Bill’s Family: Ancestors of Eldora Beahm

These pages are a compilation of my work and that of others. You are welcome to use anything on this page, but be aware that although I have been as careful and accurate as possible, I am not a professional genealogist. I have been working on our genealogy for over 25 years, and started the website in 2005. Some of the lines I have researched myself; some, especially on Rita’s side, we inherited the research of other family members over the past 75 years. Still, the majority of these pages are limited to compilations from published books and what I could find on the internet. The target audience was and remains our family, so the family pages are limited to our own ancestors. I have set it up so that each page is one set of ancestors, with their descendants. For the most part I have limited my scope to their great-grandchildren (second cousins to us); in some cases I list sources which may continue further.   HOME

John Beahm and Barbary ___

56. John Beahm {f} was born probably around 1820 in the province of Wurttemburg (Germany), and died probably in Ohio or Wisconsin. He married about 1843 in Wurttemburg,

57. Barbary ___ {f}. She was born about 1825 in Wurttemburg, and died probably in Ohio or Wisconsin.

Beahm is German, and refers to a peasant farmer. Germany was not united as a country at this time; Wurttembug was an independent province in south Germany; the main city is Stuttgart. John was most likely named Johann. Barbary is a rather odd name (we have it handwritten on a marriage certificate) but I have found other people with this name, and it actually is a name used in Germany, and in Dutch and German communities in America at that time. We don’t know the specific reason why they came to America. Many left Germany at this time for religious reasons -- but we don’t know what religion they were (several children married as Presbyterian in America, but that was not a major religion in Germany, John and Barbary were probably some other Protestant type.) Many others left to avoid the wars and drafts happening as Prussia tried to unite Germany. And others of course simply came for more opportunities in this country.

John and Barbary were farmers, probably dairy. They brought two children with them to Ohio, probably about 1848. Their third son was born in Ohio. They settled in Medina County in northern Ohio (they were living within 25 miles of the Kilburn and Cookingham families at this time). All three sons moved to Wisconsin by the late 1860’s, but we don’t know if John and Barbary also moved. There are no records of them in either Ohio or Wisconsin, which is rather puzzling. It is possible their children changed the family name -- something like Boehm would be more common in Germany.

John and Barbary had three children:

56.1. David Beahm (1845 Ger - ~1900 WI) had descendants and is expanded below.

56.2. Christian Beahm {a,c,f,h} was born Sep 1846 in the province of Wurttemburg (Germany), and died in Wisconsin. He married 7 Oct 1871 in Scott (Columbia) Wisconsin, Harriet N. Aldrich [116.2.3], daughter of Lorenzo Aldrich (1827 NY-1898 WI) and Nancy Spees (~1830 NY- d. WI). Harriet was born 28 Nov 1853 in Columbia Co, Wisconsin, and died 26 May 1915 in Columbia County. She is a cousin to Cabert’s wife Jane. Christian and Harriet were farmers. Christian came to America with his parents and brother about 1848 at age 2, settling in Medina County, Ohio. He moved to Wisconsin by the late 1860’s. Christian and Harriet lived in Columbia County and Green Lake County in Wisconsin.
Christian and Harriet had two children (both first and second cousins to us):

56.2.1. Emma Beahm {c,h} was born Nov 1881 in Wisconsin. She married 21 Feb 1901 in Wisconsin, spouse unknown.

56.2.2. George Beahm {c,h} was born Aug 1883 in Wisconsin. He married 17 Jun 1902 in Wisconsin, spouse unknown.

Christian and Harriet also adopted 116.2.6.5 Herbert L. Wood, the son of Harriet’s sister Ida.

56.3. Cabert Beahm [28] (1850 OH - ~1910 WI) and Jane Almina Aldrich are direct ancestors, separate page.
