I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. William Barstow and Anna Hubbard

7708. William Barstow was born about 1612 in England, and died 1 Jan 1668/69 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts. He married 8 Jul 1638 in Dedham (Norfolk) Massachusetts,

7709. Anna Hubbard. Anna (seen in some sources as Ann) was born about 1615 in Suffolk, England. The name of the town where she was born has been given as Hendelsham or Hendlesham -- I can find neither such place in Suffolk.

The origin of Barstow (also seen as Berstow) is uncertain. Some sources say it is old Gaelic (Welsh or Briton) from a hilltop or a place where grain is stored. Others have it as Anglo-Saxon, coming from a place (Bairstow) in Yorkshire.

The origin of Hubbard is also uncertain. Some say it is a Norman name, supposed to be derived from the name Hildebert. Others say it is Anglo-Saxon, and comes from Hubert.

William came from London to Dedham (Norfolk) Massachusetts on the “Truelove” in 1635. He settled first at Dedham, then Scituate. He is listed as a freeman there in 1639. They were Congregational. William was a farmer and carpenter. One reference says his son inherited the family shipyard, implying that William must have been a shipbuilder.

After William died, Anna married John Prince, son of John Prince and Elizabeth Tolderbury. John had also been married before, and one of his sons marries a daughter (9 Martha) of William and Anna.

7708.1. Joseph Barstow was born 6 Nov 1639 in Dedham (Norfolk) Massachusetts, and died 17 Apr 1712 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts. He married 16 May 1666 in Scituate, Susanna Lincoln, daughter of Thomas Lincoln (1622 Eng -1692 MA) and Margaret Langer (~1625 - 1694 MA). Susanna was born 16 Aug 1646 in Hingham (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 31 Jan 1730 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts.

Isaac was born 1658 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 10 Jul 1759 in Pembroke (Plymouth) Massachusetts, age 101.

He married 11 Feb 1711/12 in Scituate, Experience Elwell, daughter of Elias Elwell (1668-1737) and Dorcas Low (1674- ). Experience was born 16 Jun 1694 in Gloucester (Essex) Massachusetts.

7708.1.1.2. Susanna Randall was born 15 Nov 1687 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 22 Oct 1732 in Pembroke (Plymouth) Massachusetts. She married 28 Jul 1710 in Scituate, Nathaniel Stetson [7696.6.5], son of Robert Stetson Jr. and Deborah Brooks. Nathaniel was born about 1685 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 12 Apr 1713 in Scituate. They were Congregational, and were married at the 2nd Church of Scituate.
Susanna and Nathaniel had a daughter Susanna, listed under Nathaniel who is closer to the main line.

7708.1.1.3. Jacob Randall was born 19 Mar 1690 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts. He married 3 Jun 1725 in Gloucester (Essex) Massachusetts, Abigail Stevens, daughter of John Stevens (1674 - ~1729) and Mary Bartlett (1682 - ). Abigail was born 4 Jul 1701 in Haverhill (Essex) Massachusetts, and died 4 Feb 1782.

7708.1.2. Joseph Barstow was born 22 Jan 1675 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 25 Jul 1728 in Scituate. He married about 1698, Mary Randall, daughter of Job Randall (1655-1727) and Elizabeth Doughty (1654-). Mary was born 29 Oct 1680 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts and died 3 Dec 1753 in Scituate. They were Congregational. Joseph is given the title Captain, but there is nothing to indicate whether it means military or boat captain.

Elijah was born 7 Mar 1698 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 26 Jun 1762 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts. He was a Deacon at 1st Congregational Church in Hanover. They had seven children.

7708.1.2.2. Joseph Barstow was born 6 Sep 1701 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died at 19 months, on 4 Apr 1703 in Scituate.

7708.1.2.6. James Barstow was born 20 Apr 1711 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 16 Jan 1733 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts.

7708.1.2.7. Mary Barstow was born 20 May 1717 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died in 1791 in Harpswell (Cumberland) Maine. She married 12 May 1736 in Newbury (Essex) Massachusetts, her second cousin William Sylvester [7708.3.9.1], son of Amos Sylvester and Elizabeth Henchman.

7708.1.2.9. Joshua Barstow was born 8 Sep 1720 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Foster, daughter of Hatherly Foster (1671 MA - 1751 MA) and Bathsheba Turner (1679 MA - 1744 MA). They were Congregational, and were married at the 2nd Church of Scituate. They had twelve children.

7708.1.2.10. Abigail Barstow was born about 1723 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 1 Jan 1781 in Warren (Worcester) Massachusetts. She married 23 Aug 1749 in Scituate, Lemuel Bryant, son of Thomas Bryant (1675 - 1754) and Mary Ewell (1685 - 1724).

7708.1.3. Benjamin Barstow was born 1 Mar 1679/80 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts.

7708.1.4. Deborah Barstow was born 26 Dec 1681 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts. She married 1 Jan 1706/07 in Scituate, John Bryant, son of John Bryant (1644 MA - 1708 MA) and Mary Battle (1650-1732). John was born 29 Mar 1677 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 1 Mar 1715/16 in Scituate. They were Congregational, and were married in the 2nd Church of Scituate.

She married 6 Nov 1728, Snow Winslow, son of Nathaniel Winslow (1667 - 1736) and Lydia Snow (1672 - 1716). Snow was born 13 May 1698 in Marshfield (Plymouth) Massachusetts. Two of his brothers married Deborah’s sisters. Deborah and Snow had four children.

7708.1.4.3. Agatha Bryant was born 16 Jul 1712 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 23 Feb 1744/45 in Scituate. Agatha married 10 Dec 1733, Oliver Winslow, son of Nathaniel Winslow (1667 - 1736) and Lydia Snow (1672 - 1716). Oliver was born 24 Nov 1702 in Marshfield (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 4 Feb 1759 in Scituate. Two of his brothers married Agatha’s sisters. They had five children.

7708.1.4.4. Susannah Bryant was born 11 May 1714 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts. She married 3 Feb 1731, Nathaniel Winslow, son of Nathaniel Winslow (1667 - 1736) and Lydia Snow (1672 - 1716). Nathaniel was born 9 Sep 1712 in Marshfield (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 24 May 1734 in Marshfield. Two of his brothers married Susannah’s sisters.

7708.1.4.5. John Bryant was born 23 Apr 1716 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 21 Oct 1793 in Scituate. He was born a month after the death of his father. John married Abial Stockbridge, daughter of Samuel Stockbridge (1679 MA - 1758 MA) and Lydia Barrell (1684 MA). Abial had previously been married to Joseph Benson [3846.7.2] and had a son Joseph from that marriage.
John served on the Committee of Safety during the Revolutionary War. John and Abial had three children (John, Abial and Betty).

7708.2. John Barstow was born in 1640 in Dedham (Norfolk) Massachusetts, and died after 1702. He married 16 Jan 1678 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, Lydia Hatch, daughter of William Hatch (~1624 Eng - ~1702 MA) and Susanna Annable (~1630 - ). Lydia was born 7 Jan 1654/55 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died after 1702. They were Congregational.
John and Lydia had seven children (first cousins to us):

7708.2.1. Job Barstow was born 8 Mar 1679/80 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 14 Sep 1764 in Franklin (New London) Connecticut. He married 2 Mar 1707/08 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut, Rebecca Bushnell, daughter of Joseph Bushnell (1651-1746) and Mary Leffingwell (1654-1745). Rebecca was born 7 Mar 1688 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut, and died 7 May 1782 in Norwich.

7708.2.1.1. John Barstow was born 31 Dec 1724 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut, and died 9 Feb 1796. He married 21 Apr 1747, Elizabeth Newcomb, daughter of Hezekiah Newcomb (~1693 MA - 1772) and Jerusha Bradford (~1693 MA - 1739). Elizabeth is a Mayflower descendant, from Governor William Bradford.

7708.2.2. Jeremiah Barstow was born 28 Aug 1682 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died sometime after 1730. He married 6 Dec 1711 in Marlborough (Middlesex) Massachusetts, Sarah Howe, daughter of Joseph Howe (1661 - 1701) and Dorothy Martin (~1664 - 1742). Sarah was born 27 Jul 1688 in Marlborough (Middlesex) Massachusetts.

Joseph was born about 1653 in Hingham (Plymouth) Massachusetts (baptized 20 Nov 1653), and died 9 Jul 1740 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts.

7708.3.4.5. Joseph Bates was born 25 Jan 1696/97, probably in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He married Mary Bowker.

7708.3.4.10. Clement Bates was born 27 Dec 1707 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 14 Mar 1788 in Cohasset (Norfolk) Massachusetts. He married 24 Sep 1730, Agatha Merritt. Agatha was born 11 Feb 1712 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts. They had nine children.

7708.3.4.11. Rachel Bates was born 22 Feb 1709/10, probably in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, and died 14 Oct 1788 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts. She married on 15 Aug 1733 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, Stephen Torrey. Stephen was born Jan 1709/10.

7708.3.7.4. Jacob Sylvester was born about 1724 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 25 Jul 1806 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts. He married 5 Nov 1753 his first cousin once removed, Mary Bates [7708.3.4.5.1], daughter of Joseph, above.

7708.3.8. David Sylvester was born 20 Apr 1683 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts. Some have him as born in 1682.

7708.3.9. Amos Sylvester was born in 1685 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died in Oct 1753 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts. He married 20 Nov 1706 in Scituate, Elizabeth Henchman, daughter of Joseph Henchman and Mary Rose. They were Congregational, and were married at the 2nd Church of Scituate.
Amos and Elizabeth had five children (second cousins to us):

7708.3.9.2. Henchman Sylvester was born 20 Dec 1713 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 23 Apr 1758 in Hanover. He married 24 Feb 1747/48, Sarah Stockbridge. Sarah was born 26 Oct 1718 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died about 1761.

7708.3.9.3. Michael Sylvester was born 27 Oct 1714 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 12 Nov 1798 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts. Michael married first, 12 Nov 1740, Mary Barden, daughter of Thomas Barden (~1700-~1774) and Eunice Booth (1695-1769). Mary was born about 1715, and died sometime before 1759. Michael married second, 17 Jan 1760, Ruth Turner, daughter of Ezekiel Turner (1701-1773) and Ruth Randall (1719-1805). Ruth was born 12 Jun 1737 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 31 Oct 1806.

7708.3.9.4. Nathaniel Sylvester was born 29 Apr 1718 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died 21 Feb 1781 in Hanover (Plymouth) Massachusetts. He married 27 Jan 1743, Sage Barden, daughter of Thomas Barden (~1700-~1774) and Eunice Booth (1695-1769). Sage was born about 1723, and died 7 Oct 1791 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts. Her sister Mary was the first wife of Nathaniel’s brother Michael. Nathaniel and Sage had one child (Elijah).

7708.3.9.5. Caleb Sylvester was born 14 Dec 1719 in Scituate (Plymouth) Massachusetts, and died in 1770. He married 1 Nov 1750, Desire Stetson, daughter of Benjamin Stetson (1696-1758) and Lillis Turner (1701-1755). Desire was born about 1725, and died sometime after 1770. Caleb and Desire had one child (Caleb).

7708.4. Patience Barstow was born 3 Oct 1643 in Dedham (Norfolk) Massachusetts. She married in 1662 Moses Simmons, son of Moses Simmons (~1605 - 1689) and Sarah Chandler (d. 1691). Moses was born about 1639, and died in 1676 in Duxbury (Plymouth) Massachusetts. They were Congregational.
