Stephen Hand [Gen 13, son of 15624 (=15636) John Hand & Alice Gransden]
Rebecca Bushnell [daughter of 15638 William Bushnell & Rebecca Chapman]
Almost all of our information on this family is from secondary website sources; I am presenting what we have found, but cannot say anything about the accuracy of the information. There are numerous and obvious problems with the mother and the birth dates of Stephen's children.
7818 (and 7812). Stephen Hand was born 15 Oct 1637 in Tonbridge (Kent) England, and died 15 Apr 1693 in East Hampton (Long Island) New York. Stephen apparently had two marriages, and it seems that both marriages probably produced a direct line.
He probably married first, Sarah Stratton [7813]. Since this produces a direct line to us, and Sarah has her own ancestor line, I put this marriage on its own page. There are a lot of problems concerning when Sarah died, and which children go with which marriage, or whether there even was a second marriage. See the notes on Sarah's family page.
Stephen probably married second,
7819. Rebecca Bushnell. Rebecca was born 5 Oct 1646 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 24 Oct 1726 in Middlesex Co, Connecticut. Rebecca is the sister-in-law of Stephen's first wife: Rebecca's brother William married Sarah's sister Rebecca. This may be the source of confusion which causes some sources to place Rebecca as Sarah's sister.
Stephen and Rebecca are thought to have had five children (note, child #1 of Rebecca is actually #5 for Stephen):
7818.5. Alice Hand (1671 NY - d. CT) had descendants and is expanded below.
7818.6. Elizabeth Hand (1672 NY - 1711 NY) had descendants and is expanded below.
7818.7. Rebecca Hand [3909] (~1670 NY - 1719) and John Meigs are direct ancestors, separate page.
7818.8. Sarah Hand (1674 NY - 1735) had descendants and is expanded below.
7818.9. Esther Hand was born around 1675 in East Hampton (Suffolk) New York. She married Samuel Mulford, son of John Mulford and Friede Osborn.
7818.5. Alice Hand was born 2 Jan 1670/71 in East Hampton (Suffolk) New York, and died in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. She married on 26 Nov 1690 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, William Shipman, son of Edward Shipman (~1625-1697) and Elizabeth Comstock (1631-1659). William was born 6 Jun 1656 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 9 Sep 1725 in Hebron Township, Connecticut. They were planters, owning several thousand acres, and were among the founders of Colchester, Connecticut.
Alice and William had eleven children (first cousins to us):
7818.5.1. Edward Shipman was born 20 Mar 1691/92 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married twice, and had children from both marriages.
Edward married first, about 1716 in Connecticut, his cousin Sarah Munger [15624.4.1.1], daughter of Sarah Hand (1664-1751) and Samuel Munger (~1665-1717). Sarah was born 16 Mar 1694/95 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 2 Apr 1718 in Hebron (Tolland) Connrecticut. Sarah and Edward are second cousins, both descending from 15624 John Hand and Alice Gransden.
Edward and Sarah had one child (both second and third cousin to us):
7818.5.1.1. Naomi Shipman was born 1 Nov 1717 in Hebron (Tolland) Connrecticut. She married 18 May 1740 in Coventry (Tolland) Connecticut, John Hawkins, son of George Hawkins and Susannah ___. John was born Oct 1716 and died 18 May 1740.
Edward married second, about 1720, Abigail Waller.
Edward and Abigail had two children (second cousins to us):
7818.5.1.2. William Shipman was born in 1721.
7818.5.1.3. Joseph Shipman was born in 1723.
7818.5.2. Benjamin Shipman was born 17 Dec 1693 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 24 Mar 1762 in Hanover (Morris) New Jersey. He married 21 Mar 1719/20, Charity Morris, daughter of John Morris (1666-1749) and Sarah Crane (~1668-1739) (most of the web sources I have seen put a question mark on Sarah Crane). Charity was born in 1696 in Bloomfield (Essex) New Jersey, and died 4 Jan 1777 in Hanover (Morris) New Jersey. They were Presbyterian.
Benjamin and Charity had ten children (second cousins to us):
7818.5.2.1. Samuel Shipman was born 15 Apr 1722 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey, and died in 1764 in Rockaway (Morris) New Jersey. He married in 1745 in Newark, Lydia Hathaway, daughter of Benjamin Hathaway and widow of ___ Brown. They were Presbyterian, and had six children.
7818.5.2.2. Steven Shipman was born 1 Jun 1724 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey, and died 21 Apr 1736 in Newark, age 11.
7818.5.2.3. Phebe Shipman was born 17 Dec 1726 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey, and died 2 Mar 1727/28 in Newark, age 1.
7818.5.2.4. Elizabeth Shipman was born 1 Nov 1728 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey, and died 13 Aug 1747 in New Jersey.
7818.5.2.5. Mary Shipman was born 15 Aug 1731 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey, and died Aug 1820 in New York. She is said to have married a Samuel Ward. Some have him born 20 Aug 1721 and died 15 Apr 1809 in New York. Others have him born 27 Aug 1724 in Virginia, and died 15 Apr 1799. It appears from this that two people of the same name are being confused.
7818.5.2.6. Phebe Shipman was born 5 Apr 1733 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey, and died 21 Apr 1736 in Newark, age 3.
7818.5.2.7. Abigail Shipman was born 7 Nov 1735 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey. She is said in some sources to have married a John Shadwell, but this assignment may be incorrect -- others have John Shadwell married to another Abigail Shipman, daughter of Jabesh Shipman and Agnes Rogers. As our Abigail is nearly 40 at the given marriage date in 1772, I tend to believe the Shadwell marriage is incorrect.
7818.5.2.8. Stephen Shipman was born 23 Apr 1738 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey. He married Jemima ___.
7818.5.2.9. Alice Shipman was born 23 Mar 1739/40 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey, and died the same year.
7818.5.2.10. Charity Shipman was born in 1742 in Newark (Essex) New Jersey.
7818.5.3. William Shipman was born Apr 1696 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1757. Some sources have his birth as 20 Mar 1691/92, making him a twin to Edward. William married about 1733, Hannah Brown. I suspect she may be our Hannah Brown [31338.5.12.4] daughter of Elizabeth Loomis and John Brown, but we have no evidence to make the connection.
William and Hannah had nine children (second cousins to us):
7818.5.3.1. Abner Shipman was born about 1734 in Connecticut.
7818.5.3.2. Zerviah Shipman was born 13 Jan 1734/35 in Connecticut.
7818.5.3.3. William Shipman was born in 1736 in Connecticut.
7818.5.3.4. Sarah Shipman was born in 1738 in Connecticut.

Charity was born about 1750 and died 5 Apr 1775. Timothy married second, 14 Jan 1779 in New York, Rachel Ackerman, daughter of Jacobus Ackerman (1722-1808) and Maritje Enderse. Rachel was born 2 Jan 1758 in Phillipsburgh (Westchester) New York, and died 30 Sep 1836 in Saratoga Co, New York.

He married 1 Nov 1720 in Glastonbury, Mary Pellett, daughter of Thomas Pellett (1666-1730) and Phillis Maxwell (1667-1730). Mary was born 14 Jan 1690/91 in Concord (Middlesex) Massachusetts, and died 14 Jan 1746/47 in Glastonbury (Hartford) Connecticut.

7818.5.4.8. Daniel Shipman was born 13 Mar 1733/32 in Hartford (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 27 Apr 1809 in Augusta Twp (Leeds-Grenville) Ontario. He married in 1759 in Connecticut, Keziah Haughton (also seen as Keziah Horton), daughter of Ebenezer Haughton and Keziah ___. Keziah was born in 1739 in Hebron (Tolland) Connecticut, and died 21 Mar 1807 in Augusta Twp (Leeds-Grenville) Ontario. Keziah's brother Ebenezer married Daniel's cousin Temperance, 7818.5.6.4 below.
Daniel was a Loyalist, and was imprisoned at times during the Revolutionary War. They moved to Canada after the Revolution.

He married 14 May 1724, his cousin Martha Shipman, daughter of John Shipman and Martha Humphries. Martha was born 1 Apr 1695 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died May 1769. Martha and Samuel are half first cousins, both being descended from Edward Shipman (~1625-1697) (relation is outside our lines). Samuel was a doctor.
Samuel and Martha had seven children (second cousins to us):
7818.5.6.1. Martha Shipman was born 15 Apr 1724 in Hebron (Tolland) Connecticut, and died 15 Feb 1725 in Hebron, age 10 months.
7818.5.6.2. Martha Shipman was born 27 Sep 1726 in Hebron (Tolland) Connecticut, and died 19 Sep 1761. She married 29 Apr 1746, Jesse Townsend, son of Jonathan Townsend (1688-1764) and Mary Otis. Jesse was born about 1725; his death is given as about 1834 in New York -- this death date is probably incorrect, as it makes him 109 years old. Possibly confused with another person of the same name.
7818.5.6.3. Prudence Shipman was born 28 Mar 1728 in Hebron (Tolland) Connecticut, and died 26 Apr 1795 in Hebron. She married 14 Nov 1750, Thomas Welles, son of Thomas Welles (1694-1760) and Elizabeth Merrill (1686-1770). Daniel was a whaler and died just offshore of East Hampton. Coming to shore in a whale boat, he drowned in the surf along with two others. The night before, his wife dreamed the tide rose up to the house, burst open the door, and brought in a coffin. She asked him not to go whaling that day. He said he would go that day, but would not go any more.

We have from one web source that she died 16 Jan 1739/40 in East Hampton, which is probably incorrect -- she is also said to have had eleven children, the first born about 1744. I believe either Jan 1740 is her marriage date, or else we have two Esther Osborns mixed up. Esther married Nathaniel Ball [7808.2.6.3], son of Thomas Ball and Sarah Davis. Nathaniel was born in 1715 and died in 1790.
7818.6.6.3. Mary Osborn was born about 1729 (baptized 9 Nov 1729) in East Hampton (Suffolk) New York.

7818.8.4. Keziah Howell was born about 1710 in New York, and died in 1738.
7818.8.5. Micah Howell was born about 1715 in New York. He married twice, and had children from both marriages.
