Banfield Capron [Gen 12]

Elizabeth Callender

These are the earliest known members in this branch of the family.  All of our information on this family comes from secondary website sources.  I am presenting what has been found, but cannot say anything about the accuracy.

3714.  Banfield Capron was born 16 Jul 1660 probably in Devonshire, England, and died 20 Aug 1752 in Attleboro (Bristol) Massachusetts.  He married Dec 1680 in Massachusetts,
3715.  Elizabeth Callender.  Elizabeth was born about 1661 in Devonshire, England, and died 10 Mar 1734/35 in Attleboro (Bristol) Massachusetts.  Some sources say Elizabeth was born in Rehoboth (Bristol) Massachusetts.  Some say her father is John Callender.

I could find nothing on the origin of the name Capron, other than that it is from England.  There are "family crest" sites which give an origin in Berkshire and say the name is from pre-Norman times, but I generally don't put any credence in those.  The family story was that Banfield came from Wales, or England along the north border of Wales.  More recent research suggests that they are rather from Devonshire in southwest England, which is near Wales.
Callender is most commonly a Scots name.  Again I could find nothing definite on the origins or meaning, but most sources say it is derived from the town of Callender in Perthshire, Scotland.  They were lowland Scots and were not involved in the clan systems.  There is a separate origin in England, a variant of Challender, a seller of blankets.  Our immediate Callenders most likely came from Devonshire in southwest England, so they are more probably of the second origin.  Banfield is supposed to have known the Callender family in England, and became reacquainted with them when they moved to America.
The name Banfield is obviously taken from a surname, which means that we have Banfield family ancestors in this line, but they are unknown.  Banfields, Caprons and Callenders are all found in Devonshire in the 1600's.

Banfield  supposedly came to Massachusetts as a stowaway at age 14, with three school friends.  If the birthplaces of their children are accurate, Banfield and Elizabeth moved around frequently within Bristol County.
