Bill’s Family: Ancestors of Eldora Beahm

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

Edward Vining and Catherine Haines

NOTABLES:

120.4. William Harrison Vining served in the Civil War
120.4.7. Edward Harrison Vining served in the Spanish-American War

120. Edward Vining {a,b,c,d,e} was born 17 May 1809 in Maine, and died 19 Oct 1891 in Marcellon (Columbia) Wisconsin. He is a son of Benjamin Vining [240] and Sarah Ring [241]. Edward married 6 Dec 1832 in Franklin Co, Maine,
121. Catherine Haines {a,c,d,e}. Catherine was born 1814 in Avon (Franklin) Maine, and died sometime before 1891 in Wisconsin.

Haines is most likely Anglo-Saxon, meaning woods or grove. It might possibly be a Welsh line, deriving from the personal name Einws. Catherine is the earliest known ancestor in this line; there are some sources suggesting that her father is Frederick Haines of Maine, but we have not found anything definite at this time. Mary Haines, who married Edward’s brother John, is likely her sister or cousin.

Edward was the eighth of fourteen children. He was a contemporary and fourth cousin to Marcus Whitman, who started the Oregon Trail. What we know of Catherine comes from information she gave on the Wisconsin census. She says she was born in Maine, and that her parents were born in Maine. Avon is a township, in the area of Philips.

Edward and Catherine were farmers, and were Methodist Episcopalian. They were married by Rev. Nehemiah Hunt in Avon Township, and lived in Franklin County, Maine after their marriage. Sometime between 1846 and 1849, they moved to Wisconsin with their 6 children. This was a time when many people were moving west; Wisconsin became a state in 1848.
They stopped first in Milwaukee, a city of about 20,000 at that time. Thomas was born there in 1849. Edward bought some farmland in Marcellon Township, Columbia County, on 9 July 1852. They are listed as farmers in Columbia County in the 1870 and 1880 Wisconsin census.
Edward’s death certificate gives the cause of death as “parylisis”.

120.4. William Harrison Vining {a,d,f,g,h} was born 21 May 1840 in Avon (Franklin) Maine, and died 5 Dec 1891 in Elmore (Faribault) Minnesota. He married on 3 Jul 1862 at Ft Scott (Bourbon) Kansas, Ruth Ann Smart, the daughter of Josiah Hezekiah Smart (b. about 1802) and Eliza Ann Estep (b. about 1823). Ruth Ann was born 15 Nov 1847 in Davis Co, Iowa, and died 16 Jan 1920 in St. Paul (Ramsey) Minnesota. They are both buried in Blue Earth, Minnesota.

William moved to Wisconsin as a child in the late 1840’s. He served in the Civil War, enlisting in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry in November 1861 along with his brother Edward Kent. While they were stationed at Fort Scott, Kansas, William met Ruth Ann Smart, and they were married a short time after. Ruth Ann appears in the 1850 Census, living with her parents in Marion Township, Davis County, Iowa. In the 1860 Census, the family had moved from Iowa to Arkansas, living in Flint Township, Benton County, Arkansas. They moved to Fort Scott, Kansas before Jul 1862, and in an 1865 census are listed (without Ruth) in City of Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas. Their family lived near the James family, and family legend claims Ruth Ann was taught to shoot a pistol by Jesse James. We have no way of knowing if this is true, but it is at least possible. Ruth may have lived with her family through part of the war, as William was moved to various posts in Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma, but she is not with them in 1865. Ruth’s sister Mary Jane married Augustus Smith, another member of the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry.

After the war they settled first in Columbia County Wisconsin, where their first three children were born. They moved around 1873 to Elmore (Faribault) Minnesota, where William got a land grant. As with Edward Kent, there are suggestions in some sources that this was connected with Civil War service, but I was told at the National Archives that there were no Civil War land grants -- this was probably an ordinary homesteading grant. William’s sister Eliza had been living in Elmore for about 13 years when William arrived, and their brother Edward joined them sometime between 1891 and 1895 (possibly after William had died). Sometime after William died, Ruth Ann moved to St. Paul, where she spent her remaining years. She probably lived with her daughter Maude.
