John Norton and Hannah Stone

7820. John Norton was born 15 Feb 1637/38 in England, and died 5 Mar 1703/04 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut. He is a son of Thomas Norton [15640] and Grace Wells [15641]. John married first, in 1664,

7821. Hannah Stone. Hannah was born in 1644 and died sometime before 1690. She is a daughter of William Stone [7844] and Hannah ___ [7845].

John married second, about 1690, Elizabeth Hubbard [7852.6], daughter of George Hubbard and Mary Bishop. Elizabeth was born in 1638 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died in 1710.

There is not complete agreement on all of this. Some web sources have Hannah’s death as 8 Mar 1704, with the second marriage to Elizabeth being later or omitted entirely. Some have Hannah’s death as 1712, with Elizabeth Hubbard being the first wife.

Hannah was born 12 Apr 1671 in Wethersfield (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 22 Oct 1739. Some sources list her as Hannah Peck.

He married first, probably around 1725, Elizabeth Robinson [7850.1.5], daughter of Thomas Robinson and Sarah Graves. Elizabeth was born in 1701 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1728. We don’t know of any children from this first marriage; it is likely that Elizabeth died in childbirth.
John married second, in 1729, Mary. Her last name is uncertain. Some have her as Mary Groton, daughter of John Groton. Others list her as Mary Morgan, daughter of John Morgan, and coming from the town of Groton.

This is possible, but we also have him married to Sarah Kelsey (1708-1786). This scenario requires either that Sarah Norton died before 1728 or, as some sources list Sarah Kelsey’s death as 1764, the marriage to Sarah Norton might be after 1764.

Ann was born 12 Aug 1741 and died 31 Mar 1817. Ann and James are second cousins once removed, both being descended from George Bartlett and Mary Cruttenden.

She married in 1772, her cousin Solomon Leete [7844.1.3.8.1], son of Solomon Leete (1722-1803) and Zipporah Stone (1720-1800). Solomon was born 3 Dec 1746, and died about 1822 in Greenville (Greene) New York. Hannah and Solomon are third cousins, both descending from 7844 William Stone and Hannah ___.

7820.6.4. Reuben Norton was born 6 Apr 1711, and died 28 Nov 1796. He married 7 Sep 1738, Hannah Hooker, daughter of Daniel Hooker and Sarah Stanley. Hannah was born about 1715 and died 8 May 1797. A note on the death places of some of their children: East Guilford was incorporated as Madison in 1826.

Ichabod was born 27 May 1753 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 18 Aug 1777. They were Congregational. His age and date of death suggests Ichabod may have been in the Revolutionary War, but we have seen nothing for him. His father and grandmother also died young.

He married 25 Mar 1787, Mary Griffing [SPENCER 5952.1.4.6.3.1], daughter of Samuel Griffing and Martha Vail. Mary (also seen as Mary Griffin) was born on 20 Apr 1758, and died 31 Dec 1826. She is a fourth cousin on Rita’s side of the family (Vail branch), and she is also a fourth cousin on Bill’s side, being a granddaughter of 15620.6.6.5 Hannah Landon.

7820.6.7. Timothy Norton was born 3 Feb 1721, and died 1 Oct 1793. He married in 1748, Elizabeth Ward [7822.1.2.2], daughter of Andrew Ward (1695-1779) and Elizabeth Fowler (1694-1794). Elizabeth was born 19 Nov 1725, and died 9 Sep 1787.

She married on 16 Jan 1702, her cousin Ebenezer Stone [15688.3.3.2], son of Nathaniel Stone (1648-1709) and Mary Bartlett (1655-1724). Ebenezer was born on 21 Aug 1676, and died 18 Aug 1761. Ebenezer and Hannah are second cousins, both descending from 15688 Samuel Stone.

He married 8 Apr 1787 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, his cousin Anna Evarts [7810.2.1.3.6], daughter of Eleazer Evarts (1716-1804) and Hannah Scranton (1716-1791). Anna was born 4 Nov 1753 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 4 Aug 1815. Seth and Anna are fourth cousins, both descending from 15620 John Bishop and Anne Stevens.

7820.7.5.5. William Stone was born 10 Jul 1759, and died in 1840. He married in 1788, Thamsen Graves, daughter of Ebenezer Graves and Mary Willard. Thamsen was born 21 Feb 1764. William graduated from Yale in ministry in 1786.

7820.7.5.6. Stephen Stone was born 15 Apr 1762, and died 24 Jun 1782, age 20.

7820.8. Mary Norton was born about 1680 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 8 Oct 1749 in Guilford. She married 12 Dec 1699, John Scranton, son of John Scranton (1641-1703) and Mary Seward (1652-1684). John was born in 1676 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 31 Mar 1758 in Guilford.
John is not directly related to us, but he is a half-brother to the children of 7810.4 Elizabeth Bishop, who was the third wife of his father.

Francis was born 17 Nov 1697 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 15 Jun 1790 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. Mary and Francis are second cousins, both being descended from John Scranton and Joanna ___ (outside our lines). There is not complete agreement on this family, some sources have Mary’s husband as Benjamin Bushnell.

7820.8.1.2. Sarah Bushnell was born in 1732 in Westbrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. She married Jedidiah Kelsey [7838.1.1.2.3], son of Ephraim Kelsey (1701-1780) and Jemima Kelsey (1701-1775). Jedidiah was born 29 Dec 1728, and died 26 Mar 1796.

7820.8.2. John Scranton was born 14 Apr 1703 probably in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1738. He drowned in the Hammonassett River near East Guilford.

7820.8.3. Josiah Scranton was born 19 Jul 1705 probably in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 8 Sep 1751. He married Mary Dickinson, daughter of Azariah Dickinson and Hannah Spencer. Mary was born about 1715 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 5 Sep 1783.

7820.8.3.5. John Scranton was born about 1742 probably in Connecticut, and died 22 Aug 1832. He married Anna Blatchley [3904.7.1.7], daughter of Moses Blatchley (1722 - 1791) and Huldah Munger (1721-1765). Anna was born 19 Jan 1756 in Connecticut, and died 27 Dec 1826.

7820.8.6.2. Josiah Chittenden was born 13 Nov 1739 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 10 Dec 1759. He served in the French and Indian War. He took part in the capture of the fort at Crown Point, New York from the French, but died upon his return home.

7820.8.6.3. Simeon Chittenden was born 13 Apr 1742 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 22 Sep 1812. He married 15 Dec 1773, his cousin Sarah Dudley [3924.5.5.2], daughter of Selah Dudley and Rachel Stone. Sarah was born 3 Dec 1746 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 12 Mar 1841 in North Guilford. Simeon and Sarah are second cousins once removed, both being descended from 7820 John Norton and Hannah Stone. They had nine children.

7820.8.6.4. Submit Chittenden was born 9 Dec 1744 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 11 Mar 1824 in Guilford. She married 18 Feb 1768, William Rossiter, son of Theophilus Rossiter (1696-1773) and Abigail Pearson (1705-1790). William was born 7 Feb 1740 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 28 Dec 1820 in North Guilford, Connecticut. Submit and William might be cousins through Sherman, but the relation is unknown.

7820.8.6.5. Mary Chittenden was born 12 Oct 1747 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 21 Jan 1821. She married 9 Jun 1768 in North Guilford, her cousin Augustus Collins, son of Daniel Collins and Lois Cornwall. Augustus was born 7 Aug 1743 and died 30 Apr 1814. He is commonly said to have been a general, but we haven’t found any details on this. Augustus and Mary are third cousins, both being descended from William Chittenden and Joanna Sheafe. They had nine children.

7820.8.6.6. Abel Chittenden was born 2 Nov 1750 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 1 Sep 1770 in Guilford, age 20. Abel completed two years at Yale, but died before graduating.

7820.8.6.7. David Chittenden was born in 1755 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 24 Mar 1776. His age and date of death suggest possible Revolutionary War, but we have no information on him.

7820.8.7. Noah Scranton was born 20 Jan 1714/15 probably in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 4 Dec 1760. He married 28 Jul 1743, Esther Bradley [7822.4.2.3], daughter of Stephen Bradley (1696-1782) and Jemima Cornwall (1700-1787). Esther was born 2 Nov 1724 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 28 Feb 1792.
One source (Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont, Hiram Carleton, 1903) has Noah as serving in Revolutionary War, but most have him dying in 1760 -- and even if alive, he would be in his 60’s. It was more likely to have been his son Noah, but we have not seen any other references to this. Other than one daughter, we don’t see any direct evidence that any of the family moved to Vermont.

7820.8.7.1. Noah Scranton was born 4 Feb 1744, and died 24 Jul 1823. He married Sally Bradley, daughter of Timothy Bradley. Sally was born about 1767 and died 17 Feb 1835 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. Noah was said to have made a voyage around the world.

7820.8.7.2. Pierce Scranton was born 4 Jul 1745, and died 22 Jul 1747, age 2.

7820.8.7.3. Olive Scranton was born 17 Feb 1747, and died 2 Jan 1755, age 7.

7820.8.7.4. Pierce Scranton was born 3 Dec 1748, and died 30 Sep 1751, age 2.

7820.8.7.5. Job Scranton was born 28 Feb 1750. He married Mehitabel ___.

7820.8.7.6. Hannah Scranton was born 27 Oct 1752, and died 20 Mar 1833. She married in 1775, Reuben Hill. Reuben was born 7 Mar 1746 in Connecticut, and died 23 Sep 1835 in Connecticut. He is said to have served in the Revolutionary War in the militia.

7820.8.7.7. Lois Scranton was born 14 Jun 1754, and died 23 Nov 1835. She married 24 Nov 1774 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, Josiah Treat Deming, son of Treat Deming (1727 CT - 1773 CT) and Mary Bowen. Josiah was born 17 Oct 1752 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 21 Feb 1836 in Guilford.

7820.8.7.8. Olive Scranton was born 22 Jan 1757. She married Ezra Hill, son of Reuben Hill. They moved to Vermont in 1815.

7820.8.7.9. Benjamin Scranton was born in 1759.

7820.8.8. Ichabod Scranton was born 19 Feb 1717 probably in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 1 Dec 1760. He married Chloe Fowler [3926.1.2.2], daughter of Abraham Fowler (1683-1754) and Elizabeth Hubbard (1694-1770). Chloe was born Mar 1723, and died 3 Dec 1791.
Ichabod served in the French and Indian War, supposedly a Captain. He went on expeditions to Louisburg, Cape Breton, and Ticonderoga, New York. He died of smallpox caught on the trip from Ticonderoga.

7820.8.8.3. Theophilus Scranton was born 1 Dec 1751, and died 10 Feb 1827. He married Abigail Lee, daughter of Jonathan Lee and Mary ___.

7820.8.8.4. Abraham Scranton was born 10 Sep 1754, and died 24 Feb 1844. He married 26 Nov 1778, his cousin Lucy Stone [7810.2.1.7.4], daughter of Sarah Scranton and Thomas Stone. Lucy was born 9 Mar 1757, and died 1 Apr 1854. Lucy and Abraham are third cousins, both being descended from John Scranton and Joanna, outside our lines. They are also third cousins through George Bartlett and Mary Cruttenden, again outside our family lines. They are also fourth cousins, through 15688 Samuel Stone. And they are fourth cousins once removed, both descending (several times over, in Abraham’s case) from 15620 John Bishop and Anne Stevens.
Abraham enlisted in the militia in 1770. He served throughout the entire Revolutionary War, and was said to have been at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

7820.8.8.5. Ichabod Scranton was born 10 Dec 1757, and died 24 May 1792.

7820.8.9. Hannah Scranton was born 3 Mar 1718 probably in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 10 Jan 1783 in East Guilford. Nathaniel was born 4 Nov 1716 in Bolton (Tolland) Connecticut, and died 4 Mar 1804 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.
