Bill’s Family: Ancestors of Eldora Beahm |
||
| These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further. | HOME | |

This is a double line: two children are direct ancestors.
|
NOTABLES:
3916.3.1. Abigail Chatfield married into Rita’s side of the family |
3916 (and 3914). George Chatfield was born 18 Aug 1668 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1747. He is a son of George Chatfield [7832] and Isabelle Nettleton [7833]. George married first, 10 Feb 1691/92 in Killingworth,
3917 (and 3915). Hester Hull. Hester was born 4 Aug 1672 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 30 Jan 1715/16 in Killingworth. She is a daughter of 7834 John Hull and Abigail Kelsey.
This is a double line; two of their children (Josiah and Esther) are our direct ancestors. We use 3916 for the primary reference number, as son Josiah’s line carries the Chatfield name the furthest. Hester is seen in some sources as Esther Hull. They were Congregational.
After Hester died, George married in 1719, Silence Mansfield, daughter of Joseph Mansfield and Mary ___. Silence was born 24 Oct 1664 in New Haven (New Haven) Connecticut. She had previously married 15736.8 Obadiah Wilcoxson, and had nine children from that marriage. Her daughter, Silence Wilcoxson, marries #2 George Chatfield below. There is some resulting confusion in different sources due to two marriages of a Silence Wilcoxson to a George Chatfield at around the same time. We don’t know of any children from George Sr. and Silence.
George and Hester had eleven children:
3916.1. Esther Chatfield was born 10 Nov 1692 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 1 Jan 1693, age 2 months.
3916.2. George Chatfield was born 25 Dec 1693 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in
Oct 1765. He married first, 30 Oct 1713 in Killingworth, Silence Wilcoxson [15736.8.6], daughter of Obadiah Wilcoxson
(1648-1714) and Silence Mansfield. Silence was born about 1691 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1722 in
Connecticut. George’s mother and Silence’s father both died within three years of their marriage, and in 1719 his father
married her mother. Since they had the same names (George Chatfield and Silence Mansfield Wilcoxson), many sources have the two confused.
After Silence died, George married second, in 1723, Esther Parks. A few sources have children for George and Silence, but as
they also have the two sets of George and Silence hopelessly combined into one, I have ignored them. Some sources have 3916.3.3 Esther and 3016.3.4 Ann as the daughters of George and Esther Parks.
3916.3. John Chatfield (1696 CT - 1753) had descendants and is expanded below.
3916.4. Abigail Chatfield (1698 CT - ) had descendants and is expanded below.

3916.6. Esther Chatfield [1957] (1703 CT - 1777 CT) and Daniel Stevens are direct ancestors, separate page.
3916.7. Cornelius Chatfield (1706 CT - 1788 in Killingworth.
3916.8. Naomi Chatfield (1709 CT - ) had descendants and is expanded below.
3916.9. Philip Chatfield (1711 CT - 1775 CT) had descendants and is expanded below.

2 Jan 1846 in DuPage Co, Illinois. He married on 20 Jun 1782 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, his
cousin Lydia Stevens [3912.6.9], daughter of Nathaniel Stevens (1710-1805) and Abigail Buell
(1718- ). Lydia was born 22 Nov 1758 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 11 Jun 1824 in
Ogden (Monroe) New York. Lydia and John are second cousins, both descending from Samuel Buell and 7824.6 Judith Stevens. They are also
third cousins, through 7834 John Hull and Abigail Kelsey. They were Congregational and were married in the First Church of Killingworth.
{There is not complete agreement on this family: some have John married to a different Lydia Stevens
[978.1], daughter of Daniel Stevens and Naomi Chatfield.}
John served in the Revolutionary War.
John and Lydia had ten children, both second and third cousin to us,
listed under Lydia who is closer to the main line.
3916.3.2.7. Elias Dudley was born 12 Aug 1761 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 25 Jan 1808. He married 22 Oct 1793, Mary Spring, daughter of John Spring and Hannah Crosby. Mary was born 17 Jan 1770, and died in Uxbridge (Worcester) Massachusetts.

3916.3.3. Esther Chatfield was born 9 Mar 1723/24 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died
15 Oct 1817 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut. There is not complete agreement on her placement here; some have her as
the daughter of 3916.2 George Chatfield and Esther Parks.
Esther married 18 Apr 1744 in Killingworth, her cousin Gideon Kelsey [15670.6.4.10], son of Joseph Kelsey
(1673-1740) and Hannah Hayden. Gideon was born 1 Apr 1718 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 5 Mar 1763/64
in Killingworth. Gideon and Esther are second cousins once removed, both being descended from 15670 William Kelsey.
Esther and Gideon had eight children (both second and third cousin to us):
3916.3.3.1. Asa Kelsey was born 27 Oct 1744 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.3.3.2. Abigail Kelsey was born 3 Oct 1746 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.3.3.3. Patience Kelsey was born 10 Jan 1748 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.3.3.4. Esther Kelsey was born 3 May 1751 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 25 Nov 1836. She married 23 Sep 1777 in Connecticut, Cornelius Higgins. Cornelius was born 22 Jul 1744 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.3.3.5. Lydia Kelsey was born 10 Oct 1754 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died
5 Feb 1794 in Killingworth. She married on 17 Feb 1773, her cousin Abel Nettleton [7838.1.1.7.1], son of
Jeremiah Nettleton and Deborah Kelsey. Abel was born 7 Aug 1745 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in
Killingworth. Abel and Lydia are third cousins, both being descended from 15670 William Kelsey. They are also third cousins once
removed through Hull, and third cousins once removed through Nettleton.
Lydia and Abel had five children, born 1774 to 1782 in Killingworth. We list one here (both third and fourth cousin to us):
3916.3.3.5.2. Philemon Nettleton was born 26 May 1776 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 2 Sep 1848 in Leroy (Genesee) New York. He married in 1796, his cousin Lydia LeBaron [3916.7.5.6], daughter of David LeBaron and Martha Chatfield. Lydia was born on 11 Feb 1777 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 19 Feb 1851. Philemon and Lydia are second cousins once removed. They had nine children, born 1797 to 1817 in New York.
3916.3.3.6. George Kelsey was born 6 Feb 1757 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 26 Jun 1827. He married Susannah Smith. Susannah was born in 1760.
3916.3.3.7. James Kelsey was born 6 Oct 1759 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut. James fought in the Revolutionary War. He was taken prisoner by the British, and was held on the prison ship “Sampson” in Brooklyn, New York. Nothing more is known of him, and it is thought that he may have died on the prison ship.
3916.3.3.8. Benjamin Kelsey was born 29 Oct 1762 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 22 Jul 1809 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married in 1783 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut, Zillah Cone. Zillah was born 27 Feb 1764 in Haddam (Middlesex) Connecticut. They had seven children, born 1785 to 1805 in Haddam.
3916.3.4. Ann Chatfield was born 1 Apr 1727 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died
25 Jan 1781 in Killingworth. There is not complete agreement on her placement here; some have her as the
daughter of 3916.2 George Chatfield and Esther Parks.
Ann married 6 Jan 1745/46 in Killingworth, her cousin Abner Kelsey [15670.6.4.12], son of Joseph
Kelsey (1673-1740) and Hannah Hayden. Abner was born 10 Aug 1724 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
Abner and Ann are second cousins once removed, both being descended from 15670 William Kelsey.
Ann and Abner had twelve children (both second and third cousin to us):
3916.3.4.1. Chloe Kelsey was born 2 Jun 1748.
3916.3.4.2. Temperance Kelsey was born 2 Jun 1748.
3916.3.4.3. Abner Kelsey was born 2 Feb 1748/49, and died sometime before 1755. I question the birth date, as there are only eight months between Chloe/Temperance and Abner. Should perhaps be 1749/50.
3916.3.4.4. Ann Kelsey was born 18 Aug 1751.
3916.3.4.5. Avis Kelsey was born 14 Nov 1753, and died two weeks later, 3 Dec 1753.

3916.3.4.7. Avis Kelsey was born 12 Feb 1758.
3916.3.4.8. Damaris Kelsey was born 30 Mar 1760.
3916.3.4.9. Jane Kelsey was born 16 May 1762.
3916.3.4.10. Gideon Kelsey was born 25 Jun 1764.
3916.3.4.11. Pardon Kelsey was born 24 Jul 1766. He married Rebecca Crocker. Rebecca was born in 1769.
3916.3.4.12. Joseph Kelsey was born 5 Oct 1769
3916.3.5. John Chatfield was born 5 Mar 1728/29 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut,
and died 24 Aug 1786 at Grand Bank, Newfoundland. He married in 1752 in Killingworth, Ruth Buell (also seen listed in
places as Martha Buell). She is said in some sources to be a daughter of Josiah Buell [7824.6.3]
and Martha Jeffers, but there are conflicts between Josiah and his uncle of the same name, so the connection to Ruth is uncertain.
Ruth was born on 17 Oct 1732 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1830 in Troy (Newaygo) Michigan.
John served in the Revolutionary War 1777-1780, a private in the 6th Connecticut Regiment. He died while he was on a whaling
expedition. He became sick in the Grand Bank area, and was put ashore at Newfoundland.
John and Ruth had five children (second cousins to us):
3916.3.5.1. John Chatfield was born in 1754 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died
13 Jan 1832 in Georgia. Some interesting family legends about him were found on line. There are of course some inconsistencies,
so we’ll probably never know the original story or if any of it is true.
John married in Connecticut and had one child, their names unknown. He is said to have fought in the Revolutionary War, being captured by the
British and placed in a prison ship sailing to England. He escaped in mid-ocean, floating on a piece of timber, and was picked up after
several days. His rescuers turned out to be pirates or some other nasty sort, and he was taken to some unknown land and kept as a slave
for many years. He finally got back to Connecticut around 1810, to find that his child had died and his wife remarried, so without
revealing who he was he left and moved to Georgia. There he was married at age 60 to Sebra Jones, and had three children who are the
ancestors of all the Chatfields in that area. His story is thought by some to be the basis for Tennyson’s “Enoch Arden”,
although there are any number of other Robinson Crusoe type models available.
Another version of the story I found does not mention any Revolutionary War service, but says rather that John was a mariner and
captain of a boat that was captured by Algerian pirates.
3916.3.5.2. Abigail Chatfield was born about 1765, and died in 1830.
3916.3.5.3. Hiel Chatfield was born in 1768, and died in 1809.
3916.3.5.4. George Washington Chatfield was born in 1769, and died 3 Nov 1839. He was originally named Benedict Arnold Chatfield, but his parents changed his name after Benedict went over to the British. I wonder if the original name was given because of his grandmother, Abigail Arnold -- but I can find no close relationship between her and Benedict.
3916.3.5.5. Susannah Chatfield was born in 1772, and died in 1803.
3916.3.6. Elizabeth Chatfield was born 8 May 1733 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
She married 22 Apr 1756 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, Hezekiah Buckingham, son of Hezekiah Buckingham
(1682 CT - 1728 CT). Hezekiah was born 2 Mar 1726/27 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.
Elizabeth and Hezekiah had eleven children (second cousins to us):
3916.3.6.1. Hezekiah Buckingham was born 3 Jul 1757 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.3.6.2. Jedediah Buckingham was born 6 Oct 1758 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.3.6.3. Gideon Buckingham was born 22 Oct 1760 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. He married Triphena Ware.
3916.3.6.4. Sarah Buckingham was born 28 Jul 1762 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in New York. She married in 1783, Peabody Pratt [3930.9.3.4], son of David Pratt and Jerusha Chalker. Peabody was born 12 Oct 1757 in Connecticut, and died 28 Oct 1824.
3916.3.6.5. George Buckingham was born 16 Nov 1764 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 26 Feb 1814. He married Keturah Wicks.

3916.3.6.7. Benjamin Buckingham was born 11 Nov 1768 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 19 Mar 1855 in Brooklyn (Kings) New York. He married 3 Oct 1791, Nancy Howell. Nancy was born 17 Sep 1771 in Newburgh (Orange) New York, and died 1 Jan 1837 in Tully (Onondaga) New York.
3916.3.6.8. William Buckingham was born 8 Aug 1770 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 10 Apr 1850. He married Lydia Kirtland. Lydia was born about 1770 in Ovid (Seneca) New York, and died in 1861.
3916.3.6.9. Phebe Buckingham was born 13 May 1772 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. She married in Apr 1792 in Greenville (Greene) New York, William Barker. William was born 3 Feb 1763 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut.
3916.3.6.10. Ann Buckingham was born 8 Jun 1774 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut. She married Gideon Hitchcock.
3916.3.6.11. John Buckingham was born 11 Feb 1776 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 13 Sep 1812 at Hudson River, New York. I can’t find any city of Hudson River, so I assume he actually drowned in the river. John married 18 Jul 1802, Sarah Haven. Sarah was born in New York.
3916.3.7. George Chatfield was born 13 Dec 1735 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1764 (some have 1775 for death).
3916.3.8. Joseph Chatfield was born 21 Feb 1737/38 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in Derby (New Haven) Connecticut.
3916.3.9. Benjamin Chatfield was born 5 Aug 1740 in Killingworth (Middlesex)
Connecticut, and died 4 Aug 1785 in Killingworth. He married on 10 Nov 1770 in Saybrook (Middlesex)
Connecticut, Lucretia Doud [3930.6.3.1], daughter of Peleg Doude (1734-~1806) and Merab Ward
(1733-1806). Lucretia was born 4 Aug 1752 in Connecticut. Lucretia and Benjamin are third cousins once removed, both
descending from 15670 William Kelsey.
Benjamin and Lucretia had one child that we know of, there may be others (both second and third cousin to us):
3916.3.9.1. Lucretia Chatfield was born 2 Jun 1772 in Salisbury (Litchfield) Connecticut. She married in 1790, James Thompson.
3916.4. Abigail Chatfield was born 9 Aug 1698 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
She married 11 Oct 1715, Charles Hazelton [7870.1.1], son of Charles Hazelton (1662-1712) and Catherine Westcott (1664-1692).
Charles was born 11 Apr 1689 in East Greenwich (Kent) Rhode Island.
Abigail and Charles had four children (both first and second cousin to us):
3916.4.1. Mary Hazelton was born 27 Dec 1717 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died
in Killingworth. She married first, 30 Dec 1736 in Killingworth, her cousin Daniel Nettleton [15666.1.3.5], son of
George Nettleton (~1673-~1745) and Rebecca ___. Daniel was born about 1715 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died
sometime around 1745 in Killingworth. Daniel and Mary are second cousins once removed, twice over: through 15668 Josiah Hull and
Elizabeth Loomis, and also through 15666 Samuel Nettleton and Maria. After Daniel died, Mary married 5 Apr 1747,
John Sheather [7838.3.1.1], son of John Sheather and Dorcas Stiles.
Mary and first husband Daniel had four children (both second and third cousin to us):
3916.4.1.1. Amos Nettleton was born 22 Jun 1737 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1798 in Augusta Township (Leeds and Grenville, Ontario) Canada. He was married, but his wife is unknown. Amos and his wife had six children, born 1769 to 1777 in New York. The fact that they moved to Canada sometime after 1777 suggests they may have been Loyalists.
3916.4.1.2. Daniel Nettleton was born 9 Jun 1740 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 4 Aug 1832 in Montague Township (Lanark, Ontario) Canada. He married Phoebe ___. They had eight children. We don’t know when they moved to Canada, but the association with brother Amos suggests they too might have been Loyalists.
3916.4.1.3. Thamsen Nettleton was born 13 Feb 1742 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.4.1.4. Roswell Nettleton was born 17 Jun 1744 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
Mary and second husband John had one child (both second and third cousin to us):
3916.4.1.5. Mary Sheather was born 22 Sep 1750.
3916.4.2. Samuel Hazelton was born 17 May 1720 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
He married 16 Sep 1755, his cousin Abigail Chatfield [7832.2.6.2], daughter of Ebenezer
Chatfield (1703-1789) and Abigail Prindle (1704-1789). Abigail was born Jan 1731/32 in Derby, Connecticut. Abigail and Samuel are
second cousins, both being descended from 7832 George Chatfield and Isabelle Nettleton.
Samuel and Abigail had three children, but we only know two (both second and third cousin to us):
3916.4.2.1. Lydia Hazelton was born in 1756.
3916.4.2.2. David Hazelton was born in 1757.
3916.4.3. Charles Hazelton was born 13 Apr 1732 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.4.4. Abigail Hazelton was born 6 Apr 1737 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.
3916.7. Cornelius Chatfield was born 3 Jun 1706 in Killingworth (Middlesex)
