Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Alfred Sorensen

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Christen Nielsen Borregaard and Kirsten Pedersdatter

96. Christen Nielsen Borregaard was born 11 Aug 1738 in Haverslev Sogn (Oster Han, Hjoerring) Denmark, and died 20 Oct 1780 in Haverslev Sogn. He is a son of Niels Christensen Borregaard [192] and Anna Thogersdatter [193]. He married 22 Oct 1762 in Haverslev Sogn,

97. Kirsten Pedersdatter. Kirsten was born Jan 1734 in Lorsted, Haverslev Sogn (Oster Han, Hjoerring) Denmark, and died sometime after 1782 in Denmark. She is a daughter of Peder Madsen [194] and Kirsten Christendatter [195]. After Christen died, Kirsten married again, 17 Nov 1781 in Haverslev Sogn, Morten Jorgensen. There were no children from the second marriage.

Christen has the same last name as his father, appearing to follow the modern surname convention. I am not certain that this is correct, as his siblings are listed separately under 192 Niels without the Borregaard surname. We do not have access to the original church baptism records and cannot see whether or not “Borregaard” was recorded, but I suspect it is not really a name, but a title that was either handed down or earned separately by the father and son. Christen has the Nielsen as his “middle“ name, and Niels has the Christensen from his father; I think these are actually their surnames.

Kristen’s surname is from the old Scandinavian convention, meaning “daughter of Peder”.

Christen and Kirsten were Lutheran. Like his father, Christen was part owner and manager of a large community farm in Haverslev Sogn, which I believe is where the Borregaard comes from. Christen’s will was read in the Haverslev court in October 1780; it divided his estate between his wife and children. He left a farm with a 12-person house, 4 sheep and a cow.

Christen and Kirsten had five children:

96.1. Peder Christensen was born 6 Nov 1763 in Haverslev Sogn (Oster Han, Hjoerring) Denmark, and died the same year.

96.2. Peder Christensen was born 21 Oct 1764 in Haverslev Sogn (Oster Han, Hjoerring) Denmark, and died the same year.

96.3. Niels Christensen [48] (1766 Denmark - 1826 Denmark) and Maren Poulsdatter are direct ancestors, separate page.

96.4. Marianne Christendatter was born 8 Aug 1768 in Haverslev Sogn (Oster Han, Hjoerring) Denmark.

96.5. Anne Margrethe Christendatter was born 8 Aug 1770 in Haverslev Sogn (Oster Han, Hjoerring) Denmark.
