Griswold Family Connections

This family is not directly related to us. I include this partial descent list due to the frequent intermarriage with our family. I have left out most of the children, including only those who married into our lines.

Edward and Michael are supposed to be brothers, sons of George Griswold and Dorothy James, born around 1550. That’s getting back into mythological times as far as I am concerned, but who knows, could be right...

Edward Griswold was born about 1607 in England, and died 30 Aug 1691 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married in 1630 in England,
Margaret Hicks (some have her as Margaret Blencow). Margaret was born in 1611 in England, and died 23 Aug 1670 in Clinton (Middlesex) Connecticut.

Edward and Margaret had eleven children (Francis, Sarah, George, John, Lydia, Anna, Mary, Deborah, Joseph, Samuel, John), of whom we list four:

A. Francis Griswold was born in 1635 in Warwickshire, England, and died in 1704 (some have 1671) in Connecticut. He married Mary Tracy.
Francis and Mary had nine children (Mary, Sarah, Joseph, Hannah, Deborah, Lydia, Samuel, Margaret, Lydia), of whom we list two:

A7. Samuel Griswold was born 16 Sep 1665 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut, and died in 1740 in Norwich. He married Susannah Huntington, daughter of Christopher Huntington and Ruth Rockwell. Susannah was born in 1668 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut, and died 6 Mar 1722 (some have 1727) in Norwich.
Samuel and Susannah had eight children (Francis, Samuel, Lydia, Hannah, Sarah, John, Joseph, Daniel), of whom we list one:

A71. Francis Griswold was born 9 Sep 1691 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut, and died 10 Apr 1760 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut. He married 30 Nov 1714, Elizabeth Loomis [31338.5.1.2], daughter of John Loomis and Mary Judd.

A9. Lydia Griswold was born Oct 1671 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut, and died in 1751 in Plymouth (Plymouth) Massachusetts. She married Joseph Bartlett, son of Joseph Bartlett and Hannah Pope.
Lydia and Joseph had five children (Joseph, Samuel, Lydia, Benjamin, Sarah), of whom we list one:

A91. Joseph Bartlett was born 15 May 1693 in Plymouth (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 13 Jul 1756 in Plymouth. He married 18 Mar 1716/17 in Plymouth, his second cousin Elizabeth Bartlett [7862.11.7], daughter of Samuel Bartlett and Hannah Pabodie. Elizabeth was born in 1696 and died in 1776. Joseph and Elizabeth are cousins through the Bartlett family, outside our lines.

C. George Griswold was born in 1633 in England, and died 3 Sep 1704. He married Mary Holcomb, daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Elizabeth Ferguson. Mary was born 4 Apr 1635 in Dorchester (Suffolk) Massachusetts, and died 4 Apr 1708.
George and Mary had nine children (Daniel, Thomas, Edward, Mary, John, Benjamin, Deborah, Abigail, Samuel), of whom we list one:

C1. Daniel Griswold was born 1 Oct 1656 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut, and died in 1728. He married 3 Feb 1680 in Windsor, Mindwell Bissell, daughter of Nathaniel Bissell and Mindwell Moore. Mindwell was born 23 Oct 1663 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 31 Dec 1728 in Windsor.
Daniel and Mindwell had eight children (Nathaniel, Daniel, Mindwell, Pelatiah, Mary, Edward, Deborah, David), of whom we list one:

C13. Mindwell Griswold was born about 1685 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut. She married Ebenezer Hayden [15736.6.6], son of Daniel Hayden and Hannah Wilcoxson. Ebenezer was born in 1681.

H. Deborah Griswold was born 26 Jun 1646 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 17 Feb 1716/17 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. She married 30 Nov 1662 Samuel Buell, son of William Buell and Mary Post. Samuel was born 2 Sep 1641 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 11 Jul 1720 in Clinton (Middlesex) Connecticut.
Deborah and Samuel had twelve children (Samuel, Deborah, Hannah, Mary, John, Hannah, William, David, Josiah, Mehitabel, Peter, Benjamin), of whom we list five:

H1. Samuel Buell was born 20 Jul 1663 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 2 Nov 1732 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married on 16 Aug 1686 in Windsor, Judith Stevens [7824.6], daughter of William Stevens and Mary Meigs. Judith was born in 1668 and died in 1732.

H5. John Buell was born in 1671 in Connecticut, and died in 1746. He married Mary Loomis [31338.5.1.1], daughter of John Loomis and Mary Judd. Mary was born in 1673 and died in 1768.

H7. William Buell was born 18 Oct 1676 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 7 Apr 1763 in Lebanon (New London) Connecticut. He married Elizabeth Collins, daughter of Joseph Collins and Elizabeth Sanford.
William and Elizabeth had several children, of whom we list one:

H71. Samuel Buell was born 5 Nov 1708 in Lebanon (New London) Connecticut, and died in 1759 in Connecticut. He was married, but his wife is unknown. Their son:

H711. Ephraim Buell was born 21 Aug 1742 in Hebron (Tolland) Connecticut, and died 4 Jan 1820 in Crosby (Hamilton) Ohio. He married Priscilla Holmes. Priscilla was born in 1745 and died in 1820.
Ephraim and Priscilla had nine children, including:

H7111. Salmon Buell was born 23 Nov 1764 in Fort Edward, New York. He married Joanna Sturtevant. Joanna was born in 1766 and died in 1812.
Their son:

H71111. Salmon D. Buell was born 11 Aug 1794 in Ohio, and died in 1823 from cholera. He served in the War of 1812. He married his cousin Elizabeth Buell, daughter of Timothy. Their son:

H711111. Don Carlos Buell was born 23 Mar 1818 near Marietta, Ohio, and died 19 Nov 1898 near Paradise, Kentucky. He graduated from West Point in 1841 and served a 23-year career in the US Army. He fought in the Seminole War (1841-1842), the Mexican War, and the Civil War, in which he rose to the rank of Major General. After resigning in 1864, he worked in coal mining in Kentucky, and was president of the Green River Iron Company. Not directly related to us, he is a cousin to many of our cousins.

H8. David Buell was born 15 Feb 1678 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 25 Feb 1749 in Killingworth. He married 11 May 1701, Phebe Fenner, daughter of John Fenner and Sarah Clarke. Phebe was born 6 Sep 1673 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.
David and Phebe had several children, of whom we list one:

H81. Sarah Buell was born about 1705. She married John Murray, son of Jonathan Murray (1665-1747) and Ann Bradley (1669-1749). John was born on 10 Oct 1703 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died there 9 Sep 1789.
Sarah and John had several children, of whom we list one:

H811. Jesse Murray was born 20 Jan 1746 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 12 Apr 1824 in East Guilford. He married Rachel Norton [7820.6.4.7], daughter of Reuben Norton (1711-1796) and Hannah Hooker. Rachel was born in 1750 probably in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.

Hc. Benjamin Buell was born in 1686 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1725 in Killingworth. He married 28 Jun 1718 Hannah Hutchinson [SPENCER 5632.7.3.1.3] daughter of John Hutchinson and Hannah Root. Hannah was born in 1688 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut, and died in 1728 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
Benjamin and Hannah had seven children (Hannah, Deborah, John, Submit, Benjamin, Mary, Experience), four of whom marry into Bill’s side of the family.

K. John Griswold was born in 1652 in Windsor (Hartford) Connecticut (baptized 1 April), and died 7 Aug 1717 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married first, 8 Aug 1672, Mary Bemis. Mary was born about 1655 and died 27 Oct 1679. John and Mary had four children (Mary, Margaret, Hannah, John).
John married second, about 1680, Bathsheba North.
John and Bathsheba had ten children (Dorothy, Bathsheba, Samuel, Lucy, Joseph, Benjamin, Dorothy, Martha, Daniel, Walter) of whom we list three:

K5. Joseph Griswold was born 26 Sep 1690 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 18 Apr 1771 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut. He married Temperance Lay, daughter of Robert Lay and Mary Stanton. Temperance was born 25 Jul 1691 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died on 18 Sep 1773 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
Joseph and Temperance had eight children (John, Joseph, Nathan, Temperance, Giles, John, Daniel, Jedediah), of whom we list four:

K52. Joseph Griswold was born 22 Oct 1716 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 13 Jul 1791 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire. He married 4 Dec 1740 in Killingworth, Rebecca Rutty [7838.1.6.1], daughter of Edward Rutty and Rachel Sheather. Rebecca was born in 1719 and died in 1747.

K53. Nathan Griswold was born 28 Apr 1719 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 15 Jun 1791 in Killingworth. (Some have him as the son of Joseph's brother Benjamin, K6 below.) Nathan married 2 May 1745 in Clinton (Middlesex) Connecticut, Sarah Hull [7834.3.3], daughter of Josiah Hull and Elizabeth ___. Sarah was born in 1725 and died in 1794.

K55. Giles Griswold was born 3 Jun 1723 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 23 Apr 1804 in Killingworth. He married 17 Nov 1746 in Killingworth, Mercy Chatfield [1958.4], daughter of Josiah Chatfield and Mary Hull. Mercy was born in 1730 and died about 1808.

K56. John Griswold was born 6 Mar 1725/26 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 27 Aug 1776 in Long Island, New York. He married on 13 Jan 1747/48 in Killingworth, Mary Ward [7822.5.1.3], daughter of Pelatiah Ward and Jerusha Kelsey. Mary was born in 1730.

K6. Benjamin Griswold was born 26 Sep 1690 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut (twin to Joseph). He married 17 Jun 1718 in Killingworth, Abigail Norton [3910.1], daughter of Samuel Norton and Abigail Ward. Abigail was born in 1693 (or some have it 1698).

K9. Daniel Griswold was born 25 Oct 1696 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 10 Sep 1737 in Clinton (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married 9 May 1722 in Killingworth, Jerusha Stevens [3912.4], daughter of Josiah Stevens and Sarah Hubbell. Jerusha was born in 1704 and died in 1792.

Michael Griswold was born about 1620 in England (some have 1597), and died in 1684 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut. He married

Ann ___. Some have her as Ann Adams, others have surname unknown. Ann was born in 1624 in England, and died in 1682 in Hartford (Hartford) Connecticut.

Michael and Ann had nine children (Thomas, Hester, Mary, Michael, Abigail, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Michael), of whom we list three:

a. Thomas Griswold was born 22 Oct 1646 in Hartford (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 28 Oct 1718 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut. He married on 28 Nov 1672 in Wethersfield, Mary Howard, daughter of Henry Howard and Sarah Stone. Mary was born about 1650 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 29 Oct 1718 in Wethersfield.
Thomas and Mary had six children (Thomas, Jacob, Isaac, Michael, Martha, Samuel), of whom we list four:

a1. Thomas Griswold was born 11 Jan 1673 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 19 Oct 1729 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut. He married 9 May 1697, Sarah Bradley, daughter of Stephen Bradley (1642-1701) and Hannah Smith. Sarah was born 17 Oct 1676.
Thomas and Sarah probably had several children, we only know of one:

a11. Thomas Griswold was born 26 Mar 1708 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 16 Jan 1784. He married Anna Graves [7824.4.2.1], daughter of Elizabeth Stevens and John Graves. Anna was born 12 Apr 1715 probably in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 29 May 1801.

a2. Jacob Griswold was born 5 Feb 1674/75 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut. He married 30 Nov 1696 in Wethersfield, Abigail Hand [7812.4], daughter of Stephen Hand and Sarah Stratton. Abigail was born in 1681 and died in 1747.

a6. Samuel Griswold was born 14 Apr 1685 probably in Connecticut. He married Mary Francis, daughter of John Francis and Mercy Chatterton (also seen as Mercy Chittenden). Mary was born 26 May 1689. Her aunt Abigail marries into Rita’s side of the family.

Samuel and Mary had fourteen children (Lucy, David, Sarah, Mercy, Samuel, Jared, Lucy, Nehemiah, Jeremiah, Moses, John, Mary, Manus, Aaron), of whom we list two:

a64. Mercy Griswold was born 27 Jul 1708 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 29 Aug 1782 in Durham (Middlesex) Connecticut. She married 27 Nov 1729 in Durham, Silas Crane [7864.8.1], son of Henry Crane and Abigail Flood. Silas was born in 1705 and died in 1763.

a6c. Mary Griswold was born 23 Jun 1723 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 2 Mar 1799 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. She married in 1742 in Killingworth, John Norton [15640.6.8.2], son of John Norton (1686-1768) and Elizabeth ___.

c. Mary Griswold was born 28 Jan 1650 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 8 Aug 1670 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. She married in 1669 in Connecticut, Obadiah Wilcoxson [15736.8], son of William Wilcoxson and Margaret Birdseye. Obadiah was born in 1648 and died in 1714.

f. Isaac Griswold was born 10 Sep 1658 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 13 Jun 1727 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married in 1689 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, Elizabeth Bradley, daughter of Stephen Bradley (1642-1701) and Hannah Smith. Elizabeth was born on 31 Dec 1671 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 17 Oct 1732 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
Michael and Elizabeth had five children (Michael, Richard, Hannah, Elizabeth, Isaac), of whom we list two:

f1. Michael Griswold was born 4 Jun 1690 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 8 Jun 1753 in Killingworth. He married 5 Sep 1713 in Killingworth, Elizabeth Hull [3918.2], daughter of Thomas Hull (1665-1720) and Hannah Sheather (1666-1714). Elizabeth was born in 1691 and died in 1752.

f4. Elizabeth Griswold was born 5 Apr 1700 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1735 in Killingworth. She married 25 Jan 1722 in Killingworth, Nathaniel Hull [3918.5], son of Thomas Hull (1665-1720) and Hannah Sheather (1666-1714). Nathaniel was born 23 Apr 1699 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.

h. Sarah Griswold was born 30 Sep 1662 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 8 May 1729 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut. She married in Sep 1682, James Hill. James was born 15 May 1646 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 9 Oct 1707 in Guilford.
Sarah and James had nine children (Sarah, Isaac, James, Anne, Daniel, John, Charity, Michael, Mary), of whom we list one:

h8. Michael Hill was born 22 Oct 1698 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 23 Jun 1752 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married about 1720, Sarah Parmelee, daughter of Isaac Parmelee and Elizabeth Highland.
