26
Elijah Spencer, 23rd Missouri Infantry
January to July 1865
I don’t have any confirmed information yet on Elijah Spencer for this time period. I am including this section to keep things in their proper order. This section will be expanded when I find some definite information.
The family records don’t say anything specific about what Elijah did following the March to the Sea. Sherman left part of his army in Savannah, and took part of it on a new campaign through South and North Carolina. This lasted from January 19 to April 26, 1865. I have nothing at this time to indicate whether Elijah stayed in Savannah or went on the Carolinas march.
General Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9. Sherman’s campaign ended on April 26 with the surrender of General Johnston in North Carolina.
I assume that Elijah probably stayed in garrison wherever he was, Savannah or North Carolina, for the next few months. According to the family history, he was discharged on July 18, 1865, and returned home to Missouri.
