Richard Hubbell and Elizabeth Gaylord

7826. Richard Hubbell was born in 1627 in Worcestershire, England, and died 23 Oct 1699 in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Some have his death in Pequonnock (later Stratfield), others have it as Stratford Township, or Bridgeport in Stratford Twp -- all of these are the same place, present-day Bridgeport. He is a son of Richard Hubbell [15652] and Sarah Wakeman [15653]. Richard married three times, and had children from each marriage.

Richard married first, about 1652 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, Elizabeth Meigs [15632.2], daughter of John Meigs and Thomasine Fry. Elizabeth was born about 1631 in England, and died in 1664 in Pequonnock (present-day Stratfield) (Fairfield) Connecticut. Four of her siblings are direct ancestors to us; it’s possible that if she had not died she would also be our ancestor.

7827. Elizabeth Gaylord. Elizabeth was born 4 Oct 1647 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1688. She is a daughter of Samuel Gaylord [15654] and Elizabeth Hull [15655].

Richard married third, in 1688, Abigail Prudden, widow of Joseph Walker. She brought six children from her first marriage.

Richard came to New Haven, Connecticut sometime before 1648, probably with an uncle. He was a planter in Guilford by 1654, and had moved to Fairfield by 1664. A genealogy forum note by Rich Houghton has some detailednotes on Richard Hubbell’s life.

There are two sons each named James, Samuel, and John, from different marriages. Most of the web sources I have seen list both sets, but fail to notice or mention the overlap of children with the same name living at the same time.

7826.5. James Hubbell was born about 1658 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died in 1762. He was apparently 104 at death, which I would suspect to be an error, but several books mention this as his correct age.

7826.7. Ebenezer Hubbell was born 16 Nov 1659 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died in 1698 in New London (New London) Connecticut (some have his death as 5 Jun 1710). He married Jun 1692 in Stratford, his cousin Mary Harris [31266.1.3.7], daughter of Gabriel Harris (1629-1684) and Mary Elizabeth Abbott (1632-1702). Mary was born 21 May 1667 in New London (New London) Connecticut, and died 27 Jan 1724 in New London. After Ebenezer died, Mary married in 1703 Ebenezer Griffin.

Hubbell) was born in 1652 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1690 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut (some have his death in Albany, New York). He married about 1680 Patience Nichols, daughter of Isaac Nichols and Margaret Washburn. Patience was born 2 Feb 1659/60 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died in 1734. After John’s death, Patience married Samuel Hawley, son of Joseph Hawley and Catherine Birdseye. Patience had six children from the second marriage, half-siblings to our cousins listed here, and one of them (Nathaniel) will marry back into our family, 15666.2.7.5 Mary Ufford.

She married 27 Nov 1700 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, John Glover, son of John Glover and Joanna Daniel. John was born 20 Nov 1674 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 30 Jun 1752 in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut. After Margery died, John married 14 Jul 1707, Bethia Beach, daughter of Benjamin each and Mary Peacock.

7826.1.1.2?. Henry Glover? He is listed as a son in one website, although he conflicts with the death date for Margery seen in most sources. Henry was born on 8 Oct 1703, and died 12 Feb 1784.

He married 11 Dec 1707, Abigail Thompson, daughter of William Thompson and Joanna Daniel. Abigail was born 18 Oct 1685 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, and died on 1 Apr 1747.

7826.1.2.2. Abigail Hubbell was born 19 Sep 1709 in Fairfield (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died in 1787. She married first, about 1730, David Hurd. Abigail married second, about 1750, Thomas Mallory. Thomas was born 11 Jan 1685 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 21 Jul 1783.

7826.1.2.3. John Hubbell was born about 1710 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 7 May 1758 in Huntington (Fairfield) Connecticut. He married about 1739 Hannah Wheeler, daughter of Robert Wheeler (1686 CT - 1753 CT) and Sarah Bennett (d. 1773). Hannah was born 19 Nov 1719 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 2 Nov 1797 in Fairfield (Fairfield) Connecticut.

Martha is a second cousin to Bill’s side, and is also a third cousin to Rita’s side of the family -- she could also be numbered as SPENCER 5632.8.1.7.1, descending from the Kilbourne branch.

7826.2.1.2. Peter Hubbell was born 15 Apr 1715 in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut. He married in 1737, Hephzibah Botsford, daughter of John Botsford (1681-1745) and Hephzibah Camp. Hephzibah was born in 1716 (baptized 30 Jun 1716) in Bridgeport (Fairfield) Connecticut (some have 1717 birth).

7826.2.1.3. Ezra Hubbell was born 18 Feb 1716/17 in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died about 1758. He married his second cousin Katharine Hubbell [7826.4.5.3], daughter of Ephraim Hubbell and Abigail Bradley, below.

7826.2.1.4. Sarah Hubbell was born 27 Feb 1718/19 in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut. She married Alexander Bryan.

7826.2.1.5. Jedediah Hubbell was born 22 Aug 1720 in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 14 Aug 1819. He married 20 Aug 1748, Abigail Northrup. Abigail was born probably around 1720 and died sometime before 1759. Jedediah married 18 Oct 1759, Susannah Hickock. Susannah was born probably around 1720 and died sometime before 1782. Jedediah married 20 Nov 1782, Eunice Johnson. Eunice was born probably around 1720 and died in 1806. Jedediah is also listed as also marrying Mary Hurlbut and Chloe Bemen, but with no dates given.

7826.2.1.6. Matthew Hubbell was born 4 Sep 1723 probably in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut. He married 6 Dec 1743, Abiah Wolcott, daughter of Gideon Wolcott. Abiah was born 4 Sep 1723 in Bridgeport (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 18 Dec 1797 in Lanesborough (Berkshire) Massachusetts. The conicidence of birth dates for Matthew and Abiah is quite possibly a copying error, but it is given thus in most web sources, and I have seen no other date.

7826.2.2.3. Timothy Titherton Hubbell was born about 1732 in Weston (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 7 Aug 1812 in Weston. He married in 1760 in Weston, Ann Bennett [15628.2.2.5.1.4], daughter of William Bennett and Hannah Seeley. Ann was born Nov 1738 and died sometime before 1778.

7826.2.2.4. Abijah Hubbell was born in 1737 in Fairfield Co, Connecticut, and died in 1822 in Durham (Quebec) Canada. He married Hannah White.

7826.2.3. Elizabeth Hubbell was born 23 Oct 1689 in Fairfield Co, Connecticut. She married 7 Jan 1712/13 in Stratfield (Fairfield) Connecticut, Nathan Beardsley, son of Samuel Beardsley (1636-1706) and Abigail Clark (1641-1727). Nathan was born 7 Oct 1686 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 6 Aug 1750 in Stratford.

She married 14 Apr 1743 in New Milford (Litchfield) Connecticut, Abraham Dayton, son of Caleb Dayton and Mary Foote. Abraham was born 18 Aug 1719 in New Milford (Litchfield) Connecticut, and died 10 Aug 1780 in New Milford.

7826.2.3.7. Elnathan Beardsley was born 17 Aug 1728, and died 19 Feb 1729, age 6 months.

7826.2.3.8. Reuben Beardsley was born 6 Jan 1729/30, and died in 1754 in New Milford (Litchfield) Connecticut.

7826.2.4. Martha Hubbell was born probably around 1690 in Fairfield Co, Connecticut. Some websites list a marriage to John Wakeman, but this is apparently a confusion with her aunt Martha 7826.9.

7826.2.5. Jonathan Hubbell was born 25 Mar 1692 in Fairfield Co, Connecticut, and died 6 Sep 1766 in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut. He married on 18 Nov 1713 in Fairfield County, Peaceable Silliman. Some have her parents Daniel Silliman and Abigail Ogden, others say this is incorrect.
Jonathan and Peaceable had twelve children (second cousins to us):

7826.2.5.1. Richard Hubbell was born in 1714 probably in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and died 16 Apr 1777 in Plymouth, Connecticut. He married on 29 Nov 1749 in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut, Jedidah Scidmore.

7826.2.5.2. Ithamar Hubbell was born in 1718 in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 14 Dec 1760 in Sheffield, Massachusetts. He married Mabel Dewey, daughter of Samuel Dewey and Rebecca Ashley. Mabel was born 22 May 1718 in Massachusetts, and died 28 Dec 1760 in Sheffield, Massachusetts. Ithamar served in the French and Indian War.
Ithamar and Mabel both died young, leaving seven children under 18.

7826.2.5.3. Ichabod Hubbell was born in 1721probably in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and died in 1808. Icahbod was married and had children, but we don’t have the name of his wife. He may possibly be the Ichabod Hubbell who maried Esther Wakelee about 1751, but cannot say for certain.

7826.2.5.4. Beulah Hubbell was born probably in the 1720s probably in Fairfield County, Connecticut. She married 18 Dec 1754, John Griffin. John was born about 1726 and died 5 May 1777. Beulah also married Enoch Lacy, but we have no dates for him and don’t know if this was Beulah’s first or second marriage.

7826.2.5.5. Jephtha Hubbell was born probably in the 1720s in Newtown (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died about 1794 in Newtown. He married on 30 May 1757 in Newtown, Experience Prindle.
Jephtha served in the French and Indian War, and again in the Revolutionary War.
Their son Ammon (1759-1848) was a Loyalist, served in the British Army in the Revolutionary War, and moved to New Brunswick in 1783.

7826.2.5.6. Jemima Hubbell was born about 1730 probably in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and died 4 Jun 1818 in Brookfield (Fairfield) Connecticut. She married first, about 1752, Gershom Bostwick, son of Ebenezer Bostwick and Rebecca Bunnell. Gershom was born about 1727 in Brookfield (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died in 1760 in Brookfield. Jemima married second, about 1761, Joseph Smith, son of Joseph Smith and Mary Clark. Joseph was born in 1730 in Milford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1810 in Milford.

Parruck served in the Revolutionary War. They were living in Danbury Connecticut at the start of the war. The British burned the town in Apr 1777, and the family moved to New Fairfield. Parruck and his son Gideon both enlisted a few weeks later.

7826.12.1.4. Hannah Hubbell was born 12 Nov 1732 in Fairfield Co, Connecticut, and died sometime before 1777. She married 14 Jun 1750, Ebenezer Beers.

7826.12.1.5. Sarah Hubbell was born 5 Aug 1734 in Fairfield Co, Connecticut, and died in childhood, sometime before 1750.

Andrew married second, 2 Dec 1736, Mary Welles. Mary was born 25 Apr 1714 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died sometime after 1777.

7826.12.1.9. Sarah Hubbell was born 18 Nov 1741 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut.

7826.12.1.10. Matthew Hubbell was born 17 Apr 1745 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 12 Apr 1812 in Huntington (Fairfield) Connecticut. He married in 1767, his cousin Abigail Burton, daughter of Solomon Burton and Ruth Summers. Abigail was born 26 Oct 1748 in Redding (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 20 Feb 1812 in Easton (Fairfield) Connecticut. Matthew and Abigail are second cousins through Summers, outside our lines.

7826.12.1.11. Abiah Hubbell was born about 1747 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut. She married Bert Woodcock.

7826.12.1.12. Mary Hubbell was born in May 1749 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut. She married 17 Dec 1767, Isaiah Northrup, son of Job Northrup and Mabel ___. Isaiah was born 3 Apr 1746 in Monroe (Fairfield) Connecticut.

7826.12.1.13. Rhoda Hubbell was born about 1750 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut. She married 4 Jan 1773, her second cousin Daniel Bennett [7826.4.9.8], son of James Bennett and Tabitha Hubbell, above.

7826.12.2. Abiah Hubbell was born 10 Aug 1708 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut.

7826.12.3. Sarah Hubbell was born 12 Sep 1711 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut.

7826.12.4. Elnathan Hubbell was born 22 Sep 1717 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 21 Jul 1788 in Bennington (Bennington) Vermont. He married twice, and had children from both marriages.
Elnathan married first, Mehitabel Sherwood, daughter of Lemuel Sherwood (1687-1732) and Ann Wheeler (some have Experience Wheeler). Mehitabel was born 21 Feb 1719 in Stratfield (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 24 Sep 1770 in Bennington (Bennington) Vermont.
Elnathan and Mehitabel had nine children (second cousins to us):

7826.12.4.1. Elnathan Hubbell was born 26 Jan 1742 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 9 Mar 1801. He married Isabella Breakenridge. Isabella was born 3 Nov 1749 in Colrain (Franklin) Massachusetts, and died 4 Dec 1809.

7826.12.4.2. Mehitabel Hubbell was born in 1745 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut. She married 23 Sep 1762, Samuel Brinsmade. I suspect he may be the son of Zachariah Brinsmade and Sarah Cobbett, which places his birth at 31 Mar 1720. If that is the correct Samuel, he also has children from a prior marriage.

7826.12.4.3. Patience Hubbell was born in 1747 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut.

7826.12.4.4. Experience Hubbell was born 7 Sep 1749 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 25 Apr 1774 in Bennington (Bennington) Vermont. She married Nathaniel Holmes.

7826.12.4.5. Huldah Hubbell was born 20 May 1752 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died in 1847. She married in 1777 in Bennington (Bennington) Vermont, John Stewart, son of Samuel Stuart/Stewart (1718 Scot - d. MA) and Alice Atchison. John was born in 1745 in Londonderry (Rockingham) New Hampshire, and died in 1821. He is said to have served in the French and Indian War as a member of Rogers Rangers (I don’t think I believe that, he seems too young), and again in the Revolutionary War.

7826.12.4.6. Lemuel Hubbell was born 2 Apr 1755 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 11 Apr 1845 in Burlington Flats (Ostego) New York. He married Rebecca Clark. Rebecca was born 3 Aug 1754, and died 13 Feb 1837.
Lemuel served in the Revolutionary War.

7826.12.4.7. Aaron Hubbell was born 18 Sep 1757 in Trumbull (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 26 Dec 1844 in Bennington (Bennington) Vermont. He married first, 27 Jun 1782, Sarah Dewey, daughter of Elijah Dewey (1744-1818) and Eunice Brush. Sarah was born in 1765 and died 18 Apr 1797 in Bennington (Bennington) Vermont. Aaron married second, 11 Mar 1798, Lucinda Moody. Lucinda was born 15 Jan 1770, and died 3 Oct 1864 in Sharon (Litchfield) Connecticut.

7826.12.4.8. Beulah Hubbell was born 25 May 1760 in Trumbull (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died in childhood.

7826.12.4.9. Bildad Hubbell was born 22 Aug 1767 in Trumbull (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 3 Dec 1840 in Cambridge (Lamoille) Vermont. He married (probably first, but we have no dates for the marriage or for her death), Hannah ___. Bildad married second, 24 Feb 1793, Polly Fay, daughter of Jonas Fay (1737-1818) and Sarah Fassett (1760- ). Polly was born 12 Jun 1765 in Hardwick (Worcester) Massachusetts, and died sometime before 1816. Bildad married third, 5 Oct 1817 in Burlington, Vermont, Susannah Follett.

Elnathan married second, 4 May 1775 in Bennington (Bennington) Vermont, Abigail Higgins, widow of (Simon?) Griffin. She is probably a daughter of Elisha Higgins and Hannah Doane, but we have no proof of this.

7826.12.4.10. Almerinus Hubbell was born 2 Jan 1776 in Schaghticoke (Rensselaer) New York, and died 12 Apr 1822 in Berne (Albany) New York. He married on 17 Dec 1797 in New York, Maria Elizabeth Weidman, daughter of Peter Weidman and Elizabeth Hochstrasser. Maria was born 8 Aug 1778, and died on 28 Aug 1847. They were married in a Dutch Reformed Church.

7826.12.4.11. Experience Hubbell was born 4 Mar 1779 in Schaghticoke (Rensselaer) New York. She married Peter Dietz.

7826.12.5. Patience Hubbell was born 8 Apr 1722 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 22 Dec 1760 in Stratford. She married 4 Dec 1740 in Stratford, Nathan Nichols, son of Joseph Nichols (1685 CT - 1742 CT) and Mary Curtis (1682 CT - 1767 CT). Nathan was born 1 Dec 1709 in Trumbull (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died in 1789 in Trumbull.
Patience and Nathan had two children that we know of, there may be others (second cousins to us):

7826.12.5.1. Abijah Nichols was born about 1750 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died sometime before May 1782 in Stratford. He married his cousin Anna Shelton [7826.1.2.1.10] (also seen spelled Anah Shelton), daughter of Mary Hubbell and Daniel Shelton. Anna was born in 1747 and died sometime after 1782.

7826.12.5.2. Patience Nichols was born 24 Jan 1752 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 5 May 1844. She married 16 Jun 1779, Andrew Curtis, son of Jonathan Curtis and Eunice Summer. Andrew was born 18 Jul 1756 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 20 Jul 1840.

7826.15. John Hubbell was born Apr 1691 in Fairfield Co, Connecticut, and died 8 Apr 1774 in Stratfield (Fairfield) Connecticut. He married 6 Nov 1711 in Stratfield, Ann Welles, daughter of Samuel Welles and Abigail Wheeler. Ann was born in Bridgeport (Fairfield) Connecticut.

7826.15.1.2. Rebecca Treadwell was born in 1747 in Stratfield (Fairfield) Connecticut. She married about 1773 in Fairfield Co, Connecticut, Nehemiah Knapp, son of John Knapp. Nehemiah was born 9 Nov 1740 in Fairfield (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 14 Nov 1786 in Argyle (Washington) New York.

7826.15.1.3. David Treadwell was born in 1749 in Stratfield (Fairfield) Connecticut.
