These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. John Meigs and Rebecca Hand

3908. John Meigs was born 11 Nov 1670 in Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 19 Feb 1718. He is a son of John Meigs [7816] and Sarah Wilcoxson [7817]. John was a Congregational Deacon. He married 20 Jul 1694 in East Guilford,

Rebecca’s parents are in question. Some have her father as Stephen’s brother John Hand (which would not affect her line further back on that side). Some have her mother as Sarah Stratton, who is Stephen Hand’s first wife. We have done no work in this line ourselves other than website searches, so have no evidence either way. Any users of this data should realize that Rebecca’s parents and maternal grandparents may turn out to be incorrect.

3908.1. John Vincent Meigs was born 10 Jul 1697 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 24 Nov 1767 in Woodbury (Litchfield) Connecticut. He married on 7 Apr 1724 in Connecticut, Thankful Murray, daughter of John Murray (1665-1747) and Ann Bradley (1669-1749). Thankful was born 12 Dec 1690 in East Guilford, Connecticut, and died 1 Jan 1750 in Woodbury (Litchfield) Connecticut. As both of their fathers were Deacons, we assume that John and Thankful were probably Congregational.
John and Thankful had four children (first cousins to us):

3908.1.1. Dr. John Meigs was born 29 Apr 1725 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died in 1770 in Woodbury (Litchfield) Connecticut. He married 21 Jan 1744, Rebecca Clark, daughter of Joseph Clark and Ann ___. Rebecca was born in 1726 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 1 Aug 1795 in Bethlehem (Litchfield) Connecticut. John was a physician with an “extensive practice” in Bethlehem.
John and Rebecca had seven children (second cousins to us):

3908.1.1.1. Irene Meigs was born 21 Sep 1745. She married 15 Dec 1763, Elisha Clark.

3908.1.1.2. Abner Meigs was born 12 Jun 1747, and died in 1835. He married Sarah Church, daughter of John Church. Sarah was born 3 Jul 1748.

3908.1.1.6. Phineas Meigs was born 11 Jul 1760, and died 12 Aug 1805. He married Sarah Tomlinson, daughter of Isaac Tomlinson and Sybil Russell. Sarah was born 12 May 1765 in Woodbury (Litchfield) Connecticut, and died 13 Dec 1856.

3908.1.1.7. Jesse Meigs was born 7 Mar 1763, and died sometime after 1837. He married 6 Feb 1782, Hannah Pritchard, daughter of James Pritchard and Abigail Hickox. Hannah was born 7 Jul 1765 in Derby (New Haven) Connecticut.
Jesse served in the Revolutionary War.

3908.1.2. Ichabod Meigs was born 3 Oct 1726 in Connecticut, and died 4 Jan 1727, age 3 months.

3908.1.3. Waitstill Meigs was born 3 Jul 1728 in Connecticut, and died 22 Dec 1749.

3908.2. Stephen Meigs was born 10 Oct 1699 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 31 May 1759. He married 1 Jun 1731 in Franklin (New London) Connecticut, Jane Johnson, daughter of John Johnson. Jane was born about 1700 in Norwich (New London) Connecticut, and died 8 Aug 1756. They were married in Franklin Congregational Church.
Stephen and Jane had four children (first cousins to us):

3908.2.1. Ezekiel Meigs was born 21 Jun 1733. He married Elizabeth Seward, daughter of Daniel Seward and Mehitabel Boreman. Elizabeth (seen in some sources as Asenath Seward) was born 20 Dec 1731 in Bristol (Hartford) Connecticut, and died 11 Feb 1773. Her sister Rebecca also marries into our family, see 3920.3.8 Benjamin Johnson.
Ezekiel and Elizabeth had nine children (second cousins to us):

3908.2.1.3. Sarah Meigs was born 15 Sep 1761, and died 2 Feb 1853. She married Thomas Foster.

3908.2.2. Irene Meigs was born 21 Jun 1737, and died 13 Feb 1816. She married 22 Sep 1756, Reuben Bartlett, son of Ebenezer Bartlett (1702-1770) and Abigail Wilcox (b. 1712). Reuben was born 28 Mar 1738 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 19 Jul 1801 in East Guilford. Reuben is not related to our Bartlett or Wilcox lines, at least back to 1600.
Irene and Reuben had six children, but we only know one (second cousin to us):

3908.2.2.1. Elisha Bartlett was born 3 Feb 1773 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut. He married 5 Sep 1805, Ruth Chittenden [7810.7.3.4.4], daughter of Noah Chittenden and Elizabeth Crampton.

3908.3. Recompense Meigs was born 11 Dec 1701 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 14 Apr 1760. He married 3 May 1727 in Connecticut, Phoebe Goodale. Phoebe was born about 1705 in Bridgehampton, New York, and died 26 Dec 1771.
Recompense and Phoebe had five children (first cousins to us):

3908.3.1. Sylvanus Meigs was born 13 Feb 1728, and died 15 Apr 1753. He married 3 Dec 1751 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, Lydia Franklin. Lydia was born in 1731 and died in 1801.
Sylvanus and Lydia had one child (second cousin to us):

3908.3.2. Phoebe Meigs was born 1 Feb 1730. She married 27 Sep 1750, Aaron Graves [7868.4.4.6], son of John Graves (1683-1766) and Hannah Farnum (1691-). Aaron was born 9 Mar 1721/22 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 8 Aug 1814 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire. They joined the First Congregational Church of Walpole, 3 Jun 1777. Aaron and Phoebe are third cousins, both being descended from 15736 William Wilcoxson and Margaret Birdseye.
Phoebe and Aaron had ten children (both second and third cousins to us):

3908.3.2.1. Tryphena Graves was born in 1754 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire.

3908.3.2.2. Recompense Graves was born 20 Jan 1756 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire, and died in Apr 1821. He married 20 May 1781, Susannah Little (some have Hannah Little).

3908.3.2.3. Daniel Graves was born about 1757 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire.

3908.3.2.4. Jesse Graves was born 11 Apr 1758 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire, and died in 1775. His age and date of death suggest possible Revolutionary War, but we have found nothing for him.

3908.3.2.5. Aaron Graves was born 11 Feb 1760 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire, and died 3 Oct 1816. He married Rhoda Wheeler.

3908.3.2.6. Hannah Graves was born 8 Nov 1761 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire, and died 31 Dec 1852. She has also been seen listed as Harriet Graves. She married 15 Nov 1786, Simon Buell [7824.6.6.3.4], son of Aaron Buell (1730-1807) and Hannah Post (1734-1771). Simon was born 29 Aug 1761 in Newport, New Hampshire. Hannah and Simon are fourth cousins, through 15632 John Meigs and Thomasine Fry.

3908.3.2.7. Samuel Graves was born 20 Feb 1763 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire, and died 4 Jun 1846. He married Elizabeth ___.

3908.3.2.8. Abner Graves was born 5 Feb 1766 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire, and died 4 Apr 1855. He married Mary ___. She is listed as Mary Graves, but as we don’t have her parents we don’t know if Graves is really her maiden name.

3908.3.2.9. Roxanna Graves was born 4 Dec 1772 in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire.

3908.3.2.10. Lydia Graves was born probably sometime in the 1760’s in Walpole (Cheshire) New Hampshire. She married in 1795 in Walpole, Ebenezer Farnum. Ebenezer was born 26 Mar 1752 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 17 Dec 1838. Ebenezer is probably a cousin, but we don’t know the relationship. He served in the Revolutionary War.

3908.3.3. Nathan Meigs was born 5 Nov 1732, and died sometime before 1770. He married Lucy Starr, daughter of Jonathan Starr, and widow of Simeon Dudley.
Nathan and Lucy had one child that we know of, there may be others (second cousin to us):

3908.3.4. Elias Meigs was born 15 Apr 1735, and died 22 May 1819. He married 13 Jan 1759, Rachel Bishop [7854.3.2.2.4], daughter of Josiah Bishop (1703-1754) and Hannah Chittenden (1703-1773). Rachel was born 2 Dec 1736, and died 1 Oct 1825.
Elias served in the Revolutionary War, a private in Capt Vail’s Company, Connecticut Guards, Apr 1781 to Jan 1782.
Elias and Rachel had eight children (both second and fourth cousin to us):

3908.3.4.1. Rhoda Meigs was born 7 Jul 1760, and died 19 Nov 1817. She married Samuel Tyler.

3908.3.4.2. Rachel Meigs was born 30 Oct 1762, and died 13 Nov 1836. She married Ashbel Crampton.

3908.3.4.3. Abel Meigs was born 19 Jul 1765, and died 19 Aug 1843 in Madison (New Haven) Connecticut. He married Deborah Carter.
Abel and Deborah had several children, of whom we list one (third cousin to us):

3908.3.4.3.1. Anna Meigs was born 3 Jun 1799 in Madison (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 30 Apr 1878. She married Daniel Griswold [1958.4.7.5], son of Abner Griswold and Mary Hull. Daniel was born in 1801 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died there 9 Aug 1874.

3908.3.4.4. Olive Meigs was born 15 Oct 1767, and died 27 Apr 1848. She married Caleb Fowler [1960.3.8], son of Ebenezer Fowler and Desire Bristol. Caleb was born 31 Dec 1755 in N. Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 12 Oct 1822.

3908.3.4.6. Phoebe Meigs was born 9 Sep 1772, and died 19 Nov 1803. She married her cousin Nathan Wilcox [15736.8.8.4.1], son of Jehiel Wilcox and Abigail Crampton. Nathan was born in 1760 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 11 Feb 1829. Phoebe and Nathan are third cousins once removed, both being descended from 15736 William Wilcoxson and Margaret Birdseye. After Phoebe died, Nathan married Anna Weld.

3908.3.4.8. Irene Meigs was born 5 Oct 1777, and died 9 Feb 1868. She married Thomas Shelley.

3908.3.5. Abigail Meigs was born 12 Mar 1738, and died 30 Nov 1780. She married Hull Crampton (there is a conflict between sources, some have Hull married to 7816.3.1.4 Elizabeth Meigs, daughter of Janna Meigs and Elizabeth Dudley). Hull was born 22 Mar 1734/35 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 21 Nov 1796.
Abigail and Hull had eight children, names unknown.

3908.6. Phineas Meigs was born 21 Sep 1708 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 19 May 1782 in Connecticut. He married 31 Jan 1739 in Connecticut, Abigail Dudley, daughter of Ebenezer Dudley (1681-1751) and Elizabeth Grave. Abigail was born 3 Nov 1719, and died 14 Sep 1805. She is not directly related to us, but is a half-sister to the children of Ebenezer’s first wife, 15670.9.4 Abigail Kelsey.

The information we are given says Phineas served in the Revolutionary War. He was a private in Capt Sam Barker’s Company in the 6th (Connecticut?) Regiment under Lt Col Wm Douglass from 3 Feb 1777 to 3 Feb 1780. He then joined Capt Nathaniel Edwards’ Company in the Connecticut State Brigade, 3 Apr 1781 to 19 May 1782. Phineas was killed in a fight on the seashore near East Guilford.
I question whether this is the correct person, simply because of his age (73). Possible, but.... Perhaps he is confused with another Phineas Meigs.
Phineas and Abigail had one child that we know of, there were probably others (first cousin to us):

3908.6.1. Abigail Meigs was born 12 Mar 1742 in Connecticut, and died 28 Mar 1825. She married her second cousin Jehiel Meigs [7816.3.3.3], son of Jehiel Meigs (1703-1780) and Lucy Bartlett (1713-1804). Jehiel was born 6 Jul 1743 in Connecticut, and died 27 Dec 1776.

3908.7. Sarah Meigs was born 10 Dec 1713 in East Guilford (New Haven) Connecticut, and died 6 Feb 1796. She married 7 Dec 1734, Benjamin Pratt, son of Benjamin Pratt (1680-1757) and Anna Bates (1678-). Benjamin was born 3 Oct 1704 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.
Sarah and Benjamin had six children (first cousins to us):

3908.7.1. Rebecca Pratt was born 6 Sep 1735, and died Feb 1823. She married Moses Reed, son of Eleazer Reed (b 1695) and Abigail Tuttle (b 1705). Moses was born in 1735 and died 6 Oct 1802. He is not related to our Reed line.

3908.7.1.1. John Reed was born probably around late 1750’s to early 1770’s. He married Lydia Landon.

3908.7.1.2. Benjamin Reed was born probably around late 1750’s to early 1770’s.

3908.7.1.3. Patience Reed was born probably around late 1750’s to early 1770’s.

3908.7.1.4. Abraham Reed was born probably around late 1750’s to early 1770’s.

3908.7.1.5. Moses Reed was born probably around late 1750’s to early 1770’s.

3908.7.1.6. Obadiah Reed was born probably around late 1750’s to early 1770’s.

3908.7.1.7. Rebecca Reed was born probably around late 1750’s to early 1770’s.

3908.7.2. William Pratt was born 6 Sep 1737, and died 24 May 1820 in Paris (Oneida) New York. He married 25 Apr 1763, Abigail Bishop. Abigail was born in 1746.
William and Abigail had thirteen children (second cousins to us):

3908.7.3. Jedediah Pratt was born 23 May 1740, and died 16 Apr 1814. He married Ann Wolcott. Ann was born about 1749, and died 22 Nov 1830.
Jedediah and Ann had ten children (second cousins to us):

3908.7.4. Benjamin Pratt was born 7 Nov 1743, and died 8 Mar 1811. He married Sybil Stowe. Sybil was born about 1749 and died 27 Nov 1809 in Saybrook, Connecticut. Benjamin was a mariner. Their first three children are listed as baptized by the “Ecclesiastical Society”, a rather unusual structure set up in early Connecticut. Congregationalism was almost a State religion at that time, and Ecclesiastical Societies were set up by the Congregational Church. They were semi-independent of the church, and acted almost like secular governments, with power of taxation. A person might belong to the Society, but not be a member of the Church. In any case, all their children born after 1777 were baptized in the Congregational Church.
Benjamin and Sybil had ten children (second cousins to us):

3908.7.4.4. Sylvia Pratt was born 22 Dec 1777. She married 7 Oct 1799 in Saybrook, Augustus Chalker [3930.9.9.4], son of Jacob Chalker (1742-1831) and Lois Whittlesey (1740-1821). Augustus was born 21 Feb 1776 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 18 May 1859 in Old Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.

3908.7.4.5. Sylvester Pratt was born 22 Dec 1777 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 10 Jul 1807 in Saybrook.

3908.7.5. Ebenezer Pratt was born 11 Feb 1745, and died 19 May 1823. He married Mary Lawrence. Mary was born about 1757 and died 6 Jul 1812.
Ebenezer and Mary had two children that we know of, there may be others (second cousins to us):

3908.7.5.2. Polly Pratt was born sometime around 1780, and died 10 Nov 1789 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut.

3908.7.6. Irene Pratt was born 2 Feb 1751, and died 15 May 1839. She married Samuel Williams.
Irene and Samuel had one child that we know of, there may be others (second cousin to us):

3908.7.6.1. William Williams was born 20 Aug 1783 in Saybrook (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 1 Oct 1835 in Saybrook. He married Abigail Pratt, daughter of Asa Pratt (1761 - ) and Susan Church. Abigail was born in 1787 and died 1 Aug 1817 in Essex (Middlesex) Connecticut. She is not directly related to us, but is a cousin to some of our cousins, descending from John Pratt (1644-1692) and Sarah Jones (1644-1726).
