15696.  David Dudley (Gen 14) was born in 1579 in Dorking (Surrey) England, and died in 1646 in Dorking.  He married 16 May 1604 in Dorking,
15697.  Joanna Arnold.  Joanna was born 1583 in Dorking (Surrey) England, and died in Dorking.
David was a wheelwright.
David and Joanna probably had several children, but the only one we know of is

15698.  Jacob Lutman (Gen 14) was born about 1572 in Surrey Co, England, and died in Surrey County.  Some sources have Luteman.  We don't have a name for his wife.
Jacob probably had several children, but the only one we know of is

7848.  William Dudley was born about 1615 in Richmond, England, and died 5 Mar  1684/83 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  He married 24 Oct 1636 in Oakley (Surrey) England,
7849.  Jane Lutman.  Jane was born in 1615 in Wysborough (Surrey) England, and died 1 May 1674 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.

 

Dudley is an old Anglo-Saxon name, supposed to derive from the personal name Dudda or Dodd, and lea = meadow or clearing.
Arnold is an old Anglo-Saxon name, coming either from a personal name or a place.
Lutman is a variant of Luttman, and could be either English or German in origin.  It is supposed to mean a small man.

 

William and Jane came to Connecticut in 1639.  Their son William was born during the voyage.  They received an initial land grant of 3 acres in Guilford, and eventually accumulated 150 acres. William was noted as Freeman, 30 Jun 1650. He was elected Townsman three times between 1653 and 1661. They were Congregational.

7848.2.  Abigail Dudley was born in 1641 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  She married 24 May 1667 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, William Hubbard [7852.8], son of George Hubbard (~1594 Eng - 1685 CT) and Mary Bishop (~1610 Eng - 1676 CT).  William was born in 1642 in Milford, Connecticut, and died Nov 1702.
Abigail and William had three children (first cousins through both parents), listed under William.

7848.1.  William Dudley was born 8 Sep 1639 at sea, and died 29 May 1701 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.  He married 4 Nov 1661 in Saybrook, Mary Roe, daughter of Hugh Roe and Abigail ___.  Mary was born about 1640 in Suffield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 23 Sep 1727 in Saybrook.  William was a Congregational Deacon, and ran a ferryboat crossing.

7848.1.10.  Daniel Dudley was born in 1680 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died Aug 1767.  He married 2 Sep 1714, Deborah Buell [7824.6.4], daughter of Samuel Buell (1663 CT - 1732 CT) and Judith Stevens (1668 CT - 1732 CT).  Deborah was born 24 Jan 1694/93 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 6 Feb 1789 in Newport (Sullivan) New Hampshire.

7848.1.10.2.  Daniel Dudley was born 29 Jul 1719 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 1 Feb 1811 in Newport, New Hampshire.  He married 4 Nov 1741 in Saybrook, Susannah Chatfield [3916.3.2], daughter of John Chatfield (1696 CT - 1753) and Abigail Arnold (b. 1701 CT).  Susannah was born 14 Mar 1723/22 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 6 Aug 1791 in Newport, New Hampshire.

7848.1.10.3.  Deborah Dudley was born 27 Mar 1725 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 12 Jul 1822.  She married 18 Oct 1748, Thomas Colton, son of Thomas Colton and Joanna Warriner.  Thomas was born 5 Oct 1719 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and died 17 Mar 1808.

7848.1.11.  Mehitabel Dudley was born about 1680 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.  She married 12 Jul 1710, Joshua Brainard, son of Daniel Brainerd (~1640 - 1715) and Hannah Spencer (b. 1640).  Joshua was born 20 Jul 1671 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 13 May 1755.
Mehitabel and Joshua had four children (second cousins to us):

7848.1.11.2.  Joshua Brainard was born 7 Nov 1712 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 24 Dec 1790.  He married 31 Mar 1737, Mehitabel Church [31338.2.7.4.4], daughter of John Church (1682 MA - 1751 CT) and Elizabeth Olmstead (1688 CT - 1749 CT).  Mehitabel was born 7 Mar 1714/13 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 23 Jul 1771.  They had seven children.

7848.1.11.4.  Lydia Brainard was born 1 Sep 1717 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut.  She married 8 Jul 1736 in Haddam, her first cousin Joshua Gates [31338.2.1.2.8], son of Thomas Gates (1664 CT - 1734 CT) and Hannah Brainard (b. 1667 CT).  Joshua was born 26 Apr 1708 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 23 Dec 1791 in Haddam.  Lydia and Joshua are related through Brainard, not through our lines.

 


 

7848.4.  Ruth Dudley was born 20 Apr 1645 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 27 Sep 1714 in Guilford.  She married 20 Jun 1664 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, John Whittlesey, son of John Whittlesey and Lydia Terry.  John was born 4 Jul 1623 in Whittlesea (Cambridge) England, and died 15 Apr 1704 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.  John came to New England in 1635, with Lords Say and Seal Company.  He ran a ferry boat crossing on Connecticut River with Ruth's brother William Dudley.

7848.4.1.  John Whittlesey was born 11 Dec 1665 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 2 Jul 1735 in Saybrook.  He married 9 May 1693, Hannah Shipman Long, daughter of Edward Shipman (~1625 Eng - 1697 CT) and Mary Chandler (1650 CT - 1704 CT).  Hannah was born 11 Sep 1665 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 6 Jan 1752 in Saybrook.  She had married previously Simon Long.

7848.4.1.4.  Ruth Whittlesey was born 24 Sep 1699 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.  She married 8 Apr 1723 in Saybrook, Josiah Dibble [15668.3.2.6], son of Josiah Dibble and Hannah Cogwell.  Josiah was born 31 Dec 1699 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1769.  They had eight children.

 

7848.4.1.5.  Martha Whittlesey was born 3 Sep 1701 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 27 Aug 1759 in Saybrook.  She married 31 Mar 1731 in Saybrook, Samuel Kirtland, son of John Kirtland (1659 MA - 1716 CT) and Lydia Pratt (1659 CT - 1730 CT).  Samuel was born 19 Jan 1699/98 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 11 Feb 1760 in Saybrook.  They had six children.

7848.4.6.4.  Lois Whittlesey was born 27 Sep 1712 in Wethersfield, Connecticut.

 

7848.4.6.5.  Josiah Whittlesey was born 17 Feb 1714/13 in Wethersfield, Connecticut.  He married Elizabeth Jackson.

 

7848.4.6.6.  Mehitabel Whittlesey was born 23 Jul 1716 in Wethersfield, Connecticut.

 

7848.4.7.  David Whittlesey was born 28 Jun 1677 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.  Some have his death as 18 Feb 1767, and others have 18 Feb 1687/86 in Saybrook, age 9.  Perhaps there were two sons named David?

 

7848.4.8.  Eliphalet Whittlesey was born 24 Jul 1679 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.  He married 1 Dec 1702 in Saybrook, Mary Pratt.  Mary was born 24 May 1677 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 22 Mar 1758.  {Some have her as the daughter of John Pratt and Sarah Jones, but that placement has conflicting birth dates with their other children.  Most sources have John & Sarah's Mary as born 1688.}  They moved to Newington, Connecticut in 1707.
Eliphalet and Mary had three children (second cousins to us):

 

7848.4.8.1.  Mary Whittlesey was born 1 Oct 1703 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.  She married 2 Jul 1724, Ebenezer Smith, son of Jonathan Smith and Mary Bird.  Ebenezer was born 2 Sep 1702 in Farmington (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 12 Feb 1763 in W. Hartford, Connecticut.  They had three children.

 

7848.4.8.2.  Hannah Whittlesey was born 13 May 1711 in Newington, Connecticut, and died 26 Jun 1768 in Westbrook, Connecticut.  She married 1 Aug 1745 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, Hezekiah Post [7854.1.4.3], son of James Post and Sarah Douglas.  Hezekiah was born 23 Sep 1710 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 26 May 1781 in Westbrook, Connecticut.
Hannah and Hezekiah had several children, of which we list one (Hezekiah Jr.) under Hezekiah.

 

7848.4.8.3.  Eliphalet Whittlesey was born 10 May 1714 in Newington, Connecticut, and died 12 Jul 1786 in Washington, Connecticut.  He married 16 Dec 1736 in Newington, Dorothy Kellogg, daughter of Martin Kellogg and Dorothy Chester.  Dorothy was born 4 Dec 1716 in Newington, Connecticut, and died 14 Apr 1772 in Washington, Connecticut.  They had eleven children.

 

7848.4.9.  Ruth Whittlesey was born 23 Apr 1681 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in Wethersfield, Connecticut.

 

7848.4.10.  Sarah Whittlesey was born 28 May 1683 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.

 

7848.4.11.  Samuel Whittlesey was born in 1686 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 15 Aug 1752.  He married 1 Jul 1712, Sarah Chauncey, daughter of Rev Nathaniel Chauncey (1639 CT - 1685 MA) and Abigail Strong (1645 CT - 1704 MA).  Sarah was born 15 Sep 1683 in Hatfield, Massachusetts, and died Oct 1767 in Wallingford, Connecticut.
Samuel graduated Yale in 1705, and was a Congregational Minister.  He must have done some work other than minister, since at his death he is said to have left an estate of 22,000 pounds (about $4 million today).
Samuel and Sarah had eight children (second cousins to us):

 

7848.4.11.1.  Samuel Whittlesey was born 10 Jul 1713 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and died 22 Oct 1768 in Milford, Connecticut.  He married 21 Sep 1743, Susannah Newton, daughter of Roger Newton and Susannah Bryan.  Susannah was born 14 Jan 1716/15 in Milford, Connecticut, and died 10 May 1803.  Samuel graduated from Yale n 1729, and was a pastor and college instructor at Yale and Harvard.

 

7848.4.11.2.  Lois Whittlesey was born 28 Nov 1714 in Wallingford, Connecticut.  She married 2 Jan 1734, Col Elihu Hall, son of John Hall (1670 CT - 1730 CT) and Mary Lyman (1668 CT - 1740 CT).  Elihu's brother Samuel married into Rita's side of the family [SPENCER 5632.2.1.1.3 Ann Law].  Elihu was born 7 Feb 1714 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and died 1786 in London, England.  They had nine children.

 

7848.4.11.3.  Chauncey Whittlesey was born 8 Oct 1717 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and died 24 Jul 1787 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut.  He married first, Sep 1745, Elizabeth Whiting, daughter of Joseph Whiting and Hannah Trowbridge.  Elizabeth was born 8 Jun 1717 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 17 Oct 1751 in New Haven.  Chauncey and Elizabeth had three children.
Chauncey married second, about 1760, Martha Newton.  Chauncey and Martha had one child.

 

7848.4.11.4.  Sarah Whittlesey was born 19 Jan 1720 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and died 23 Aug 1725 in Wallingford, age 5.

 

7848.4.11.5.  Elisha Whittlesey was born 19 Oct 1721 in Wallingford, Connecticut.  He married 8 Apr 1754 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, Susannah Hall, daughter of John Hall (1692 - 1773) and Mary Street (1697 - 1778), and granddaughter of John Hall and Mary Lyman.  Susannah was born 9 Apr 1726 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and died 19 Oct 1768 in Wallingford.  Her uncle Elihu married Elisha's sister Lois, and her uncle Samuel married into Rita's side of the family [SPENCER 5632.2.1.1.3 Ann Law].  Elisha and Susannah had eight children.

 

7848.4.11.6.  Charles Whittlesey was born 16 Jan 1723 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and died 25 Feb 1808.  He married 13 Jun 1751, Lucy Hall [SPENCER 5632.2.1.1.3.4], daughter of Samuel Hall and Ann Elliott Law.  Lucy is a cousin on Rita's side through the Kilburn line.  She was born 11 Sep 1730 (some have 29 Nov 1735) in Cheshire (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 19 Oct 1768. Charles was an attorney.

 

7848.4.11.7.  Sarah Whittlesey was born 20 Oct 1726 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and died 2 Nov 1741 in Wallingford.

 

7848.4.11.8.  Katherine Whittlesey was born 26 Dec 1728 in Wallingford, Connecticut.  She married about 1755, Rev James Dana, D.D., son of Caleb Dana (1697 MA - 1769 MA) and Phebe Chandler (1707 MA - 1772 MA).  They were Congregational. James graduated Harvard in 1753.  He received his Doctor of Divinity and was ordained in Oct 1758, and became the Pastor of the Congregational Church of Wallingford.  He was considered a liberal ("New-Light") and excommunicated by the New Haven ("Old-light") council. James and others then formed their own church council, which was eventually reconciled to the New Haven Council in 1772.  James was a major supporter of the American Revolution.

7848.4.11.8.1.  Samuel Whittlesey Dana was born 13 Feb 1760 in Wallingford, Connecticut, and died 21 Jul 1830.  He graduated Yale in 1775 and was a lawyer.  Samuel served in the U.S. Congress (Federalist) 1797-1810, and the U.S. Senate 1810-1820.

 


 

7848.5.  Deborah Dudley was born 20 Sep 1647 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died Oct 1681.    She married first, Jun 1671 at Guilford, Ebenezer Thompson.  Ebenezer was born in 1647, and died May 1674 in Guilford.  Deborah had a 2-year old son and was three months pregnant when Ebenezer died.  Deborah married second, in 1676 at Stonington (New London) Connecticut, Thomas Scranton.  Thomas was born in 1643, and died in Feb 1711/10.  There were no known children from the second marriage.  We don't know what became of the children, who were 7 and 9 years old when their mother died.

7848.5.1.  Jabez Thompson was born 16 Oct 1672 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.

 

7848.5.2.  John Thompson was born Nov 1674 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.
