Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Alfred Sorensen

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

12. Niels Peder Sorensen {a,b,g} was born 23 Oct 1855 in Haverslev Sogn, (Oester Han, Hjoerring) Denmark, and died 7 May 1927 in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin. He is a son of Soren Anders Nielsen [24] and Karen Poulsdatter [25]. He married about 1880 in Hjoerring Amt, Denmark,

13. Mathilde Pedersen {a,b,g}, also known as Mauera Pedersen. Mathilde was born 2 May 1859 in Dronninglund Sogn, (Dronninglund, Hjoerring) Denmark, and died 14 Apr 1949 in Racine (Racine) Wisconsin. She is a daughter of Peder Christen Pedersen [26] and Sophie ___ [27].

Niels’ parents followed the old Scandinavian naming convention, naming him Sorensen after his father Soren. If modern convention had been followed, the Sorensen family name today would perhaps be Borregaard.

Mathilde’s surname may be the same, derived from her father Peder. However, as Peder’s name was also Pedersen, we cannot be certain -- they may have started following modern convention. If they went strictly by the old way, her name should properly be Mathilde Pedersdatter, so I think they probably were using the modern convention and gave her his last name.

Niels and Mathilda lived on the large island north of the main Danish peninsula. They were Lutheran. They migrated to the United States, arriving in April 1890, with their first four children. They settled in Racine, Wisconsin, where their last three children were born. They used the modern naming convention for their children, locking in the name Sorensen.

Niels was a carpenter and coachbuilder in Denmark. In Wisconsin he was a carpenter and built houses. He died from a skull fracture caused by falling from a garage roof.
