Chittenden/ Crittenden families

These families are not directly related to us, but I include this partial descent list due to the frequent
intermarriage.  I have left out most of the children, including only those who married into our lines.
Chittenden is related to Crittenden and Cruttenden, and the varied spellings make it difficult to track them.

I.

William Chittenden was born Mar 1594 in Cranbrook (Kent) England, and died 1 Feb 1660/61 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  He married
Joanna Sheafe.  Joanna was born in 1613 in Cranbrook (Kent) England, and died 16 Aug 1668 in Guilford.
William and Joanna arrived in New Haven, Connecticut in Jul 1639.
Four of their lines marry into ours:

a.  Thomas Chittenden was born about 1640 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Oct 1683 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  He married Joanna Jordan [7854.3], daughter of John Jordan and Anne Bishop.

b.  John Chittenden was born in 1642 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Apr 1716 in Guilford.  He married Hannah Fletcher.  Hannah was born in 1643 in Milford (New Haven) Connecticut.

John and Sarah had six children:  John 1666, Elizabeth 1670, Joseph 1672, Gideon 1679, Abel 1681, Lydia 1684.
Of interest to us are:

b1.  John Chittenden was born 19 Oct 1666, and died Feb 1710.  He married 13 Mar 1701, Sarah Clay.  Sarah was born 5 Mar 1674, and died on 5 Apr 1717.
John and Sarah had several children, including:

b11.  Samuel Chittenden was born 16 Aug 1704 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 10 Jul 1783 in Guilford.  He married Susannah Bishop [7810.7.3], daughter of Samuel Bishop and Abigail Whitmoor.  After Susannah died, Samuel married 8 Sep 1748, Phyllis Burgis, widow of 3920.3.2 Nathaniel Johnson.
Samuel and second wife Phyllis had one child:

b111.  Benjamin Chittenden was born 23 Nov 1749, and died 1 Sep 1820.  He is a half-brother to the children of 7810.7.3 Susannah Bishop.  Benjamin married 16 Jan 1777, Mabel Dudley [3924.3.1.8], daughter of Thomas Dudley and Abigail Seward.

b2. Elizabeth Chittenden was born 26 Jan 1670, and died 1 Aug 1712. She married in 1711, Thomas Crittenden, son of Abraham Cruttenden and Susanna Griegson below.

Some of their descendants marry into our family.

b3.  Joseph Chittenden was born 26 Mar 1672 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 11 Sep 1727 in Guilford.  He married in 1692, Mary Kimberly.  Mary was born in 1671 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 14 Jan 1741/42 in Guilford.  Mary's sister Abigail also has connections to our family through Highland/Crtittenden, and her first cousin Sarah Kimberly marries into Rita's side [SPENCER 5632.9.1.2 John Kilbourne].
Joseph and Mary had several children, including:

b31.  Deborah Chittenden was born 28 Jan 1692/93 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Feb 1766.  She married 2 Aug 1721, John Spinning [7852.7.1.1], son of John Spinning and Rachel Savage.

b32.  Patience Chittenden was born in 1696 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 6 Jun 1769 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  She married John Hubbard [3926.1.4], son of Daniel Hubbard and Elizabeth Cruttenden.

b33.  Daniel Chittenden was born 15 Mar 1700 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 18 May 1781 in North Guilford.  He married in 1726, Abigail Downs.  Abigail was born about 1708, and died 1 Aug 1782 in North Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.
Daniel and Abigail had several children, including:

b331.    Mary Chittenden was born 26 Jun 1730 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 18 Nov 1821.  She married 25 Dec 1754, Jared Dudley [3924.8.7], son of William Dudley and Ruth Strong.

b34.  Joseph Chittenden was born 25 Jan 1702 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 7 Apr 1794 in Guilford.  He married 14 Apr 1726, Patience Stone [3922.1.1], daughter of Benajah Stone and Hannah DeWolf.

b35.  Gideon Chittenden was born 3 Feb 1696/97 in Connecticut.  He married Abigail Bishop [7810.7.2], daughter of Samuel Bishop and Abigail Whitmoor.

b5.  Abel Chittenden was born 14 May 1681 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in Guilford.  He married 5 Jul 1721 in Guilford, Deborah Scranton [7810.4.4], daughter of John Scranton and Elizabeth Bishop.  Deborah was born 3 Dec 1697 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.

c.  Nathaniel Chittenden was born 1643 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Jun 1691 in Guilford.  He married Sarah Wright.
Two of their lines merge into ours:

c1.  Joseph Chittenden was born 6 Sep 1677.  He married Mehitabel Pierce.  Mehitabel was born probably around 1680 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut.
Joseph and Mehitabel had two children who married into our lines:

c11.  Mary Chittenden was born 26 Mar 1710 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  She married in 1730, Benajah Stone [3922.1.3], son of Benajah Stone and Hannah DeWolf.

c12.  Mehitabel Chittenden was born 30 Sep 1712 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  She married Ebenezer Bishop [7810.6.4], son of Nathaniel Bishop and Mary Hughes.

c2.  Nathaniel Chittenden was born 10 Aug 1669.  Some have him married to 15648.3.10 Elizabeth Stevens, but we had Elizabeth married to Abraham Post. Dates and children overlap, we have no solid evidence to resolve the conflict.
Nathaniel had several children, of whom we list:

c24.  Nathaniel Chittenden was born 6 Jun 1701, and died Aug 1762 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.  He married Lucy Nettleton [15666.1.1.4], daughter of John Nettleton and Sarah Woodmansee.

d. Mary Chittenden was born in 1647 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 9 Mar 1711/12 in Guilford. She married John Leete, son of William Leete (1611-1683) and Anne Payne (~1621-1668). John was born about 1639 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 25 Nov 1692 probably in Guilford.

Mary and William had several children, of whom we list three:

d1. Ann Leete was born 5 Aug 1671, and died 2 Nov 1724. She married John Collins, son of John Collins and Mary Trowbridge. John was born in 1665 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 24 Jan 1751/52 in Guilford. He was a tanner.

Ann and John had several children, of whom we list one:

d11. Daniel Collins was born 13 Jun 1701 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 8 Oct 1751 in Guilford. He married 15 Mar 1725, Lois Cornwall, daughter of William Cornwall and Esther ___. Lois was born 8 Feb 1702/03, and died 4 Feb 1768.

Daniel and Lois had several children, of whom we list one:

d111. Augustus Cornwall was born 7 Aug 1743 and died 30 Apr 1814. He is commonly said to have been a general, but we haven't found any details on this. Augustus married 9 Jun 1768 in North Guilford, his cousin Mary Chittenden [7820.8.6.5], daughter of Submit Scranton and Simeon Chittenden. Mary was born 12 Oct 1747 and died 21 Jan 1821. Augustus and Mary are third cousins, both being descended from William Chittenden and Joanna Sheafe.

d2. John Leete was born 1674 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died May 1730 in Guilford. He married first, Sarah Allen. Sarah was born about 1674 in Milford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 8 Mar 1712 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.

John and Sarah probably had several children, of whom we list one:

d21. Mary Leete was born 18 Feb 1701 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 12 Jan 1778. She married in 1726, Abial Eliot, son of Joseph Eliot and Mary Wyllys. Abial was born about 1700 and died 28 Oct 1776.

Mary and Abial probably had several children, of whom we list two:

d211. Wyllys Eliot was born in 1731 and died in 1777. He married Abigail Ward [7822.1.2.5], daughter of Andrew Ward and Elizabeth Fowler. Abigail was born 23 Apr 1731 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 18 Apr 1801 in Guilford.

d212. Timothy Eliot was born 23 Oct 1736. He married Rebecca Rose [1962.1.5], daughter of Jacob Rose and Ann Dudley. Rebecca was born on 5 Jul 1745 in Branford (New Haven) Connecticut.

John married second, Mehitabel Allis (name is uncertain, some web sources have Mehitabel Chalker, or Mehitabel Allen).

John and Mehitabel probably had several children, of whom we list one:

d22. Reuben Leete was born 29 May 1714 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 18 Jan 1794 in Guilford. He married Lucy Bartlett [7834.1.6.1], daughter of Timothy Bartlett and Susannah Crittenden. Lucy was born 11 Jan 1728/29 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Jun 1803 in Hartford (Hartford) Connecticut.

d3. Pelatiah Leete was born 26 Mar 1681 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 13 Oct 1768 in Leetes Island (New Haven) Connecticut. He married on 1 Jul 1705, Abigail Fowler [7852.1.3.1], daughter of Abraham Fowler and Elizabeth Bartlett.

II.

Abraham Cruttenden was born 1610 in England, and died 1683 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  He married
Mary Hinkson.  Mary was born about 1610 in England, and died in 1664 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.

Four of their lines merge into ours:

a.  Abraham Cruttenden was born in 1635 in Kent, England, and died in 1694 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  He married Susanna Griegson.  Susanna was born in 1640, and died in 1712.

Five of their lines merge into ours:

a1.  Sarah Cruttenden was born 21 Aug 1665 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 27 Oct 1692 in Guilford.  She married Thomas Robinson [7850.1], son of Thomas Robinson and Mary ___.  Thomas also married her cousin Sarah Graves (b1).

a2.  Abraham Cruttenden was born 6 Mar 1662 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  He married 6 May 1686, Susannah Kirby, daughter of John Kirby and Elizabeth ___.  Susannah was born 3 May 1664 in Middletown (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died Oct 1729 in Guilford.

One of their lines marries into ours:

a21.  Mary Cruttenden was born 15 Dec 1690 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 9 May 1776 in Guilford.  She married 16 May 1716, Thomas Gould [7850.7.1], son of Benjamin Gould and Elizabeth Robinson.

a3.  Thomas Crittenden was born 31 Jan 1667/68 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 14 Sep 1754 in Guilford.  He married first, about 1690 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, Abigail Hull [7834.1], daughter of John Hull and Abigail Kelsey. He married second in 1711, Elizabeth Chittenden, daughter of John Chittenden and Hannah Fletcher, above.

Thomas and second wife Elizabeth probably had several children, of whom we list one:

a31. Elizabeth Crittenden (also seen as Elizabeth Cruttenden) was born in 1712 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 11 Mar 1789 in East Guilford. She married 20 Jul 1732, John Crampton. John was born 16 Jan 1709 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 29 Jun 1790 in East Guilford.

Elizabeth and John had several children, of whom we list two:

a311. John Crampton was born 1 Jun 1733 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 14 Mar 1800 in Guilford. He married 25 Mar 1761 in Guilford, his cousin Susannah Chittenden [7810.7.3.2], daughter of Samuel Chittenden and Susannah Bishop. John and Susannah are second cousins, both being descended from John Chittenden [I-b] and Hannah Fletcher, above.

a312. Elizabeth Crampton was born 28 Nov 1737 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 26 May 1814 in Guilford. She married her cousin Noah Chittenden [7810.7.3.4], son of Samuel Chittenden and Susannah Bishop. Elizabeth and Noah are second cousins, both being descended from John Chittenden [I-b] and Hannah Fletcher, above.

a4.  John Cruttenden was born 15 Aug 1671 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 16 May 1751 in Guilford.  He married 6 May 1703, Bathsheba Johnson [7810.1.6], daughter of Isaac Johnson and Mary Bishop.

a5.  Joseph Crittenden was born 9 Apr 1674 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 6 Feb 1753 in Guilford.  He married 2 May 1700 in Guilford, Mercy Hoyt.  Mercy was born 10 Feb 1679 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 3 Jan 1750 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.
Three of their lines merge into ours:

a51.  Hannah Crittenden was born 6 Apr 1703 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 9 Sep 1777 in Litchfield (Litchfield) Connecticut.  She married 29 Oct 1725 in Killingworth, John Farnum [7868.4.8], son of Peter Farnum and Hannah Wilcoxson.

a52.  Deborah Crittenden (also seen as Cruttenden) was born 23 Jun 1705 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 9 Sep 1787 in Guilford.  She married 1 Jan 1728/29, Ebenezer Bartlett [7864.3.6], son of Daniel Bartlett and Concurrence Crane.

a53.  Jane Cruttenden was born 23 Feb 1720/21 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 2 Jul 1798.  She married 26 Nov 1740, John Parmelee, son of John Parmelee (1691 - 1775) and Mary Hubbard (~1700 - 1774).  John was born 19 May 1719 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 12 Jan 1799.  John's sister and two aunts marry into our family.  I suspect he may be related to us through his mother, but cannot find the connection.
Jane and John had several children, among whom we list

a531.  Eber Parmelee was born 14 Nov 1750 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 5 May 1818.  He married 26 Nov 1775, Ruth Johnson [3920.3.11.1], daughter of Nathan Johnson and Prudence Chittenden.

b.  Elizabeth Cruttenden (also seen as Crittenden) was born in 1639 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1698 in Guilford.  She married John Graves.  John was born in 1633 in England, and died 31 Dec 1695 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  He was a Congregational Deacon.
Five of their lines merge into ours:

b1.  Sarah Graves was born about1660, and died 10 Sep 1715 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  She married Thomas Robinson [7850.1], son of Thomas Robinson and Mary ___.  Thomas had first married her cousin Sarah Cruttenden (a1).

b2.  Joseph Graves was born 27 Aug 1672 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1714 in Guilford.  He married Margaret Wilcoxson [7868.7], daughter of Joseph Wilcoxson and Margaret Sheather.

b3.  Hannah Graves was born 12 Jan 1680 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 21 Mar 1757.  She married 6 Jan 1709 in Guilford, Nathaniel Stone [15688.3.3.3], son of Nathaniel Stone and Mary Bartlett.

b4.  John Graves was born 27 Feb 1658/59 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 1 Dec 1726.  He married Elizabeth Foote, daughter of Robert Foote (1627-1681) and Sarah Potter (1641-1706).  Elizabeth was born 8 Mar 1664 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticu, and died 14 May 1730.

John and Elizabeth had several children, five of whom merge into our family:

b41. John Graves was born 1 Feb 1689/90 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 17 Jul 1763 in Guilford. He married 10 May 1714 in Guilford, Elizabeth Stevens [7824.4.2] , daughter of Nathaniel Stevens (1661-1709) and Sarah ___. Elizabeth was born about 1692 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 20 Feb 1724/25.

b42.  Mindwell Graves was born 4 Nov 1696 in Connecticut, and died in 1771.  She married 10 Nov 1713 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, Nathaniel Stevens [7824.4.3], son of Nathaniel Stevens and Sarah ___. Nathaniel was born in 1693 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 9 May 1747 in Guilford.

b43.  Sarah Graves was born 14 Apr 1699 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 30 May 1784 in Guilford.  She married 14 Dec 1720 in Guilford, Thomas French [7808.1.2.4], son of Ebenezer French and Susannah Blatchley.

b44.  Elizabeth Graves was born 11 Mar 1704 in Lyme (new London) Connecticut, and died 2 Nov 1775 in Clinton (Middlesex) Connecticut.  She married 18 Mar 1728 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, Daniel Redfield [1964.1], son of Theophilus Redfield and Priscilla Grinnell.

b45.  Ebenezer Graves was born 15 Jul 1705 in Connecticut, and died 1 Mar 1785.  He married 12 Feb 1730, Marian Isbell (also seen as Mary Isbell and as Marion Isbell).

Ebenezer and Marian had several children, including

b451.  Elizabeth Graves was born Sep 1736, and died 17 Apr 1766.  She married 20 Dec 1760, her cousin John Graves [3910.3.6], son of John Graves and Keziah Norton.  John was born 9 Oct 1735 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died there 13 Apr 1791.  Elizabeth and John are third cousins through Graves.

b5. Abigail Graves was born around 1670 and died 13 Apr 1753 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut. She married 14 Jun 1694, Ebenezer Benton, son of Daniel Benton (1637-1672) and Rachel Guttridge. Ebenezer was born in 1663 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 22 Jan 1758.

Abigail and Ebenezer had six children (Daniel, Elizabeth, Ebenezer, Abigail, Caleb, Rebecca), of whom we list:

b51. Daniel Benton was born 1 Jun 1695 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 25 Aug 1756. He married 8 Aug 1728, Elizabeth Norton [7820.2.6], daughter of John Norton and Hannah Buck.

b53. Ebenezer Benton was born 12 Jun 1700 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 11 Feb 1776 in Litchfield (Litchfield) Connecticut. He married 3 Nov 1725, his cousin Esther Crittenden [7834.1.4], daughter of Thomas Crittenden (II.a3, above) and Abigail Hull. Ebenezer and Esther are second cousins, both being descended from [II] Abraham Cruttenden and Mary Hinckson, above.

b55. Caleb Benton was born 25 Jul 1706 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 27 Nov 1782 in Guilford. He married first, 25 Sep 1740 in Guilford, Sarah Stone [7816.8.2], daughter of Caleb Stone and Sarah Meigs. Caleb and Sarah are second cousins once removed, as Sarah is a granddaughter of Mary Cruttenden [c, below]. Caleb married second, 13 Oct 1751, Thankful Chittenden [7854.3.2.6], daughter of William Chittenden and Hannah ___. Thankful is a descendant of William Chittenden and Joanna Sheafe [I, above]. Caleb married third, 1 Dec 1760, Lucy Hall.

c.  Mary Cruttenden (also seen as Crittenden) was born around 1635 in England, and died 11 Sep 1669 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  She married in 1650 in Guilford, George Bartlett, son of Robert Bartlett (1603-1676) and Mary Warren.

Mary and George had six children, all of whom merge into our lines, listed under George.

d.  Isaac Cruttenden was born in 1643 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 13 Jul 1685 in Guilford.  He married 20 Sep 1665 in Guilford, Lydia Thompson.  Lydia was born 16 Jul 1647 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Dec 1729 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.
Three of their children marry into our family:

d1. Elizabeth Cruttenden was born 22 Sep 1670 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Mar 1701/02 in Guilford.  She married Daniel Hubbard [3926.1], son of Daniel Hubbard and Elizabeth Jordan.  Daniel was born 1 Aug 1666 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Mar 1719/20.

d2.  Deborah Cruttenden was born 23 Oct 1673 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1756 in Durham (Middlesex) Connecticut.  She married Joseph Norton [15640.6.5], son of Thomas Norton and Elizabeth Mason.  Joseph was born 6 Nov 1681 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.

d3.  Samuel Cruttenden was born 1 Nov 1675 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 12 Dec 1745 in Connecticut.  He married 8 Oct 1702, Mindwell Meigs [7816.7], daughter of John Meigs and Sarah Wilcoxson.  Mindwell was born in 1682 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 31 Mar 1762.
