Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

John P. Cookingham and Hannah Vail

92. John Peter Cookingham {a,d} was born about 1780 in New York, and died sometime after 1870. He is a son of Johannes Kuchenheim [184] and Maria Marquart [185]. John married about 1803 in New York,

93. Hannah Vail {a,d}. Hannah was born about 1784 in Dutchess Co, New York, and died in 1854. She is a daughter of Israel Vail [186] and Eleanor DeLong [187].

It is uncertain whether John and Hannah left New York. We had always assumed they lived and died there, but one source claims John is buried in New London (Huron) Ohio. I have found no records of him in Ohio, and his grave was not among the rest of the Cookinghams as far as we could tell (although there are some broken markers and some that just say “Mother” or “Father”). They are listed in the 1850 census as living in Italy Township, Yates County, New York.

John and Hannah had ten children. The dates and order of birth of most of them are unknown. They were born probably in New York.

92.1. Michael Cookingham [46] {a,b,d} (1814 NY - 1910 OH) and Betsy Ann Abernathy (1820 MA - 1916 OH) are direct ancestors, separate page.

92.2. Lavinia Cookingham was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York.

92.3. Mary Ann Cookingham was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York.

92.4. Augustus Cookingham was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York. He is listed in the 1850 census, living in Italy Township, Yates County, New York.

92.5. Phebe Cookingham was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York.

92.6. Rachel Cookingham was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York.

92.7. Israel Cookingham was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York.

92.8. Nancy Cookingham {b} was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York. She moved to Louisville, Kentucky in the 1850’s, and died there in Aug 1897.

92.9. Diana Cookingham was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York, and died in Yates County, New York.

92.10. Martin Cookingham was born sometime around 1805 to 1825 in New York, and died in Yates County, New York.
