Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Helen Spencer

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Abraham Spencer and Nancy Jamison

NOTABLES: 40.2. William served in the Civil War

40. Abraham Spencer {a,b,d,e,f} was born 7 Jan 1808 in Lee Co, Virginia, and died 23 Jan 1878 in Bower’s Mill (Jasper) Missouri. He is a son of Aaron Spencer [80] and Rachel Daugherty [81]. Abraham migrated to Kentucky about 1823 with most of his siblings, after his father died. He married 12 Aug 1830 in Madison Co, Kentucky,

41. Nancy Jamison {a,b,d,e,f}, also seen as Nancy Jameson. Nancy was born 20 May 1807 in Madison Co, Kentucky, and died 8 Jan 1882 in Jasper Co, Missouri. She is a daughter of John Jameson [82] and Elizabeth Harris [83].

Abraham and Nancy moved to Franklin, Missouri sometime in the early 1830’s. They were in Sullivan County in the late 1840’s, and settled permanently in Jasper County after 1849. Abraham was a wagon maker and a minister. Their religion is given only as Protestant -- several of Abraham’s siblings were Baptist, Abraham and Nancy may have been also. They were living in Jasper County during the Civil War, so very likely went through some hardship. The area was torn up by frequent guerilla raids and battles. Jasper County was ruined and much of the population driven out by the end of the war. Two of their sons served in the Missouri militia during the war.

Abraham and Nancy had seven children:

William served in the Civil War, as a Sergeant in Company G, 76th Enrolled Missouri Militia. He served 25 Nov 1862 to 31 Mar 1863, when he was taken prisoner by the Confederates. The last entry in his records says that he was discharged, “prisoner in the hands of the enemy.”
