Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

80.1.5. Elijah Spencer served in the Civil War
80.4.3. Lafayette Young served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War (died)
80.7.3. Jonathan R. Spencer served in the Civil War

80. Aaron Spencer {a,h,N} was born about 1772 in Montgomery Co, Virginia, and died Jul 1822 in Lee Co, Virginia. He is buried in the Young Cemetery, Dryden (Lee) Virginia. He is a son of Joseph Spencer [160] and Mary ___ [161]. Aaron married about 1801 in Virginia,

81. Rachel Daugherty {a,c,h}. Rachel was born about 1782 in Fincastle County, Virginia, and died sometime after 1840 in Kentucky. She is a daughter of Joseph Daugherty [162] and Elizabeth Drake [163].

Aaron moved to Lee County with his parents in the early 1790’s; Rachel probably did the same. They were farmers. Their religion is given only as Protestant. Several of their children were Baptists, so it is likely that Aaron and Rachel were also.

Aaron’s Last Will and Testament is dated 13 July 1822. All of their children, except for Elizabeth, Isaac and Mary, moved to Kentucky after disposing of Aaron’s property. Rachel appears in the 1840 census in Lee County Virginia; she moved to Kentucky sometime after that and probably lived with one of her children.

Aaron and Rachel had nine children:

80.1. John Spencer (1802 VA - ~1852 MO) had descendants and is expanded below.

80.2. Elijah Spencer (1803 VA -  1854 KY) had descendants and is expanded below.

80.3. Abraham Spencer [40] (1808 VA - 1878 MO) and Nancy Jamison are direct ancestors, separate page.

80.4. Elizabeth Spencer (1810 VA - 1890 VA) had descendants and is expanded below.

80.5. Isaac Spencer {a,h} was born 1813 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 1 Mar 1853 of typhoid fever. He married Minerva ___.
Isaac and Minerva had four children (first cousins to us), order and birth dates unknown:

80.5.1. Winfield Spencer {a}

80.5.2. Rachel J. Spencer {a}, married 8 Jun 1867, William R. Coomer

80.5.3. Joseph C. Spencer {a}

80.5.4. Lafayette Spencer {a}

80.6. Mary Spencer (~1814 VA - ) had descendants and is expanded below.

80.7. Jacob John Spencer (~1815 VA - d. MO) had descendants and is expanded below.

80.8. Rachel Spencer {a,d,h} was born about 1817 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died probably in Carter Co, Kentucky. She married Jeremiah S. Oney. They were living in Carter Co, Kentucky in 1840.

80.9. Aaron Spencer Jr. {a,h,j,k} was born about 1820 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died probably in Missouri. He married 27 Jul 1848 in Sullivan Co, Missouri, Elizabeth Christ. She was born 1829 in Virginia, and died probably in Missouri. They were living in Sullivan Co, Missouri in the 1850 and 1860 census.
Aaron and Elizabeth had one known daughter (first cousin to us):

80.9.1. Sarah J. Spencer was born 1849 in Sullivan Co, Missouri.

80.1. John Spencer {a,b,h,j} was born 1802 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died about 1852 in probably Sullivan Co, Missouri. He married about 1825 in Virginia, Henrietta Harris, the daughter of Charles Harris and Priscilla Collins. Henrietta (called Kitten) was born 1804 in North Carolina.

John and Henrietta moved from Virginia to Kentucky sometime after 1838. They stayed there only a short time, moving on to Missouri in 1843. They came in a wagon train, with their six children, Henrietta’s parents, and others. They stopped first in Franklin County, then settled in Sullivan County in 1844. They were farmers and were Primitive Baptists,  and John was a schoolteacher in Missouri. They are listed in the 1850 census living in Missouri.
According to probate records in Sullivan County, John and Henrietta provided some support for four orphaned children between 1848 and 1852: Robert, Charlotte, James and Susanne Spencer, children of another John Spencer and his wife Harriet {h}. We don’t know how they may be related to this John.
John and Henrietta had somewhere between six to nine children, depending on the source of information (first cousins to us):

80.1.1. Milla Spencer {b,h} (called Millie or Milley) was born 1826 in Lee Co, Virginia.

80.1.2. Aaron Spencer {b,h} was born 1828 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died in Pleasant Hill Twp (Sullivan) Missouri. He married 5 Aug 1854 in Sullivan Co, Missouri, Sarah Kelley, the daughter of Mathias Kelley and Abigail Seignor. Aaron helped care for his widowed mother and his younger brothers and sisters after his father died. He was a schoolteacher, and was a Democrat. Aaron and Sarah were members of the Primitive Baptist Church. They are mentioned in the “Complete History of Sullivan County Missouri”, Vol. I.
Aaron and Sarah had ten children (second cousins to us):

80.1.2.1. Abigail Spencer {b} was born about 1855 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. She married 13 Jul 1874, John Fanning.

80.1.2.2. Mathias Newton Spencer {b} was born about 1857 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. He married Clara Alice Martin.

80.1.2.3. George McClellan Spencer {b} was born about 1860 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. He married Nora Brown.

80.1.2.4. Henrietta Janie Spencer {b} was born about 1863 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. She married Charles Fanning.

80.1.2.5. John W. Spencer {b} was born about 1866 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. He married Nadine “Nannie” Jones.

80.1.2.6. Joseph Marion Spencer {b} was born 22 Dec 1870 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. He married 25 Oct 1891 in Sullivan Co, Missouri, Eliza Frances Swearengen. Joseph owned and operated “Spencerville”, a general merchandise store. He grew broom corn, and made and sold corn brooms nationwide. They had five children (third cousins: William 1893, Myrtle 1894, Edward 1897, Maggie 1900, Ellen 1901).

80.1.2.7. James R. Spencer {b} was born probably around 1873 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. He married Ida Brown.

80.1.2.8. Sarah Elizabeth Spencer {b} was born probably around 1875 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. She married Willis Goodwin.

80.1.2.9. Frances Bell Spencer {b} was born probably around 1877 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. She married Dell George.

80.1.2.10. Mary Ellen Spencer {b} was born about 1880 in Sullivan Co, Missouri. She married Luther Sumpter (Sullivan Co history {b} has it as Luther Seeonpter).

80.1.3. Sarah Spencer {b} was born about 1830 in Lee Co, Virginia. Sarah is mentioned in the Sullivan County history {b}, but is absent from Louise Spencer’s list {h}.

80.1.4. Rebecca Spencer {b,h} was born 1831 in Lee Co, Virginia.

80.1.5. Charles Spencer (?) {h} was born in 1833 in Lee Co, Virginia. Louise Spencer has him as a questionable link, probably because he is absent from the Sullivan County history.

80.1.6. Rachel Spencer {h} was born in 1836 in Lee Co, Virginia. She married about 1857 in Sullivan Co, Missouri, Otis Brace.

80.1.7. Elijah A. Spencer {b,h} was born 20 Apr 1837 in Lee Co, Virginia. He married sometime after the Civil War, Nancy E. Jones. She was born 1840 in Kentucky.
Elijah was between 1 and 5 years old when his family moved to Kentucky, and at 6 years old he moved by wagon train to Missouri.
Elijah served in the Civil War, as a private in the 23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was at the Battle of Shiloh (where his entire regiment was taken prisoner, but later paroled), and later at the Siege of Atlanta and Sherman’s March to the Sea.
Elijah and Nancy had five children, of whom we know three (second cousins to us -- birthdates unknown, order of birth uncertain):

80.1.7.1. Melissa G. Spencer {b}, born probably sometime around 1870 in Missouri.

80.1.7.2. Nancy J. Spencer {b}, born probably sometime around 1870 in Missouri.

80.1.7.3. James R. Spencer {b}, born probably sometime around 1870 in Missouri.

80.1.8. Isaac Spencer {b,h} was born in 1841 in Virginia or Kentucky. He married about 1866 probably in Missouri, Rebecca Martin.

80.1.9. Benjamin Spencer (?) was born in 1846 in Missouri. This is another questionable link, as he appears in neither the Sullivan County history, or in the usually reliable Louise Spencer lists, and his assignment to this family may be incorrect. Benjamin married about 1866 in Missouri, Phinoria ___. She was born 1846 in Virginia.
Benjamin and Phinoria had two children (second cousins to us):

80.1.9.1. Sarah Spencer was born in 1867 in Missouri.

80.1.9.2. Hugh Spencer was born in 1869 in Missouri.

80.2. Elijah Spencer {a,h,N} was born 3 May 1803 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 4 Nov 1854 in Owsley Co, Kentucky. He married 16 Jul 1835 in Lee County, Mary Sturgill (called Polly Sturgill), daughter of John W. Sturgill (1780 VA - 1839 KY) and Amy Hall (1780 NC - ~1860 KY). Mary was born in 1813 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died sometime before 1910 in Powell Co, Kentucky.
The birth date we have for son Andrew is five years prior to the marriage of Elijah and Polly. Andrew was also absent from the original genealogy we were given by Rosine Spencer. I suspect therefore, that Elijah was married twice, and that Andrew may be a son of Elijah and (unknown). It is possible that Elijah and Polly had Andrew out of wedlock and were married five years after Andrew’s birth -- commonly done today, but unusual back then. It is also possible that one of the dates is incorrect.
Elijah and their youngest son Elijah Jr. died about the same time from “flux” (dysentery).
Elijah and Polly had six children (first cousins to us):

80.2.1. Andrew Jackson Spencer {g,N} was born 19 Feb 1830 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 12 Mar 1923 in Idaho. He married Phoebe Ellen Gibbs, the daughter of John Gibbs (1786 NC - >1870 KY) and Elizabeth Shepherd (1798 NC - 1878 KY). Phoebe was born 6 Mar 1834 in Morgan Co, Kentucky, and died 13 Sep 1917 in Troy, Idaho.
(If the dates are correct, Andrew was born five years before the marriage of Elijah and Polly, which causes me to suspect that he may be the child of a previous marriage -- or maybe the dates are just incorrect.)
Andrew and Phoebe had four children (second cousins to us):

80.2.1.1. Agnes Caroline Spencer {g} was born 31 Mar 1855 in Owsley Co, Kentucky.

80.2.1.2. John Franklin Spencer {g,N} was born 28 May 1861 in Kentucky, and died 16 Jan 1943 in Moscow (Latah) Idaho. He married Mary Elizabeth Booth, the daughter of William T. Booth (1823 VA - 1908 KY) and Elizabeth Shoemaker (1833 KY - 1902 KY). Mary was born 17 Aug 1867 in Wolfe Co, Kentucky, and died 24 Feb 1962 in Moscow (Latah) Idaho. They had eight children, born in Idaho.

80.2.3. Malinda Spencer was born 12 Feb 1839.

80.2.4. Mary Agatha Spencer was born in 1839 in Kentucky, and died sometime before 1900 in Powell Co, Kentucky. The birth dates for Malinda and Mary are troublesome. Either Mary was born very late in the year, or one of the dates is wrong, or Mary and Malinda are twins, or there is only one person and Mary = Malinda. Mary married Eli C. Proffit. Eli was born in Kentucky.
Mary and Eli had four children (second cousins to us):

80.2.4.1. John B. Proffit was born 17 Apr 1856 in Owsley Co, Kentucky.
