Bill’s Family: Ancestors of Eldora Beahm

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

During the Revolutionary War, he was part of a committee that petitioned the Continental Congress to give Vermont equal status with the other states, but this was opposed by New Hampshire and New York. Vermont became an independent republic in 1777 (the first Republic in the Americas), and Thomas was chosen as Governor 1778-1779 and again in 1790-1791. 7854.4.1.3. Nehemiah Bushnell was born 22 Apr 1710 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married 28 Nov 1739 in Saybrook, his cousin Sarah Ingham [15688.3.4.2.1], daughter of Ebenezer Ingham (~1670-1749) and Mary Dorothy Stone (1680-1701). His father’s unexpected death left David with a large inheritance, which he used to put himself through Yale. He was at Yale at the start of the Revolutionary War, and made use of his studies for several inventions. David is best known for his creation of the “Turtle”, a submarine used (unsuccessfully) in the Revolution. He served in the Army in the Revolutionary War, and was promoted to Captain in 1781. Although he did not invent the submarine, he was the first to create one which was used in combat. He did invent the the idea of raising and lowering the submarine using water-filled ballast tanks, and was the first to use the screw propeller. David also developed underwater explosives, barrage mines, and the time bomb. Fearing retaliation by the British, he later moved to Georgia, where he lived the rest of his life as Dr. David Bush, practicing medicine and teaching.

7854.4.1.4. Lydia Bushnell was born 6 Jul 1712 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1769 in Middlesex County, Connecticut. 7854.5. Hannah Jordan was born in 1648 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1720 (some have 1697). She married 28 Jun 1666 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut, Ezbon Wakeman, son of Samuel Wakeman (1603 Eng - 1641 Bahamas) and Elizabeth ___ (1603 Eng - d. CT). Ezbon (also seen as Esbon or Ezbun) was born in 1636 in Connecticut, and died in 1683 in Connecticut. {Ezbon has a rather interesting family. His father was a merchant, and was killed by the guards at a Spanish fort in the Bahamas, where he had gone to buy cotton. Several of Ezbon’s sisters were involved in the Hartford witchcraft trials in the 1660’s: Bethia Wakeman, who married John Kelly, was one of the accusers at the 1662 trials which resulted in three executions; Elizabeth Wakeman married James Wakely, who was identified as attending coven meetings in the woods; and Hannah Wakeman, who married Francis Hackleton, was accused in 1665 of adultery, blasphemy and murder. As far as I know, these are all just in-laws and no relation to us, more’s the pity.}
Hannah and Ezbon had one child that we know of, there may be others (first cousin to us):

7854.5.1. Abigail Wakeman was born about 1668, probably in Connecticut. She married Thomas Hill. Thomas died before 1711 in Fairfield (Fairfield) Connecticut.
