Bill’s Family: Ancestors of Eldora Beahm

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

7816. John Meigs was born 28 Feb 1640/41 in Weymouth (Norfolk) Massachusetts, and died 9 Nov 1713 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut. He is a son of John Meigs [15632] and Thomasine Fry [15633]. John married on 7 Mar 1665,

7817. Sarah Wilcoxson. Sarah (also seen as Sarah Wilcox) was born 26 Oct 1646 in Stratford (Fairfield) Connecticut, and died 24 Nov 1691 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut. She is a daughter of William Wilcoxson [15736 (=15634)] and Margaret Birdseye [15737]. Her brother Joseph [7868] is also a direct ancestor.

John was one of the twelve original founders (patentors) of Guilford in 1660. Sarah and John were Congregational, and John was Deacon of the First Church of Guilford, 1696-1713.

They have the unusual situation of two daughters with the same name both growing to adulthood. Their first daughter, Sarah, died in childbirth at age 21. John and Sarah then had another daughter Sarah. Sarah Sr. was 45 at the time, and died from the childbirth.

John and Sarah had eight children:

7816.1. Sarah Meigs (1667 CT - 1688) had descendants and is expanded below.

7816.2. John Meigs [3908] (1670 CT - 1718) and Rebecca Hand are direct ancestors, separate page.

7816.3. Janna Meigs (1672 CT - 1739 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.

7816.4. Ebenezer Meigs (1675 CT - <1712 MA) had descendants and is expanded below.

Hannah had no children that we know of -- her age at death suggests she may have died in childbirth.

7816.6. Hester Meigs was born 10 Nov 1680 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.

7816.7. Mindwell Meigs (1682 CT -1762) had descendants and is expanded below.

Janna was chosen as Ensign of the Train Band (what we would call a Lieutenant in the local militia) in May 1710. He was First Magistrate of East Guilford (I don’t know if that means he was the first magistrate ever, or if “First Magistrate” is the actual title). He served as a Deputy to the General Court in Hartford in 1716, 1717, 1718, and 1726. I believe this is the same Thelus and Lydia who cause us problems with 976 David Blatchley and Lydia Meigs. I also wonder, based on dates alone, whether these might be the Thelus Ward and Lydia Franklin from our own lines. It’s all a big mess which we are nowhere near to figuring out.
