Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

John Jameson and Elizabeth Harris

NOTABLES: 82. John served in the Revolutionary War

82. John Jameson {b,i} was born 1758 in Georgia, and died 1807 in Madison County, Kentucky. He is a son of son of Thomas Jameson [164] and Jane Dickey [165]. John married about 1785 in Franklin Co, Virginia,

83. Elizabeth Harris {b,i}. Elizabeth was born about 1765, and died 1843 in Franklin Co, Missouri. She is a daughter of Henry Harris [166] and Annie Byrd [167].

They spelled their name both Jameson and Jamison, and I have even seen it as Jamieson in one source; we have always had Jamison for their daughter Nancy. The name of their 7th child, Middleton, is a family name, suggesting that either John or Elizabeth had ancestors of that name. They moved to Kentucky probably late 1790’s. Elizabeth moved to Missouri with several of her children, probably in the 1830’s.

The marriage of John and Elizabeth is not entirely certain. The lineage shown here is what we had from Rosine Spencer Sorenson and Louise Vogel Spencer. Some sources claim this [82] John Jameson married Elizabeth McWilliams, and that it was John’s brother William [164.5] who married this [83] Elizabeth Harris. These are all derived from a 1901 book, which is for the most part correct but does have other known errors. Other sources cite a Henry County Virginia certificate for the marriage of 164.5 William Jameson and Elizabeth McWilliams, and a Madison County Kentucky statement naming Elizabeth Harris as executor for her husband John Jameson’s estate. I prefer the latter two documents over the 1901 book, and am staying with the original line.

John fought in the Revolutionary War, in the Cavalry. He was a captain, Jan 1777; was promoted to major later in 1777, and lieutenant colonel from 1780 to 1781. He fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. After the Revolution they lived in Franklin County Virginia. Sometime around 1800 they moved to Madison County Kentucky, where John received a land grant for his service. In Jan 1784, John signed a petition for the creation of a new state called Franklin -- mostly what is eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina today.

John and Elizabeth had eight children:

82.1. Anna Jameson (c. 1790 VA - 1840 MO) had descendants and is listed below.

82.2. Martha J. Jameson {b} was born probably around 1790 in Virginia, and died probably in Kentucky. She married ___ Moberly, and  they resided in Kentucky.

82.3. Mordicia Jameson {b} was born probably around 1790 in Virginia, and died probably in Kentucky. This looks like a woman’s name, but is very unusual. Perhaps misspelled, could be a male, Mordecai?

82.4. Rhoda J. Jameson {b} was born probably around 1790 in Virginia, and died probably in Missouri. She married in Kentucky, Benjamin Heatherly. They moved to Missouri, probably in the early 1830’s.

82.5. John Jameson {b} was born 1795 in Virginia, and probably died in Kentucky. He married in Kentucky, Elizabeth Kelly [160.3.8], daughter of Jonathan Kelly (1760-1832) and Patience Spencer (1770-<1851). Elizabeth was born 1806 in Harlan County, Kentucky, and died in Owsley County, Kentucky. They are both related to us, but not to each other. Elizabeth is the sister of Anna’s husband Joseph, and a first cousin to Nancy’s husband Abraham Spencer. John and Elizabeth had five children, both first and second cousin to us. Their names are unknown; they were probably born in the 1830’s in Kentucky.

82.6. William Jameson {b} was born probably around 1800 in Virginia or Kentucky, and died about 1835 in Missouri.

82.7. Middleton Jamison {b,k} was born about 1800 in Virginia or Kentucky, and died sometime before 1843 in Missouri. He married 23 Dec 1830 in Madison Co, Kentucky, Frances Hardin. They moved to Missouri in the 1830’s. We have a copy of a document made by Middleton and Abraham Spencer. It is unclear (too many words cannot be read), but is some sort of financial agreement related to Abraham’s intention to marry Nancy. I have seen other references to marriage bonds signed by relatives. I don’t know what those were, but this may be one -- it speaks of a pledge of fifty pounds earnest money, and consequences of not going through with the marriage. They signed it on 11 Aug 1830 (the day before the wedding). It shows Middleton’s mark -- he was unable to write.

82.8. Nancy Jamison [41] (1807 KY - 1882 MO) and Abraham Spencer [40] are direct ancestors, separate page.

82.1. Anna Jameson {b,j} was born probably around 1790 in Virginia, and died about 1840 in Franklin Co, Missouri. She married 4 Jan 1818 in Madison County, Kentucky, Joseph Kelly [160.3.3], the son of Jonathan Kelly (1760-1832) and Patience Spencer (1770-<1851). Joseph was born 1795 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 10 Sep 1856 in Franklin Co, Missouri. They are both related to us, but not to each other. Joseph is the brother of John’s wife Elizabeth, and a first cousin to Nancy’s husband Abraham Spencer.
They moved to Franklin County Missouri in the early 1830’s along with their four young children and several of Anna’s brothers and sisters.
Anna and Joseph had six children, both first and second cousin to us. They are numbered after Anna, the closer line:

82.1.1. Guilford Kelly {b} was born in 1819 in Madison County, Kentucky, and died somtime after 1850 in Franklin County, Missouri. He married 22 Mar 1848 in Franklin County, Missouri, Matilda Decker.

82.1.2. Rebecca Elizabeth Kelly {b} was born 1822 in Madison County, Kentucky. She was called Elizabeth. She married Joseph Fowler.

82.1.3. Mordecai Kelly {b} was born 28 Oct 1825 in Madison County, Kentucky, and died 6 Nov 1869 in Dallas County, Missouri. He was called Morgan. He married 25 Oct 1849 in Franklin County, Missouri, Mary Jane Sawyer. Morgan and Mary had 4 sons and 5 daughters (second cousins to us). Names unknown, born 1850’s and 1860’s.

82.1.4. Martha Kelly {b} was born in 1827 in Madison County, Kentucky. She married 20 Feb 1850 in Franklin County, Missouri, John Wilson Roach.

82.1.5. Josephus Kelly was born in 1835 in Franklin County, Missouri. He married 2 Apr 1857 in Franklin County, Missouri, Louisa Cramer.

82.1.6. Nancy Kelly was born about 1838 in Franklin County, Missouri, and died about 1847 (9 years old) in Missouri.
