Esther Chatfield [daughter of 3916 (=3914) George Chatfield & Hester Hull]
Almost all of our information on this family is from secondary website sources; I am presenting what we have found, but cannot say anything about the accuracy of the information. There are some known conflicts, so it is unlikely that everything here is correct.

NOTABLES: 1956.2.9.4. George Pier served in the War of 1812 1956.3.4. Josiah Wilcox served in the Revolutionary War 1956.3.6. Elijah Wilcox served in the Revolutionary War 1956.3.7. Jason Wilcox served in the Revolutionary War (died) |
1956. Daniel Stevens was born 18 Oct 1701 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 2 Jul 1784 in Killingworth. He married 14 Jan 1724/25 in Killingworth,
1957. Esther Chatfield. Esther (also seen as Alister Chatfield) was born 23 Oct 1703 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 4 Mar 1777 in Killingworth.
They were Congregational; Daniel was a Deacon.
Daniel and Esther had nine children:
1956.1. Charles Stevens was born 13 Mar 1725/26 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died 14 Sep 1751 in Killingworth. Charles was married, but his wife is a problem. Some say he married 24 May 1750 Sarah Stevens, daughter of Josiah Stevens and Deborah. Others say he married Phebe Kelsey, who is the wife of his brother Josiah. Website presentations seem evenly divided into two conflicting groups. There is a published record showing a Charles Stevens and Sarah Stevens married in the 2nd Church of Killingworth by Rev William Seward. A marriage to Phebe Kelsey runs into conflict, assuming all the given dates are correct, as she marries Josiah in June but Charles was still alive until September. These two bits of information, while not solid proof, suggest that Charles married Sarah and not Phebe. But there are still some problems with Sarah, as she is listed with a death date 18 Feb 1749/50, several months before the marriage date. Some sites give this death date, and still show her marriage to Charles and even a child. It may be that 18 Feb is not her death date, but the publishing of their marriage intention. Or there may be a simple confusion of two Sarah Stevens -- even within our own family we have several Sarah Stevens, by birth or marriage, living in Killingworth at this time.
Charles and Sarah are said to have one child (first cousin to us):
1956.1.1. Sarah Stevens was born Dec 1750 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.

Josiah married first, 20 Jun 1751 probably in Killingworth, his cousin Phebe Kelsey [3932.3.3], daughter of Isaac Kelsey (1699-1751) and Jane Crane (b. 1701). Phebe was born 4 Jul 1730 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1755 in Killingworth. They were Congregational, and were married in the 2nd Church of Killingworth by Rev William Seward. Phebe and Josiah are second cousins through two lines, both being descended from 15670 William Kelsey, and also from 15632 John Meigs and Thomasine Fry. Some have Phebe married to Josiah's brother Charles.
Josiah married second, 29 Apr 1756 probably in Killingworth, Amy Wetmore, daughter of Jabez Wetmore and Abigail. Amy was born 21 Sep 1734 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in 1800.
Josiah and first wife Phebe had one child that we know of, there may be others (both first and second cousin to us):
1956.2.1. Phebe Stevens was born in 1752 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut, and died in childhood, sometime before 1756.
Josiah and second wife Amy had eleven children (first cousins to us):

There is some disagreement among website sources, some saying the last few children do not belong here.

Solomon was born 30 Sep 1758 in Great Barrington (Berkshire) Massachusetts, and died 25 Jul 1828 in Erwin (Steuben) New York. He served in the Revolutionary War under Ethan Allen. 1956.2.4.5. Elizabeth Ann Pier was born about 1795 in Otsego Co, New York. Some have her born in 1808, which is after the death of her mother.
Some sources place Henry Pier and Mabel Pier as children of Mabel, but these are children of Solomon's second marriage.
1956.2.5. Daniel Stevens was born in 1762 in Killingworth (Middlesex) Connecticut.

She married in 1784 in Egremont (Berkshire) Massachusetts, Abner Pier, son of Thomas Pier (1730 MA - ~1816 NY) and Rachel Tremaine (1726 - ~1816 NY). Two of Abner's brothers marry two of Lucy's sisters. Abner was born 19 Nov 1762 in Egremont (Berkshire) Massachusetts, and died 24 Dec 1810 in Otsego Co, New York. Abner served in the Revolutionary War, and was in a battle in which he was captured by the Iroquois under Joseph Brant. About 700 Loyalist militia and German mercenaries along with 300 Iroquois (Mohawks, Senecas and Cayugas) under Chief Joseph Brant, all commanded by the British Colonel John Johnson, raided the Mohawk Valley in the fall of 1780. An American force of a thousand was coming to meet them but would not arrive in time, so a small force of 200 men was ordered to try to slow them down before they reached the town of Stone Arabia. The Battle of Stone Arabia in the Mohawk Valley, 19 Oct 1780, was a defeat for the Americans. They were quickly overrun, with over 100 killed or captured, and many of the prisoners were then massacred, including Abner. Abner was scalped, then shot several times and left for dead, but recovered. [A Cooperstown newspaper article from the 1800's places Abner's scalping at the Cherry Valley Massacre in 1781 -- but the Cherry Valley battle happened in 1778, see 15726.10.7.6 Ichabod Alden.] Abner was awarded a pension of $3 a month after the war. After his death Lucy applied for a widow's pension, but the claim was denied because a fire had destroyed the Government records, and she could not prove he had served two years. Lucy could not write, and signed papers with an 'X'.
Abner died in a typhoid epidemic, along with several of their children.
Lucy and Abner had nine children (second cousins to us):

Sarah and Silas are third cousins once removed, both being descended from 15668 Josiah Hull and Elizabeth Loomis.

Both Jemima and her first husband might be related to us, but I have not found any more information on them.
