William Daugherty [324] and Elizabeth ___ [325]. Joseph married three times, the second to our ancestor

The origins of our Drake line is uncertain, as the name has multiple unrelated origins. Some Drakes come from the Devonshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire areas, probably derived from the Drakenage Manor in Warwickshire. Drakes in Yorkshire are thought to derive their name from Old English draege, a place where boats were portaged. Other sources claim it is from Gaelic drach, a path or way, thus meaning a leader. Still others say it is from the word drake, meaning dragon or a duck.

Joseph served in the Revolutionary War, from Virginia. He moved to Lee County around 1790, about the time of his third marriage. He owned four slaves, and gave one to his daughter Rachel in 1823. At one time he owned 7500 acres.

Joseph married first, about 1770 in Virginia, Rachel Jordan. She was born about 1750, and died 1781 in Montgomery Co, Virginia. She is the mother of at least three children. Some sources have her as the mother of 162.4 Rachel, and some include an additional son, James.

162.1.John Daugherty (~ 1770 VA - 1821 VA) had descendants and is expanded below.

162.3.Nathaniel Daugherty (1781 VA - 1853 VA) had descendants and is expanded below.

Joseph married second, about 1781 in Virginia, our ancestor Elizabeth Drake. She had been previously married to William Sayers, who died about 1780. Elizabeth was born in 1740, and died around 1788, possibly as a result of childbirth.

162.4.Rachel Daugherty [81] {a,b} (~1782 VA - >1840 KY) and Aaron Spencer are direct ancestors, separate page. (Some sources {a,b} have her as the daughter of Joseph’s first wife Rachel.)

162.5. Elizabeth Daugherty was born sometime around 1785 in Virginia. She married 15 Aug 1833, Pleasant Craig. He died 1840 in North Carolina.

162.11. Mary (Polly) Daugherty was born sometime around 1800 in Virginia. She married ___ Livesay.

162.1. John Daugherty was born about 1770 in Fincastle Co, Virginia, and died May 1821 in Lee Co, Virginia. He married Catherine Barnett. Catherine died Jul 1828 in Lee Co, Virginia.
John and Catherine had four children (first cousins to us):

162.1.1. Anna Daugherty was born about 1802 in Virginia. She married Lewis Grammer.

162.1.1.2. John W. Grammer was born 21 May 1828 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 3 Dec 1897 in Garfield (Benton) Arkansas.

162.1.2. James Daugherty was born about 1806 in Virginia, and died 1841 in Lee Co, Virginia. He married 18 Mar 1828 in Lee Co, Virginia, Theresa Warren. Theresa was born 14 Dec 1808 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 15 Apr 1897 in Barry Co, Missouri.
James and Theresa had four children (second cousins to us):

162.1.2.1. Mary Elizabeth Daugherty was born 9 Jan 1829 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died in 1904. She married William Joseph Muncy.

162.1.2.2. Mariam Eliza Daugherty was born 22 Apr 1830 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 25 Jun 1902 in Barry Co, Missouri. She married Martin Sims Jayne. Martin was born in 1818, and died in 1892.

162.1.2.3. Matthew Bell Daugherty was born 18 Sep 1831 in Lee Co, Virginia. He married Catherine Doyle.

162.1.4. Barnett Daugherty was born 8 Sep 1810 in Virginia, and died 15 Jul 1885 in Martinsville (Clark) Illinois. He married 22 Jul 1841, Sarah Jane Hix. Sarah was born 1817 in Virginia, and died in Martinsville (Clark) Illinois.

162.1.4.1. Hayden Daugherty was born 27 May 1842 in Martinsville (Clark) Illinois, and died 5 Feb 1913 in Martinsville. He married Martha Low. Martha was born in 1837.

162.1.4.2. John Daugherty was born 1844 in Martinsville (Clark) Illinois, and died 5 Oct 1864. His age and the date of death suggest Civil War, but we have found no records.

162.1.4.3. Barnett Snyder Daugherty was born 30 Oct 1845 in Martinsville (Clark) Illinois, and died 30 May 1926 in Elk City (Beckham) Oklahoma. He married Mary Jane Mariner. Mary was born in 1851, and died in 1916. They had eight children, born 1865 to 1885 in Illinois.

162.1.4.4. James Daugherty was born 28 Dec 1847 in Martinsville (Clark) Illinois, and died 24 Sep 1899.

162.1.4.5. Emeline Daugherty was born 28 Dec 1847 in Martinsville (Clark) Illinois.

162.1.4.6. Sarah A. Daugherty was born 1854 in Martinsville (Clark) Illinois, and died in 1919. She married ___ Spires.

162.2. Nicholas Daugherty was born about 1780 in Virginia. He married Elizabeth Anglen.

162.2.1. Nicholas Daugherty was born 1803 in Lee Co, Virginia. He married Rachel ___. Rachel was born in Lee Co.

162.2.1.3. Daniel Daugherty was born in 1835, and died 21 Mar 1884. He married Emaline Sly. Emaline was born in 1837, and died in 1915.

162.3. Nathaniel Daugherty was born 15 Jan 1781 in Montgomery Co, Virginia, and died 14 Jan 1853 in Lee Co, Virginia. He married in 1800 in Lee Co, Susannah Smith. Susannah was born 3 Oct 1783 in Warren Co, North Carolina, and died 9 Apr 1862 in Lee Co, Virginia.

162.3.2. Henry Daugherty was born 4 Aug 1801 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 11 Oct 1875 in Lee Co. He married 1823 in Lee Co, Abigail Jayne. Abigail was born 1803 in Washington Co, Virginia, and died 27 Oct 1884 in Lee Co, Virginia.

162.3.2.6. Barbara Jean Daugherty was born 4 Sep 1833 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 26 Mar 1908 in Lee Co. She married William Pennington. William was born in 1831, and died in 1915.

162.3.2.7. Henry Wheeler Daugherty was born 1835 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died in infancy, about 1836.

162.3.2.8. Abigail Lucy Daugherty was born 1838 in Lee Co, Virginia. She married George Will Ferguson.

162.3.2.9. William Daugherty was born 1841 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died about 1930. He married Lucy Bailey.

162.3.2.10. Rhoda Lavina Daugherty was born 1845 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died in 1887. She married Franklyn Phillips. Franklyn was born in 1845.

162.3.2.11. Isabella Daugherty was born 2 Mar 1848 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 5 Aug 1875.

Josiah and Elizabeth had three children (second cousins to us):

162.3.9. Noah Daugherty was born 1823 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 24 Aug 1861 in Lee Co. He married in 1859, Bathsheba Edsell. She was born in 1842. Noah’s age and date of death and suggest that he may have been in the Civil War (First Manassas was a month before his death), but we have no records of any service.

162.7.2.7. Margaret Emmeline Daugherty was born 7 Apr 1852 in Illinois, and died 8 Aug 1918.

162.7.2.8. Alice Barbara Daugherty was born 3 Feb 1855 in Illinois, and died 6 Oct 1946 in Rooks Co, Kansas. She married 1874 in Missouri, John Russ.

162.7.2.9. James Harvey Daugherty was born 9 Jul 1857 in Illinois, and died 31 Jan 1859 in Illinois, age 18 months.

162.8. Samuel Daugherty was born about 1792 in Virginia. He married Mary ___. She was called Polly.

He married first, about 1819 in Virginia, Julia ___. Julia died in childbirth about 1845. Robinson married second, about 1847, Sarah Horton. Sarah was born in 1824 in Virginia, and died 6 Dec 1853, also in childbirth.
