Rita’s Family: Ancestors of Marietta Hale |
||
| These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further. | HOME | |

NOTABLES: 58.3. Theodore served in the Civil War |
58. Wilmot O. Willis was born probably about 1800, possibly in New York. He married about 1820 in New York,
59. Mary ___. She was born probably about 1800, possibly in New York.
These are the earliest known ancestors in this line. The name Willis means son of Will; i.e., it is about the same as Wilson or Williams. It is a common English name, with many unrelated lines in this country. It derives ultimately from William, which is Germanic. It may indicate a son of William, but was also commonly taken in honor of King William.
We have only a little information on Wilmot and Mary. They were farmers. They appear in the 1840 New York census, living in Chemunga County, and they are listed on the marriage certificate for daughter Mary.
Wilmot and Mary had eight children, only four of whom are known:
58.1. Cornelia A. Willis {a,b} was born about 1822 in New York. She married ___ Parker.
58.2. James R. Willis {a,b} was born probably in the 1830’s in New York.
58.3. Theodore F. Willis {a,c} was born probably in the 1830’s in New York. Theodore served in the Civil War. He was a private in the 43rd Wisconsin Infantry.
58.4. Unknown son {a}, probably born in 1820’s or early 1830’s.
58.5. Unknown son {a}, probably born in 1820’s or early 1830’s.
58.6. Unknown son {a}, probably born in 1820’s or early 1830’s.
58.7. Mary E. Willis [29] (1835 NY - 1928 WI) and Frederick L. Hale are direct ancestors, separate page.
58.8. Unknown son {a}, probably born in 1830’s.
